Sail the Outer Banks with us on our 41 ft Gulfstar!  We sail from the downtown Manteo Waterfront located on Roanoke Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Our sail charters are sunset cruises and are available for 2-1/2 hours, with glorious sunsets over the water as we return to the Manteo Waterfront!    Enjoy a private sail charter with us, up to 6 guests,  sailing on the Roanoke and Albemarle Sounds.

And yes, a private sail charter means just that, it will be just you and your family/friends, we do not put other people on board 'to fill the boat up".  It's your cruise, your boat!  Feel free to roam about the boat while we are underway, we have found that couples really enjoy sitting on the foredeck under the genoa (forward sail), with only the sound of the breeze through the sails and the splash of water on the bow.

If you have interest in sailing the boat we enjoy letting people have a turn at the helm, adjusting lines, learning how to work the chart plotter and radar. Feel free to bring your own food and drinks, people usually will bring a cooler with them.  We are pet friendly! Sunset Sails return back to the Manteo Waterfront right at sunset, rates are $100 per person ($350 minimum) up to 6 guests. Call (252) 473-2719 for reservations. Our Outer Banks Cruises leave the Manteo Waterfront Marina, our slip is at the end of Budleigh St, behind Poor Richard's Restaurant and the Tranquil House Hotel ( see photos at right).

Let's go sailing!

If you schedule and the weather is iffy, we will call that day to confirm, no charge for cancelling due to weather.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gratuity included in my charter fee.

Gratuity is not included in your charter fee. Customary gratuity is 15%.

Where do I meet the boat for boarding and do we get off at the same place?

Can I bring more than 6 total guests?

Each boat can only take up to 6 guests. If you have a larger group, book a flotilla. We can accommodate up to 12 guests with a Flotilla Sail, where we sail two identical boats together. Such a fun experience, many options for extra fun with two boats. Check out our flotilla sailing .

  • Click here to book our second boat: https://stiletto-classic-catamarans.com/
  • Click here to learn more about multiple boat charters: https://phillipsboatworks.com/charters/adding-a-second-stiletto-27-to-our-outer-banks-sailing-fleet/

When should I arrive at the dock?

Please arrive just a few minutes before your charter begins. You will find the start time of your charter on your receipt. Often, particularly in the heat of the summer season, our skippers are often taking a water break and will arrive just a few minutes before your charter. It only takes a couple minutes to board and shove off.

Where do we meet the boat and captain?

Most of our charters leave from the Buxton Harbor Hatteras Sailing Center at 48962 NC-12, Hatteras, NC 27953 . However, sometimes due to the weather we may depart from other locations. Your skipper will be in touch with you before your charter if there is any weather related start location change. Note: Our boat shop and sail repair are in a different location, but we are usually around 😉

Can children come on the boat?

Of course. We love kids, and have 3 of our own. Please bring your own lifejackets for children. Safety is so important to little ones, and according to the US Coast Guard regulations they are required to wear a life jacket at all times on the boat. The life vest should be comfortable enough that they will wear it and fit them appropriately.

Can I bring a cooler and drinks?

Please bring water and drinks. Alcoholic beverages are allowed, but your captain reserves the right to stop serving if a guest becomes a danger or annoyance to the other guests.

Please do not bring a cooler. We have a cooler and ice is provided. Whether you are an adult or a child, it is a good idea to bring along a lidded cup to prevent messy spills.

If you are on a private charter, you may bring food of whatever sort you like. If you are on a shared charter feel free to bring “neat” snacks.

What do I need to bring with me on my charter?

  • Hats, sunglasses, drinks, water shoes or boat safe shoes
  • Dress in layers for morning and evening charters. Early mornings and evenings can be chilly with the breeze particularly if you are wet from swimming.
  • Sunblock and a hat are essential even on cloudy days
  • Camera, phone, waterproof protection for your devices
  • Please wear boat safe shoes or plan to stay barefoot. You may not wear street shoes on the boat.
  • If you are susceptible to seasickness, plan to take motion sickness medication before your trip.

Our captains use text messages to communicate with you regarding your charter reservation. We require that you provide a valid mobile phone through which we can communicate weather changes, safety information, etc. Please opt -in and provide a valid phone number for communication. We will not use this for marketing purposes.

Your Phone (for Text Notifications)

I agree to receive text message notifications regarding my charter reservations. I have read and agree to the terms of charter service.

Advance Reservations

You may book a charter up to 12 weeks in advance.

If you reserve your charter more than 3 days in advance, our system prompts you to pay a set reservation fee which reserves the charter for your party. Three days prior to our sail, the final balance becomes due. You will receive an invoice with a link which you can click to pay the final charter fee.

If you book within 3 days of your charter, a full charter fee is required upon reservation.

Weather Policy

We sail in 0-20 knots, and light, spotted showers. We do not sail over 25knots or when it is lightening. While this is our general guideline, all charters are held at the captain’s discretion and he considers all factors.

If the charter you have reserved is cancelled due to inclement weather, we will do our best to reschedule your sail during your stay here on the Outer Banks. If for some reason, we cannot agree a time to make up the charter, we will refund your charter fee less the credit card transaction fees (~3.5%).

Beverage Policy

We provide a cooler with ice. You may bring alcoholic beverages on board. We reserve the right to terminate your charter with no refund if members of your party become unsafe due to excessive alcohol consumption. Underage members of your party may not drink while on board the sailboat.

Private Bookings Only

Due to current Covid-19, we do not offer per person charters at this time.

Lifejackets

Children are very welcome aboard, but per the coast guard children under 12 must be in a life jacket while on board the sailboat. You must bring an appropriately sized life jacket for each child. We do not have the boat equipped with child sized life jackets.

