Boating has become even more popular during the past year. Given its’ appeal, here are the top YouTube boating channels that I follow and you should consider too.

BOAT US (Boater Education)

Boat US is one of the oldest and most respected organizations that represents boaters. This YouTube channel is great because it features lots of meaningful content, specifically, content relating to education, safety, boat types, boat handling techniques and so much more. This is a great foundational channel to subscribe to. In addition, Boat US is an organization you should consider joining . I’ve been a member for over 20 years and love it.

DISCOVER BOATING (Boater Education and Reviews)

Discover Boating is the public awareness effort powered by the North American recreational boating company. This YouTube channel focuses on mostly boat models and boat activities. The goal of this channel is to make new boaters or prospective boaters informed about what type of boat to buy and the boating lifestyle.

BOATTEST.COM (Boat Reviews)

BoatTEST.com has been consistently providing quality content for over 20 years. This YouTube channel has over 3,000 videos that consist of tests, reviews, factory tours and interviews. It’s another foundational channel that you should consider subscribing to.

ZIP ZAP POWER (Boats Traversing Inlets)

As far as I can tell, Zip Zap Power is one of the first YouTube channels to focus on the boats traversing Haulover Inlet. Since then, numerous other sites have followed Zip Zap’s lead. The reason is simple…entertaining content! I enjoy this channel because I like seeing all the different types of beautiful boats and also enjoy watching to see if the boat captains have success or encounter difficulties. The sea deserves respect and so does this channel.

BRONCOS GURU (Mix of Boating Fails)

Bronos Guru is kind of like the “Qualified Captain” of YouTube. For those who don’t know, “The Qualified Captain” is one of the most popular boating sites on Instagram but they don’t have a YouTube channel. Bronco’s channel is kind of like it. It’s very entertaining to watch and equally shocking at the same time. It’s amazing to me how many bad boaters exist on the water! You will definitely want to subscribe to this channel.

THE 10 BEST FLORIDA WATERFRONT RESTAURANTS FOR BOATERS

WAVY BOATS (Boats Traversing Inlets)

Wavy Boats is another of the original YouTube channels that focused on Haulover Inlet and I enjoy it for all the same reasons as Zip Zap Power. Wavy Boats appears to be the sister channel to Broncos Guru and is narrated by the same person.

BORN AGAIN BOATING (Maintenance, Repairs)

Born Again Boating is a fantastic YouTube channel. Its focus is on outboard motor repair and other projects relating to boating and other machinery. The creator of this channel knows his stuff! Born Again Boating has only been around since 2017 but it already has a ton of followers and it’s easy to see why. Definitely consider subscribing to this channel.

OUT ON THE REEF (Small Boat Excursions)

I like this channel because the creator uses a simple boat that everyone can relate to. Out of the Reef not only spends time fishing but he also spends time teaching his viewers about his boat projects, maintenance, overnight excursions and general boating. I really enjoy his content and I think you will too.

FLORIDA POWERBOAT CLUB (Speedboats, Babes and Poker Runs)

Florida Powerboat Club is pretty much as described in the title, “Speedboats, Babes and Poker Runs”. This YouTube channel is the product of Stu Jones. Stu is a leader in the powerboat industry and knows his stuff. This channel is filled with all kinds of eye candy and is worth following for sure.

FRESCO CHANNEL (South Florida Family Boating)

I started following Fresco Channel a couple of years ago and I really enjoy his content. What I like most is that the channel is family-oriented and Fresco takes his viewers on weekend trips throughout South Florida. Recently, his family purchased a house on the West Coast of Florida so I’m sure lots of new content is coming.

LAZY LOCATIONS (Boating Locations)

Of course, I’m partial to this one because it’s my own. Lazy Locations focuses on boating and beach locations all over Florida and The Bahamas. I initially started the channel to house 360 videos for my website (lazylocations.com) but it has become a channel that now details traditional videos and “how to” videos. This channel is a must for the new boater or someone who’s considering buying a boat or looking for that secluded beach. It’s also great for seasoned boaters who want to explore new locations.

THE TOP FLORIDA WATERFRONT HOTELS WITH BOAT SLIPS

CENTER CONSOLES ONLY (Boat Reviews)

Center Consoles Only is a great channel because they focus on high quality boating reviews of center console boats. If you’re in the market for a large center console (typically, over 30ft) this channel is for you.

