150923. Rocinante Superyacht. Greg Martin.

An £80million superyacht, owned by an American billionaire, has moored up in Cornwall .

Rocinante, which is 258ft long, arrived in Falmouth Harbour on Thursday 14 September, making everybody else's boats look small in comparison.

Built in 2008 by the Lurssen shipyard in Germany, it was formerly known as TV and Madsummer, before being bought by games developer Gabe Newell.

The billionaire, who is president of the gaming company Valve, was reported to have a net-worth of $4.3billion in 2023.

The luxury vessel costs between £4million and £8million to run, but was renamed by the tech mogul after a less expensive mode of transport — Don Quixote's horse.

Rocinante was in good company this week, with another billionaire's £40million superyacht not far away.

Game Changer is owned by Hong Kong based billionaire heiress Karen Lo.

She was spotted conducting sea trials in Falmouth on 15 September as part of work at Pendennis Shipyard.

Game Changer was initially designed to be a support vessel to allow owners of superyachts to carry more equipment.

But she was later adapted and upgraded to become a superyacht in her own right.

The 230ft Dutch-built vessel not only has a helicopter landing pad, but also a submarine and custom dive centre.

Nahlin visits the River Dart

Yachting World

  • July 19, 2010

One of the world's finest privately owned yachts - understood to be owned by vacuum cleaner entrepreneur James Dyson - was a visitor to the River Dart last weekend

Nahlin

This is Nahlin, recently re-built by Blohm + Voss in Germany and pictured last week end on the River Dart in Devon. The 300ft long yacht was originally built for Lady Annie Henrietta Yule in 1930 by the John Brown shipyard and was later owned by the Romanian Royal Family. She was also chartered in the 1930s by King Edward VIII and used by him and Mrs Wallis Simpson.

Nahlin was ‘discovered’ some years ago lying on the River Danube by yachting historian Dr. William Collier, who is the owner of the G.L. Watson naval architect firm responsible for Nahlin’s original design. The company has done much of the cataloguing and re-design work necessary to turn Nahlin into a yacht with a modern inventory.

Yacht broker Nicholas Edmiston arranged to have the vessel, which was originally steam-powered, shipped first to Falmouth, then to Liverpool and finally to Germany where the re-fit work has been underway for some years.

It has been reported that Nahlin is now owned by James Dyson of vacuum cleaner fame.

People in Cornwall have been treated to an incredible sight this week as some of the world’s most spectacular superyachts and classic yachts have been racing close to shore. Gathering in Falmouth for the first event of the Richard Mille Cup, twelve classic yachts have been thrilling spectators on land and sea with views of exhilarating action in and around Falmouth Bay from the racing fleets of Schooners and Cutters crewed by some of the best sailors in the world.

Described as the “most beautiful” Classic Yacht Regatta, the Richard Mille Cup began in Falmouth this week, and ends in France on June 15. Three days of inshore racing in Falmouth Bay from Monday to Wednesday will be followed by a passage race to Dartmouth, Devon and coastal racing in Cowes, Isles of Wight before the grand finale in Le Havre.

“What a wonderful time for the Port of Falmouth, with the Royal Cornwall Yacht Club hosting the amazing Richard Mille Cup once more in 2024,” says the RCYC’s new Commodore Richard Pugh. “These truly magnificent and iconic yachts generate excitement and interest for sailors and ‘land-lubbers’ alike.

“In these very early days of my tenure as Commodore of the RCYC and on behalf of us all at the Club I extend a warm welcome to owners, skippers, crews and spectators in Falmouth. Have a wonderful regatta.”

Captain of sunken Lynch family yacht declines to answer investigators' questions

PALERMO, Italy (Reuters) - The captain of the luxury yacht owned by the family of British tech magnate Mike Lynch that sank off Sicily last week declined to respond to prosecutors during questioning on Tuesday, one of his lawyers said.

James Cutfield, a 51-year old New Zealand national, was put under investigation on Monday by Italian prosecutors.

"The captain exercised his right to remain silent for two fundamental reasons," lawyer Giovanni Rizzuti told reporters.

"First, he's very worn out. Second, we were appointed only on Monday and for a thorough and correct defence case we need to acquire a set of data that at the moment we don't have."

Lynch and six other people were killed when the British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-foot) yacht, capsized and sank on Aug. 19 within minutes of being hit by a pre-dawn storm while anchored off northern Sicily.

Being placed under investigation in Italy does not imply guilt and does not mean formal charges will necessarily follow. It is still unclear whether other crew members or other people will also be placed under investigation.

