What Makes an MJM Different?

It all starts with the vision and the design. To improve sailboat performance with the wind as a finite source of energy, founder Bob Johnstone knew that stronger, stiffer, and lighter high-tech construction with a low vertical center of gravity (VCG) worked wonders.

Typically, powerboat builders didn’t care; they just built boats heavy and cheap, then kept adding more horsepower. This left the door wide open for the Johnstone family to create MJM Yachts as the first seriously built performance motoryacht with strong/light high-tech epoxy composite construction.

The net result was a faster, lighter motoryacht that delivered impressive fuel-efficiency. “Twice the Fun, Half the Fuel” became MJM’s initial mantra. As the technical editor of Soundings commented, “MJMs are built like the Boeing Dreamliner. They could last 100 years!”

What is Advance-Precision Vacuum Infusion?

First is the proprietary epoxy-based resin formulation. This provides better bond to the core surfaces that are mechanical as well as adhesive. Destructive testing has shown this to create 25% better mechanical properties versus a vacuum bagged wet layup.

Second is the use of proprietary unbalanced woven quad-axial E-glass, enabling the dialing in of exact engineering with the result of greater strength and a reduction in weight. An example is the deck, which is 35% less weight, helping to lower the VCG. The lower the VCG, the more stable, better performing the yacht. The special formulation epoxy resin and E-glass are brought together through the vacuum infusion process. This provides several important points of precision, the first being that the process eliminates the possibility of air voids, no matter how small.

Next is the ability to exactly control the E-glass to resin ratio, achieving the optimum 60:40. The last point being that the application of a vacuum compacts and bonds these elements into high-strength unitized parts.

What Factor does Advanced Engineering Play?

Building an ultra-performance yacht like an MJM takes a great deal of planning and engineering to predict stresses and loads placed upon all structures. In this area, computations for weight, vertical center of gravity, and hull geometry all interact to determine the materials to be used to deal with the forces needing to be dealt with. The combination of design, engineering, materials, and processes determine the outcome, and is why an MJM is so stable, fast, and fuel-efficient.

A key part of the design is MJM’s improved deep-V hull shape, which influences speed, stability, and handling. Other factors include buoyancy and bow shape, which on an MJM serves to eliminate a delayed response to the wheel, bow steer, or burying the bow in large following seas, not to mention helping to keep guests dry. A low center of gravity and narrow beam with chine flats redirect waves and wake energy outward and downward to dampen roll in a seaway. The deep-V entry hull shape slices through waves instead of slamming, pounding, or having each small wave create a mini collision and jolting the crew. This eliminates the fatigue experienced when driving other yachts.

Superior Materials

In real estate, it’s all about location, location, location; in performance yachts, you can say it’s all about materials, materials, materials. Each MJM yacht is constructed from superior materials selected specifically for weight, strength, stress loads, and function. Minimizing weight is essential in a performance yacht, but you can’t do that without increasing strength and stiffness.

For this reason, Master Builder Mark Lindsay—and his Boston BoatWorks (BBW)—was enlisted as MJM’s licensed building partner. Mark had over 30 years of high-tech boat building experience using advanced composite materials building America’s Cup, World Championship, and Olympic racing sailboats. Since Mark’s untimely passing, Phillip Steggall has taken the MJM composite lead to new levels of process, materials, strength, and weight savings. Phillip is a leading composites innovator with origins in the first high tech racing sailboats in the 1980s.

Epoxy, though far more expensive than traditional polyester and vinylester resins, is a much better adhesive that is 25% stronger and has greater flexural strength for longer life. Another advantage is the more tightly linked molecular structure that makes it almost impervious to osmotic blistering. In fact, the prescribed cure for boats suffering from bottom-blistering is the application of a new outer layer with epoxy resin.

The combination of the Corecell and E-glass in the outer skin creates a structure like a continuous I-beam that is stiff, strong, and light. The engineering dictates what density of coring should be placed in various areas of the hull and deck. Each panel is pre-cut and numbered for installation. Other builders use either the traditionally cheap method of laying sheets of cloth in the mold, spraying copious amounts of resin on it, then hand-rolling; or laying dry glass sheets in the hull, bagging it, then infusing a diluted resin by vacuum. However, the process on MJMs results in a stronger 60:40 glass-to-resin ratio, rather than the reverse. Resin is glue and should be minimized.