JARED WATNEY (Life Aboard a Mega Yacht)

Jared Watney is a fantastic YouTube channel if you like Mega Yachts. Jared is a crewman onboard a 148” luxury vessel called “Bella”. His channel is filled with content that inspires, informs, and shows the pros and cons of the Mega Yacht life.

SAILING DOODLES (Sailing Adventures)

There are a ton of YouTube channels that focus on sailing but Sailing Doodles is probably my favorite because its’ founder is relatable and the content is a little more fun. Recently, he purchased a powerboat so the channel will have both power and sail, making it a little more unique than the others.

FLEMING YACHTS (Global Cruising)

I love this channel because not only are these boats beautiful but the cruising content is amazing and captivating. The “Venture” series is breathtaking. I highly recommend Fleming Yachts to add to your YouTube boating channel list.

ABOARD MERMAID MONSTER (Family Living Aboard a Nordhavn)

I just discovered this channel recently. Aboard Mermaid Monster is about a Southern California couple who sold everything and live on a 55’ Nordhavn full time with two young kids. This is a great channel for those who are considering doing the same thing. It’s also great because it’s one of the few cruising channels that is powerboat-focused instead of sailing-focused.

ALFRED MONTANER (Boat Shows, Reviews and Boat Ramp Chaos)

Alfred Montaner is another South Florida native who focuses on boating. However, his content is mainly about boat shows, boat reviews and boat ramp chaos. It’s a pretty entertaining channel with a home grown, unpolished feel. I enjoy it because it’s simple and Alfred has a happy attitude and strong passion for boats.

I utilize the service and benefits of Boat U.S.  They are a great organization that every boater should consider. You should too.  Click HERE to learn more.

Basic Powerboat Maneuvers Videos

Us powerboating provides a variety of resources to help boaters educate themselves. below are a series of videos and animations that depict some of the on-the-water maneuvers all boaters should be able to perform..

After checking an area, approach the anchoring spot slowly, heading into the wind or current, whichever is stronger. Stop the boat and lower the anchor over bow- do not throw it.

The end of the rode should be attached to the boat before releasing the anchor. Let out the anchor line as the boat drifts downwind. If the wind has too little effect, back the boat very slowly while letting the line run out freely. Avoid backing too fast, which could cause the anchor to bounce along the bottom.

When a scope of 5:1 has been let out, wrap the line around the bow cleat and reverse slowly against it until it becomes taut.

Moorings typically have a large buoy that is attached to an anchor on the bottom with chain. The driver should approach the mooring with it on his side of the boat to keep it in sight throughout the maneuver. Approach at minimum control speed from a position downwind of the buoy, or down current if stronger. Shift into neutral. Use reverse if needed to stop boat. Pick up and secure mooring pennant.

When backing up into the wind or downwind, use minimum control speed. When backing towards the wind the combination of windage and pivot point will help you hold course. It may be more difficult to maintain your course when backing downwind.

If the bow falls off too much you will loose steering control. Before this happens, shift to forward gear and bring the boat back on course. Then back up again with perhaps a slight steering correction to compensate for the wind’s effect.

To master this important maneuver you need to be aware of how your powerboat steers and reacts to changes in throttle and gearshift in different wind and current conditions. Place fenders at dock level and prepare dock lines before making the final approach. Be sure everyone knows what to do with the dock lines.

Come alongside the dock with the bow pointing into the wind or current, whichever is stronger. Approach the dock slowly at a 25 to 45 degree angle and use intermittent power to maintain minimum control speed.

When the bow is 1/2 to one boat length from the dock, make a smooth turn to bring the boat almost parallel to the dock by turning the wheel and briefly shifting into forward. Then shift to neutral. Turn the wheel toward the dock and briefly shift to reverse to bring the stern in as the boat stops.

To avoid a possible collision with a submerged object or another boat it maybe necessary to stop your boat quickly. To be able to respond promptly, keep one hand on the throttle and the other on the steering wheel at all times. All occupants should be in their seats and have a secure grip on the boat. As a boat rolls in a tight turn, it always slides sideways. There is a risk in some boats of the boat’s wake coming over the transom. To avoid this flooding problem, reduce throttle to idle rpm. Make a 90-degree turn. Shift into neutral.

The key to holding position is to anticipate boat drift and make small, gentle corrections early rather than large powerful corrections late. There are two methods for holding position: Bow into Waves, and Stern into Waves.

