Seawind 1370

The market for comfortable and spacious performance multihulls continues to grow. Seawind is perhaps less well known in Europe than French brands such as Outremer, however the yard’s background as a sister company to long-standing trimaran builder Corsair effectively gives it a long history in this market.

The 1370 is a long awaited model following an extended Covid-related shut down of the Vietnam production facility. The boat won’t premiere at a show until Cannes in September, but the first seven boats are already on the water, including hull No2, Ruby Rose 2, owned by YouTubers Terysa Vanderloo and Nick Fabbri.

Best catamaran and multihull: We sail the very best yachts on two and three hulls

There are many categories in the European Yacht of the Year awards, from the best luxury yachts and performance yachts to the best yachts for families and event a best…

The 1370 is a 45-footer with lightship displacement of 12,300kg. That’s a little heavier than the Outremer 45 and HH44, for instance, but almost 5% lighter than the Excess 14. Modern reverse bows and immersed hull shapes drawn by French-based Yacht Design Collective are intended to combine high performance potential with good load carrying capacity.

Accommodation layouts are geared around the needs of long-term cruising couples and their guests. The modern interior style has ash finishes and large front-opening windows to optimise natural ventilation. A wide lifting tri-fold door aft enables the bridgedeck accommodation to be easily opened onto the aft cockpit in sunny climes, while giving protection against the elements when necessary.

This range of Mortain & Mavrikios-designed lightweight cruising catamarans has its roots in the former Martinique Multicap Caraïbes yard, which built some 25 boats until 2010. A couple of years ago the designers and Christian Hernandez decided to revive the range, with construction in a new MultiCat Algarve yard, at the mouth of the Rio Guadiana in Portugal.

Red cedar strip planking and epoxy is used to create the underwater profile, while deck and topsides are of composite with a recycled Airex foam core and epoxy using 45% bioresins. The 1370 has a displacement of only 8.5 tonnes, placing it firmly at the light end of the cruising catamaran spectrum, yet it’s still designed for a payload of three tonnes. The updated rig has a square top mainsail and overlapping jib. Shallow keels are fitted, rather than daggerboards.

course catamaran 2024

This full flybridge design fills a big slot that previously existed between the Lagoon 55 that was launched in 2021 and the more lavishly appointed Sixty 5. The new design’s huge aft cockpit can be fully opened out onto the water, including hull sides that hinge down like butterfly wings, creating an area even wider than the yacht’s generous 32ft beam allows. There’s also a large forward cockpit on the same level as the saloon, and with direct access, making this an ideal yacht for larger parties.

Layout options include five cabins with a bridgedeck galley, or four cabins with the galley in the port hull, accessed by its own stairs. This version also has a smaller bar area on the bridgedeck, along with a larger saloon.

As with the 55, the rig is stepped further forward than on earlier models and is fitted with overlapping headsails. Naval architect VPLP says these offer more flexibility and efficiency on a boat of this type than the near ubiquitous non-overlapping jibs of today’s yachts.

The best boats are invariably the result of considerable experience. This aluminium exploration catamaran has its roots in more than eight years and 50,000 miles of voyaging on a 2005 41ft production catamaran – and the lessons learned and problems encountered during that time. The concept was created by Ben Brehmer and Ashley Stobbart for the next stage of their voyaging life with a young family.

The result is a “focus on expedition-style comfort, reliability, and suitability for short-handed crews,” Brehmer told me. It’s a powerful hull with watertight bulkheads intended for high latitude adventures, as well as use in the tropics.

High bridgedeck clearance helps provide comfort at sea, while protection from sun and inclement weather is maximised.

All lines are led to a forward cockpit, allowing a lone watch keeper to handle the boat. The new coachroof design maximises visibility and light and gives the option to fully enclose the forward cockpit with removable glass. Although initially envisaged as a one-off, the first boat is scheduled to start build in June at a New Zealand yard that’s capable of producing multiple examples in parallel.

course catamaran 2024

This Dutch yard is one of a number of the multihull builders leading the way in producing yachts that can be recycled, while also making big steps towards decarbonisation.

The 58ft R6 is intended as a rugged yacht capable of taking owners anywhere between the poles and the Mediterranean. It follows 40ft and 50ft R4 and R5 models. With beam only fractionally short of 30ft, it’s a big yacht by any standards and the builders have sought to make the most of the huge volumes on offer.

There’s lofty headroom, large windows that maximise the view of the outside world and a choice of spacious seating areas. In addition to sumptuous owners and guest accommodation, there’s an optional cabin for two crew, recognising this is an important factor to recruiting and retaining crew.

This is also Vaan’s first model with twin staircases leading down from the bridgedeck into each hull. Benefits include easier circulation of people, improved privacy, and an option to have the galley in the port hull rather than on the bridgedeck.

“The Vaan core philosophy of sailing, style and sustainability of course applies again,” founder Igor Kluin tells me. “This boat is made for sailors, with clean styling and truly sustainable material use and propulsion.”

10 Best Catamarans in 2024

Three Sailboats Racing In The Indian Ocean

We gave our Sailing writers one job: Find the best and most popular catamarans and review them.

Our review team always considers durability, price, quality, and value in their reviews.

course catamaran 2024

A catamaran is a sailboat that has a multi-hull design. It gives it more stability because it’s wider and that creates more livable space for more people.

Read about the best multihull boats in this article and learn which one is best for your voyages.

The biggest advantages of a multihull are:

  • Multihulls are usually faster than monohulls, especially on downwind runs, reaches and broad reaches. You can travel further per day and outrun inclement weather
  • They are more stable than a monohull. Sailing flat definitely has its advantages
  •  It is less tiring sailing a multihull
  •  More space!
  •  For cruising the draft is less than a monohull which means you can go into shallower water safely

Lagoon Catamarans

lagoon-40-featured

Where to buy:

Where to buy lagoon 40:.

Lagoon has always enjoyed a sweet spot in the 38 to 40-foot catamaran market. The Lagoon 380 became one of the most popular cats ever, with nearly 1,000 hulls being produced over a 20-year run. The L400 and L39 attempted to tweak that popular design, but neither caught on to the extent the 380 did.

The new Lagoon 40 is turning heads for many reasons. The Lagoon 380 is officially off the Lagoon website, so it might finally be time for the torch to be handed to a new cat. And the 40 has just the right mix of modern features, small size, and affordability that many cruisers and families seek.