Prosecutors said their investigation would take time, and would require the wreck to be salvaged from the sea. The Bayesian is currently lying on its right side, at a depth of around 50 metres.

The coastguard is conducting activities to monitor the environmental conditions in the area where the yacht sank, it said in a statement on Tuesday.

"At the moment we don't register any leaks from tanks and there are no traces of oil pollution," it said.

Seven bodies have been found after a superyacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel named Bayesian when it got into difficulty in the early hours of Monday, with 15 people rescued.

Here's what we know about the sinking of the luxury vessel so far.

Seven people missing after British-flagged yacht capsizes in tornado off coast of Italy

What might have caused the sinking?

The British-flagged luxury vessel, named Bayesian, capsized at around 4.30am local time on Monday morning off Palermo, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

It sank in as little as 60 seconds with 22 people on board, 12 passengers and a crew of 10, according to the Italian coastguard.

Waterspouts, essentially tornados that form over water, were seen as powerful winds battered the area overnight, local media said.

dyson family yacht

The yacht may have sunk faster with all the doors open due to the hot weather, Sailing Today magazine editor Sam Jefferson has said.

"I imagine all the doors were open because it was hot, so there were enough hatches and doors open that it filled with water very quickly and sank like that," he said.

Official pictures show air conditioning units in several of the rooms, however, which could counter the suggestion open windows caused the vessel to sink faster.

The huge mast is also likely to have played a role, he added.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts typically occur during thunderstorms and can develop very rapidly, within minutes.

Their spin generally reaches wind speeds between 75-200mph, but can reach as high as 300mph.

A waterspout is formed during a storm in the Mediterranean Sea, October 1, 2018. REUTERS/Alkis Konstantinidis

They can travel at about 10-20mph typically but can reach greater speeds, making them difficult to avoid - especially in something as slow-moving as a yacht.

Matthew Schanck, chair of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, called the reports of a tornado or waterspout "rare" and "quite alarming".

"The vessel was at anchor in a recognised anchorage," Mr Schanck said.

"Depending on wind direction and the state of the sea, this informs the captain whether it is a safe area to anchor or not. There was nothing that was too concerning, for my eye. All in all, the captain used the information they had to make a safe call."

Who owns the yacht?

The yacht belonged to the family of British tech tycoon Mike Lynch. He was confirmed to have died after rescuers found his body on Thursday. Mr Lynch was on holiday with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, who is still missing, and his wife Angela Bacares, who was rescued.

Mr Lynch, 59, was known as the " British Bill Gates " and has been in the headlines in recent months over a high-profile fraud case.

dyson family yacht

In June, a US jury cleared him of all charges, which were related to the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard (HP). The yacht trip is believed to have been a celebration of the end of Mr Lynch's legal troubles.

HP accused him of deliberately overstating the value of the company before it was acquired by the American tech giant.

Mr Lynch was extradited to the US to face trial in May last year and spent 13 months under house arrest in San Francisco as he awaited trial on 17 charges of conspiracy and wire fraud brought by the US Department of Justice - which were later reduced to 15 charges. He always denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted.

Who was on board when the boat sank?

The passengers were largely British and American, with crew members were from New Zealand, South Africa, and Canada.

Charlotte Golunski was among the Britons rescued. Her LinkedIn profile says she is a partner at Mr Lynch's firm Invoke Capital and has worked there since 2012.

Charlotte Golunski

Speaking after the ordeal, Ms Golunski told Italian media that she lost her daughter Sofia for "two seconds" amid the "fury" of the sea but was able to retrieve her. She said she held the infant above the waves until the lifeboat was ready.

"Many people screamed. Luckily the lifeboat inflated and 11 of us were able to get on board," she told ANSA.

The girl's father James Emsley also survived, according to Sicily's civil protection agency.

Also on board were Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of investment bank Morgan Stanley, his wife Judy Bloomer, a top US lawyer Chris Morvillo, who worked on Mr Lynch's criminal case, and his wife Neda Morvillo. Divers confirmed on Thursday that their bodies had been recovered.

The yacht's captain James Cutfield survived, along with South African crew members Leah Randall and Katja Chicken.

Recaldo Thomas, a Canadian-Antiguan chef who was working on the boat, was the first to be found dead, the Italian Coastguard confirmed to Sky News.

During rescue efforts, divers saw "corpses through the portholes" of the wreck as they recovered the body of a man at a depth of 50m (164ft), according to Salvo Cocina, the head of the Civil Protection of Sicily.