Since the bow will usually have a tendency to turn away from the wind, you will have to compensate for this by periodically shifting into forward gear and making slight steering corrections to bring the bow back into the wind. Because the bow wants to turn downwind, it is usually easier to hold position with the stern into the wind, provided the waves don’t come over the transom.

Backing away from a dock usually offers the best maneuvering control. It also avoids a problem inherent to forward departures when the boat starts to turn and its stern swings into the dock, preventing the boat from departing cleanly.

Start by turning the wheel away from the dock, which rotates the propeller away from the dock. Shift into reverse, the stern swings away from the dock as the boat backs away. To avoid scraping the bow against the dock, make your turning angle slight.

When clear of the dock, turn the wheel in the opposite direction to bring the boat parallel to the dock. Center the wheel, pause briefly in neutral while counting 1-2-3, then shift to forward.

Minimum control speed is the slowest speed at which you can operate and still maintain steering control. Typically, this is less than the speed produced when the engine is in gear and the throttle is set at idle rpm, and is accomplished by the use of intermittent power.

With the throttle at idle rpm, shift from neutral to forward and back to neutral. This produces a short, gentle pulse of power to maintain steering control. Repeat this technique to keep the boat under control and moving slowly.

If a person falls overboard, immediately swing the stern and propeller away from the person in the water. Shout “Crew Overboard!” and throw buoyant objects such as cushions and life rings toward the person. Assign a spotter. Designate someone to point to the person. Maneuver the boat into a position downwind.

Approach slowly using intermittent power, bow first pointing into the wind and waves with the person in the water on the driver’s side. Shift into neutral and coast to the person. When contact is made, shut off the engine. Attach the person to the boat using a looped line. Assist the person to get back into the boat.

Use a pivot turn to turn your boat in a confined area. Starting at rest, turn the wheel hard over and shift into gear at idle rpm to initiate the pivot turn. Shift into neutral and turn the wheel hard over in the opposite direction, while counting 1-2-3. Shift into reverse at idle rpm to continue the turn, and repeat the steps until the boat has completed the turn.

Capsize Rescue – Centerboard Push

Before initiating a centerboard push rescue, ensure that the sailors are safely in the safety-rescue boat. Begin by grabbing the centerboard of the sailboat and push downward until the boat comes upright. As the boat begins to come upright, grab the gunwale and shroud to complete the righting process. The sailors may now re-enter the sailboat.

Capsize Rescue – Mast tip Lift

The mast tip lift method can be used when the sailors are still in the water. Using minimum control speed, slowly approach from a direction forward of the mast. This keeps the powerboat from running over the mainsail and avoids interference with the sail as the boat comes upright.

Make contact near the top of the mast and turn off the engine. If the mast tip is submerged too far below the water to reach, approach the boat perpendicular to the forestay, grab the forestay or shroud and walk hand over hand up the mast. Lift the mast tip and move hand over hand down the mast and shroud to bring the boat upright.

Towing another boat alongside is often used when bringing a disabled boat into a dock. The towboat should be positioned so that its propeller is far enough aft of the other boat’s stern to turn the tow in either direction.

Fenders should be rigged between the boats to prevent damage. Tie the boats together tightly using bow, stern and spring lines, so there is no movement between them. If a line is slack, it will reduce the maneuverability of the tow.

When coming alongside a dock, approach it at minimum control speed with the other boat on the dockside.

Boating Knots

Knots are essential to every boater. Below you will find a series of instructional videos that will help you tie some of the more common knots used while boating.

The 10 Biggest Sailing YouTubers Right Now

Feeling a little bit blue after your yacht charter holiday? Thanks to the world wide web, you can always go on a virtual-navigation on your sofa whenever you want. Here are the top 10 sailing YouTubers who share their glorious sailing lives to millions of viewers. How does it feel like to live on your boat for five years? Is it expensive to sail around the world? Find out all the answers in their videos!

1. Sailing La Vagabonde

They are an Australian couple with the dream of circumnavigating the globe by sailboat… initially having no clue of how to sail. Elayna and Riley have now sailed over 88,395nm each across many oceans. Through their videos, they hope to inspire their fellow sailors to explore alternative options of living and to spread ocean awareness. They update the followers of their lives every Monday/Tuesday.

