Does Vietnam have a coastal marina?

As of this writing, there is only one coastal marina open in Vietnam, the AnaMarina in Nha Trang. I visited there last week. It is open only as a private marina, accommodating small boats, catamarans, and super yachts. However, at the this time AnaMarina is open only to Vietnamese nationals. There is currently an application pending to include foreigners. The application is under review by the Vietnamese government. Approval is expected in 2023.

Does Danang have a marina?

Many have asked about the Danang , or DHC Marina. The name is misleading, because it’s not a real port, but rather a tourist attraction including a restaurant on the Han River. Shaped like a boat, it is a landmark close to the Dragon Bridge in downtown Danang.

The planned marina in Danang for mooring boats is further up the river, and is currently on hold. Some buildings have already been constructed, however there seems to be a problem with obtaining needed environmental permits. At this point, there is only a website, and the above-mentioned buildings, but further construction is on hold. Hopefully that will change soon.

What Choose

Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Vietnam

At Yachting.Rent, we provide an extensive fleet of both sailing boats and catamarans, letting you choose the ideal vessel for your seafaring adventure in Vietnam.

Sailing boats provide a traditional and immersive way to experience the Vietnamese coastline. With their deep hulls, sailing boats are highly seaworthy and offer excellent performance, particularly when cruising in open waters. The cozy and compact interior of a sailing boat allows for a more intimate setting, ideal for solo travelers, couples, or small families who want to feel connected with the sea and enjoy a classic sailing experience.

On the other hand, catamarans, with their dual-hull design, offer stability, space, and speed. Their design makes them less prone to rocking, ensuring a smooth journey – a feature especially appreciated by those who may be new to sailing or prone to seasickness. Catamarans often come with larger living spaces, both indoor and outdoor, making them perfect for larger groups or families who desire comfort and room to socialize. The shallow draft of a catamaran allows closer access to beaches and coves, making it an excellent choice for those wanting to explore Vietnam’s hidden bays and untouched islands.

Whichever vessel you choose, Yachting.Rent guarantees top-tier boats that are meticulously maintained and fully equipped with modern amenities. Our skilled crew are ready to guide and assist, ensuring you have a memorable and safe journey along the breathtaking Vietnamese coast. Let us assist you in choosing the perfect vessel for your adventure, be it a traditional sailing boat or a spacious catamaran, and immerse yourself in the captivating beauty of Vietnam’s seascapes.

Charting their own course

In small villages along coastal Vietnam, basket boats were born out of financial necessity but have come to represent independence.

The basket boats that dot the waters from the southern coast all the way up to Danang have become iconic to Vietnam. The origin of these coracles is unclear, but many believe they were born out of ingenuity during the French colonial era. As the story goes, when the French levied taxes on boats in Vietnam, fishermen couldn’t afford to pay them – so they designed circular woven “baskets” that just so happened to also function as boats. The basket boats quickly became popular up and down the coast thanks to both their tax-free status and their impressive engineering.

sailboat in vietnamese

Making each basket boat (called “thung chai” or “thuyen thung”) was a meticulous process that required special skills. It took a specialized artisan several days to make a boat by hand. To start, he would gather young bamboo (used because bamboo is buoyant and flexible). After sun-drying the bamboo pieces, he would then whittle them down to an exact size before weaving them together by hand. Once the basket frame was done, the artisan would cover it with resin or tar. In some instances, he might use a layer of cow dung mixture along the bottom of the boat to fully waterproof it. For the final step, the boat is covered in a layer of sap from a local tree before being left out in the sun to dry.

sailboat in vietnamese

Generations of fishermen have been using basket boats thanks to their superior engineering. The round shape of the boats and their lightweight materials help them move naturally with the sea. While other boats cut through the water, basket boats stay above the waves and rarely overturn. This means fishermen can fish closer to shore in basket boats than in other vessels. Basket boats can be pushed straight into the ocean from the beach, whereas heavy long tail boats generally have to enter the water through a river.