What do we know about the vessel?

The Bayesian is owned by a company controlled by Mr Lynch's wife.

It was known for its unusual 72.3m (246ft) single mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminium - and shared its name with the statistical method Mr Lynch's Autonomy software was based on.

It was built by Italian company Perini Navi in 2008 and last refitted in 2020.

It was listed for rent for up to €195,000 (£166,000) a week, according to online charter sites.

The luxury vessel , which was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons, could accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites.

It won a string of awards for its design, according to online specialist yacht sites.

Mr Schanck, of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council, said the vessel would have been equipped with "high standard" life-saving appliances and radio communications.

He added the yacht would have met all international standards and UK Maritime Coastguard Agency regulations before its voyage.

It was previously named Salute, or "health" in Italian, when it flew under a Dutch flag. Its minimalist interior featured light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions on charter sites.

What were its last movements?

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking site VesselFinder.

The Bayesian previously travelled to other parts of Sicily before its last sighting off the coast of the port of Porticello.

The 1930 steam yacht Nahlin was completely restored at Blohm + Voss (B+V), a German yacht building firm. The yacht has been refitted with new diesel engines and period-correct paneling and moldings.

Sir James Dyson, who is best known as the inventor of the Dual Cyclone bagless vacuum cleaner, has refurbished the classic yacht and has re-launched it. Nahlin was originally designed by G.L. Watson for a British heiress and was later owned by the Romanian Royal Family. The 1,574 ton Nahlin, which is 91.4m in length and can hold 58 crew and 351 passengers, was built for Lady Annie Henrietta Yule in 1930.

The historic super yacht was involved in the abdication of King Edward VIII, and has spent much of the last 70 years as a floating restaurant on the river Danube until it was reportedly bought by Dyson. It is believed that Dyson has shelled out GBP25 million ($38.7 million) for the retrofit project.

Vacuum billionaire Sir James Dyson may well have scarpered to Cornwall to escape the fallout from ‘Textgate’ as his 300ft yacht has been spotted in Falmouth harbour.

One of Britain’s most prominent businessmen has been caught up in what the Labour Party has called “new Tory sleaze” after texts between him and Prime Minister Boris Johnson about tax and the provision of ventilators were made public.

Mr Johnson has said he will publish his text messages and “makes absolutely no apology” for the exchanges with Mr Dyson promising to “fix” tax status for the firm to help build ventilators.

Number 10 sources have accused the PM’s former senior advisor Dominic Cummings of leaking the text messages.

A trip to sunny Cornwall can fix most problems and this might be what Mr Dyson is hoping as his luxury yacht Nahlin is currently in Falmouth , moored on the harbour’s Cross Roads buoy.

Launched in 1930, she is one of the last large steam yachts constructed in the UK having been built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank and was constructed immediately before the RMS Queen Mary.

In 1936 Nahlin was chartered by King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson for a cruise in the Adriatic Sea, photos from which sparked rumours of the impending abdication. Informal photographs of Edward and Simpson on board together during the cruise were not published in Britain but became front-page news in America.

The yacht was then bought by King Carol of Romania in 1937 and later became a floating restaurant in the country.

Sir James purchased the yacht from Sir Anthony Bamford, chairman of JCB, in 2006. The inventor spent five years comprehensively rebuilding and restoring it and the ship was recommissioned in 2010 as the Nahlin and registered again in Glasgow, Scotland.

The name Nahlin is taken from a Native American word meaning "fleet of foot" and the yacht has a figurehead depicting a Native American wearing a feathered headdress beneath the bowsprit.

She was originally furnished with six en-suite staterooms for guests, a gymnasium, a ladies' sitting room with sea views on three sides, and a library.

About Sir James Dyson –

Once you learn about Sir James Dyson, the inventor worth $13.5 billion , it’s easy to see what drew him to the Nahlin Yacht. This entrepreneur has devoted his life to solving problems and developing products—so a straightforward superyacht would hardly appeal to his maverick nature. The founder and Chairman of Dyson, which now employs more than 5,000 engineers worldwide, attended art school in London and doesn’t even have an engineering degree. As a child with a passion for competitive long-distance running, Dyson attended Gresham’s School, followed by the Byam Shaw School of Art, before studying architectural design at the Royal College of Art.

The Nahlin, pictured in 1936.