2. Sailing Project Atticus

Jordan and Desiree spent 3 years fixing up their 30-foot sailboat “Atticus,” and left their home, America, with only 2,000 dollars. That money took them to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Then they had to do boat repairing jobs to save enough money to sail again. Now they are still sailing around the world on a budget and working along the way to make ends meet. They believe you don’t need a lot of money to follow your dreams, you just need a LOT of HARD WORK!

3. Finding Avalon

Jackson and Xanthe, a young couple who met in an aprĂ©s-ski bar in the Snowy Mountains of Australia and instantly bonded over a love for adventure, travel and the ocean. Jackson is and always has been a sailor, and it didn’t take long for him to make a sailor out of Xanthe. The idea of buying a yacht and sailing around the world was dreamt up by Jackson when he was traveling globally to compete in sailing regattas.

So they bought Finding Avalon in Croatia in the middle of 2018. She is a 38ft Elan Impression from 2005 and a former charter boat. Jackson and Xanthe have traveled to many rather incredible places along the way.

4. GoSea Sailing

The GoSea family has three people and two pets, they share 28 feet of space as they embark on a mission to see as much of the world as possible. From sailing with a monkey in Africa, swimming with great white sharks buying and fixing a boat that they bought for $1 – The GoSea family film it all.

5. Sailing Zatara

After Renee and her husband entered their mid-40s, they realized they were completely exhausted with corporate America. Something definitely had to change. So, they sold their house in Texas and bought a sailboat, regardless of having no prior sailing experience and set sail with their 4 kids. Since the beginning of this crazy impromptu adventure in late 2016, the family has now sailed over 30,000 nautical miles: the first year in a monohull (Beneteau 55′), the rest in a catamaran (Privilege 585).

6. Lazy Gecko Sailing & Adventures

Meet Jeremiah, Brittany, and their kids! They are a family that sold everything that they own, bought a sailboat, moved aboard, and are now traveling full-time! They not only sail places but also explore this crazy world by other means.

7. Free Range Sailing

Watch how Troy and Pascale cruise remote Australia in their tiny home, a 30′ yacht named Mirrool. This couple takes a minimalist approach to life and focuses on the experience of doing more with less. They spend months on their boat in remote locations where self-sufficiency is a way of life. And they are very willing to share the lessons they’ve learned with the viewers.

8. MJ Sailing

After Matt & Jessica Johnson circumnavigating the North Atlantic in their last boat Serendipity, (1989 Sabre Targa 34), this couple took on a 2 year complete refit of their new boat, Elements of Life. She is a custom aluminum 37′ Trisalu, built in Quebec in 1983. They have sailed 20,500nm since 2012….and counting!

9. Sailing Doodles

The Sailing Doodles are currently on a 10-month sail from Vancouver Canada all the way to Thailand with their two full-sized Labradoodles named Maverick and Goose. Follow along with them as they sail down the west coast of the USA, down into Mexico, and across the Pacific Ocean to Asia. You can even sail with them for $125/day, check out  their website  for more information.

10. Gone with the Wynns

Jason and Nikki Wynn, a couple of perpetual travelers, Sailors, RV’ers and modern day documentarians. They believe that sailing is like exploring the world like its 1492. This form of travel is all about the journey. Moving a pace set by the breeze, weathering storms and 100% prepared to discover the adventures we don’t yet know exist. They sail a 2005 Robertson and Caine Leopard 43 Sailing Catamaran, and they share their trips on YouTube frequently.

All square after epic Louis Vuitton Cup Final opener + What we learned from today’s racing

It's one win apiece after the first day of Louis Vuitton Cup Final racing, with big winds and waves making for impressive viewing

powerboats youtube

INEOS Britannia and Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli faced off in the first day of Louis Vuitton Cup Final racing to decide which of these challengers would face Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup itself.

The first day of racing in the Louis Vuitton Cup Final was always due to be pretty wild with wind forecast to be in the high teens and a predicted swell of approaching 2m. And sure enough the wind was up with 16 -22 knots from the southwest blowing across the race course in Barcelona.

Earlier in the day the Youth America’s Cup Final had seen Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli win the Youth America’s Cup Final against American Magic in the AC40 class. That match race had shown some pretty wild conditions but by the time the AC75s took the water for their racing the breeze had increased again.

It was clearly going to be a wild ride for both teams and the wind was stronger than anything we have seen the AC75s compete in to date. But more than the wind speed, it was the large waves that looked to cause the biggest issues for the teams today.