Advanced Composite Construction

These materials are then utilized in a revolutionary process in the hull and deck molds. The inside of the mold is coated with a premium epoxy-compatible gelcoat. Then the outer skin is an E-Glass cloth. Next comes the waterproof Corecell structural foam, and finally the inner skin of E-Glass. Once the laminate is built ‘dry’, a vacuum bag is applied to the laminate stack, which compresses the laminate with a force of approximately 2,000 pounds per square foot. This process ensures there are no air voids and ensures a unitized, lightweight, and strong structure. All air is vacuumed out beneath the bag so that the weight of atmosphere is compressing the layers of composites. The vacuum also pulls out all moisture.

Once the vacuum is complete, resin is vacuumed through the part. Vacuum ensures a minimal amount of resin, and thus weight. When you examine MJM’s laminates under a microscope, the resin wraps around each bead detail on the foam surface, providing a mechanical bond, in addition to the superior adhesive bond of epoxy. The MJM infusion process leads to 25% better mechanical properties of a laminate versus other wet layup processes.

There is no wood in the structure of an MJM. The hull grid with foam-cored stringers and bulkhead landings are then installed and encapsulated in a fiberglass laminate. MJM applies the infusion process to all of its moldings, not just the hull or deck.

The last step in the lamination process is to post-cure the molded parts for 24 hours. This process allows epoxy to cure at a better molecular level than polyester and vinylester resins, which on other boats continue to cure over the first year with the potential for serious print-through.

Each hull and deck are post-cured for 16 hours at 140°F. Epoxy-built MJMs are stronger, lighter, and longer-lasting. With hull and deck structures comprising up to 25% of a boat’s total weight, you can understand why MJMs are in most cases many thousands of pounds lighter than similar-sized boats. But it doesn’t end there. Greater hull and deck weight requires more horsepower to reach acceptable cruising speeds. This means larger, heavier engines to get the boat going. Larger engines burn more fuel. That means bigger fuel tanks for reasonable range. It’s a vicious cycle. MJM has taken an industry leadership role to end that cycle and become “The World Leader in Fuel-Efficient Powerboats.”

Owner benefits are huge: better response at the wheel and more fun to drive; more speed per horsepower applied and a chance to take advantage of weather windows; and a lower center of gravity for more comfortable motion at sea.

Soundings Technical Editor Eric Sorensen commented, “When it comes to the lifespan of today’s best-built boats…What’s to fail on an MJM? It’s an oven, post-cured epoxy boat. It’s as well-built as a Dreamliner, as far as I can see. There’s no reason that a boat like that couldn’t be here in 100 years.” Maybe 200 years, he later added.

MJM’s 43z Adds Outboards to Traditional Design

  • By Michael Verdon
  • Updated: May 7, 2018

MJM 43z

When Bob Johnstone, his wife, Mary, and son Peter launched MJM Yachts in 2002, the founders of the J/Boat sailing-yacht dynasty felt like they had entered the bizarro world. “I thought I’d be the last guy to own a powerboat company,” Johnstone says. “We decided to get into it because we’d owned a 29-foot Downeast-style boat, and it wasn’t designed for cruising. We used it a lot between racing on weekends but found that the head was small, the pilothouse was uncomfortable, and there wasn’t seating in the cockpit for guests.” Much as they had done with J/Boats, the Johnstones came up with a formula, this time for a new-style Downeaster. They compiled a list of their favorite boats and cherry-picked features. “The bow had to have a Carolina flare that could cross big seas without getting wet, have the sheer line of a PT boat, layout of a Maine lobster boat and sightlines of a ’50s Matthews cruiser,” Johnstone says. “Oh, and it had to be light, tough and luxurious.”