Here’s a go-anywhere boat that looks good, sails easily, and keeps you comfortable.

Leopard Catamarans

leopard-42-on-water

Where to buy Leopard 42:

The Leopard 42 is the company’s replacement for the 40. It integrates several design elements that were proven on the new 50 and 45-foot models, including an upper lounge area atop the coachroof. The design also has the unique forward salon door that opens for direct access to the foredeck and a sun pad lounging area.

Like all Leopard catamarans, the 42 is not only comfortable to stay on, but it’s also fun to sail. All sailing controls lead to the compact helm. Everything can be handled from this one control station. The full-roach main and overlapping genoa provide plenty of power, and optional electric winches make sail handling a snap.

The Leopard 42 share company in the market for 42-foot cats with some very attractive boats–the Lagoon 42, the Bali 4.2, and the FP Astrea, to name a few.

  • Year Launched: 2021 (There have been several designs to carry the "Leopard 42" name)

Fountain Pajot 80 Catamaran Superyacht

Fountaine Pajot 80 Catamaran Superyacht Rear

Where to buy Fountain Pajot 80 Catamaran Superyacht:

Fountaine Pajot, one of the foremost builders of sailing catamarans, unveiled their biggest “ Super Catamaran ” ever: the Thira 80.

The release comes on the tail of an ever-increasing trend in the catamaran market—the bigger-the- better era . With Sunreef, Lagoon, and Gunboat all making boats in the 70 to 80-foot range, these companies clearly see a market for the catamaran superyacht.

Boats this size are easily comparable to a motor yacht of more than 125 feet long. The very wide beam provides cavernous interiors for more livable space. And they have plenty of room for the toys of the trade—tenders, jet skis, paddleboards, and more.

While sailing is always preferable, its 175 to 300-horsepower engines are more than capable of moving it on calm days. And it’s hard to beat the ride and comfort of a catamaran at sea, with its extra stability and lack of heeling in the wind.

So, is bigger really better? Let’s dive in and tour the new Fountaine Pajot 80 and all that she has to offer.

  • Length: 78.7 feet/23.98 meters
  • Beam: 36.4 feet/11.09 meters
  • Draft: 6.9 feet/2.10 meters
  • Displacement: 66.0 tons (approximate)
  • Sail area Main: 2,153 sqft/200 sqm Genoa 1,507 sqft/140 sqm

Kinetic Catamarans

Kinetic KC54

kinetic-kc54-on-water

Where to buy Kinetic KC54:

The Kinetic may be fresh on the scene of the Super Cats but it is on the cutting edge of the finest fast craft in terms of performance and latest technology while also having features, impeccable finishes and the amenities of stylish cruising.

This has been awarded the Cruising World Best Large Multihull 50ft and Above Boat of the Year 2022 as well as the Special Recognition Award – for Overall Excellence 2022 by Sailing Magazine. Said Gerry Douglas of Sailing Magazine: ‘This was the Tesla of sailboats…in terms of design and execution and technology, it hit all three of those marks. This boat is built without compromise’.

These catamarans are all-carbon construction, an aggressively lightweight construction and set up for short-handed sailing. Mast is coachroof mounted and there are options for centreboards and daggerboard. There are three steering stations (two outside aft on each hull, one inside right behind the working cockpit) to suit weather conditions and personal preference.

Xquisite Yachts

Xquisite X5 Plus

xquisite-x5-plus

Where to buy Xquisite X5 Plus:

2022 saw the Xquisite X5 named the Cruising World magazine’s Best Cruising Catamaran of the year – yet again (it won the Best Multihull over 50ft award in 2017) .

As Ed Sherman said: ‘There are 40,000 man-hours invested in this boat. And you can see it.’ To the bolts that are torqued to the 2 weeks spent with each new owner training them on systems – this is a strong product, well designed by Rudolf Jonker and built by Phoenix Marine incorporating all of Tamas Hamor’s ideas and experience. This really is a well thought out 53 ft cruising sailboat and is another South African-built catamaran loaded with important details, not only the visible ones.

The goal for Xquisite is to supply fully equipped catamarans for long-term live-aboard cruising with comprehensive lifetime service assistance for the owners.

There are so many features from the gutters to catch rain-water on the coachroof to footswitches for the electric winches at the helm. Solid handrails all around the deck for maximum security to the below deck running-rigging network! In terms of the design and construction much thought has gone into weight saving. There is no faulting the systems installations.

All lines lead to the helm through below deck channels that are easily accessible with winches well thought out. The helm is slightly raised to port under a bimini with a sliding fully-battened canvas roof that is easily raised and lowered. There is an overall ambiance of space and light in the berths and galley which opens onto the cockpit.

Sailing performance was impressive with its powerful rig – however a heavy, low-slung cruising cat with keels instead of boards to get to your destination in comfort and style.

Regatta In Indian Ocean, Sailboat And Catamaran. Helicopter View

Big ‘blue water’ Sailing

Blue water sailing refers to the open sea. Non-blue or pond sailing refers to inland waters and coastal areas.

The difference in specific design of a blue water or non-blue water vessel is for the ship captain’s visibility as well as based on the hazards of the area they are to be used.  A bluewater (offshore) catamaran is designed for voyages in very rough seas. They are usually 40ft or longer, designed to be very stable, carry heavy loads and very safe.  Ocean sailing has different dangers to coastal water with different challenges – sailing through storms, longer distances, more maneuvering space, night sailing – and more gear, better technology, skills and sturdier vessels are needed.

When sailing in confined waters it is important to have more reactive steerage, less maneuvering time, you do not need to store multiday provisions as you are more reliant on daytime sailing, do not need so much speed so have smaller sails and lower horsepower engines and perhaps the intention if for pleasure alone so one of the major considerations will be the  layout of the vessel.

For most sailors the choice of size is between 40-50 feet which is manageable for 2 persons with lots of room to spread out and entertain or have friends on board and that is easy to dock both in terms of space and cost.

Three Sailboats Racing In The Indian Ocean

First questions to ask yourself

First up consider these 5 points before you decide on your multihull model, length and manufacturer.

Will you be using your sailing vessel for coastal or blue water adventures? What is your primary objective and then: is this for family pleasure or entertaining or Charter?