Key takeaways from the Louis Vuitton Cup Final Day 1

  • In these top-end conditions Luna Rossa is now looking (slightly) the quicker boat
  • As expected this will be a very tight series
  • INEOS manoeuvres seemed slightly more on edge – particularly in race 1

Race 1 Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli Vs INEOS Britannia

Skippers Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli: Jimmy Spithill & Francesco Bruni INEOS Britannia: Ben Ainslie & Dylan Fletcher

With the wind up, the Race Committee had made the call to increase the course length to 8 laps, as compared to the more usual 6 laps that we have seen in the Louis Vuitton Cup thus far.

At the start Luna Rossa were the first team to gybe around at the right hand boundary and, with plenty of time to the start INOES allowed the Italians to turn first, gybing around behind the Italians and following them around.

The Italians cruised relatively slowly down that boundary, followed by the Brits. It temporarily looked as though Spithill and Bruni had made the wrong call as they started heading back to the line. INEOS followed Luna Rossa with a lot of sped and looked to be in a great position to get underneath their competitors.

Spithill and Bruni had done a great job of their time on distance from a long way back and were able to accelerate and hit the startline slightly late. But, crucially, the Brits follwing back were a little later and to leeward, having been fooled by the Italians into being a late back to the line.

The Brits tacked off immediately at the start, and by the first cross Luna Rossa was well clear on port tack.

powerboats youtube

Coming into the windward gate, Luna Rossa were clear ahead of the Brits and tacked dead in front of them to round the right hand mark (looking upwind) with an 11 second lead over the Brits who followed them around the same mark.

Around the first leeward gate, again both boats took the right hand mark (looking upwind) with the Brits tacking immediately around the mark once again 11 seconds back. These decisions to not split at the gates were a clear sign of the conditions, which made for difficult manoeuvres.

But on the downwind and also around the leeward mark, the Brits looked to be a little looser than the Italians in the manoeuvres and were making the lion’s share of the small errors, with touchdowns being a lot more of a regular experience for the Brits in the lumpy conditions.

From here Spithill and Bruni did an excellent job of covering Ainslie and Fletcher, forcing the British team to either spend time in dirty air or make additional manoeuvres.

There was only one wobble for the Italians on the second downwind they seemed to get some foil ventilation, which resulted in a big slide to leeward and by the time they were properly back on their feet the Brits had closed up. But it wasn’t enough for INEOS to mount a realistic challenge.

“We had a little moment, yeah,” said Bruni of that downwind after racing. “We are fighting a lot with the sliding at times. It’s easy to fly slightly too high and lose control fairly quickly but it’s all about recovering quickly and the boys did really well at that.”

After that moment, it looked a fairly simple job for Spithill and Bruni to continue to cover the Brits and Luna Rossa was able to step away to take a well-deserved first win of this Louis Vuitton Final Series by a convincing 46 seconds.

“It’s probably the windiest we have ever races with to date. And the waves are making it very hard on the left of the course,” said a happy Bruni of the conditions.

“It’s top end for these boats as you can see , it’s a real challenge for both teams to stay on their feet,” agreed Ainslie.

What did we learn from the Louis Vuitton Cup Final Race 1?

INEOS had looked for all the world the stronger of the challengers in windier weather to date, but Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli looked a good match for the British.

“We made a bit of a mess of the start but they just looked to have the legs on us in this stuff,” said Ainslie after racing, which will be a concern for British fans to hear. However, as Ainslie acknowledges the British team were pretty poor in the start and never gave themselves a chance. In these conditions with manoeuvres looking to be tough passing opportunities are always going to be few and far between.

My view would be that Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli looks stronger than they have to date in windier weather, but the winning margin is probably not representative of the differential between the teams.

That being said, Luna Rossa looked to be the more polished team in these frenetic conditions – and indeed have looked the most polished team throughout in terms of manoeuvres. Of course it’s always easier to be calmer when you are controlling the race, but this was a fairly ominous performance overall from the Italian team.

Race 2 INEOS Britannia Vs  Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli

Both the waves and the wind had increased for the second race of the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and for the first time this regatta the racing was delayed due to the wind averages being over those allowed to start a race (averaging over 21 knots). We have seen plenty of racing delayed to date, but it has always been due to winds being too light to start a race.

After a 10 minute delay to racing, the breeze finally dropped below the required average and the start of the second race was go.