MJM 43z

The Johnstones tapped naval architect Doug Zurn of Marblehead, Massachusetts, best-known for having created the Shelter Island 38 for singer Billy Joel. He designed 30 renditions of the first MJM yacht before finalizing it. As the builder, the Johnstones enlisted Boston BoatWorks, known for ultra-lightweight, oceangoing Grand Prix racing sailboats.

“The bow had to have a Carolina flare that could cross big seas without getting wet, have the sheer line of a PT boat, layout of a Maine lobster boat and sightlines of a ’50s Matthews cruiser.” — Bob Johnstone, founder, MJM Yachts

Fast forward 15 years to the MJM 43z — built on the same hull as the company’s 40z inboard, but with triple 350 hp Mercury Verado outboards. Two clients brought the idea to the Johnstones at the same time. One had owned three J/Boats in the 1980s and was on his second MJM, the inboard-powered 40z; he wanted outboards to avoid running aground in the shallows of southwest Florida.

I ran that owner’s 43z, Annabelle III, from his home port. The yacht has an elegant, long forefoot, tall pilothouse and soft tumblehome, with the white Verados on the stern. He chose a custom gray exterior with an orange stripe (he modeled it after the Porsche 911 GT3 RS) that makes for a stylish contrast to the white topsides. Simply tacking the outboards to the stern could have ruined the classic MJM profile, but Zurn sculpted the transom so the new engines were integral to the design. The yacht also has two side doors and transom doors for access from the dock, and standard features that include helm electronics, Lectrotab electric trim tabs, a Fusion entertainment system, a VacuFlush head, an Indel Webasto freezer and a memory-foam mattress.

We only hit 1- to 2-foot seas during our test, but the yacht handled them without slamming. The 43z’s 45-degree deadrise at the bow transitions to 18.5 degrees at the transom, in a design that should give it a softer ride in big seas. Annabelle III can hit a 44-knot top-end in flat water, her owner says, though the top speed on our sea trial was 42.8 knots. The 43z turns crisply, like a much smaller boat, holding tight through the turns. It’s a fun yacht to drive. And though there’s a 3-foot draft, when stern-to on a beach with the outboards up, the vessel can sit in 2 feet of water.

Annabelle III’s owner likes the joystick piloting and Skyhook station-keeping system, and the 1-knot speed gain of the Verados versus his 40z’s inboard power plants (which he says produced more vibration). The cavern in the 43z’s cockpit deck where the inboards were on his 40z holds an inflatable RIB, its outboard, a life raft and his golf clubs. He chose options including sliding-glass side panels, a power-opening windshield, a Seakeeper 5 stabilizer, a 6 kW Westerbeke genset, 32,000 Btu air conditioning and KVH satellite television.

MJM 43z

The pilothouse has two seats at the helm, with more guest seating forward of an L-shaped portside lounge, and a fold-down teak table and lounge to starboard. The helm station has Simrad electronics (4G radar, Evo3 chart plotter, autopilot) on 16- and 9-inch displays, with a smaller console for the Verados. A 24-inch Edson stainless-steel wheel with varnished teak trim is a reminder that this MJM is a New England-built yacht. Annabelle III’s owner also went with Esthec synthetic teak decking, for Downeast class without traditional teak’s maintenance.

The cockpit has movable chairs with Ultraleather cushions, and an optional overhead Bimini top for shade. The sliding windows and opening windshield let in plenty of air, while a Strataglass screen drops in back whenever it’s time to batten down the hatches.

The interior has a Herreshoff-style look with white surfaces for bulkheads and countertops, teak-and-holly soles, and cherry hardwood for the joinery and overheads. Salon headroom is 6 feet 6 inches. The yacht has a single stateroom for a couple, while the salon table and lounges convert to a double berth for guests. Multiple hatches and windows create airflow throughout the interior.

Johnstone says that while some people may think of the 43z as a competitor to other Downeast models, he sees the yacht competing for attention against the new breed of large, outboard-powered center consoles.

“Someone who is used to running 45 knots won’t be very happy in a Downeast boat,” he says. “But most big outboard boats have trouble escaping their fishing heritage when it comes to cruising comfort. We’re giving them the opportunity to put the family into a yachtlike atmosphere.”

