186 foot yacht

186-foot Alloy sailing yacht Mondango 3

Alloy Yachts tweeted this photo of the 186-foot Mondango 3 being moved out of the building shed ahead of her official launch into New Zealand’s Auckland Viaduct Harbor. We’re among the excited masses cheering the builder on, since the previous Mondango was such a stunner.

The existing Mondango , a 170-footer also from Alloy, has earned a fantastic reputation on the charter market since launching in 2008, thanks in part to her brilliant interior décor that includes a floating wall of artwork in the main salon. Her weekly base rate is about $246,000 at the current conversion rate from euros, making her one of the premier sailing yachts for charter worldwide.

We hear that the owners have put all of that experience and more into the making of Mondango 3 , which is rumored to feature a spa pool on the aft deck along with a Reymond Langton interior, just as with the previous yacht. Also returning on this project is Dubois for naval architecture, and the yacht will have a swing lift centerboard to reduce draft in shallower waters.

Stay tuned for more details, or head over to www.alloyyachts.co.nz to take a look at the handful of specs that have been released thus far.

186 foot yacht

The 186-foot, Alloy Yachts –built ketch Mondango3 , which was delivered to its owner in February, is currently available for charter through its central broker, Burgess Yachts. From now until the end of September, the yacht will cruise the South Pacific exploring the islands and atolls of French Polynesia and Fiji, including Bora Bora, Rangiroa, and Taha’a, as well as the Yasawa and Mamanuca island chains. Mondango 3 is particularly well equipped for its island-hopping itinerary thanks to a swinging keel that, once retracted into the hull of the ship, gives it a shallow 13-foot draft—allowing the yacht to anchor in ports and coves that would be inaccessible to most others of its size.

When not enjoying hidden beaches or exploring untouched islands, guests aboard Mondango3 are treated to Reymond Langton–designed interior spaces that feature cream-colored fabrics and bleached oak accented with dark ziracote furniture. The main deck’s saloon is separated from the dining area by a large leather panel that houses a massive 103-inch television. The yacht accommodates as many as 11 guests in its five lower-deck staterooms, including a full-beam master suite positioned amidships. On deck, guests can dine alfresco on the flybridge or relax in the hot tub on the aft main deck. A host of toys and tenders are found in the yacht’s foredeck garage, including two Smuggler tenders, wakeboards, water skis, stand-up paddleboards, snorkeling equipment, and an assortment of towables.

Following its inaugural charter season, Mondango3 will travel to the Andaman Sea in the Indian Ocean for winter, visiting Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia along the way. Next year, after spending the month of March in the Maldives, it will head back to Singapore and then visit Hong Kong and Japan on its way to Hawaii and Vancouver. Next summer, the yacht will visit Alaska and then travel down the West Coast of North America to Costa Rica before taking the Panama canal to the Caribbean for the 2015 winter charter season.

Mondango3 can be chartered for a weekly base rate that ranges from approximately $267,000 to $305,000, depending on season. (310.424.5112, www.burgessyachts.com )

Bad Girl has been inactive for about 6 years, two years in Mobile, Alabama and four years in Cap Cana, Dominica Republic, all the while being maintained by a small crew. The estate has been settled and Bad Girl is ready to be sold.

ABS layup surveys were completed as required by ABS, the most recent was in June of 2021. An insurance survey was completed in 2019 and a bottom survey was completed in June of 2021.

The entire AC system was rebuilt in 2021. The engines were recently surveyed by an MTU technician. All recommended services are being scheduled. The Harmon waste system has had major upgrades in 2021.

The amazing crew has been fastidious about maintaining the interior woodwork and teak to a very high standard.

$5,400,000 is a low asking price for Bad Girl. The owners know that it is time to sell. After a yard period, Bad Girl will offer the new owner years of amazing adventures at a fraction of the price of similar yachts.

