Tip-top: Summit's stylish outdoor superyacht furniture
Since it was founded in 1979, Monterey-based manufacturer Summit has become the go-to choice for hotels, restaurants, villas, private clubs and, of course, superyacht owners looking for elegant, handcrafted teak furniture. Under president and owner Jane Sieberts, Summit’s offering includes almost every piece of exterior furniture imaginable, from bar chairs to dining tables, footrests to sofas, plus everything in between, with all of its signature wood sourced from sustainable plantations.
Collaborating with some of the world’s most famous designers, including British brand Linley, yacht interior connoisseur John Munford and, most recently, the Los Angeles-based artist turned furniture designer Alwy Visschedyk on a range of 1960s-inspired pieces called LA Mod, Summit has a reputation for high quality pieces that are at the cutting edge of style.
While many of its pieces are undoubtedly mid-century in feel, the emphasis for Summit furniture is on functional, comfortable pieces that are both stylish and modern while being classic in design. All of its products are manufactured to meet marine requirements, and the recent launch of Summit Endurance Fabrics has extended this offering to include a selection of seaworthy upholstery fabrics, made of 100 per cent solution-dyed acrylic, which are both weatherproof and fade-proof.
The newest addition to the Summit Endurance collection comes from a collaboration with respected interior designer Nina Campbell, who brings her impeccable taste for prints to a range of textiles. After honing her craft as an assistant to John Fowler, of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, Campbell has gone on to build a name for herself as an eponymous brand, working with clients as esteemed as the Royal Albert Hall and the Savoy in London. Now the designer has teamed up with Summit to bring her signature style to its fabric collection for outdoor furniture, creating five vibrant, contemporary patterns that can be used on pillows, throws and upholstery for sofas, day beds and armchairs al fresco.
The new material is thoroughly durable and fade-proof, making it perfect for the wear and tear of sun, seawater, high humidity, wind and rain. It is also made from 100 per cent solution-dyed acrylic, so you can rest assured that it is of the highest quality. As Campbell explains: “The textures of these fabrics are exceptionally beautiful. Each pattern has its own luxurious feel that fits the design and also complements Summit’s furniture. All are 100 per cent woven, which makes them truly durable as well as stylish.”
Inspired by gardens and nature, and in particular organic elements such as minerals and gemstones, Campbell’s five new prints are: Shanghai Labyrinth, a riff on the classic garden trellis motif with a graphic, maze-like design; London Crosshatch, a weave that mimics a painted, textured wall; Bahama Basket, a traditional woven basket design; Havana Leaf, which recalls the lush foliage and exotic plants of the Cuban jungle; and finally, Madagascar Stripe, a striped design based on a favourite Panama hat with its basket weave.
The colour scheme is similarly taken from the outdoors, with tones of green, blue and orange; these include shades of coral, lapis, peridot, travertine and turquoise, bringing even greater vibrancy to these already vivid designs. As Campbell says of the collection: “I don’t want to fight with nature. What I want in a garden is to see the garden, or the rolling waves when I’m at sea. I like outdoor furniture that doesn’t shout at you.”