MJM 43z

Built Like a Racer

For two decades, Boston BoatWorks cut its teeth building multimillion-dollar Grand Prix racing sailboats, where every ounce counted. Now, the builder on Charleston Harbor in downtown Boston builds only the MJM line, using the same wet epoxy, pre-preg materials with vacuum-molding and post-cure oven processes. Epoxy resin is 25 percent stronger than the polyester resin used in most boatbuilding, with higher elongation properties for durability. Epoxy also has superior resistance to water degradation. BBW uses Kevlar in the outer skin to make the boat stronger and lighter. “MJM boats require less horsepower than many of their competitors,” says Scott Smith, BBW’s managing director. “In some cases, we’re half the weight of same-sized boats trying to gain speeds over 20 knots.” MJMs are also built for longevity. “The differences in the way we build the boat won’t be apparent for 10 years,” Smith says. “We’re coming up to our 250th MJM and are seeing 34zs we built 14 years ago in excellent condition. By using the best materials and methods, these boats will stay low maintenance and easy to use. It’s a boat that you can pass along.”

CO Tests the New MJM 42 Express Cruiser

' src=

By George Day

Part One: Running fast and efficiently on the Pamilco River

In early June, I travelled from Newport, Rhode Island, to Washington, North Carolina, to visit with our friends at MJM Yachts and to test drive the new MJM 42.  Washington is an old southern town and port that sits on the edge of the Pamilico River. And, it is a boat building mecca.

It has lovely late 18 th Century architecture –rebuilt after Northern troops burned the town during the Civil War—and a picturesque waterfront with several marinas and a waterfront park.

It was in a marina at the north end of town that I found Melissa Davidson, director of sales and marketing at MJM, and the rest of the MJM crew aboard the brand new 42. With its distinctive dark blue hull, slight reverse sheer line and a large cabin with huge windows, the 42 was definitely a sibling in the MJM family.

We stepped aboard and one of the crew switched on the genset to bring the boat alive. Standing on the hatch to the mechanical locker below I could barely hear the genset and had only a faint vibration underfoot.

Our skipper of the day was Reggie Fountain, Jr. who is a member of the Fountain family of boat builders that for decades built high-speed powerboats and race boats just across the river. Cruising Odyssey’s editor, Peter Jasnssen, while editing a different boating magazine, once drove a Fountain powerboat at 160 mph on this stretch of the Pamilco.

We weren’t going to go that fast today, but we were going to put the new 42 through its paces and we would be going as fast as any cruiser would ever need or want to go.

MJM builds four models. The MJM3 and MJM4 are day cruisers with large cockpits and an open seating areas in the bows and both have accommodations for overnighting. The MJM 35 and the new 42 are express cruisers created for owners and families who want to day cruise in comfort but also want to spend days or even a week or more living aboard and cruising the coasts.

where are mjm yachts built

Reggie fired up the twin Volvo D440s with DPI drives and we all had the same sensation created by the genset, the sound of the engines was seriously dampened by sound insulation. Reggie motored us through town and down a narrow channel to the middle of the Pamilco. Then, he pushed the throttles forward and the 42 began to show us what it can do.

The 42, like its siblings, has 18.5 degrees of deadrise –-V shape to the hull—that carries all the way aft. So, as the 42 accelerated, the bow did not rise as it gained speed but instead the hull remained flat on the water which meant it wasn’t digging a big hole in the water aft and thus wasn’t creating drag that would slow us down.

Also, MJM uses advanced boat building materials and techniques in all of their boats with the aim of making them as light as possible while also making them incredibly stiff and durable. It’s the weight factor that helps the boats achieve their noteworthy turns of speed.

With the throttles wide open, the Volvos ticked over at 3800 rpms and gave us a maximum boat speed of 46 knots. Riding on the hull’s deep V, the motion was as smooth as can be and it felt like we were running on rails. There was a small wind driven chop on the river that rat-a-tatted under us without the least sensation of pounding.