From Edward VIII to James Dyson: the yacht that tells a tale of British wealth

Ian Jack

The fortunes of industry and a handful of ultra-rich individuals are woven through the history of the Nahlin

I n the early years of this century, soon after he began moving production of his bagless vacuum cleaner from Wiltshire to south-east Asia , James Dyson bought a superb yacht. The Nahlin is exemplary in the beauty of its lines and instructive in its history, though how much of this history Dyson understands or relishes is hard to know. Despite spending a fortune (at least £25m) on its restoration, Dyson has never talked publicly about his yacht, no more than he has about his purchase of Singapore’s most expensive flat (£43m) and its sale soon after, at a loss. For a time, a kind of omertà prevailed about the vessel’s ownership among its team of restorers, though to own and care for such an elegant piece of naval architecture would surely be no shame.

What Dyson certainly knows is that it was on the Nahlin that King Edward VIII and Mrs Wallis Simpson shed any discretion and “came out” as a couple – a relationship reported across the world, though not at the time in Britain – precipitating the crisis that ended with the king’s abdication a few months later, in December 1936. “The cruise of the Nahlin” became an inevitable chapter in any telling of the event, though how the king came to be aboard such a mysteriously named vessel tended to be overlooked. In fact, the name is said to have Native American origins, and reportedly means “fleet of foot” – the yacht’s figurehead wears a chieftain’s headdress – and the king was aboard because the Foreign Office, worried by social unrest in France, had warned against his original plan to rent a villa there.

So instead he rented the Nahlin, to avoid the fuss that a voyage in the royal yacht, the Victoria and Albert, would create and perhaps also because the Nahlin, commissioned only six years earlier, appealed to his appetite for cocktail modernity. Fuss, however, was unavoidable. At Šibenik, the Dalmatian port where the king and Mrs Simpson boarded the yacht, an exuberant crowd of 20,000 turned up and (thanks to reports in the American press) showed as much interest in her as in him; at sea, two Royal Navy destroyers, the Grafton and the Glowworm, accompanied the Nahlin wherever she went – a leisurely August progress down the Adriatic, through the Corinth canal to the Greek islands, and eventually to Istanbul. The “nanny-boats”, as Lady Diana Cooper called them; she and a few other prominent society figures were also aboard, as well as a crew around 60-strong.

The Nahlin, moored off Falmouth, Cornwall, April 2021.

Of course, the term yacht is misleading. No sails have ever been involved. The Nahlin, like its bland modern equivalents, was a yacht only in the sense that its sole purpose was its owner’s pleasure, the owner being in this case a Lady Yule. Launched in 1930 from the Clydebank shipyard of John Brown & Co – builder of celebrated liners such as Cunard’s two Queens – it measures 300ft in length and was originally powered by four steam turbines. Characteristically of the steam yacht, of which the Nahlin was among the very last examples, its hull preserves elements of the sailing ship, with a curved clipper bow and a counter stern, each stretching well beyond the waterline. The shape and colour of steam yachts – white hull, cream funnel – made people think of swans. Their costs and months of idleness meant they were an indulgence that only the richest magnates on either side of the Atlantic could afford: JP Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Sir Thomas Lipton.

And Lady Yule? She was thought to be the richest widow in England. How had she come by her money? Jute, was the short answer. A longer one involves a story of British innovation and industrial expansion overseas that Dyson might recognise, beginning in the 1820s when Dundee manufacturers began to look for an alternative to hemp in the making of sacking, rope and sailcloth. Jute was cheap and reliably available from Bengal in British India, but it was tough and brittle and broke easily when it was spun or woven. After years of experiment, it was successfully made pliable by the application of whale oil, of which Dundee as a whaling port had no shortage.

The demand for jute fabric and jute rope boomed, and Dundee enjoyed a near monopoly until the 1870s, when British industrialists began to open jute mills in Bengal itself because, as economic historian Morris D Morris has pointed out, “jute manufacturing was not a complicated process [and] cheap labour was a very great advantage”. Bengal had five jute mills in 1870 and 69 jute mills in 1914, as cheaper Indian-made jute conquered foreign markets previously served by Dundee, and exports of jute cloth from India grew 272 times over the same period; even better was to come with the first world war, when the word “sandbag” must have sounded like a ringing cash register in the inner ear of every Indian jute trader.

The Yule family benefited enormously. Annie Henrietta (Lady) Yule was the daughter of Andrew Yule, the son of a small-town draper in Scotland who arrived in Kolkata (then Calcutta) in 1863 as an agent representing several British firms, and whose family eventually owned tea estates, coalmines, cotton and flour mills, railways, and 2,400 square miles of productive land – as well as the jute mills that Andrew Yule’s nephew and successor, Sir David Yule, had taken an especial interest in expanding. Sir David was a shy workaholic who rarely left Kolkata. Aged 42, he married another Yule, his cousin Annie Henrietta. When he died in 1928, soon after ordering his steam yacht, the Times described him as“one of the wealthiest men, if not the wealthiest man, in the country”.