Meet 8 Designers That Are Creating Sleek, Weather-Proof Furniture for Your Yacht

When it comes to superyacht furniture, wear and tear from guest use is just one challenge to keeping everything in pristine condition. The harsh conditions of a marine environment, including the 3S’s (salt, sand, and sunlight) pose the biggest trials and tribulations to outdoor furniture, while the fourth S, sunscreen, can really mess up that beautiful designer lounge in the main salon.
The problem is so acute that a number of yacht designers have expanded their portfolios from designing hulls and interiors to creating furniture that will stand the tests of weather and guests. They are using special fabrics, sustainable materials, and creative weaves in custom furniture lines that dress up the beach clubs and salons, rather than making these social areas dowdy after a season. Others are focused on the interior with vibrant designs, unusual shapes, and heirloom-quality woods.
These eight furniture lines all sport unique designs—from stunning starburst tables to lounges that float—but all have the same goal: Letting everyone put their feet up and enjoy the furniture, without the owners having to wonder later how they’ll restore everything so it looks new again.
Oceana by Bannenberg & Rowell
British studio Bannenberg & Rowell’s spring 2023 collection of outdoor yacht furniture was developed in collaboration with Sutherland Furniture and named after the Jon Bannenberg-designed 180-foot yacht Oceana . Made from teak with stainless-steel accents, the 10-strong collection of seating and tables is built to withstand high seas. “The most obvious signature across the range is that combination of a tactile radial junction with a stainless-steel dowelled-mortice and tenon-style joint,” designer Simon Rowell tells Robb Report , who then translates: “This frame is designed to look simple but still took several years to develop with the Sutherland team to engineer it into a viable product range.” An exterior textile and rug range that complements the Oceana furniture is also available from Sutherland sister company Perennials.
Sea + Shore by Silverlining
Sea + Shore is the first collection of high-performance outdoor furniture from luxury interiors brand Silverlining. Following 18 months of in-depth research and development, the range comprises five tabletop designs available in more than 200 combinations. Inspired by marine patterns and textures, the finishes include hand-shaded wood marquetry, lacquer ombré patterns, intricate two-tone lacquer work, “intaglio” etched stainless steel, and sand-carved polished cast-art glass. “The collection has been designed in response to client requests to acquire exterior furniture with the same limitless creativity, innovative craftsmanship and exemplary service as Silverlining’s interior pieces,” Silverlining’s founder Mark Boddington says.
Arc by Winch Design
Winch Design’s debut collection with Summit Furniture, called Arc, is a contemporary beach club range made from teak and inspired by the sea and sky. Its signature feature is a laminated teak weave spun between brushed stainless-steel rods to create an arc that echoes the woven rope traditionally used on sailing yachts. The eight-piece range includes a lounge chair, a dining chair, a bar chair, a coffee table, a sun lounge, a bar cart, a dining table, and an occasional table, featuring fully customizable fabric. Every natural detail is brought forward, including the teak grain on top of the coffee tables, which are manipulated into leaf patterns.
IYC + Neal Jones Furniture
British brand Neal Jones Furniture specializes in the creation of fitted and freestanding custom and semi-custom furniture for superyachts and high-end residences. In 2023, IYC partnered with Neal Jones to provide a tailored design service for yacht owners looking to dress their new builds or refit projects with hand-crafted furniture built with the marine environment in mind, from bar stools and foot stools to daybeds and lounges. “Being that one-stop-shop for all yacht purchasers and having people with the expertise in every aspect of yachts is key to our business and delights our customers,” says IYC CEO Raphael Sauleau. “Having a company like Neal Jones Furniture allows us to give our customers all the options they need to fit their yacht in the very best furniture.”
The Nimbus Collection by Coast New Zealand
Suitable for a sun deck, beach set-up, or even on the water, the Nimbus Collection by superyacht supplier Coast New Zealand is comprised of inflatable furniture suited to multiple settings. The lounge, orbit, and chair are available in customizable colors and fabrics made by Sunbrella. But beyond the looks, they are designed to be comfortable, long lasting, portable, and convenient. The air-filled liners are manufactured using fabrics and technology traditionally used for paddle boards or tenders, such as marine grade reinforced PVC with heat sealed seams (rather than glue which melts in the sun.) Marine-grade stainless ‘D’ rings are included for securing the furniture to a deck. The furniture also comes with a USB rechargeable pump and a storage bag made from recycled sails.
The Lounge Collection by Eva Mechler
Award-winning furniture designer and Master Furniture Maker Eva Mechler specializes in made-to-order wooden furniture, hand-crafted at her workshop in northern Germany. The Lounge Collection is made using solid wood left over from the building of superyachts, including European native species of oak, chestnut, ash, and walnut. The first prototypes were made from a sustainable “modified wood” called Tesumo developed by Lürssen Yachts and Wolz Nautic. Conceived as an alternative to teak and selected by the owner of REV Ocean for use on the yacht’s exterior decking, Tesumo is strong, durable, and more resistant to weathering than other woods. Mechler’s collectible art-furniture earned her a place as a finalist for the Smart Yacht Award at the Monaco Smart Yacht Rendezvous in 2023.
Onde by Cristiano Gatto
Driven by a desire to create fully custom furniture that matches his boats, superyacht designer Cristiano Gatto has collated his debut furniture range, called Onde. The catch: It is only available to owners of a Gatto-designed yacht, such as Heesen’s Project Orion, which is due to deliver in 2026 and features Onde furniture on board. The 12-piece range features key items from past projects, each one taking up to six months to build. “I have clients who changed their loose exterior yacht furniture four times in the past six years because off-the-shelf ranges can’t withstand the harsh marine environment,” Gatto tells Robb Report . Made from wood, stainless steel, carbon fiber, and polymeric materials, the range includes tables, chairs, sunbeds, and the most difficult item to manufacture: the basic, unassuming ottoman.
Paola Lenti 2023 Collection
The new indoor and outdoor 2023 Collections from yachting furniture stalwart Paola Lenti was unveiled by the brand during Milan Design Week, hosted at its newly unveiled flagship store. The range is made from eco-friendly materials, such as 1,000-year-old river wood which has been preserved over time by gravel, sand, and clay. There are also outdoor textiles and fine yarns for the interior pieces, all made to be wear-resistant and recyclable.