Reggie put the 42 through a series of high-speed figure eights turns and, again, the boat was as sure footed as if on rails. As we crossed our own wakes, much larger than the wind-driven chop, the 42 sliced through them like a hot knife through butter. This was reassuring when thinking of those inevitable days when you have to get home and the wind has kicked up from exactly the wrong direction.

where are mjm yachts built

After the figure eights, Reggie handed me the helm so I could get a feel for how the 42 actually drives at various speed and in various turns. I’ve driven lots of motorboats so I could tell within the first few seconds that the hull design, propulsion set up and steering with the DPI drives was a sophisticated combination.

The feel of the wheel was light but the response to each turn was immediate and positive. You know you have complete control even at full speed.  You also feel that you could drive the 42 a high speed comfortably for hours if you wanted to make miles.

I had my fun and then we turned back toward Washington and started to work on just how efficient the 42 really is. At 3800 rpms, with the twin diesels, the Garmin instruments indicated that we were burning a gallon per mile. That’s going 46 knots.

Backing off to 3350 rpms, the boat slowed to 39 knots and the instrumentation indicated that we were now getting 1.3 miles to the gallon. If you have run and refueled big powerboats, you’ll appreciate that number.

Even better, you will like what you see when you throttle back to 3000 rpms. We were now cruising at 30 knots, which will be a comfortable speed for everyone on board and fast enough to make fine progress on a coastal run. And, the 42 was now getting 1.5 miles to the gallon.

Instead of the twin Volvos, the 42 can be equipped with twin 600-horsepower Mercury Verado outboards. Reportedly, these will add about five knots to the top speed. We did not test the outboard version so will hold evaluations for another day.

MJM likes to talk about the many great features in their yachts, and there are many, but to me, a secure, comfortable ride and excellent fuel efficiency at quite high speeds are game changers and huge differentiators.

Life Aboard

The 42 has spacious living spaces for entertaining friends and for a couple that wants to head off cruising for a few days. The cockpit’s bench settees will seat four or five comfortably around a small folding table.

The swim platform aft in the inboard version offers a large space for lounging and playing with water toys. In the outboard version, this becomes the engine mount and the inboard engine compartment becomes a huge storage area.

The salon has an efficient galley on the starboard side with two fridge drawers, a microwave, a convection stove top and galley sinks.  The dinette will fit four and the co-pilot chair’s back folds forward to add another seat.

In the forward cabin, there is a centerline double berth with large drawers under it and two hanging lockers. The lounge area just aft has an L-shaped sofa with a small table. In a pinch, this could be a guest berth. The lounge and forward cabin are separated by a door for privacy.

Under the salon and behind the companionway steps, a second double berth is in what could be called the cave. This will be great for children or grandchildren.

The head is huge and has a separate shower that has a door to keep shower water contained.

A couple on their own will find the 42 a perfect size for summer getaways. And, it will be a fine platform for day cruising and entertaining friends and family.

During my visit to Washington, I had a chance to tour of the MJM factory and see how these remarkable boats are built. I’ll take you on that tour in Part Two next week.

Manufacturers Description

The primary design goal for the 40z was to create a 40 foot powerboat that would handle like a30-footer at idle speeds in tricky docking situations. The Volvo-Penta IPS or joystick controltechnology makes this goal a reality. The IPS system works with twin pod drives under the hull. When conventional twin-engine controls are in neutral, a single joystick takes over with fingertipcontrol. There are no thrusters. Through a unique computer program, each drive unit isindependently operated in terms of direction, rpm and forward-reverse gear. This system worksfar more intuitively than conventional twin shaft drives or joystick/thruster operated jet drives.

Unique Features-Side-opening cockpit (P&S) overcome a common problem, getting aboard or getting off when  handling docklines.- Single-level seating for as many as 15 at cocktail time or for a family picnic- Sliding glass side windows and fully-opening powered windshields to regulate airflow in the   pilothouse to suit conditions.- Large (60x78) island berth and separate shower in owner stateroom.- A convertible guest cabin, with dinette optional lowering table.- 40z can be trucked overland without penalty. Width doesn’t exceed 12 feet and height on a  trailer is less than 13.5 feet.

MJM Yachts Vermilion

A $2 million cruiser

VERMILION, Ohio -- This is what a $2 million boat looks like.