Where did it all go? Lady Yule and her daughter Gladys made a long and expensive world cruise in the Nahlin in the early 1930s. She invested heavily and sometimes unwisely in the British film industry; she opened a stud farm. She had, in the words of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, “strong religious opinions, a sharp tongue, and imperious habits”. Her attempt to force teetotalism on the Nahlin’ s crew was probably not a success. At any rate she sold the ship to King Carol II of Romania in 1937, after which the Nahlin disappeared from the map of British interests – missing, presumed dead – until an English yacht broker, Nicholas Edmiston, discovered it moored in the Danube as a floating restaurant in the 1990s. It passed briefly through the ownership of another Brexit-supporting tycoon, Sir Anthony Bamford, before Dyson bought it in 2006.

This week, thanks to the wonder of digital ship location, I traced the yacht’s present whereabouts to the Blohm+Voss shipyard in Hamburg; it had reached there from the Caribbean via Gibraltar and Falmouth. Blohm+Voss spent millions of Dyson’s money when the yacht was first restored and re-engined, and it may be there now for its annual overhaul. The shipyard is old and distinguished, and still fills the harbour with the sounds of building and repair work. They even build luxury yachts there; the clients include Roman Abramovich and Vladimir Putin.

Nothing remains of the Nahlin’s birthplace at Clydebank, apart from a large crane that stands useless at the river’s edge. Ships, like bagless vacuum cleaners and jute, are made elsewhere.

Family Office: A Look Inside Dyson’s Family Office

James Dyson, the former richest man in the UK, has a fortune of $15 billion (approximately 107.5 billion yuan), which comes from his shares in Dyson Holdings. To manage his vast assets, he established a single-family office called Weybourne Holdings. Despite the surge of family offices that cater to the needs of global ultra-high-net-worth individuals over the past 20 years, few can match the scale of Weybourne Holdings. Today, "Family Office Insights" takes you into Dyson's family office, Weybourne Holdings.

Like many super-rich individuals around the world, Dyson has strengthened management and preserved his wealth by creating a family office. The family office, Weybourne Holdings Pte Ltd, helps the Dyson family supervise everything from investments (including buying and selling foreign currencies on their behalf) to private jets to personal security. The family office was established in 2013 and was formerly known as Holkham One Limited and Holkham Group Limited.

Its headquarters are located in Singapore, and in addition to Dyson Holdings and its subsidiary Dyson, it also includes Dyson Agriculture. In addition, Weybourne is also involved in financial investments and commercial real estate.

Among them, the real estate investments in the UK include: a 300-acre Georgian manor in Gloucestershire's Doddington Park; a property in Chelsea, London; and a series of properties in Fitzrovia known as The Village, etc.

Weybourne's main subsidiaries in the UK include:

• Weybourne Limited • Weybourne Finance Limited • Weybourne Properties Limited • Dodington Commercial Properties Limited • New Beeswax Dyson Farming Limited (owns about 35,000 acres of land, including many farms. Dyson has invested heavily in purchasing farmland in Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, and Gloucestershire, etc.; adopts sustainable farming methods, agriculture + technology)

• Weybourne Investment Nominees Limited According to relevant registration documents, as of May 2019, Weybourne has assets of £4.5 billion. The company no longer reports financial conditions and is active in real estate, agriculture, and public markets.

Weybourne's main asset income comes from dividends from Dyson Holdings. In 2018, Weybourne received transferred capital and dividends of £300 million from Dyson Holdings, and in 2019, it was £464 million. At that time, Dyson Holdings stated that it would move its headquarters from the UK to Singapore to focus on the Southeast Asian market.

image

In 2020, Dyson Holdings saw a 12% increase in profits to £797 million, with revenue growing by 5.7% to £5.7 billion. The company also paid a £400 million dividend to Weybourne. During this period, Weybourne also received £200 million from Dyson Holdings and an additional £700 million through a share transfer in January 2021.

In 2021, Dyson Holdings paid another £1 billion ($1.1 billion) to Weybourne. In addition, Weybourne received an additional £500 million or more through further dividends, which may be allocated to his business interests, art, and charitable causes.

Richard Murphy, a professor of accounting practice at the Sheffield University Management School, commented on this behavior: "In fact, the family is diversifying their interests."