Learning how to maneuver a basket boat properly takes time. Unlike other boats, their round shape causes them to spin in circles. Traditionally, fishermen controlled the boats by waving an oar back and forth in an arc-like motion.

sailboat in vietnamese

Basket boats are an important part of communities in coastal Vietnam. They operate as lifeboats during emergencies at sea. The boats frequently double as lightweight transportation for cargo or people. Basket boat races are popular components of local village festivals.

While there are still traditional basket boat weavers, many fishermen have updated their vessels. Modern versions of basket boats use fiberglass, canvas and composite. Many have sails or engines to help them travel further offshore.

sailboat in vietnamese

Much as they were back when they were created, basket boats today are a symbol of independence. Modern fishermen often have to work on large fishing vessels that take them away from their families for weeks at a time. Owning a basket boat allows them to operate independently and to make their own living. In many cases, thanks in part to basket boats, fishing has become a family business that will continue to be passed down through future generations.

Guide to Vietnam

Innocent charm, exquisite food and beautiful coastline

Vietnam’s intoxicating allure stems from its deep sense of soul amongst rich cultural traditions and varied landscapes. Its mesh of colourful cities full of bicycle-packed streets and faded colonial grandeur are infused with ancient hill tribe communities, World Heritage coastal gems and lands steeped in history.

Curving along the east coast of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam stretches for over 1600 kilometres comprising endless paddy fields, glorious beaches and breath-taking coastline. Dotted between the patchwork of spectacular landscapes and languid countryside are a number of enthralling cities, the most modern of which is Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City). Its scooter-strewn streets swarm with people beneath the high-rise buildings, colourful markets and modern shopping centres. Explore the labyrinth Cu Chi Tunnels that were once a haven for Viet Cong fighters before revelling in the vibrant nightlife until the early hours.

The larger, greener city of Hanoi embodies a harmonious fusion of old and new, from lakes, temples and terraces to smart restaurants and chic boutiques. The city makes an excellent base from which to explore the dazzling natural wonder, Halong Bay. Dotted with over 3000 limestone islands rising up from the Gulf of Tonkin, the UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a slice of truly authentic Vietnam.

The fantastic sailing conditions and beautiful off lying islands of Nha Trang are an unmissable part of any yacht charter itinerary in this region. Spend a day enjoying vibrant street markets and seeing magnificent ancient monuments before casting off to the Khanh Hoa province; a stretch of dazzling coastline with spectacular beaches and deep lagoons.

Immerse yourself in old Vietnam in the elegant riverside town of Hoi An, dotted with temples, shrines and beautiful Chinese-style wooden houses amongst traditional restaurants and pretty shop fronts. Have a suit made to measure in one of the traditional tailors and enjoy a stroll through the cobbled streets lined with galleries and cafés. Within easy reach of the town lies the paradise of Lao Cham, a group of eight islands boasting secluded bays and beautiful beaches, ideal for snorkelling in the balmy waters and soaking up the sun with a cocktail.

As a multi-centre luxury yacht charter destination, Vietnam is hard to beat. Whether cruising down the Mekong Delta past mangroves, relaxing on enchanting beach resorts such as Ninh Van Bay, or snorkelling and diving in the renowned dive sites of the Con Dao Islands archipelago, Vietnam is the personification of understated luxury.

What Are the Round Basket Boats You See In Vietnam?

Written By:

Post Date – Updated:

Travelers to the central coast of Vietnam in places like Hoi An, Danang, or Quy Nhon may find the coastline scattered with these strange-looking round woven basket boots or coracles. Whenever I travel to Quy Nhon, Vietnam, we see the woven basket boats lined up on the beach, ready to go out for the next day’s fishing catch in the evenings.

The round basket boats, or coracles as they are called, are handwoven boats along the central coast of Vietnam. The boat is woven from very young bamboo and then covered in tar or resin to waterproof the boat. It can take a skilled artisan several days to make one of these round basket boats. The boats were initially designed to avoid the tax the French placed on all boats. Today, fishermen along the coast of Central Vietnam still use these boats.