The boat is stocked with coast guard required adult lifejackets. The adult life jackets we supply are not particularly comfortable to wear. If you feel you need to wear a lifejacket while on board, please bring one that is comfortable for wearing.

Outer Banks Boat Cruises

What’s a trip to the Outer Banks without some time spent on or in the ocean or sound? Outer Banks boat cruises give you a way to explore the beach from a watery view. Boat cruises can vary between a tour, a charter boat at your command for a day, taking a ride at a marina, a sailing lesson or a quick cruise around the coast as you watch the sun set. Depending on how much time you have, boat cruise lengths might be half an hour or a day-long event. On Outer Banks boat tours, you might have the opportunity to search for dolphin frolicking through the waves, watch the sunset at the close of a perfect day or just zip around the coast where you can view the rugged shoreline. Ships’ individual captains and mates, who will take you on idyllic trips where you can lounge in style on the boat, lead Outer Banks charter fishing trips. Whichever way you choose to experience Outer Banks cruises, our listing below can help you find the best activity to suit your plans.

Captain Johnny’s Dolphin Tours

It’s very exciting to watch bottlenosed dolphins frolicking and rolling through the water. Dolphins live in the sounds and from June through October frequent the local waters. Capt. Stuart Wescott, a ninth-generation Roanoke Island native, has been conducting dolphin watch tours in the Roanoke Sound aboard the 53-foot pontoon-type boat Capt. Johnny for more than 25 years. If you miss the dolphins on your first trip, Capt. Wescott gives you a second tour for free. He shares his knowledge and history of the area on the tour as well. Dolphin tours last two hours, and there are several trips a day (morning, mid-day and sunset). Tours range in price from $10 to $35; call for details. Sunset cruises, bird-watching tours and shrimping/crabbing cruises are also offered. Stop by the dock site on the Manteo waterfront or call for more information on this very popular Outer Banks activity. Note that these tours run only Monday through Friday, though charters are also available on Saturdays and Sundays.

When you say “Outer Banks,” you’ve said water. Such is life on a chain of barrier islands. The water supports many life forms in our sounds, estuaries, creeks, inlets and ocean, and Outer Banks water tours are a great way to get to the middle of the action. You’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for life both above and beneath the surface of the water with water tours and activities. Check out a dolphin watching tour or try your hand at a sailing excursion for a few things to do on the OBX. Hundreds of migratory bird paths also take place over the OBX, so be prepared for your “water tour” to have you looking in more directions than just one. Being on the water is relaxing, but it’s also totally invigorating. Try it, you’ll like it!

The Outer Banks of North Carolina is a sport fisherman’s paradise. The sheer quantity of angling opportunities makes our waters some of the best in the world. Check out fishing opportunities for the whole family, whether that's inshore along the beach, casting a line from our piers, taking a charter to the sound, or booking a half day trip offshore.

2 more Outer Banks homes collapse into ocean

Debris from collapsed house

Outer Banks house collapse Two homes in the Outer Banks of North Carolina collapsed into the ocean recently. (Cape Hatteras National /National Park Service)

RODANTHE, N.C. — Two homes that had been on the waterfront are no longer after they collapsed into the ocean.

The two latest homes in the Outer Banks to succumb to Mother Nature collapsed the same day, just hours apart and were the third and fourth homes to collapse this year.

The first home, which was unoccupied, collapsed early Friday morning. The second collapsed after 9 p.m. on Friday, USA Today reported. That house was also unoccupied but was damaged when the first house came down.

The debris from the homes was carried several miles from where they once stood, The New York Times reported.

“Seashore law enforcement rangers arrived on scene and confirmed that the unoccupied, one-story house—the same house that sustained damages as a result of the first house collapse of the day—had collapsed and apparently washed out into the ocean before the bulk of it returned to the beach at the south end of G A Kohler Court,”

Over the past four years there have been nine house collapses, the National Park Service said . One house collapsed last month, possibly due to waves produced by Hurricane Ernesto despite being hundreds of miles from the Outer Banks, the Times reported.

Waves, wind, tides and rising sea levels have all contributed to coastal erosion and have threatened homes in Rodanthe and Buxton, North Carolina, the newspaper said. Sand dunes and dry sand once surrounded the homes that were built on stilts and that are now close to the water’s edge.

4 migrants died trying to reach an eastern Greek island in a small boat that sank

ATHENS, Greece — (AP) — A small boat carrying migrants from nearby Turkey sank Monday in wind-tossed waters in the eastern Aegean Sea just off the island of Samos , killing at least four people, Greek authorities said.

The bodies of three women and a girl were found in the water. The coast guard said five others were rescued from the sea, and another 26 who safely made it to shore were later found on land.

A large search and rescue operation by air, land and sea remained in effect because survivors said it was possible one or two people might still be missing.

Authorities were initially alerted by a local resident who heard screams and cries for help from the sea, local officials said.

It wasn't immediately known how the boat, believed to have been a small dinghy, sank, and there was no immediate information on the identities or nationalities of the survivors and the dead.

Sonia Balleron, the head of the Greece mission for the international medical charity Doctors Without Borders, said the group was "shocked and outraged" by the sinking and was providing emergency support to the survivors.

“These deaths are the tragic consequence of inhumane migration policies,” Balleron said in a statement. Human rights groups accuse European authorities of failing to provide legal migration paths for people seeking a better life on the continent.

Greece lies along one of the most popular routes into the European Union for people fleeing conflict and poverty in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Despite a crackdown by Greek authorities along the land and sea border with Turkey, thousands of people make it across, often from the Turkish coast to Greek islands using flimsy inflatable dinghies.

In recent months, smugglers have also increasingly turned to ferrying migrants in powerful speedboats .