USS Sachem: Kentucky’s Ghost Ship

KET Staff | July 14, 2020 12:00 pm

There aren’t many historical figures that could claim to have been part of Thomas Edison’s experiments, both World Wars, and a Madonna video. In fact, there may only be one, and it is currently sitting in a creek in Boone County, Kentucky.

“It was referred to as the ghost ship, and it is very creepy looking,” says Hillary Delaney, Local History Associate at Boone County Public Library. “It’s this old hulking mass of metal that’s sitting in this tiny little creek. It looks sort of gray and a little bit spooky. And I quickly learned that it was not that; it had a really rich, interesting history, and so I had to backpedal and learn a little bit more about why this huge boat is stuck in a tiny creek in Boone County.”

The boat was originally named Celt, and its story begins when it was built as a 186-foot luxury yacht in 1901. It was a private vessel with a chic mahogany interior, and its early years were spent cruising around New York Bay and Long Island Sound.

“But when World War I happened, we needed boats,” says Delaney. “The Navy would requisition private vessels, and these boats were a little more agile than some of the bigger military boats…They were worried about the German U-boats. They wanted vessels that could be light enough and agile enough to get around them, and so it was less about them being put into a combat position and more about them doing a recon job and warning other, larger vessels.”

That’s when Celt became USS Sachem.

“Portholes were covered over and the extra plating was put on where it needed to be,” says Sherrianne Swartz of The Sachem Project . “It had depth charges and a single machine-type gun on the top, and all the decking was plated.

“Thomas Edison was on this ship during World War I, doing experiments on submarine detection and mine detection and things like that,” says Swartz. “He actually had a lab on the vessel.”

Sachem – which was rechristened once again as USS Phenakite during World War II – served as a training vessel during both World Wars, and patrolled the Gulf of Mexico. After World War II ended, the veteran craft was repurposed first as a vessel for fishing charters, before being sold yet again to a tour boat company in New York.

“The Circle Line bought it and retooled it to be a tour vessel and be able to hold and seat hundreds of people on the deck,” says Swartz. “That’s where it lived a lot of its life in the 70s and 80s, touring New York Harbor.”

After a long career with The Circle Line, Sachem – which had been renamed Sightseer and then Circle Line V – was essentially used for scrap and abandoned. In the mid-1980s, Cincinnati businessman and boat enthusiast Robert Miller bought it and gave it back its WWI-era moniker. His intention was to restore Sachem and live on it. It was during that restoration that Sachem had its brush with pop-culture fame.

“Robert Miller was working on it to get it running so he could bring it back to Kentucky,” says Swartz. “And all of a sudden, a black limo pulled up.”

The story goes that a production assistant approached Miller and asked if he would allow his boat to be used as the backdrop for a scene in a music video for Madonna’s song, “Papa Don’t Preach.” He agreed, and the Sachem got an MTV cameo before leaving New York for what should have been a return to its origin as a privately owned recreational vessel.

Miller moved Sachem by way The Great Loop: from the Hudson River in New York through the Erie Canal, up into the Great Lakes, then down the Mississippi to the Ohio to where Miller ultimately hoped to make it his home.

“That’s why it was put into the creek,” says Delaney. “It’s sort of a private harbor that way. [Miller] was planning on restoring it, and then things changed. It remained there when the property changed hands.”

What’s left of the Sachem is an enormous skeleton, waterlogged and alternatingly stuck in the muck of a low water level or submerged when the creek floods.

“And every time that happens, it causes a little bit more damage. In five years, you’re not going to pull it out of there, unless you take it in pieces,” says Swartz.

“The vandalism might be the downfall before the elements are,” Swartz adds, referring to the damage left behind by those who trespass on the private property where Sachem is now located.

“You don’t see a boat of that size and purpose here very often, so I think that’s part of the reason people are so fascinated,” says Delaney. “It was used for all these cool things and it has this amazing history, and I think nature took its toll and circumstance took its toll.”

