Vacuum resin infusion is the process at the heart of our technology and is used for all parts.
The vacuum resin process removes all of the air between the fibres of a part prior to the introduction of the resin.
After the process, our parts are meticulously sanded with variable grit — allowing for maximum paint adhesion on surfaces and smooth, stylish edges.
Core materials are introduced into the part to increase stiffness without increasing weight.
The core is a structural-grade foam with a high shear strength characteristic: if the part is of a complex shape, we cut the foam into sections, thermoforming it to the required shape.
We use five different sizes and densities of foam on the boat, optimized for local strength requirements.
We purchase carbon fiber by the roll and over 35 rolls are used in each boat. We have engineered the laminate schedule to be most efficient in the various areas of the boat maximising strength and reducing weight.
Each meant to be the most efficient for their respective areas. The fabrics are stitched, instead of weaved.
Stitched fabrics do not need to bend over or under other fibre and lay flat, making a stronger part.
At Open Waters, it is our mission to make catamaran cruising more exciting and environmentally sustainable. We’ve set out to create a performance cruising catamaran that will be a joy to sail and that will raise the bar in environmental sustainability.
We have developed a unique design and manufacturing process, selected high performance materials that enable us to build a boat that uses less materials and is 50% lighter. As a result it is a lot faster and as a result it is able to generate and store the energy needed to propel it electrically for hours and provide enough energy for on board equipment.
We use high performance carbon fibre and a vacuum infusion process to maximize strength and reduce the use of resin and eliminate resin vapour emissions. We use 100% recycled PET foam core wherever possible and we see the opportunity for incremental use of bio-based epoxy and natural fibres in our future.
As we continue to develop our sustainability roadmap for our boats we will perform a full lifecycle analysis to identify other opportunities to minimize our carbon footprint.
The unique processes and skills we have developed can be applied and licensed to other marine and recreational vehicles businesses.
Simon Angus P.Eng is a professional mechanical engineer with a background in project management and a passion for sailing.
He spent his university summers travelling around Europe searching for the best combination of wind and waves in addition to teaching both sailing and windsurfing.
After moving to Canada in 2004, Simon bought a Catalina 27 in Kitimat, BC, and enjoyed sailing in the Douglas Channel with his young family. A career move to Alberta paused his sailing career until he discovered the joys of chartering sailboats in the Caribbean.
Following a 20-year career in industrial engineering and project management, Simon decided to make a change. He combined his passion and profession to launch Open Waters Design and Manufacturing in 2016.
He designed and manufactured an 18ft canoe, developing a plug and mold using his proprietary vacuum resin infusion process. After the successful build of the canoe, Simon went on to build a high-performance 18ft A-class foiling sailing catamaran out of carbon fibre, refining both the mold construction and the vacuum resin infusion process.
After researching the various build steps, Simon began with CNC shaping of a plug, hand-finishing, and building the hull molds. He also built the mast, Z foils, and Tee foil rudders. Following successful trials in Vancouver, BC, Simon embarked on his next ambitious project: designing and building the boat he had dreamt about for years.
A boat that could be shipped anywhere in the world, sailed on with his family, and returned to Vancouver for summer cruising — and would be electrically sustainable.
In 2019, Simon was introduced to Hal Whitacre, sparking a design partnership that culminated in the creation of the Open Waters ESC40. Since then Simon Angus has started Open Waters Solar . A marine solar company revolutionizing the marine world.
Hal Whitacre, owner of Whitacre yacht design since 1984 and is responsible for some of the fastest and most luxurious boats ever built.
Hal is Open Waters Chief Naval Architect and has worked closely with Simon over the past 2 years to produce the detailed designs that make up the Open Waters ESC 40.
Hal has a distinguished career in Naval Architecture graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Naval architecture and Marine Engineering.
Throughout his career he has pushed the boundaries of naval architecture notably designing the Open Class 60 “Imagine”; breaking ground with the largest rig ever put on an Open 60.