Built by Boston Boat Works, this MJM motor yacht is billed as "the most technologically advanced production 50-footer, ever." Its hull is built for the choppy waters of the Great Lakes and can withstand big waves. It also has plenty of luxury touches.

Here are the specifics.

Boat Name: MJM 50z

Dealer: MJM Yachts Vermilion

Model year:   2019

Cost: Starts at $1.995 million

How big:   55 feet, with a 15-foot beam, 32,850 pounds

How many people fit in it: 15 people can sit comfortably on the deck

The layout: The layout is ideal for entertaining and extensive cruising, with two staterooms and heads, with glass-enclosed shower. The cabin's L-shaped lounge serves as a pair of foot-to-foot single berths as is, or converts to a double berth by lowering the table.

The construction:  Built by Boston BoatWorks, the 50z has high-tech construction, fuel efficiency and high-end components that make it light, fast and durable. It's the first yacht to feature the Seakeeper Gyro Stabilizer, which eliminates most boat roll.

The safety: The CE Certification Cat A Ocean means that the design and construction of the hull is built to withstand 7-meter waves and 55 mph winds. "It's the peace of mind knowing that if you get stuck, you have a boat that's going to get you back to the dock," MJM Yachts Vermilion owner Mike Moes said.

The engine: Three pod drives total more than 1,300 horsepower and can push the boat to 40 knots.

The gas tank: The boat has a 520-gallon diesel tank that burns 50 gallons per hour at 35 knots.

Accolades: Named "Best Down East Cruiser 50 Feet Plus" by the editors of Power & Motor Yacht, Passagemaker, Soundings, Soundings Trade Only, Yachts International and SAIL.

His love of racing was cultivated through sailing Blue Jays and Lasers in Pequot Yacht Club’s junior program.  Since then he has actively raced in the J105 fleet, J109 fleet, and helped form the J122 class. He also developed and helped launch the LIS IRC 35 class.  Todd is an experienced distance sailor and was involved with winning the Vineyard race class and IRC overall aboard the J122 Partnership.

Todd enjoys using his extensive knowledge of boating to find his clients the boat that best suits their needs.  He is dedicated to providing the best possible service to all his customers.  Todd can often be found racing with clients and helping them build their racing programs. Through the years, he has custom built many J/Boats, Alerions, and MJM power boats for clients, many of whom he now considers personal friends.

During the winter season you may spot the Williams family on the slopes at Okemo where they have a ski house.

Andy Kaplan Starting October 4, Andrew (Andy) Kaplan has joined the brokerage team at McMichael Yacht Yards & Brokers. The addition increases the McMichael roster to seven full-time yacht brokers serving customers up and down the east coast with a concentration on the Long Island Sound and Narragansett Bay. He will work primarily out of the McMichael Mamaroneck, NY, office as well as Martha’s Vineyard.

“Andy is bringing to McMichael a lifetime of experience in sail and power boating with a keen focus in the sailboat racing world,” said McMichael President Steve Leicht. “His broad familiarity with offshore and one-design sailboats combined with his powerboating experience makes him an ideal addition to our brokerage team.”

Kaplan spent the majority of his career in finance including helping create the Quattro Global Capital, LLC where he was a principal and head of operation and marketing. “I believe that my financial sales and management experience is a great asset as I transition to yacht brokerage,” noted Kaplan. “While they are different industries, to succeed in either you need similar disciplines when matching buyers with the right product. That’s what creates and maintains long term customer relationships.”

Kaplan grew-up in Mamaroneck and has been a member of the Larchmont Yacht Club for over 30 years where he has been active in the Club’s leadership. He lives in New Rochelle, NY, and on Martha’s Vineyard, MA.

An agile performer for a stable ride.

The 40z is an agile performer that parts the waves cleanly and deflects the wave action down and away for a soft, dry and stable ride. Fast, fuel efficient and ISO Category A Ocean certification distinguish the 40z as the undisputed best-in-class. Based on light but exceptionally strong epoxy construction and narrow, effective hull design, the 40z can best the competition by as much as 50% improvement in nautical miles per gallon at higher cruising speeds.