For sailing

Must it be suited for single-handed sailing? What proficiency of sailing do I have/need? Degree of technology required? Equipment required?

Functional Use

How many berths do I need? How much privacy? Elegance, comfort and style – what is required? Space for ‘toys’?  If for charter or private use with crew – extra berths.

Your total budget must include the initial cost of the vessel plus survey, transport, upgrading of equipment, insurance, etc – there is a lot to consider. Would a second hand vessel be a consideration? What is the smallest I can go?

Annual Costs

What will my ongoing budget be for Insurance, berthing, maintenance, repairs, haul out fees, etc? This excludes any travel costs

Where do I want to berth my vessel? Or living aboard?

It is said that BOAT is an acronym for: Break Out Another Thousand!

Final Thoughts

Multihull vessels have a lot of the potential for creature comforts that motor yachts have without the constant thrumming of the engines. But they still require a modicum or rudimentary understanding of sailing.

There’s also a bit of maintenance required, but this is something–like having kids–that you figure out along the way.

Another popular boating segment is the power catamaran. Like their sailing counterparts, power catamaran boats have great living space, but without the need to understand sailing principles. Either way, both multihull markets look to be growing in popularity over the next many years.

The resale market for multihull ships also looks promising, so getting one, trying it out for a couple of seasons and selling it again is a possibility without losing too much on the purchase price.

Before you sign the cheque….

So you’ve located some a catamaran for sale that looks promising. It’s one of the models on the list here and you’re wondering if its in the best shape relative to the price. Here’s what you do:

Take time out to go and view it in person. Book yourself an experience aboard and head over to your closest marina and speak to owners (this may well help you create your shortlist too). Consider these points before purchasing:

  •       Pre-book buyer’s sea trials for your shortlist
  •       Select the perfect sailing vessel for you (and if it’s for your family make sure they agree too!)
  •       Used – get a certified hull survey, safety comes first
  •       Get annual insurance quotes
  •       Calculate dockage – purchase or rent a slip or dock
  •       Calculate monthly upkeep and maintenance
  •       Calculate extra costs like navigational devices & fittings
  •       Draft your own checklist
  •       Draft & sign off sale & purchase contracts
  •       Draft & sign off a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA)
  •       Ensure you are satisfied 100%
  •       Execute payment and take transfer of ownership
  •       Register and insure your vessel

Check all necessary Stock is aboard – Sail away!

Pre-Departure Checklist

Some ideas for you –

  • Always pre-check the weather and wind conditions prior to any excursion on the water
  • Always know the tide table in your head, so you know what the ocean is doing at all times, incoming or outgoing tide, and what is the tidal range if you are in an ocean estuary or channel.
  • Check you have fuel, water, food and all the basics before loading passengers aboard, and follow these easy steps to ensure safety is first at all times.
  • Plan your upcoming voyage, does it feature high swells, rocky shores, and cold water
  • Check Safety equipment, making sure you have enough life jackets for all sea-farers
  • Check sails, sheets and lines. All sailing gear
  • Check your engines – Open fuel lines, check oil and spark plugs
  • Check fuel tank levels and have extra fuel aboard for an emergency
  • Start the motor, make sure water is coming out to cool the motor
  • Test both forward and reverse gears on the engine before guests board
  • Check that you have a working and full battery communications radio, with all correct channels programmed, and that all the vessel lights and electrics are in working order
  • Check for first aid kits, manual hand pump, paddles, lifejackets , additional lines, fresh drinking water and food for passengers plus some spare in case your voyage is longer than expected, necessary repair tools & kit and flags
  • Strap any equipment and gear down safely before you start to motor
  • If you have passengers boarding, ensure you give a proper safety briefing and point out where all the safety gear is on the vessel. Children should be included in the briefing and be secured properly before departure

Catamarans versus Trimarans

Trimarans have limited space in slimmer hull designs generally. This makes Catamarans with their comfortable open leisure space both above and below deck far preferred for leisure sailing.

On the plus side for Trimarans are their speed and seaworthiness.

How Safe are Multihull Boats at Sea?

Probably a close second in terms of questions asked. On a twin hull design the buoyancy is on the outer edges of the boat and their is greater stability and less rolling when drifting or trolling compared to a monohull.

Catamarans are safe in rough seas because of their wide stance which makes them stable with increased motion comfort and excess buoyancy due to lack of ballast. They are easy to maneuver and with high speeds that may help them outrun storms with skilled crew who know the vessel. A trimaran is the safest of multihulls with the 3 hulls, centering of its weight and anti-drift plan. The righting torque between a catamaran and trimaran is significantly different.

An important consideration is this – if your catamaran is anything longer than 45ft, unless specifically modified for single handed sailing, then it probably cannot be sailed alone. At some stage in your journey you may well have to sail alone – can it be done?

As Blue Water Sailing Vessels

Catamarans are more stable and fast and depending on conditions some can distance more than 200 miles in a day.

Cats usually sail faster than monohulls (standard) due to the weight of them and displacement, especially on a run or broad reach when the sails are perpendicular to the wind. There are many variables to consider.

Solo Sailing a Multihull

Most small and medium-sized cruising catamarans can be sailed single-handedly. The skill of the sailor with high tech equipment such as electric winches and powered sail control, layout (such as all lines to the cockpit, roller furling mainsail, autopilot, etc) and safety precautions make it an adventure not to be missed.

If your catamaran is longer than 45ft, unless specifically modified for single-handed sailing, you will not be able to safely sail it alone. Consider:

  • What the minimum length of the vessel would suit your needs to handle on your own
  • Layout planning is essential
  • Space you need
  • The bigger the boat means larger sails which will be harder to raise and repair
  • The bigger the boat means more power and speed – be comfortable with your vessel
  • Update your sailing skills

Finding the Right Size

It is a very personal choice but at the very least the advice would be to buy the smallest catamaran you think would meet your needs – this is because you have many other costs to consider and the bigger the vessel the more the costs of upkeep, dockage, space for crew.