According to foreign media reports, as of 2022, Dyson has transferred about £4.7 billion (S$7.7 billion) to his single family office. Paul Wester, co-founder of family office headhunter Agreus Group, said: "They are taking a lot of assets out of the operating business, making this entity a professional investment department. They are very diversified."

Weybourne currently has about 70 employees worldwide, which is about 25% more than in 2019. It recently posted job advertisements, requiring at least six positions to be recruited in southern England (where most of the company's employees are located).

The family office is managed by James Bucknall, a former British military officer born in 1958, who is responsible for managing family affairs, while 57-year-old former fund manager Bjorn Thelander will serve as the Chief Investment Officer.

Bjorn Thelander has previously handled a series of financial issues for the Rausing family's Tetra Pak packaging group and later provided consulting and advice to high-net-worth individuals.

In 2020, Weybourne invested in the WestRiver mezzanine loan co-investment fund.

01 Single office Weybourne Holdings

In January 2019, Dyson relocated its headquarters from Malmesbury in the southwest of England to Singapore to meet the needs of its growing business in Asia. At the same time, it established Weybourne Services Singapore Pte in Singapore and recruited IT and financial services personnel.

Weybourne hired analyst and multi-asset investment manager Brandon Foo, who previously worked at Citigroup. Kelvin Wu, who was also hired, had previously worked at International SOS, a health and safety services company, helping to supervise insurance business.

Additionally, according to documents submitted to the Accounting and Corporate Regulatory Authority of Singapore, Swiss private bank Lombard Odier serves as the private banker for Weybourne, providing relevant services.

image

Dyson mainly raises funds through dividends and transferring equity to a Singapore holding company. The Singapore holding company does not disclose consolidated performance. Documents show that Weybourne transferred Dyson's main real estate and agricultural business shares from Singapore to the UK at the end of 2021, with a transaction value of £616.8 million.

The transfer of shares may be tax-driven. Mark Davies, a tax advisor in the UK who serves super-rich individuals, said of the stock transaction, "He treats the family office as a piggy bank to collect excess income."

In addition, media reports have shown that Dyson has paid a total of £600 million in dividends to its Singapore family office twice, becoming the largest expenditure of the company that year. Then, through equity transfer by Dyson, he injected £700 million into the Singapore family office. A total of £1.3 billion (S$2.4 billion), accounting for about 6.86% of the Dyson family's assets.

Singapore, as a popular place for family offices, has many advantages, including good privacy and security, and favorable tax policies. For example, the UK income tax rate for amounts over £150,000 (about $180,000) is 45%, while the Singapore income tax rate for amounts over $320,000 is 22%.

"Weybourne can almost become a boutique representative for managing personal assets," said Tayyab Mohamed, another co-founder of Agreus Group. "It is ranked the highest among family offices."

Although Dyson Holdings and Weybourne have expanded their business in Singapore, and Dyson even once wanted to settle in Singapore, including buying a super penthouse at Wallich Residence for S$73.8 million in June 2019, and a high-quality detached house for more than S$41 million in July 2019.

However, only one year later, in 2020, Dyson sold the super penthouse at Wallich Residence and moved his residence back to the UK in 2021.

As for why he moved back to the UK, according to foreign media reports, when Dyson moved its company to Singapore in 2019, it was criticized by British lawmakers. Before that, the Dyson family and its family business were major taxpayers in the UK. In 2018, Dyson contributed £103 million in taxes to the UK.

In March 2020, then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson texted Dyson, saying that if Dyson's employees could come to the UK to manufacture ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic, they would not have to pay extra taxes. The ventilator project cost £20 million, and staff from the UK and Singapore worked "around the clock" to manufacture ventilators. However, the project was eventually not carried out.

Although Dyson has moved his residence back to the UK, Singapore remains the headquarters and group focus of Dyson Holdings. The executive team of Dyson Holdings is still located in Singapore, which is the center of the company's sales and manufacturing business.

02 "Love-Hate Entanglements" with Singapore

In 2002, Dyson established the James Dyson Foundation in the UK to support design and engineering education and operates in locations such as the UK, the US, and Japan.

The foundation aims to inspire young people to study engineering and become engineers by encouraging students to think differently. It supports engineering education in schools and universities, as well as medical and scientific research in collaboration with charitable organizations.

image

In May 2014, the foundation announced a donation of 8 million pounds to create a technology center at the University of Cambridge.