Table of Contents

Vietnamese round woven basket boat history, listen to our podcast on vietnam’s round basket boats, riding the wave with the round basket boats., vietnamese woven basket boats today., frequently asked questions, 14 things to understand the vietnamese culture, is the vietnamese water puppet show worth seeing, is vietnam really safe to travel alone.

But this is not just any ordinary boat; this round weave basket boat has a history that goes back to the French Colonial era. Because of this, today’s boat continues to symbolize something more than a round-basket boat.

Here are some insights about this Vietnamese coracle or the Vietnamese round fishing boat:

The story goes that the French taxed all boats during the Colonial era. Many fishermen could not afford this tax, so being ingenious, they decided to find a way around the new place boat tax.

The Vietnamese round woven basket boat was born out of economic necessity. The fishermen needed to find a boat that would not only be cheap enough so that they could afford it, but it also had to be able to avoid the additional tax that was placed on other boats.

This boat also had to have some essential qualities, such as it had to be able to hold the fish or the day’s catch. It had to withstand the ocean waves, which often can be very fierce on the Vietnamese coastlines, and it had to be waterproof so as not to sink.

The Vietnamese round-weaved basket boat proved to be the perfect solution to all these problems. Not only could it avoid the tax on all boats, but it could also handle the waves, hold the fishermen’s daily catch, and withstand some of the fierce Vietnamese coastal weather.

I am sure that when this boat was first invented or thought of, many probably doubted if this little woven basket boat would be successful. But this little Vietnamese woven basket boat has undoubtedly proved itself through the test of time. This boat has been able to do everything it set out to do, plus, as time has shown, much more.

Basket Boats on the beach

Making of the round woven basket boats

Not everyone or every artisan is capable or skilled enough to weave one of these basket boats. Making a round woven basket boat requires artisans with specific weaving skills. One of these highly skilled weavers can take several days to make one boat.

The artisan must first gather or find very young bamboo. Bamboo is used because it is readily available and has some inherent buoyancy qualities. At the same time as being buoyant, bamboo is also flexible enough to be woven.

Each bamboo piece must be cut and then dried out in the sun. Once the pieces are ready to be woven, the boat’s frame is built, and the weaving process can begin.

It is not easy to weave the boat. Though they are flexible, the pieces of bamboo are also larger than weaving a basket or other woven products. This is also why a particular skill is needed to weave these large bamboo pieces onto this woven basket boat.

Today, once the boats are woven, tar or resin is usually placed on them to make them waterproof. In the past, they would use a kind of clay out of cow dung to put on the boats and waterproof them.

Fisherman's Basket boat

When you see the fishermen out on the ocean in their round woven basket boats, one of the first things you notice is that they cannot only go in a straight line, but they are always riding upon the waves and not cutting through the waves as a regular boat would with a bow. So it can be said this round boat will ride the waves and not cut through them.

Learning to steer one of these boats without spinning around in circles requires training and skill. Fishermen paddle the oar in an arc-like motion so the boat will go straight and not just spin in circles.

One of the most amazing things about these boats is that they can gracefully glide entirely in the water at an outstanding speed. I have also seen many fishermen standing in the boat with a dog next to them, paddling their way out to sea.

Today, many of the fishermen still use the woven basket boat. When visiting the central coast in Vietnam, you can also see brightly painted. Today the fishermen may even place a motor on these boats to take them further distances out to sea, even as far as 5 kilometers out to the main fishing vessel.

A fisherman told me they could carry a substantial part of their entire day’s load of fish in one of these round basket boats. For this reason, many of them will not give up their round woven fishing boats.

Even though there is no longer a Colonial French tax on the boats, they could indeed find another boat to use; however, the fishermen still depend upon these little round-weaved fishing boats and consider them an essential part of their daily fishing operations.