A perfect size for blue water sailing (including around the world) is around 40 ft, small enough to be sailed by one person but big enough to provide safety and speed. The smallest size to consider to cross the ocean safely and in some comfort by consensus is around 30ft. Any smaller and you will possibly have the following problems as dealing with large seas the size of your vessel does count :

  • A smaller vessel is always pitching and yawing and this impacts the crew negatively over a long period of time or in crisis situations
  • Low bridge deck clearance due to the small size of the vessel
  • when sailing upwind the waves are projected with speed and force into the decks understand (between the pontoons) creating bridge deck slamming.  This vibration and noise impacts the crew and is very tiring – sailing downwind to prevent this may not be where you want to go
  • Not having enough space for all the supplies and equipment needed for a long passage
  • Alongside the problem of weight to be carried is the problem of distribution of this weight over the length of the vessel safely

Multihulls best for ponds, slow rivers and calm bodies of inland water benefit from having flat hulls to provide shallow draft with great deck space manufactured from aluminium or fibreglass. Make sure you take extra food and water and all safety supplies just in case of an emergency!

The question everyone wants to know – how much does it cost to live onboard?

There are many variables depending on your lifestyle, where you intend to cruise or berth and how much you want to travel aboard. A good estimate would be between US$2000-US$5000 per month for a family of 4, a little less for a couple/single person plus the maintenance cost of your boat which is on average 5-10% of the cost of the boat. The maintenance of your boat varies depending of equipment, age, condition and size.

What do I need to consider differently to live on-board rather than racing ?

Racing vessels are designed for speed and exhilaration and safe fun.

Living on-board requires space and comfort – space for storage, large-sized comfortable berths, living space, entertaining space, home-space! You need to know your long term goals and what your personal needs are – do you need a dedicated work area or desk space/permanent interconnectivity for work?

Generally cruising catamarans have wider hulls which give you more space as well as creating more drag which slows your boat down and is more costly on fuel.

Many used charter boats are seen as great purchases for living on-board, however make sure that they are suited for blue water sailing and not only for coastal water.

Frequently asked questions about Catamarans

This varies greatly, often defined used or new by the design, size, year and finish.  Quality vessels are built to last and retain market-related value if undamaged.

On average a 45-foot catamaran can range from US$250,000-US$1,000,000.

The fully loaded Isla 40 costs around US$527,000. The Balance 42 sail away price fully cruise equipped is US$1,450,000 while the Kinetic 54’s price tag approaches US$3,000,000. The modern styled Sunreef 80 costs around $6.2 million.

We think that the Seawind 1600 is, for its size and quality, a superb priced performance product at US$900,000.

One of the major benefits for a cruising vessel is to be able to enter shallower seas – catamarans have a shallower draft than monohulls and therefore a great appeal to folk for whom this is a major consideration. Most lagoons are only 6-8 feet deep in the South Pacific. The Caribbean and other areas where you have reefs to navigate and shallow sandbanks to cross to enter overnight anchor stops draft is a very important consideration. Always remember to read your tide tables and swell.

A catamaran is lighter on the water and therefore takes less energy to move, however they have 2 engines which drives up fuel costs. They are more fuel-efficient on flat water (compared to equal horsepower and number of engines) but in heavy weather the monohull’s hull design causes less resistance and therefore higher efficiency.

With lighter weight and high buoyancy generally they have low water drag by comparison to the displacement of a monohull of the same length.

The trampoline serves many purposes – primarily to allow water to quickly pass through, allowing the bow to rise and so preventing the vessel from flipping and they are ideal for pleasure purposes.

To sail around the world the vessel needs to be equipped for offshore cruising and have a heavy load capacity.

The bigger Modern blue water cats are built with this in mind – supplies, crew, technology and gear.

A bigger boat has many advantages such as speed (not only to travel longer distance in shorter time but also to outrun potential bad weather) and comfort space, space for crew and friends, storage space for supplies and fun equipment, etc.

It is important to balance price against comforts, maintenance and repair costs as well as any potential income from your vessel (chartering, Air BNB, hosting courses on-board, etc) – generally here the bigger your vessel the higher the potential for greater income.

The larger your vessel the higher your expenses are in all ways – from Insurance to berthing, maintenance, haul out fees and equipment.

Why this Course?

Sailing a large catamaran is not really too much different from sailing a monohull but catamaran sailing has a few tricks and nuances that you ought to know first especially if you're going on a bareboat yacht charter with a catamaran.

learn to sail a catarmaran

You'll invest about 3 hours of your time to add this Catamaran Sailing Confidence Course to your NauticEd Sailing Resume. The cost of the sailing course is just $39 ( for a limited introductory period it is $27). Once you've finished the course you'll have complete confidence that you can transition your existing monohull sailing skills to sailing a catamaran . And if you're going on a bareboat yacht charter, yacht charter companies will be more inclined to accept your charter request with Catamaran sailing knowledge on your Sailing Resume and Certification.

You'll learn the tricks of sailing a catamaran and maneuvering a catamaran so that you'll know what to do in potentially dangerous situations. The information contained will make sailing a catamaran much more enjoyable and less stressful the first time out and you'll have the confidence that maneuvering a catamaran is now easily within your abilities.

As with all NauticEd sailing lessons, you can return as many times as you like to brush up on sailing a catamaran skills and if you're not completely satisfied, we'll happily refund your investment. Feel free to contact NauticEd Sailing School at any time.

The Catamaran Sailing Confidence Course was co-authored by several experts in sailing catamarans throughout the world: Nick Harvey of  Lagoon Catamarans and Captain Grant Headifen, 50 Ton USCG Master Mariner and Director of Education for NauticEd. Additional guidance and input were provided by George Day, Publisher of Blue Water Sailing Magazine and Multihull Quarterly Magazine.

It was very clear to understand

Excellent info to multi hull systems

Great course, good tips about safety

Great insight.

Pointing out the excellence and safety issues with cats. I had a 43-foot one for 8 years and miss it a lot.

I've chartered big cats twice but I didn't know the trick to get the bow to pass through the wind easily until I took this course. That alone was worth the price of the course. Very cool!

Good for understanding the basics!

Sailing a cat is definitely different from sailing a monohull. This course walks you through the differences and prepares you for your first experience with a cat. That being said, it is not a substitute for hands on and time on task. You have to get on a cat and practice to become proficient at handling a cat both under sail and power.

As an experienced monohull sailor, I found this to be right on point. The maneuvering session was extremely helpful and the simulations instructive. The information about sail loads and dangerous situations was new to me: I am very glad I got to go through this before my charter.