Once again with the wind and waves both at the top end of that which the AC75s can cope with, both teams looked a little cagey in the start box, as had been the case in the first race of the day.

Ainslie and Fletcher on INEOS elected to tack round at the right hand boundary in the pre-start while Spithill and Bruni on Luna Rossa gybed around looking to push the Brits back to the line early.

Heading back to the line Luna Rossa were to windward, with INEOS to leeward, but once again both crews were late coming back to the line and they were both well back at the start gun, with the Brits to leeward and a little ahead.

Both boats went all the way to the left hand boundary and INEOS tacked with the ‘water’ advantage to force Luna Rossa to tack at the same time. What followed was a fascinating drag race, with both boats on port tack heading to the right hand boundary. And both boats looked very evenly matched in a straight line with INEOS potentially getting a little bow-forward on their competition.

Before the boundary Luna Rossa elected to tack away and the Brits just managed to tack right in front of the Italians to force them to tack straight back – an impressive bit of work by Ainslie and Fletcher but it was a fairly high risk move as we have seen a lot of teams try the same only to allow their opposition to foot through them to leeward. The Brits stood on on starboard to reach the layline for the windward gate.

powerboats youtube

INEOS Britannia showed a decent turn of pace downwind. Photo: Richardo Pinto / America’s Cup

At the windward gate for the first time it was INEOS Britannia who rounded the right hand mark with a 7 second lead over the Italians who rounded the opposite gate mark, having put in an extra tack.

On the first downwind the Brits looked to have sailed away a little bit and sure enough round the leeward gate they had extended up to a 17 second lead, demonstrating the downwind pace we have seen from INEOS throughout the Louis Vuitton Cup.

The Italians had once again managed to get to the opposite mark on the leeward gate and, on the early part of the upwind, won back a healthy amount of distance with a nice port tack shift as they came back from the left of the course.

By the first cross on the second upwind the Brits were leading still, but it was closer and Ainslie and Fletcher once again aimed to tack right in front of the Italian team.

Luna Rossa managed to put their boat into a really impressive high mode, though and actually managed to gap off INEOS’ windward hip and live there all the way to layline. By the next windward gate, Luna Rossa followed the Brits around the right hand gate mark, but were back to only 7 seconds behind.

Once again INEOS was showing a turn of speed on the downwind and used this pace to step away a little from the Italian team to lead around the next gate by 13 seconds, but Luna Rossa were once again able to gybe late to get a split out of the gate. Unlike last lap, this time the Italians were headed to the ‘wrong’ side of the course and they could not make significant gains.

The race continued to stay close but the ebbs and flows were the same, the British team had a slight pace advantage downwind but, despite INEOS Britannia having the pick of the tactics, Luna Rossa managed to hold onto the coat-tails of the British team and never looked like they would go away, maintaining a gap of around 10 seconds give or take.

The lead had blown out a little by the finish as Spithill and Bruni tried throwing in a couple of extra gybes on the last downwind. So INEOS crossed the finish 18 seconds clear and took the second race of the day.

“I think we sailed the boat a bit better in that race and it was a good one,” said Ainslie after the race. “We managed to get a good jump up the top of that first beat. To be fair to the Italians they managed to stay pretty close to us throughout.”

“We’ve had two good races today, I think the performance was pretty similar between the boats today. It was really challenging, a bit like driving a Ferrari on ice,” said Spithill of the day’s racing.

What did we learn from the Louis Vuitton Cup Final Race 2?

These two boats are clearly very close in terms of outright performance in today’s conditions. And a win in the second race of the day will be a relief for the Brits after losing the first. But Luna Rossa looked the stronger boat (and arguably team) on balance over the course of the day

That the Italians were calmly able to get splits at most gate marks, showed their superior manoeuvring today and that they managed to remain within touching distance of the Brits despite being on the unfavoured side of the course speaks a great deal about their pace.

However, we did see INEOS Britannia demonstrating stronger pace downwind, which has long been a strength of theirs.

All-in-all one race apiece is probably a fair result and the passing opportunities in these windy conditions were few and far between, so the main takeaway is (as ever) ‘win the start, and you’ll probably win the race…’

Roll on races three and four on a light winds Saturday 28 September.

Two Kodiak trawlers caught 2,000 king salmon. Now, a whole fishery is closed.

powerboats youtube

Federal managers shut down a major Alaska fishery Wednesday after two Kodiak-based boats targeting whitefish caught some 2,000 king salmon — an unintentional harvest that drew near-instant condemnation from advocates who want better protections for the struggling species.