Furniture Fit for a Superyacht
Posted June 16, 2020 in Lifestyle by Janine St.Denis
When it comes to outfitting new or existing superyachts, custom furniture plays an important role in creating an onboard look and feel that perfectly reflects the owner’s individual taste.
By commissioning bespoke pieces, it is possible for designers to realize the exact vision of a carefully thought-out design, while also making use of special pieces that are a joy to behold and use.
“Being ‘unique’ is an essential prerogative for the high-end market,” says the team at Italian company Paola Lenti, which specializes in creating furniture for relaxation spaces on yachts. “Especially in yachting, it is essential to be able to allow the customer the highest level of customization – we have always been able to achieve this thanks to a happy marriage between modern industrial techniques and the most exquisite Italian craftsmanship tradition.” Once the Paola Lenti team receives an initial design brief, they set to work creating marine-tailored pieces crafted from the highest quality materials. “The greatest challenge is certainly to produce modern pieces that are destined to last over time, respecting man and nature in the choice of materials and giving the products that artisan taste that makes them different from all,” they say. “This is all while maintaining quality necessary for a high level product conceived to be used in particular conditions such as those on yachts.”
For Summit Furniture, a typical scenario in a custom superyacht commission is that a client will want a bespoke version of one of their existing range, although one-off pieces are often produced too. The conversation will usually begin with a designer approaching the Summit team with a particular scheme they want to be executed. “Custom commissions mean that you can create something that fits a precise brief, purpose or function and the aesthetic of the client/designer,” says Hilary Gustafsson, Managing Director of Summit Furniture. “When it comes to the actual piece and finish of custom commissions, we tend to push the envelope from what is standard – we can easily accommodate that kind of bespoke request.” Communication during the creation process is an important part of getting custom commissions right. “The biggest challenge of a bespoke piece is meeting the precise visions and expectations of the client and it’s all about being clear about what will be delivered, especially when you are working with natural materials,” says Gustafsson. “At these levels, you look for perfection and our quality levels are very high which is why we are popular with superyacht clients.”
The commissioning of custom furniture often has the added bonus of being a very enjoyable and personal part of the superyacht ownership process that clients can be highly involved in. “Bespoke furniture is about the realization of a dream,” says Mark Boddington, Founder and CEO of Silver Lining Furniture, which has worked with more than 70 yachts of over 180 feet (55 meters) in the past 30 years. “Clients today want an experience in building a yacht, not just an acquisition – they enjoy the interaction, playing their part in the creation process that they can share with family and friends.
Once the team at Silver Lining has established a brief from the owners and gained insight into their particular vision for their yacht, they set to work on an interactive creative process. “We will begin a journey of discovery, to inspire and show what’s possible – in design creativity, in advancing craftsmanship and traditional and advanced materials,” says Boddington. “We start with a General Arrangement, identify key pieces to the owner and their family, such as a desk, a dressing table, main dining table, etc. Depending on the project we can work on a single design or in some cases over 40 pieces of furniture and wall art pieces.”
Many pieces of custom superyacht furniture are the epitome of form meeting function – workable yet stunning to look at. Fletcher Tables have produced their unique expanding Fletcher Capstan tables for a number of superyachts including Northrop & Johnson charter yachts Baton Rouge , Encore and Ilona . The tables are made from the world’s finest hardwoods and can be expanded as needed in a mesmerizingly fluid way.
“Our tables are particularly difficult to manufacture, as they are a fusion of precision engineering and exquisite furniture making,” says Nicholas Fletcher, Managing Director of Fletcher Burwell-Taylor. “When a client is commissioning a superyacht they are looking to create something unique, exciting and beautiful and the furniture and fittings have to be of the highest quality in the making and finishing.” Because of the nature of these kinds of products, exclusivity is part of the appeal. “We are very low volume and produce something that is both unique and superb quality, hence we get to work on some of the most exclusive yachts and houses.” Above all, attention to detail is crucial. “The key thing for superyacht custom furniture is to consider every single little detail and I personally scrutinize and check every component of the table, even if it is never seen and hidden in the mechanism,” says Fletcher. “Everything has to be perfect and live up to the client’s expectations.”
One obstacle faced by many manufacturers of custom superyacht furniture is the setting in which their pieces will be used, and subsequently, it is important to tailor pieces to the unique marine environment that yachts operate in. Challenges might include humidity, fluctuating temperatures, salt air, high UV levels, weight considerations and the ability to relocate pieces around the yacht if required. “Our sundeck collection has been tailored to superyacht use and the related practical implications and everything can be easily moved around and is foldable/stackable,” says Gustafsson. “It is important to design while keeping the functionality of a yacht in mind.”
Many designers of custom furniture are also noting changes to the way clients use their yachts, and this has had an influence on the pieces being produced. “Yachts are becoming much more informal, rather than boardrooms at sea, and are homes to explore the wonders of the world; increasingly they are styled as understated rather than overstated – subtle rather than bling,” says Boddington. “Many superyacht owners are also now very aware of the environment and of a sustainable and ethical supply chain and wanting to make a difference. “ The briefs reflect that owners are looking for pieces that require minimal maintenance and are made from natural products.”
With so much scope to create something that is truly personal, custom superyacht furniture is as unique as the yachts they live on. There is no doubt that the creative process and investment that goes into these pieces is well worth the end result.