Very good testing approach

Veoma profesionalan i koristan kurs Very professional course

Excerpt from the course

And if there weren't enough advantages to sailing a catamaran here is another.

The mainsail traveler on a catamaran is significantly longer than on a cruising monohull. Thus you can take real advantage of this. The mainsail can now be adjusted in 2 different ways: using the traveler line or by adjusting the mainsheet.

When sailing close hauled on a catamaran in heavier air, move the traveler upwind (on the opposite side of the sail) and let off on the main sheet. This will allow the boom to rise a little and "twist out" the top of the sail. Twisting the sail out "deflates" the top of the sail and should be done in the case of slightly stronger winds. In light air, make sure that the top of the mainsail is not “losing air” meaning, keep the traveler close to the center and tighten the mainsheet to make sure the main cannot open up at the top.

As soon as the breeze kicks up, bring your traveler up a bit more and ease the mainsheet so that the boom does not come past the center point.

traveler

Once out sailing you'll be able to dispel one of the biggest "myths" surrounding catamarans because modern cats actually do point pretty well!!

The flatter the water, the better they will point and it'll be possible to sail in the high 30s degrees off the wind if your cat has the genoa tracks up on the coach roof, you will have a nice tight sheeting angle allowing you to go upwind comfortably.

As soon as you bear away from the wind slightly, you will want to bring the mainsail traveler down to leeward and start easing the mainsail (similar to a monohull).

Marcus and Eric

"Thanks so much for a great week. Really enjoyed the week and all the challenges. Luis did an excellent job in passing on skills to a team of rookies. We really hope to return next year. Thanks again to the Learn to Sail team."

"I just wanted to drop you a line to thank for having us in your course and giving us the most amazing learning experience. While the course was challenging at times, our Instructor Luis was very friendly, thorough, helpful and professional throughout. We felt lucky to have him as our instructor and I think you should too."

Day Skipper Student - May 2024

"Was an awesome expirience with my DAY Skipper, 5 days of sun, fun and learning in the confortoble and nice Marina of Portimao. Our instructor Steve was very calm and easygoing with a lot of expirience, was easy to learn from him."

"What an EXCELLENT trip!! Just finished a 5 day RYA Competent Crew sailing course and it was excellent. Mark is a very good and patient teacher and a really nice guy as well!. Starting out as a total novice, there's a lot to learn, but Mark talked us through the theory and practical aspects and made it really enjoyable.

"Recently completed competent crew and day skipper with Learn2sail. Fantastic if intense at times experience! Excellent instructors. Portimao beautiful place to learn to sail. Thanks to Mark and Jane for their hospital"

Worrell 1000 Race - Coming again in 2026

Worrell 1000

50th Anniversary - 2024

"The Spark that Lit The Flame"

~Join us again in 2026~

The 2024 event came to an amazing close May 24th, 2024 in VA Beach, with all the remaining 11 teams finishing within minutes of each other! Please see our Facebook Page for recorded videos of not only ALL of the finishes for each leg, but the Awards Banquet (in its entirety!) held Saturday, May 25th, 2024.

We already miss everyone involved, including our online community!!!!!! But don't fret - we've already begun planning the 2026 event.....Stay Tuned....

If it wasn't for that liquid-courage-fuelled bar bet between the Worrell brothers, the race would not be in existence. And although the first organized race wasn't until 1976, it was that fateful trip between Mike and Chris Worrell in October of 1974 that really lit a fire in Michael Worrell to make this race a world-wide sensation.

“The Worrell 1000 Race” is an offshore long-distance beach catamaran sailboat race to be held in May 2024 in the Atlantic waters between Florida and Virginia Beach, VA. The race will cover approximately 1000 miles with overnight stops at multiple locations along the East Coast of the United States. The Organizing Authority (OA) for the 2022 Worrell 1000 Race will be “Worrell 1000 Race Reunion Race, Inc.”, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, (dba “Worrell 1000 Race”).

Ultimate guide to cannes yachting festival 2024.

Insider Tips from a 4-time visitor: Must-See Boats, and How to Make the Most of Your Visit

Cannes—a name that instantly evokes images of glamour, luxury, and the stunning French Riviera. But beyond its famous film festival, Cannes is also home to one of the most anticipated events in the boating world: Cannes Yachting Festival, Europe's largest in-water boat show. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or just dipping your toes into the world of catamarans, the 2024 edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival promises an experience like no other. But with so much to see and do, how do you make the most of it? We've been to the show several times, so we’ve got you covered. Let’s dive into how to navigate this exciting event and make your catamaran shopping journey a breeze.

Here's your Ultimate Guide to the Cannes Yachting Festival 2024

The Cannes Yachting Festival, held from September 10th to 15th, 2024, is the ultimate event for anyone in the market for a sailing catamaran. Navigating the show can be overwhelming, but with a few insider tips, you’ll be cruising through the event like a pro.

Spread across two harbors, the Vieux Port and Port Canto, the festival showcases over 600 boats, from sleek monohulls to luxurious motor yachts, and of course, a stunning array of catamarans. Tickets for the event can be purchased online or at the entrance, but we recommend buying them in advance to avoid the long lines.

Pro Tip 1:  The show tends to be busiest from Friday to Sunday, so if you’re looking to avoid the crowds and enjoy a more relaxed experience, plan your visit for Tuesday through Thursday. Also, the show opens at 10 AM, and getting there early gives you a head start before the crowds pour in.

Pro Tip 2:  If you are only interested in sailing catamarans and don't intend to visit the Vieux Port, note that the sailing catamarans area in Port Canto is not in Cannes town. There is a shuttle taking you between the harbors but to save time you might want to book accommodation around Pointe Croisette.

Must-See Catamarans at the Cannes Yachting Festival

The 2024 edition of the Cannes Yachting Festival will feature a stellar lineup of catamarans from leading manufacturers as well as some 'new kids on the block'. Here’s some of the models you won’t want to miss:

Some favorites from well-known manufacturers:

First timers in Cannes:

Seawind 1370

Swiss Cat 55

Pro Tip 3:  To make the most of your time at the show, we highly recommend using Catamaran Show's unique comparison tool  to explore and compare these boats in advance. Our website features detailed information on over 200 sailing catamaran models, so you can arrive at the festival with a clear idea of which boats are the best fit for your sailing dreams.