Hal also owns and operates Bruce Roberts USA and in that capacity, he has designed over 100 steel and aluminium boat kits in addition to many fiberglass and wood sail and power boats. Most recently, Hal was the chief Naval Architect for Gunboat Catamarans when they were built in the USA.
Since their move to Europe, Hal has completed 2 gunboat 55’s along with a conversation of a gunboat 55 to a powercat ferry which has recently conducted successful sea trials.
Hal and his wife Tammy split their time between Annapolis, Md and Sister Bay, Wi. Hal continues to race Lasers during the winter and windsurfs/foilsurfs as much as possible.
Italian yacht builder Rossinavi announced the launch of the M/Y Seawolf X , a hybrid-electric power catamaran capable of cruising in full electric mode for 100 percent of the time on one-day trips.
In a press release from the company, Rossinavi announced the innovative yacht carries the BluE label designating the shipyard’s new sustainable philosophy. Seawolf X has a 140-foot length overall, 45-foot beam and is an all-aluminum vessel that combines sleek design with environmentally friendly solutions.
The press release notes that the catamaran can cruise in full-electric mode for 100 percent of the time on day trips and 90 percent of the time on multi-day trips. Rossinavi also states that the vessel is capable of making transatlantic trips while in electric mode 80 percent of the time.
The Hibernation mode, kicking off when the power catamaran is moored, reduces consumption to a minimum and the energy generated can be given back to the dock or a private property. Rossinavi boasts that the Seawolf X supplies enough energy to charge up an entire villa. The ship’s two diesel generators can quickly recharge its batteries on shore power in five hours.
“After years of study and construction, it is now a source of satisfaction and pride for us to witness the launch of project Sea Cat, now Seawolf X , the first hybrid-electric multihull vessel,” said Rossinavi COO Federico Rossi in a press release. “This yacht showcases remarkable technological innovations in both power management and propulsion technologies, marking the beginning of a new chapter in next-generation vessels.”
Rossinavi’s BluE label hybrid-electric yachts are propelled by batteries and solar panels with the goal of reducing CO2 emissions. Energy collected by these solar panels during the day is stored in advanced batteries and released at night, creating a bioluminescent effect similar to glowing plankton.
On top of its environmental perks, Seawolf X also includes an onboard artificial intelligence system developed by Rossnavi. Rossinavi AI constantly analyzes the operation of the vessel and acts as a brain that can learn from observation and predict the needs of the guests on board. Rossinavi AI is able to talk with crew members and monitor the battery pack to keep it in a range of 20 to 80 percent –the ideal range to ensure better battery pack lifespan.
The boat’s exterior architecture is by Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design , while New-York-based practice Meyer Davis Studio designed the interiors. The Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design team came up with a sleek and low-profile silhouette, reminiscent of a sports car.
The yacht has three distinct spaces for outdoor living: a lively cockpit centered around a pool, a large sundeck with sunbathing and living spaces, and a bow area featuring a hidden pool and convertible home theater. The yacht design team accurately integrated solar panels into the vessel, ensuring plenty of surface space for energy recovery.
“We set out to envision the boat of the future, unbound by convention yet grounded in feasibility with cutting-edge technology for minimal environmental impact,” said Fulvio De Simoni, founder of Fulvio De Simoni Yacht Design, in a press release.
As yacht owners and builders become increasingly aware of environmental issues, electric yachts have come to be one of the nautical industry’s most dynamic trends. With most luxury crafts still relying on fossil fuel use, the impact of yachting on the environment remains a major issue. Fossil fuels damage the environment severely through greenhouse gas emissions. Their extraction process degrades natural ecosystems, while oil spills pollute the oceans with toxins and carcinogens. Her timeless exterior and modern interior features bespoke design by none other than renown Italian yacht designer Marco Casali. Cosmopolitan Yachts just unveiled an electrifying new catamaran.