Old News, Vintage Photos & Nostalgic Stories

Ohio’s legendary 113-year-old ghost ship.

186 foot yacht

It was another wonderful day for the kayakers as they were cruising through the forest. Yet they certainly did not expect to discover a ghost ship that was over a century old.

Shockingly, as they cruised along the Ohio River, they discovered the amazing sight of an abandoned vessel. Even though the pictures themselves were really neat, they did a little bit more research about the ship.

James Malott

It turned out that they had found a ship with a proud history within the United States of America. The ship was initially crafted by a Delaware ship maker named Pusey and Jones. The ship manufacturer was started by Mr. Joshua Pusey and his partner John Jones in the city of Wilmington.

James Malott

They rented an area from a whaling company that was positioned through the Pennsylvania Railroad. In the year 1851, the company bought an interest then changed its name to Betts, Pusey, Jones & Seal. Three years later, their bet paid off, and they constructed the first iron-hulled sail boat in the United States. The company built a vessel that took the crown at America’s Cup.

James Malott

It was the first steel yacht to ever take home the crown.  In 1887, the company built the first steel-hulled yacht to win the America’s Cup, Volunteer . Naturally, the company caught the attention of the of man name J. Maxwell.

He was a railroad executive of the same Pennsylvania Railroad that Pusey and Jones were positioned next to. And although he was a businessman, one of his true passions was yachting. Maxwell won the 1907 King’s Cup with his ship Queen in a race against Commodore Vanderbilt.

The ship was initially constructed two years into the 20 th century and was created as a yacht for J. Maxwell who was a renowned railroad executive.  It first set sail in the second week of April in the year 1902 where it stayed faithful until its first change of ownership.

Just before World War 1, the Celt was bought by a gentleman named Manton B. Metcalf and was happily used under the new name of Sachem .

But when the war broke out in 1914, Germany’s key strategy to defeat the British was to be able to stop the resources from North America from being delivered to the British Empire. Germany was trying to starve and collapse Britain’s economy.

James Malott

Germany caught wind of the United States entering the war and they embarked on a mission to cut off supplies between the two Allies.

Germany believed they had the advantage because of their famous submarines, named the U-Boats. Germany patrolled the Atlantic trying to send any shipment headed towards Britain to the bottom of the ocean.

This was the first time that submarines played a pivotal role in warfare. U-boats were an incredibly effective tool. They were almost impossible to spot and they could strike any boat without warning. During World War One, the submarines were practically impossible to counter.

In order to combat this disadvantage, the Navy started to rent well-crafted boats from the country’s wealthy elite. The goal was to use the quick ships to outclass the submarines by spotting and outmaneuvering the enemy’s submarines.

The 186-foot yacht that was now owned by Mr. Metcalf was the perfect fit. As the United States entered the war in April of the year 1917, they began searching for vessels that could help them. The yacht Sachem was found and then acquired by the Navy in July and was converted into a Navy vessel within a month.

James Malott

The ship kept its name and was called SP 192 or the USS Sachem.  The ship was equipped with charges that were used to sink the submarines as well as machine guns to respond to the threat of torpedoes. It turned out to be a very effective strategy. The USS Sachem was used to patrol the coastline of the United States.

And while the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, dubbed World War One as the “The war to end wars,” the US chose to heavily invest in learning about the U-boats throughout the war to ensure they created a proper counter-attack in the case of future wars.

And for this experiment, they used the USS Sachem to conduct research through none other than Thomas Edison.

James Malott

Edison is known as one of the greatest inventors and businessmen in history. Even though Edison invented the light bulb and pushed the electric grid into existence, he was trusted by the US government to help combat the United State’s biggest disadvantage at sea. Edison looked like the perfect fit to find a successful strategy to combat and sink the dangerous U-Boats.

While it’s a controversial claim, the use of the boat was tracked down through a series of letters to Edison’s wife and by the tracking of the USS Sachem during the time of Edison’s experiments. First, Edison conducted tests around the New York Harbor before he ultimately sailed it across to Florida and off the Caribbean.