Pro Tip 4:  Remember that getting aboard some of the most popular catamarans often requires booking in advance. So, plan ahead to ensure you don’t miss out on seeing your dream boat. Many brands offer a booking on their website.

To make the most of the Cannes Yachting Festival

Here's some more good advice that will help you:

Explore Both Harbors of the Cannes Yachting Festival

Even if you are there for sailing catamarans mainly, it is worthwhile to explore the Vieux Port too to see the full range of what’s on offer by taking the shuttle boat between them. Don't miss out on a great opportunity to also see a large selection of tenders in the Cannes harbour, it's after all the second most important item on a sailing catamaran!

Keep an eye out for your favorite YouTube sailors

In 2023, channels like The Wynns , Sailing Zatara ,  and Sailing Awen  were spotted. These influencers often share valuable insights and personal experiences that can add to your understanding of the boats.

Lunch tip at the Cannes Yachting Festival

If you are into securing a well-planned trip, why not also book the best possible lunch right after the booked boat tours? Enjoy fine French cuisine just around the corner from your favourite catamarans at Bijou Plage Experimental . If you are in Cannes, we recommend O’Key  with a similar setting.

A quick lunch break at Bijou Plage Experimental right on the mediterranean beach with a beautifully decorated table.

The Cannes Yachting Festival 2024 is more than just a boat show—it's an opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of sailing catamarans, discover the latest models, and possibly find your dream boat. With a bit of preparation, including using Catamaran Show  to plan your visit, you can turn this exciting event into a productive and enjoyable experience. Don’t forget to check out last year’s highlights, like this video from the 2023 Cannes Yachting Festival  and The Wynns’ coverage of the event  for a taste of what’s to come!

That's why we have created CatamanShow.com - the boat show in you pocket that covers it all!

course catamaran 2024

The 2024 Around French Island Catamaran Challenge events (AFI) was an outstanding success, and the 2025 event is shaping up to be even bigger and better!

We will be restricting numbers to 70 boats for the 2025 event (no prizes for 71st!) so you need to save the date right now and put a circle around 15 Feb 2025 (with resail on 16 Feb 2025 if required). The 2024 event had an amazing level of excitement and energy supported by an awesome team of volunteers and we are expecting the 2025 race to be sold out.  If you are wondering what it all looked like in 2024 then feast your eyes on the video production above or else have a look at the teaser below which shows the excitement from the 2022 event, or have a read of 2022 second place Gary Maskiell's account here !

In 2025, there will $11,350 in prize money generously provided by Australian Air Safaris, this will be spread over 3 divisions with prizes for the first 3 places in each division, as well as, numerous spot prizes.

The event is scheduled for a 12.00 pm start on Saturday Feb 15, 2025 with a resail day scheduled for Sunday Feb 16, 2025 (if required). The race averages approximately 4 to 5 hours duration (wind dependent) with the most direct route being approximately 70 kms. However, the data from the 2022 GPS Trackers showed most boats sailed roughly 100kms, making this race a marathon plus! Repeat: it is a marathon, not a sprint! This type of race tests the skill level as well as endurance. The race exposes boats and crews to many and varied weather conditions with anything possible, from a drifter to heavy weather with consequent stormy wind and water conditions. Combine this with strong multi directional tides and current, variable water depths and exotic land/sea/wind conditions around French Island and within Westernport Bay means all boats and crews will be tested to the max!

Race conditions and rules are conducted under the guidance of Australia Sailing via RACING RULES of SAILING . All boats must comply with AS Safety requirements for " Off the beach sailing " and are subject to audit on the day of the race. All entries must be class legal and comply with class rules. So what are you waiting for – put this date in your diary NOW and remember to keep an eye on the COWES YACHT CLUB Web site ( www.cowesyachtclub.com/afi ) for further details to be released soon.

RACE HISTORY The history of this signature Cowes Yacht Club event goes back decades. The Isle of Wight hotel was once the original sponsor—with the winner having their name engraved on the "Isle of Wight" trophy and receiving some samples of the iconic pub's wares to celebrate their win. This trophy is still in use today, and sailors are very keen to add their name alongside other French Island legends.

In previous years the event was run as a fun event giving local catamaran sailors the chance to circumnavigate the historic French Island in company and safety. In 2022 this all changed.

With a total prize pool of $10,000, the use of GPS monitors on every competing boat and a fleet of over 10 support / rescue boats all controlled via radio from the Cowes Yacht Club tower ensures the event has become safer and more competitive. The use of the GPS monitors even allows support staff and families to watch the race live from the comfort of Cowes Yacht Club and treat themselves to a coffee (or something a little stronger) while the sailor’s battle it out on the race course.

The 2022, 2023 & 2024 races attracted sailors from 4 States with numerous state and national champions with a number of crews having international experience, thus ensuring a very high level of competition. The vibe is even more exciting for 2025, with a number of classes indicating even more support for the 2025 race.

The 2025 event will have 3 Divisions (similar to the 2023 race). The difference being the 1st, 2nd and 3rd finishers in each division being in the money (subject to numbers in each division). This will ensure an even greater level of competition within each division and a wider spread of prizes throughout the fleet.

Step inside a luxury Panama City resort attracting business travelers with its exclusive, Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and high-end dining

  • Panama City's wealthy Santa Maria neighborhood is home to the city's only five-star resort.
  • The Santa Maria Hotel is known for its Jack Nicklaus-designed golf course and high-end dining.
  • I spent a night in the hotel, enjoying the property's pool and amenities.

Insider Today

The manicured golf course, chlorinated pool, and crisp white tablecloths differed drastically from the overgrown island I had spent the past three nights on .

But then again, I was no longer in Panama's Gulf of Chiriqui. I was in Santa Maria, one of Panama City's most expensive neighborhoods .

And if there's one thing you can expect, it's pristine luxury. To celebrate my final night in Panama, I spent a night at the five-star Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort .

Santa Maria is one of Panama City's wealthiest neighborhoods.

Duncan McGowan, the president of  Punta Pacifica Realty , told Business Insider that there are two neighborhoods Panama's wealthy residents gravitate toward.

The first is the Ocean Reef Islands , a private neighborhood built on two manmade islands in the Pacific. The second is Santa Maria.

McGowan said that while Santa Maria is a relatively new neighborhood in Panama City, it's quickly become one of the city's most expensive places to live.