The simply named Cosmopolitan 125 spans, you guessed it, 125 feet, making it the largest model in the burgeoning Spanish yard’s five-strong lineup. The zero-emission newcomer is also equipped with a hybrid solar-electric propulsion system that makes it cleaner and more efficient on the high seas than traditional diesel-powered yachts of a similar size.

The 125 features a lightweight aluminum exterior and sleek, modern lines. With a focus on sustainable luxury, the cat is replete with innovative, eco-friendly materials and the latest green technologies. Solar panels have been integrated into the rooftop, for instance. The yard didn’t share exact specs but says the yacht can traverse the seas sans emission at a cruising speed of 10 knots.
Described as a floating haven by Cosmopolitan, the multihull has an impressive interior volume of 500 GT and offers nearly 6,500 square feet of deck space. The living quarters are replete with “state-of-the-art amenities and luxurious finishes,” according to the yard.
The spacious layout includes four VIP guest cabins, one owner’s suite with a private terrace, three crew cabins, and a captain’s cabin. The guest accommodation is spread across the lower and main decks, while the owner’s cabin can be positioned on either the main deck or the bridge deck. The crew quarters are located on the lower deck, along with the crew mess, galley, and laundry.
The 125 offers more than just a place to sleep, of course. The main deck is home to a large living room with a TV and game area, while the upper deck is outfitted with a giant dining area and bar. A second bar and a gym can be found on the lower deck. Alfresco lounges are positioned forward and aft, while a helipad sits on the uppermost deck.
One of the standout features of the 125 is the beach club. The innovative platform is fitted with expandable terraces that open directly over the water to transform the stern into what Cosmopolitan calls “a private waterfront resort.” The sprawling space, which affords guests direct and easy access to the sea, can be used for sunbathing, swimming, or sundowners.
Cosmopolitan Yachts was founded by Christian Braun and Iván Salas Jefferson in 2021. Based in Barcelona, the yard specializes in custom aluminum catamarans with highly efficient electric propulsion systems. The range currently includes four models ranging from 70 to 111 feet and, of course, the electrifying new 125.

Silent yachts.
After previously following and reporting on Silent Yachts , the solar-electric boat maker invited me down to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to experience a cruise on the vessel for myself. The SILENT 60 yacht is a solar electric catamaran that represents the future of zero-emissions maritime travel and a mere stepping stone to the more advanced vessels Silent Yachts is already developing next.
For those of you unfamiliar, Silent Yachts was founded by Heike and Michael Köhle, who together have sailed over 75,000 nautical miles around the world. Following their extensive travels at sea, the founders decided there had to be a better way to propel yachts with clean energy.
Their research into solar yacht technologies began in 2004, kicking off five years of gathering sailing data before constructing the company’s first fully self-sufficient solar-powered catamaran , the Solarwave 46.
After a five-year trial at sea that began in 2010, Silent Yachts had a proven solar yacht concept, and began serial production of luxury sustainable vessels in 2016 with the SILENT 64. By 2018, The SILENT 64 had become the first serial-production solar-powered bluewater catamaran to cross the Atlantic, from Cartagena, Spain, to Barbados in 16 days.
In 2021, Silent Yachts launched the SILENT 60 yacht as a more powerful, revamped generation of its 64-foot predecessor. After accepting and invite from Silent Yachts to climb aboard the SILENT 60, I learned much more about the solar electric catamaran firsthand, in addition to what the company has in store next.
Following a quick visit to Silent Yacht’s North American office in south Florida, a couple of other writers and I were invited aboard the SILENT 60 – Silent Yachts 60-foot yacht mentioned above. Two things were particularly interesting about this voyage.
First, I was planning to be at sea all day, but that unfortunately was not the case. It was a trip just over an hour, but certainly enough time to explore the solar electric yacht and enjoy some time in the Florida sun cruising without any emissions.
Another interesting facet to this trip was that we were onboard with several potential customers as well. At a starting price of just over $2.75 million, it’s easy to imagine the level of affluence onboard, and since there were no real introductions, I used it as an opportunity to rub elbows with my ultra-wealthy deck mates.