The following March, the foundation also pledged to donate 12 million pounds to Imperial College London to purchase the Post Office building on Exhibition Road from the Science Museum. Imperial College will open the Dyson School of Design Engineering in this building and launch a new four-year Master's degree program in Design Engineering.

The foundation supports the work of young designers through the James Dyson Award, an international design award that "celebrates, encourages, and inspires the next generation of design engineers." It operates in 20 countries and is aimed at recent graduates in the fields of product design, industrial design, and engineering.

The foundation also supports the development of design and technology schools around the world, as well as educational partnerships. The Dyson business unit has agreed to invest 31 million pounds annually in educational institutions for five years.

In June 2019, the foundation announced a donation of 18.75 million pounds to Dyson's alma mater, Gresham's, to build a new Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) building.

In addition, Dyson is also a trustee of the James and Deirdre Dyson Trust. The foundation is entirely self-funded and does not accept external donations, mainly supporting charitable projects related to the arts, healthcare, education, and sports.

03 James Dyson Foundation

Weybourne's operating profit margin of nearly 20% is not far from that of Apple. Like Apple, Dyson Holdings also follows a high-end and fashionable path. Dyson founded Dyson Technology in 1991 and opened a research center and factory in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, in June 1993.

In September 2017, Dyson announced plans to produce an electric car, which was scheduled to be launched in 2020. He personally invested 2 billion pounds and assembled a team of more than 400 people for the project, but it ultimately ended in failure. After abandoning the electric car project, Dyson focused more on robotics and machine learning.

Of course, Dyson Holdings is just an important part of Dyson's business empire. Outside of business, in 1999, he also acquired Domaine des Rabelles, an estate and winery located near Vallon de Rabelles and Tourtour in France.

In his private life, Dyson owns the super luxurious yacht Nahlin, which is 91 meters (299 feet) long and ranked 36th in the 2013 global top 100 yacht survey. In addition, he also owns two Gulfstream G650 (G-VIOF), Gulfstream G650ER (G-GSVI) private jets, and an AugustaWestland AW-139 helicopter.

Dyson's wife is the famous artist and carpet designer Deirdre Hindmarsh, and they have two sons and one daughter together.

image

James Dyson (center), his wife Deirdre, and their children Emily and Jack

Among the three children, only Jack Dyson followed in his father's footsteps, establishing his own lighting company since 2003 and integrating it into the family business. In 2013, he became a non-executive director along with his brother Sam Dyson, who is a musician and producer, which solidified his position as the heir of Dyson Holdings.

Sam Dyson was a songwriter and lead guitarist for the independent band Chemists, and later founded his own record label, Distiller Records. Their daughter, Emily Dyson, runs a fashion boutique in London called Couverture & The Garbstore. The daily attire of her father and brother is almost entirely designed by her and her husband.

04 The Dyson Family

Dyson's three children (from left to right) Jack, Emily, and Sam

In terms of estate planning, Dyson's three descendants were bequeathed a total of 45 million pounds worth of shares in the family business, which is a departure from the trend of entrepreneurs donating large sums to charities and leaving almost nothing to their children. According to documents submitted to Companies House, Dyson's children acquired this wealth through a transaction to repurchase their father's company shares. This transaction occurred before the capital gains tax on such transactions was increased from 10% to 18%.

In response to this, a company spokesperson said, "Over the past 35 years, this family has been involved in the company's work and has supported the company through difficult times. It is natural for James to want to take care of their future."

Dyson's generous provision for his descendants contrasts sharply with other well-known entrepreneurs, including Bill Gates, who has stated that he will leave 35 billion pounds of Microsoft assets to charities rather than to his children. Dragon's Den star Duncan Bannatyne plans to donate his entire 310 million pounds worth of assets to charity.

In addition to succession planning, Dyson Holdings will also remain independent and will not go public or be sold when its founder retires. Dyson has publicly stated, "The beauty of a family business is that you worry about whether the product is right, rather than any investors with short-term perspectives or other people's ideas. I don't want to be a public company. We can think very long-term and develop technologies that may take years to realize. We can be patient."

The Firestone family on board Tamsen

Siblings at sea

The Firestone family has owned Tamsen since 2007. Sisters Carolyn and Lena recall the pleasures of growing up sailing on this remarkable boat.