Painted round woven basket boat Quy Nhon, Vietnam

These Vietnamese round woven basket boats or coracles that dot the coastlines of central Vietnam have become an essential part of the Vietnamese fishing culture. These little round woven basket boats have proven to be an invention that has withstood the test of time and modernization.

What are Vietnamese round boats?

Vietnamese round boats, also known as coracles, are unique, handwoven boats found along the central coast of Vietnam. They are made from young bamboo and waterproofed with tar or resin.

Why were the Vietnamese round boats created?

These boats originated during the French Colonial era as a response to taxes imposed on boats. Vietnamese fishermen designed these to avoid the tax, making them affordable and efficient for their needs.

How are the Vietnamese Round Boats made?

Skilled artisans craft these boats by weaving young bamboo pieces that are cut, dried, and then woven around a frame. The finished boats are coated with tar or resin for waterproofing.

How do fishermen steer these round boats?

Steering requires skill and training. Fishermen use an oar in a specific arc-like motion to prevent the boat from spinning and to move it in a straight line.

Can the Vietnamese round boats handle rough waters?

Yes, these boats are designed to withstand the fierce waves often found on the Vietnamese coast. They are also capable of carrying a substantial load, such as a day’s catch of fish.

Are these Vietnamese round boats used for anything besides fishing?

Apart from fishing, these boats are also used in festivals and contests among fishermen. Some are even used as shops on rivers, supplying food to fishermen.

What is the history of these Vietnamese Round boats?

The Vietnamese round basket boat has a long history and symbolizes ingenuity and resilience. Initially created to circumvent a tax, they have now become a significant part of Vietnamese fishing culture.

How long do these Vietnamese round boats last?

With regular re-coating, these bamboo boats can last for decades, thanks to the durability of bamboo and the waterproof coatings applied to them.

Two vietnamese climbers rescued on the matterhorn.

HÀ NỘI Two Vietnamese mountaineers stranded and in distress, in challenging weather conditions, on a famed peak in the Alps have been rescued.

Air Zermatt, a Swiss helicopter service provider, announced on its homepage on September 24 that its rescue team had successfully brought two Vietnamese climbers stranded on the Matterhorn down to safety.

According to the announcement, rescuers in Zermatt received an emergency call that two climbers from Vietnam were in distress on the Matterhorn on Monday morning, shortly after 7am. The weather at that time was so bad that a rescue by air or by foot was not possible.

At 1pm, three rescue specialists from the Zermatt rescue station decided to climb the Matterhorn on foot to reach the accident site. Zermatt Bergbahnen was able to transport the rescuers to Schwarzsee, from where they continued their journey on foot in harsh conditions. At an altitude of over 3500 metres, the rescue specialists found the two climbers in distress.

The Vietnamese climbers were trapped in difficult terrain below the normal route. Inadequately equipped with light shoes and thin sweatpants, they were also severely hypothermic.

Due to the adverse weather conditions, the climbers could not be airlifted out of the Matterhorn wall at that time. The rescue specialists had to rappel down to the stranded climbers and then pull them back up to the normal route using a rope system, Air Zermatt wrote on their homepage.

The announcement also noted that the fresh snow and ice posed a significant challenge for the rescuers. Upon reaching the winter shelter at the Hörnli Hut, the rescuers and the climbers in distress were able to take refuge.

Meanwhile, Air Zermatt was on standby with a helicopter, ready to evacuate the climbers if there was a break in the weather.

At 2am, the helicopter crew took off towards the Matterhorn and, in two flights, was able to bring both the climbers and the rescuers to safety. The rescue of the two Vietnamese mountaineers ultimately lasted 14 hours.

The rescue was operated under extremely challenging conditions and lasts 14 hours. Photo air-zermatt.ch

“The rescuers operated under extremely challenging conditions. Without their efforts, the two Vietnamese climbers would likely not have survived the harsh conditions and would have succumbed to the cold. After a medical examination by the Air Zermatt doctor, the two exhausted climbers returned home,” Air Zermatt wrote.