At one point, one of the potential customers came up to me and asked if I was going to buy one. As a lowly writer no stranger to economy class flights, I naturally said “I’m seriously considering it, but I think I may go bigger.” That customer told me he was going to pull the trigger that day, and two other clients onboard also verbally committed to purchases and did in fact plan to go bigger.
This offers a testament to the quality and luxury of the SILENT 60 electric yacht – just 30 minutes aboard is all it takes to sell itself… as long as you have millions upon millions of dollars. I mean, the tax alone! The vessel we rode aboard had five bed across four separate cabins. Have a look at some of the interior images below.
When we first untied and shoved off, it was amazing to experience how quiet the electric yacht was. I personally think this is a huge selling point for potential customers if you can get them on the water.
We were aboard the original two-deck version of the SILENT 60 yacht, which has since been replaced by the SILENT 62 three-deck option , based on the fact that a majority of customers favored the third deck. While our solar electric catamaran didn’t have the wing sail we covered when it debuted, it still had plenty of cool electrified specs to offer.
Truthfully, the SILENT 60 I got to ride upon offers clean quiet energy in the utmost form of luxury, but Silent Yachts isn’t the only one doing it. That being said, the electric yacht builder appears to be growing at a quick rate, especially in terms of innovation. Selling your products for multimillions probably helps with the R&D budget too.
Many of the features and customizations I was able to see up close on the SILENT 60 have already been improved and implemented on newer, upcoming electric yacht models. I already mentioned the three-deck layout, which can be assembled to multiple forms of open or closed walls depending on customer preference.
Silent Yachts is also going longer in its maritime range of available options. However, some of those larger vessels will be hybrid models to haul the larger ships, so that’s not much interest to me. What is of interest however are some of the new technologies Kyle Miller teased me with.
Silent Yachts is working on developing its own electric dingy which will sit on the rear deck of the SILENT 62 and in the hull of the SILENT 80. Other technologies mentioned were the possibility of liquid cooled batteries, and bi-directional charging.
The boat maker announced Silent Resorts earlier this year, focused on zero-carbon fully sustainable destinations for the electric yachts to venture to. The first meeting between the Lena Yakut people and groups of Russians occurred in the mid seventeenth century. Tygyn, toyon (prince) of the Khangalassky Yakuts, granted some territory for Russian building-sites. The Lensky Ostrog (Lensky Stockade) – future city of Yakutsk – was founded by Russian Cossack sotnik (lieutenant) Pyotr Beketov from the Enissey river. The 25th of September, 1632 is the date of the first stockade construction. In August, 1638, the Moscow Government formed a new administrative unit – Yakutsky uyezd – with a center in Lensky stockade. That is how a very distant “small town” became the center of huge territory under the command of the Moscow government.
Russians established agriculture. The members of religious groups who were banished to Yakutia in the second half of the nineteenth century, made a progressive impact on the agricultural development of the region. Skoptsi, dukhobors, and old-believers started to grow wheat, oats, and potatoes. Fur trade established commodity-money relations, that developed in the seventh decade of the eighteenth century after the abolition of the fur trade tax.
In the beginning of the XX century everyday life in Yakut region (the way how our republic was called at that time) was not much different from that in the early times. Yakut people were still the most numerous ethnicity. Besides, the administrative center of Russia was far away; therefore people mainly continued to live by life of their ancestors – celebrated their holydays, bred cattle, followed the plow, fished and hunted. They had to work all year round hard to survive – making preparations and provisions in summer and constant struggle with frost in winter. The housefather had to feed all his large family and cattle, the housemother had to raise the children and see after household.
The level of living was low – a very few people could read and write, the married couples tried to bear as many children as possible in order to be sure that at least some of them will grow up till mature age. A lot of people died because of starvation, severe climatic conditions and diseases. Medicine was not developed, especially in the country area. If someone was seriously sick, the only hope was on the help of shaman. At that time there were still many shamans, some of whom were really powerful and could help people. It was believed that they could turn into the animals, communicate with the spirits, cure diseases and curse people with whom they are angry.