“We have a very close, extended family that includes many brothers, sisters, cousins, nieces and nephews with whom we often travel. Our father, Robert, started his boating life before we were born, with Vltava. By the time we were born in the 1980s, our father had Tamara. When I was three days old, I flew across the Atlantic with my mother and joined the boat in the Mediterranean. So I literally grew up sailing. Every winter we’d spend at least a month on the boat and every summer we’d spend three months aboard. Sailing was more than a vacation, it was a way of life. When I was eight years old, I was standing four-hour watches. We sailed to Alaska when I was nine. My sister and I helped cook and clean. There was a whole bunch of us on the boat, camping out, sleeping on sofas and on the floor, everywhere — siblings, cousins and close friends. Our family sailing trips meant we were all in it together and we were all part of the crew.

We have had two sailing yachts, both called Tamsen. Our current Tamsen, spearheaded by our brother Steve and named for our mother (his stepmother), was custom-built – our boat was designed specifically for our big, extended family. For instance, we needed large communal dining spaces. Also, our galley is on the main deck instead of below deck because we all like to cook together.

While Tamsen certainly is luxurious and beautiful, our life aboard is not what one imagines. The crew is made up of close friends and family, and we all pitch in and work together.”

“Growing up in a communal yachting family where we all worked together gave us an incredible foundation for our current lives. We learned to co-exist in a relatively small space, and we solved problems together. We had a real sense of responsibility to each other.

Every time we got to a new port, we were not only excited to be there, but we took pride in getting there. It was always a great sense of accomplishment. We were also exposed to different countries and different cultures. Tamsen has travelled from the Med to the South Pacific, to Australia and to the Caribbean.

My two-year-old son already feels very much a part of the boat. The sense of love and family togetherness has translated to our adult lives. Four of our siblings work together professionally for a mental health non-profit called the Glendon Association and we have a website called PsychAlive.org – psychology for everyday life. We owe a lot of who we are to our sailing together as a family.”

James Dyson, the billionaire famous for buying Singapore's most expensive penthouse in 2019, has moved back to the UK

  • Billionaire James Dyson, inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner, has moved back to the UK after two years in Singapore.
  • Dyson spent $54 million on Singapore's most expensive penthouse in July 2019. He sold it in 2020.
  • High-profile billionaires like Sergey Brin and Ray Dalio are opening family offices in the city-state.

Insider Today

Billionaire James Dyson, inventor of the Dyson vacuum cleaner and a notable Singapore resident for about two years, has moved his main address back to the United Kingdom , Benjamin Stupples reported for Bloomberg, citing filings for Dyson's companies including his family office.

Dyson made headlines for paying $54 million for a three-story penthouse atop Singapore's tallest building in July 2019, breaking the city-state's real-estate record. That same year, he relocated the Dyson headquarters to Singapore from the UK and opened a branch of his family office in the city-state.

Estimates of Dyson's personal net worth range from around $10 billion to as high as $29 billion , with his wealth stemming from his holdings in Dyson Holdings Pte., the UK's best-selling vacuum cleaner , according to Bloomberg.

It's unclear why Dyson, 73, has switched his residency back to his home country. In October 2020, he sold his Singapore penthouse at a $7 million loss, but he still reportedly owns another home in Singapore, a bungalow worth a reported 50 million Singapore dollars , or nearly $38 million.

Dyson's company, which currently employs about 1,400 people in Singapore, said last week that the company would "shortly" be moving into its new headquarters at an old power station in Singapore, according to the Business Times.

"We do not comment on private family matters and nothing has changed in respect of the company," a Dyson spokesperson told Bloomberg. "The structure of the group and the business rationale underpinning it are unaltered."

Related stories

Representatives from Dyson's company and charitable foundation did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment for this story.

Dyson, who designed the world's first bagless vacuum cleaner  in 1983, also owns a 300-acre estate in the English countryside. On Wednesday, his luxury yacht, Nahlin, was spotted moored off England's Cornish Coast, photos on Getty Images show.

Dyson may be spending less time in the city-state, but other wealthy foreigners seem to be more interested in Singapore than ever. The number of ultra-wealthy people in Singapore grew in 2020 despite the pandemic, according to Knight Frank's annual Wealth Report. In the past six months, billionaire Google cofounder Sergey Brin and hedge fund billionaire Ray Dalio both announced they'd be setting up family offices in Singapore .

Singapore's low taxes have long attracted foreign investors, and the city-state's handling of the coronavirus pandemic has "cemented the country's traditional safe haven status" for the ultra-rich, Wendy Tang, Knight Frank's Group Managing Director in Singapore, said in a recent report .

"When coupled with strong and enduring economic fundamentals, stable governance, and an attractively competitive tax regime, Singapore offers a break in the clouds that pushed some of the world's mega-rich to have a presence here in recent years," Tang said.