Eco-Friendly Yacht Furniture
- By Kim Kavin
- November 22, 2023
Michael Noah was on vacation in Greece, trying to relax, when he realized the thermometer had hit 114 degrees Fahrenheit. The heat wave was part of the hottest month ever recorded on Earth.
“My children are now 13 and 15, and I want there to be a world for them,” he says. “Something has to give.”
As the project lead for furniture and product design at Winch Design, he’s in a position to help be the kind of change he wants to see. The company has been working with Summit Furniture on an updated line of furniture called Arc in Colour that’s built of sustainable, plantation-grown teak, along with fabrics made from recycled fishing nets and textile waste.
“We want to make a market for this,” he says. “People are a bit more conscious about sustainability.”
The idea is not so much to make furniture that looks like it came from recycled and sustainable materials, but instead to make furniture that looks luxurious while being crafted in a way that’s better for the planet. As of early August, Noah and his team were working with Summit to perfect the materials used to make the lounge chair, with plans to expand the Arc in Colour line into bar chairs, dining chairs and the modular-type sofas seen above. They’re still working on pricing, but Noah says it will not be a custom line. Instead, the idea is to make it accessible for lots of clients—since more and more yacht owners are making verified sustainable materials part of their project briefs.
“Before, it wasn’t in the forefront of their mind, but now it is,” he says. “We have a boat in London we’re delivering fairly soon, and the client is super involved. He wants to make sure everything is checked.”

Winch Design and Summit Furniture have come together to create Arc, their debut exterior furniture collaboration. Arc is a contemporary, beach club inspired collection perfect for yacht, residential and commercial settings. A signature feature of the range is laminated teak, which is woven between maritime-grade brushed stainless steel rods, alternatively undulating, they arc around the back of the seats in gentle rows. The name ‘Arc’ is visually evocative and brings to mind the long arcing lines of latitude and longitude, the curve of the horizon, of a full sail, and of the shapes in the sky made by sailors when navigating by the stars using the arc of the marine sextant.

Arc by Winch Design for Summit furniture was exhibited throughout The Monaco Yacht Show 2019 on the Summit Furniture stand and was celebrated with a drinks party on the Thursday evening. Guests were able to experience this beautiful, beach club inspired collection in all its contemporary glory.

Maintenance and Care
Summit furniture is made of the finest plantation-grown teak available. To keep your Summit furniture looking its best, we suggest the following easy care guidelines:
NATURAL TEAK
Regular Cleaning: Your teak, over time, will turn from its original golden brown color to a silvery gray patina. During this transition period, you may notice a “moiré” effect caused by the oils in the wood coming to the surface and mixing with moisture in the air. This is a normal stage the teak goes through as it starts to weather and can easily be washed off with soapy water. Your teak, as with anything left outdoors, will be subject to airborne impurities such as pollen and dirt. Frequent hosing off of your furniture will help it stay clean and weather evenly. Teak loves water!
Deep Cleaning: Your furniture should receive a more thorough cleaning periodically. Use a medium stiff bristle brush and soapy water or teak cleaner. A gentle powerwash is effective as well.
Sanding: Any roughness or surface abrasions can be removed by light sanding. We recommend 100-400 grit sandpaper.