8 January, 2011 / Air temperature of minus 61.2 degrees Celsius was reported last night in Oimyakon settlement in Yakutia Republic, known as the cold pole. Not so cold at all, in 1933 the temperature registered was minus 67.7.
According to archaeological studies, ancient people inhabited the Lena River region in the early Paleolithic. A lot of archaeological monuments dated from 300,000 to 10,000 years ago were found. From the middle of the first millennium AD, the ancestors of the Evens and Evenks began to settle here. By the 13th century, the Tungusic tribes settled in the Middle Lena, Viluy, Olekma.
The arrival of the ancestors of the Yakuts or Sakha (endonym) forced them to move to the west and east of the Lena. Livestock development brought major changes in the economic life of the region. The Yakuts brought handicraft production (blacksmithing, jewelry, pottery etc.) and construction of permanent dwellings.
In the first quarter of the 17th century, the Cossacks reached the banks of the Lena River. The fortified settlements of Lensky (Yakutsk), Zhigansk, Verkhoyansk, Zashiversk, Srednekolymsk were founded. They became the advanced posts for Russian colonists, who moved to the northeast Asia.
When Yakutia (the region of the Lena River) joined the Russian state, its main indigenous population were the Yakuts, the most northern in the world sedentary herders, who were engaged in breeding of cattle and horses, hunting, fishing, blacksmithing. They created a wonderful heroic epic - Olonkho, unique material and spiritual culture.

In 1632, Lensky (present Yakutsk) fortified settlement was founded on the right bank of the Lena River. This date is considered to be the date of Yakutia joining the Russian state. In January 1634, a large group of the Yakuts (about 1,000 people) besieged the fort that was defended by about 200 Cossacks, but could not capture it. But they continued to resist the Russian colonization for a long time or moved to remote areas. In 1638, the Yakutsk region was formed.
It became the Yakutsk Governorate in 1775, and Yakutsk Oblast in 1784. In the 18th century, the Christianization of the indigenous population began. Almost from the beginning (the 1640s), Yakutia was used by the Russian authorities as a place of exile. In the 19th century, Yakutia became a place of political exile. Decembrists as well as the participants of the Polish uprising of 1863 and others were exiled here.
In 1917, the population of Yakutsk Oblast was over 264,000 people. About 84% of the population lived in rural areas. Almost the same percentage of the regional population were the Yakuts, 9.5% - Russians, 6.5% - Evenks, Evens, Yukaghir, Chukchi, and others.
In 1922, the Yakutian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed as part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. The Soviet period in the history of Yakutia is associated with large-scale industrial development of its natural resources. In the 1930s, exploitation of the Northern Sea Route began, Tiksi seaport was constructed in the mouth of the Lena River.
In 1939, the population of the region amounted to 413,000 people, 65.5% of the population were the Yakuts, 35.5% - Russians, 3.3% - Evenks and Evens. During the Second World War, more than 63,000 people were drafted into the Red Army, about 35,000 people were killed or gone missing.
In the 1950s, rich diamond deposits were discovered in the west of Yakutia. On September 27, 1990, a new period in the history of Yakutia began, when the declaration of independence of the republic was adopted. In 1991, the republic received a new name - the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Yakutia is the largest administrative and territorial region in the world and the largest subject of the Russian Federation. Yakutia is larger than Argentina - the eighth largest country in the world. The territory of the republic stretches for 2,500 km from north to south and 2,000 km from west to east. The distance from Moscow to Yakutsk by roads is about 8,300 km.
Almost half of the region (about 40%) is located in the Arctic Circle. In the north the Sakha Republic is washed by the Laptev Sea and East Siberian Sea. The total length of the coastline exceeds 4,500 km. Yakutia is characterized by the diversity of natural conditions and resources.