That's partly due to its proximity to the Costa del Este neighborhood, which is filled with international businesses and offices. McGowan said many people who work in Costa del Este live in Santa Maria.

The neighborhood has everything from single-family homes to impressive condominiums designed by Fendi. While real estate can range in price, McGowan said property typically ranges between $3,000 and $4,700 a square meter.

At the edge of the neighborhood is the five-star Santa Maria Hotel, part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection.

Opened in 2018, The Santa Maria Hotel and Golf Resort is a five-star, 182-room hotel.

The hotel has welcomed familiar names like Morgan Freeman and Canada's national soccer team. Due to its location near the airport and Costa del Este, the hotel also attracts plenty of business travelers.

In April, I headed to the property for one final night in Panama.

course catamaran 2024

I originally booked a deluxe king room with city views. The deluxe room, the most basic accommodation at The Santa Maria, cost $340 for one night.

On the afternoon of my stay, bellhops greeted me at the entrance and ushered me to the check-in desk.

course catamaran 2024

An Uber driver dropped me off at the entrance to The Santa Maria, and immediately, I felt like I was stepping inside a tropical oasis.

A centerpiece of lush bromeliads filled the entryway. Tucked in other corners were tropical plants like monsteras and palms.

Staff members waited to check guests in at two ornate wooden reception desks. Here, I was told I received a complimentary upgrade to an executive suite, which typically costs $570 after taxes and fees.

I grabbed my key and headed for the elevator.

I headed to the third floor and stepped inside my suite. Immediately, I was overwhelmed by the room's large size.

course catamaran 2024

I had spent the morning envisioning my night in a standard-sized hotel room. I figured there'd be just enough room for a small mini fridge and coffee maker. If I were lucky, I'd be able to squish my luggage into the corner of one room.

But size was no complaint in the 893-square-foot suite. Two rooms — a living area and a bedroom — made up my expansive home for the night.

The entryway had a half bath and a coffee bar.

course catamaran 2024

I stepped inside a large entryway. Here, I discovered a half bath, which was largely unnecessary for one person. However, it would've been great if I hadn't been alone.

Next to the bathroom was a coffee bar area. Inside the cabinets was a mini fridge, and on top was a coffee maker and some glassware.

At the end of the hallway was a large living area with a couch, chairs, a TV, and a desk.

course catamaran 2024

The living area had enough seating for four people. I stretched out on the couch and eyed the magazines on the coffee stand.

As I flipped through The Business Year's Panama edition, I thought the hotel was clearly appealing to a certain traveler.

The room naturally led to the bedroom area.

course catamaran 2024

The suite's bedroom was accessible through a sliding door. Once again, the room was shockingly large.

At the center of the room was a king-sized bed with a pillowtop mattress and comfy duvet.

The bedroom also had enough space for a dresser, TV, and seating.

course catamaran 2024

To the left of the bed were a chair and a side table. Adjacent to them were the suite's second TV and second dresser.

One wall had large windows with views out onto the property's golf course and pool.

course catamaran 2024

Both rooms in the suite had floor-to-ceiling windows facing the back of The Santa Maria's property.

The blue hues of the pool were contrasted by the vibrant green of the hotel's golf course.

The other wall had two doors leading to a closet and bathroom.

course catamaran 2024

Across from the windows were two more of the suite's rooms. I had a walk-in closet, where I found the third and final dresser.

The other door led the the suite's full bathroom.

The bathroom was the highlight of the space. Inside the enormous room was a rainfall shower, a large bathtub, and a glowing vanity.

course catamaran 2024

The marble bathroom was the most luxurious part of the suite. I could stretch out in the large bathtub or soak underneath the room's rainfall showerhead.

After settling in, I headed downstairs to explore the property's amenities.

course catamaran 2024

The suite had other traditional hotel amenities like a hair dryer, robes, alarm clocks, and access to 24-hour room service.

Guests at The Santa Maria can choose between four bars and restaurants.

course catamaran 2024

The Santa Maria is home to two restaurants, the Mestizo Restaurant, which serves international cuisine, and the fine-dining Grill House FSH & STK.

The hotel is also home to the AQVA Pool Bar and an in-house coffee shop.

While I didn't dine at The Santa Maria, McGowan said Mestizo has earned its reputation as one of the best brunch spots across Panama City. Each Sunday, the hotel offers a brunch spread for $65. And if you can't make it for Sunday brunch, Mestizo often has live jazz performers and other evening events.

And it wouldn't be a resort without a spa.

course catamaran 2024

Guests can book services like massages, facials, body scrubs, and manicures.

Perhaps the largest draw of the hotel is its golf course.

course catamaran 2024

Nicklaus Design, the global golf firm founded by American golfer Jack Nicklaus, was the designer behind the course at The Santa Maria.

The 700-acre space includes 18 holes, a lighted putting green, and a driving range.

The course is available to private members who live in Santa Maria and hotel guests. A two-year membership at the club will set golfers back $10,700 . Or, for the committed golfer, a lifetime membership costs $50,000.

I spent the afternoon lounging by the pool.

course catamaran 2024

While I've never set foot on a golf course, I can confidently say I'm a pro at lounging.

Instead of opting for the green, I headed to the pool. Earlier, the front desk told me the hotel was completely booked, so I was shocked to see only a few others lounging by the pool.

Since I was in one of the city's wealthy neighborhoods, I decided to go for an evening stroll. But my walk was promptly cut short.

course catamaran 2024

As I stepped into Panama's humidity, I expected to go on a long walk admiring the neighborhood's mansions and skyscrapers.

But Santa Maria's residents live in a gated neighborhood, and since the hotel is just outside the gates, I wasn't granted entrance into the rest of the neighborhood.

It seemed like most restaurants, attractions, and landmarks were a drive away.

course catamaran 2024

I did see one new shopping center and the neighborhood's country club, but there weren't many other shops, restaurants, or businesses within walking distance.

So I headed back to the hotel.

course catamaran 2024

Luckily, The Santa Maria had everything you could need for a one-night stay.

The Santa Maria felt like a tropical retreat, and if you're a golfer, it's worth the visit.

course catamaran 2024

While I felt more immersed in Panama's culture and history at other Panama City hotels , The Santa Maria was a relaxing way to end my Panama trip. During my one-night stay, I felt transported to a manicured, luxury property that I never needed to leave.