The Kodiak-based trawl fleet has caught just over one-fourth of its seasonal quota of pollock — a whitefish that’s typically processed into items like fish sticks, fish pies and surimi, the paste used to make fake crab.

But about 20 boats will now be forced to end their season weeks before its Nov. 1 closure, with hundreds of jobs at shore-based processing plants also in jeopardy, to make sure the fleet doesn’t exceed its yearly cap on its unintentional king salmon harvest — some 18,000 fish.

“From a community perspective, it’s huge,” said Julie Bonney, who runs a trade group, the Alaska Groundfish Data Bank , that represents the trawlers and processing companies. “Nobody’s happy about the closure, but they understand the reason.”

The incident is sure to draw more scrutiny on the issue of bycatch — the industry term for the unintended harvest, typically of salmon or halibut, by boats targeting other species.

Tribal advocates and conservation groups, for the past several years, have been making increasingly urgent pleas to managers to crack down on bycatch by trawl vessels, which can scoop up salmon in the nets they drag through the water targeting pollock and other lower-value species.

Those groups’ focus has largely been on bycatch by pollock trawlers in the Bering Sea.

The salmon caught Sunday were harvested using the same type of nets used by trawlers in the Bering Sea, but in a different area of the ocean, the central Gulf of Alaska.

Most of the salmon caught as bycatch in the gulf are from British Columbia and the U.S. West Coast, according to genetic data published by federal scientists.

But some also come from neighboring Alaska rivers, particularly in Southeast Alaska but also in small proportions from the Copper and Kenai rivers.

King salmon in many of those Alaska rivers have struggled in recent years — forcing closures and restrictions on other fishermen, and even a petition to list Gulf of Alaska kings as endangered.

[ Federal agency launches yearlong review over whether to list Alaska king salmon as endangered species ]

The two Kodiak trawlers caught the salmon Sunday. Bonney and federal managers declined to identify the two vessels, but a co-owner of one of them, the Evie Grace, confirmed that it had harvested more than 1,200 kings in an event he called a “lightning strike.”

Up to that point in the season, the most king salmon that the Evie Grace had caught in a single trip was 53, and its total harvested over 11 trips was 270, said Kent Helligso, 69. The vessel is owned by a Kodiak-based family partnership, with some of Helligso’s grandchildren working as his family’s fifth generation in the industry, he said.

“Weather was coming up, and they set and made a tow out and yeah — probably towed way too long, we definitely know that now,” he said. “But it was just kind of unlucky, luck of the draw.”

Bycatch in the central Gulf trawl fishery is managed under a complex federal framework in which only a portion of vessels have their salmon bycatch numbers independently verified.

Because both of the two vessels involved in Sunday’s incident had their counts verified, their numbers were extrapolated out to the unverified vessels, putting the whole fleet over its annual limit of 18,316 fish, said Josh Keaton, a top federal manager with the National Marine Fisheries Service.

That’s the first time the annual cap has been hit since it went into place in 2012, said Bonney.

The formal closure wasn’t issued until Wednesday morning, but the fleet stopped fishing in the meantime, knowing the cap was at risk of being exceeded, Keaton added.

“I do think it’s important to recognize that the fleet voluntarily stood down,” he said. “They care as much about these data as we did.”

Data from processing companies that covers the trawlers’ entire harvest, which hasn’t been independently verified, shows that the fleet’s total king salmon bycatch for the season is still under 13,000, according to Helligso.

But federal managers rely only on the verified data for their closure decision, according to Keaton of the National Marine Fisheries Service.

Next year, he added, new federal rules involving onboard video cameras should result in a much larger fraction of the fleet having its catch numbers independently verified.

Each of the salmon caught by the two vessels has also been genetically sampled, Keaton said.

The data that comes back could provide some new information to managers, he added — shedding light on whether the kings mixing with a single school of pollock come from a single population, or multiple areas.

In the meantime, fishermen and processing companies are still trying to sort out whether the Kodiak trawl fleet could move to other fisheries.

But amid an economic crisis in Alaska’s seafood industry, it’s not clear that fishing for other available species, like rockfish, will pencil out, said Bonney.

“I have a feeling there’s going to be some pretty hurting checkbooks here shortly,” she said.