The Republic of Sakha is often called the land of rivers (over 700,000) and lakes (over 800,000). The total length of all the rivers is about 2 million km. The largest navigable rivers are the Lena (4,400 km), Viluy (2,650 km), Olenek (2,292 km), Aldan (2,273 km), Kolyma (2,129 km), Indigirka (1,726 km), Olekma (1,436 km), Anabar (939 km), and Yana (872 km).
The climate is sharply continental with long winters and short summers. It is one of the coldest places in the world. The Cold Pole of the Northern Hemisphere is located in Oymyakon, one of the coldest permanently inhabited locales on Earth, in winter the temperature can drop below 65 degrees Celsius. April and October are winter months in Yakutia. Almost the entire territory of the region is located in the permafrost zone.
The national composition according to the 2010 Census: Yakuts (49.9%), Russians (37.8%), Evenks (2.2%), Ukrainians (2.2%), Evens (1.6%), Tatars (0.9%). The largest cities and towns are Yakutsk (341,200) Neryungri (59,500), Mirny (35,800), Lensk (23,200), Aldan (21,500). Yakutsk is the largest city in the world located in the permafrost zone.
State holidays of Yakutia:
Today, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has a developed mining industry extracting gold, diamonds, oil, natural gas, coal, and various metals. Elkonskoye uranium deposit, the largest in Russia, is located here. Yakutia is also known for its furs and mammoth tusks.
The main industries are non-ferrous metallurgy, mining of diamonds and gold (about 90% of all Russian diamonds and 24% of gold), coal mining, forest and wood processing, light and food industries. The tourism industry is developing rapidly. Agriculture produces milk, meat, vegetables, furs, reindeer.
Most of the cargo is transported by waterways. In the navigation period, the main waterways are the Lena (with its tributaries the Vilyui and Aldan), Yana, Indigirka, and Kolyma. Goods to the northern districts of the republic are delivered by the Northern Sea Route.
In 2008, the federal highway “Kolyma” (Yakutsk-Magadan) was opened for year-round exploitation. Due to the low number of roads, air transport is relatively well developed. There are more than 30 airports in the republic.
Yakutia is one of the rare places on our planet with preserved primeval nature and an amazing variety of flora and fauna. The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) has over 30% of Russian wildlife. More than 90% of the territory is unaffected or slightly affected by industrial development.
The main attractions of Yakutia are:
Kisilyakh Mount (“stone people” in the Yakut language) is known for its picturesque piles of stones resembling blurry silhouettes of people.
Lena and Sinskiye Pillars - two series of steep, vertical cliffs located 200 km from Yakutsk, on the banks of the Lena and Sinyaya rivers. These rocks have different fancy shapes: columns, spiers and towers. Many of them have traces of ancient rock paintings.
Memorial Museum “Yakutsk political exile” in the village of Cherkyokh - an open-air museum that includes two dozen objects. The main purpose of the museum is to demonstrate how Russian culture, brought to Yakutia by political exiles, affected the lives of local people.
Lensky historical and architectural museum-reserve “Druzhba” (“friendship”) in Sottintsy village, 70 km from Yakutsk, has interesting old wooden monuments, the oldest of them date back to the 17th century.
Olekminsk Reserve - one of the most interesting nature reserves of Yakutia with a lot of bears, moose, deer and other wildlife.
Lake Ulakhan-Ary-Kyuyele located on Ulakhan-Ary Island in Anabar national district.
Ust-Vilyusky National Park located in the scenic valley between the rivers of Lyampushka and Dyanyshka, near Verkhoyansk Range.
Zoo “Orto-Doydu” , located 50 km south of Yakutsk, has more than 150 animals (white-tailed eagles, golden eagles, spotted deer, Siberian tigers, Asian spruce grouse and others).
Diamond quarry “Mir” in the town of Mirny is a man-made attraction. It is one of the largest quarries in the world with the diameter of 1,200 meters.