But after he devoted his time to research, Edison and the Navy developed some friction. Edison published an article in 1923 accusing the US Navy “pigeon-holing” every solution he brought to the table. At the end of the war in 1918, Edison, the US Navy, and the USS Sachem went their separate ways.

Sachem proudly completed the war and was returned to its rightful owner.  The New York businessman, Manton B. Metcalf, of New York got his yacht back on February 10, 1919.

After Manton had received his boat, he kept it for a time before he chose to sell it off to a banker named Roland Taylor who was from the city of Philadelphia.  During the Great Depression, the boat then was pawned off to Jake Martin who used the yacht as a fishing vessel in 1932. Four families would work together to create a small $2 investment to catch some fish. After a decade of action in the fishing industry, the war was once again coming to the United States.

The Navy again purchased the fishing yacht for $65,000 early in 1942. It was converted back into a war machine by Robert Jacobs Inc then was renamed the USS Phenakite or PYc-25.

On the first day of July in 1942, the vessel patrolled the coastline around the Florida. After effectively protecting and combating U-boats, the vessel was quickly decommissioned so it could receive upgrades. The ship was back into action by November of 1944.

The historic yacht was then used to conduct experiments and testing for new sonar technology for another year before it was sent into retirement by the US Navy in October of 1945. A month later, the ship was given to Maritime Commission to disassemble the warship.

The yacht was then returned to its owner Mr. Martin. He then chose to rename it as Sachem just before the end of 1945. He resold the boat to Circle Line. The Sachem became the flagship tour boat for the Circle Line in New York City.

The yacht could hold 500 tourists as the ship elegantly showed the passengers the proud history and beauty of New York. It served faithfully for decades before it was retired from the tourism industry in 1983. Three years later, the boat was purchased by Robert Miller, a man from Ohio. He offered a small investment of $7,500.

After the owner happily accepted the money, Mr. Miller pulled the boat out of the muck it was thrown into and repaired the boat over the course of ten days.  One day, while he was working on the ship, a limo cruised up to Mr. Miller. He came asking if Madonna could use the newly remodeled ship.

It was at this point, that the old Yacht entered the show business. It was showcased in the music video for the song “Papa Don’t Preach”.

After the boat was restored, Miller cruised around the region to avoid pricey docking fees. He even used the Sachem on Independence Day in the year 1986 as Ronald Reason relit the Statue of Liberty’s torch. Mr. Miller attended the celebration that was filled with music and fireworks.

Shortly after Independence Day, Miller chose to take his vessel home he bought outside of Northern Kentucky. The land was located just outside of Cincinnati Ohio. This last journey would end the colorful history of the yacht.

Today, it still sits 25 miles from Cincinnati, where the river casually flows to meet the Mississippi River.

Kayakers often stumble upon this ship without knowing the proud history behind it, but the abandoned vessel has been now dubbed the “Ghost Ship.”

Here is another ghost ship story from us: The mystery of the Octavius: An 18th-century ghost ship was discovered with the captain’s body found frozen at his desk, still holding his pen

The next time you’re in Cincinnati, feel free to rent a kayak and check out the vessel that was once commanded by Thomas Edison.

186 foot yacht

Most anglers are surprised this particular hull isn’t twenty feet. The 186TFX fishes like much longer hulls. It offers several economical advantages, without sacrificing big water fishability. Our smart floor plan maximizes a wide trolling cockpit, with plenty of room for your guests to move about.

Quick access to bait, tackle, rods, and controls can all be found in the cockpit. The same removable console door system found on the larger boats are also standard on this boat, giving you plenty of storage for any situation.

The legendary Yar-Craft hull takes on rough water with a signature ride and style you will only find when running a Yar-Craft. Smooth turns, a snappy hole shot, and a dry ride that other 18 footers envy are characteristics one will feel in this boat.