There were moments I felt far away from Panama City, but thankfully, the city's skyline in the distance was a constant reminder of the beautiful place I had just explored.

U.S. to Seek Attempted Assassination Charge for Trump Golf Course Suspect

Prosecutors disclosed new information in a memo written to persuade a federal judge to detain the suspect indefinitely while he awaits trial.

A white police car with sirens running is blocking off the entrance of the Trump International Golf Club.

By Patricia Mazzei Adam Goldman and Glenn Thrush

Patricia Mazzei reported from West Palm Beach, Fla. Adam Goldman and Glenn Thrush reported from Washington.

The federal government will pursue a charge of attempted assassination against a man accused of lurking with a gun near where former President Donald J. Trump was golfing in Florida last week, prosecutors said in a court hearing on Monday. Among the government’s evidence, they said, was a note the suspect had written suggesting that he had planned the attack.

Such a charge — which prosecutors said they would seek through a grand jury indictment — would carry a maximum possible penalty of life imprisonment.

United States Magistrate Judge Ryon M. McCabe, of the Federal District Court in West Palm Beach, Fla., granted the government’s request on Monday to keep the suspect, Ryan W. Routh, in jail without bond. So far, Mr. Routh has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm as a felon, which carries a penalty of up to 15 years in prison, and with possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number.

Mr. Routh’s defense lawyers had argued that their client was not a flight risk and did not pose a serious threat to the community, but Judge McCabe disagreed.

Read the prosecutors’ detention memo

The court filing included a note that prosecutors said the suspect had written suggesting that he had planned to attack former President Donald J. Trump.

In a statement released by his campaign on Monday, Mr. Trump accused the Justice Department and the F.B.I. of “mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on my life since July.” He called the charges against Mr. Routh “a slap on the wrist” and said, “Let Florida handle the case!”

Last week, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, a Republican, said the state would conduct its own investigation into what happened, characterizing the federal inquiry as insufficiently transparent and perhaps biased against Mr. Trump.

At the court hearing on Monday, which lasted nearly three hours, Mark D. Dispoto, an assistant United States attorney, argued that Mr. Routh had ensconced himself in “nothing short of a sniper’s nest” to target the former president, while Mr. Routh’s federal public defenders extensively questioned the strength of the government’s evidence.

Kristy Militello, one of his two lawyers, said that Mr. Routh’s actions were the “unsophisticated and sort of untrained” work of a man whose writings suggested that he intended the assassination attempt to fail.

Mr. Routh, wearing a dark jail uniform with his blond hair combed back, appeared to closely follow the proceedings, especially when Renee Michelle Sihvola, his other lawyer, cross-examined Christian Hull, an F.B.I. special agent, about the government’s evidence.

According to prosecutors, Mr. Routh, 58, appeared to have surveyed the grounds of the Trump International Golf Club for about a month before his arrest. On Sept. 15, Mr. Routh positioned himself outside the fence near the sixth hole of the course, where at about 1:30 p.m., a Secret Service agent on a golf cart who was scouting one hole ahead of the former president saw part of Mr. Routh’s face and the barrel of his gun.

At the time he was spotted, prosecutors said, Mr. Routh was aligned directly with the sixth hole, with the intention of shooting Mr. Trump from a relatively short distance using a semiautomatic rifle. The rifle, equipped with a scope, was found abandoned at the scene; it had a round in the chamber and a total of 11 rounds loaded. Investigators found Mr. Routh’s fingerprint on duct tape affixing the scope to the weapon.

“This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” Mr. Routh wrote in a note that was placed inside a box that he left at a friend’s house in North Carolina, according to prosecutors.

“I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster,” the note continued. “It is up to you to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”

The friend contacted law enforcement officials and told them about the note three days after Mr. Routh’s arrest.

In the note, prosecutors said, Mr. Routh also wrote that Mr. Trump was unfit to be president. Mr. Routh had left the note at the house several months before the shooting — an indication, they said, that he had been planning the assassination for a long time.

Ms. Sihvola got Mr. Hull, the F.B.I. agent, to identify multiple references in the note to Mr. Routh’s belief that his plan would likely fail; those references were in parts of the note that prosecutors had not included in their memo asking the judge to detain Mr. Routh indefinitely.

Mr. Hull also acknowledged under questioning by Ms. Sihvola that he was not aware of any footage from surveillance or other cameras showing Mr. Routh at the golf course or with the rifle.

Mr. Hull also disclosed that another handwritten note had been found perhaps 15 feet from the rifle. That note, he said, was addressed to The New York Times.

Mr. Dispoto called the second note “ancillary” and pointed out that it was not part of the government’s filing. Mr. Routh was interviewed by The Times last year about his efforts to recruit foreign fighters to Ukraine.

The developments on Monday painted the clearest picture to date of an itinerant and impoverished building contractor, with no apparent ties to Florida, who repeatedly professed his willingness to die defending Ukraine.

Mr. Routh’s lawyers portrayed their client as dedicated to the cause of democracy in Ukraine and Taiwan, and added that, even after his arrest, he has the support of his adult children and siblings. He lived with a partner in Hawaii for the past eight years and spent “the better half of the past decade,” Ms. Militello said, “as a law-abiding citizen.”

Prosecutors noted Mr. Routh’s extensive criminal history, including a 2002 felony charge in North Carolina for possessing a weapon of mass death and destruction. Court documents described the weapon as a “binary explosive with a 10-inch detonation and a blasting cap.” Mr. Routh was convicted and placed on supervised probation for 60 months.

Investigators who searched the black Nissan Xterra S.U.V. that Mr. Routh was driving on Sept. 15, found “a handwritten list of dates in August, September and October 2024 and venues where the former president had appeared or was expected to be present,” according to the prosecutors’ memo.

Agents also found six cellphones — including one that contained a Google search of how to travel from Palm Beach County to Mexico — as well as 12 pairs of gloves, a Hawaii driver’s license in Mr. Routh’s name and a passport.

Judge McCabe cited the Google search and Mr. Routh’s passport as evidence of his potential flight risk, and his criminal record, his apparent staking out of the golf course and the seriousness of the existing firearms charges against him as evidence of his potential danger to the community.

“The government has met its burden” to warrant detention, Judge McCabe said.
