Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Spin area: 220 sq ft.

thistle sailboat rigging

To control the big main, skippers use two 40 mm Carbo® singles on the boom and one on the traveler car. Some skippers like to cleat the mainsheet and bolt a swivel base with a 57 mm ratchet block to the end of the centerboard cap. To help with getting the boom across quicker, a jibing line is attached to the boom at the same location as the forward block. When it comes time to jibe, the skipper pulls the jibing line across instead of pulling in yards of mainsheet.

thistle sailboat rigging

All Thistles must have a traveler track across the top of the transom. Use a low-beam Small Boat track with a car and a 40 mm Carbo block shackled to the car. Some boats opt to not use a traveler on that track and instead bolt a 40 mm Carbo single stand-up block in the middle. The control lines are led outboard and turn forward to 29 mm Carbo cheek blocks and micro cams with fairlead covers. The advantage of using a traveler is the ability to bring the car above centerline while sailing upwind and easing the main to centerline to induce vertical twist that is fast in choppy conditions.

Hiking Strap Adjusters

Each crew gets their own hiking strap. Being able to adjust the strap length helps the crew keep the boat flat and keep themselves from dragging in the water. The crew uses looser straps while sailing up wind to hike hard and stay out of the helmsman's sight lines, while the boat is heeling over. They use tighter straps when reaching to make moving in and out easier.

Class History

The Thistle is a high-performance one-design racing boat that can also be used for daysailing. Designed in 1945, the Thistle has been carefully modernized to reflect new technologies while keeping all boats competitive.

It carries a lot of sail for its size, planing easily in 10-12 knots of wind. The sail plan consists of a main, jib, and spinnaker. This family-friendly boat features a plumb bow, straight sheer, thin rails and no decking. The rounded bottom provides stability, making it ideal for beginners. It’s usually raced with a three-person crew.

“ By far the best team I've ever worked with. They truly understood what was required to get our boat rigged for our cruising and offshore and completely nailed it, adding an extra halyard and a reef point for a jib sail to be used as a backup on the main! I would highly recommend them as a company, you won't find any better! Paul R
“ It was really fun getting to know the team during the project. They were all helpful in answering our rigging questions and made us feel at ease. The work ended up being better than we could've envisioned! Jeff G
“ I'm wondering why I never used these guys sooner when we were in Florida! They have commendable talent and knowledge and did a great job getting our sailboat ready for cruising. An amazing experience! Mark L, Annapolis

Class Description

The Thistle is popular as a one-desing racer as well as a day-sailer. The Thistle was designed by Gordon K. (Sandy) Douglass who later designed the Highlander and Flying Scot. First constructed in 1945, 4000 boats have now been built, and the thistle has been recognized as one of the most active sailing classes in the US. Their construction originally used molded plywood. The builders started using fiberglass in the late 1950s. The current hull configuration uses a glass-reinforced polyester molded boat with wooden rails, centre board trunk, thwart, fore grating, and aft grating. The spars were once made from spruce, but are now of extruded aluminum construction. Thistle hulls are relatively light for their size; they have no decking or spray protection, which saves weight. The sail plan is larger for the boats weight than in many other dinghies, which makes Thistles perform extremely well in light wind. The mainsail, jib, and spinnaker are simple to rig and operat, keeping the needed gear to a minimum. Their hulls have wide, rounded bottoms, making them stable and allowing the boats to plane in winds as little as 10 knots. It is not uncommon to see thistles efficiently making their way, while other dinghys of similar design are becalmed. Thistles are generally raced with a three person crew: a skipper, a middle, and a forward person. The optimal total crew weight is generally 450 lb to 480 lb (US) depending on wind. The crew weight, however, is generally not the deciding factor in determining the outcome of the races. In fact, class rules do not limit crew weight. In all but the strongest winds, an experienced two person crew can manage the boat. Hiking straps are permitted for either droop or straight leg hiking. The class is generally family friendly, though experienced sailors will still be challenged at the higher levels of competition.

About Thistle Class Association

Looking for fun people to sail with and against? We’d love to meet you and get you in a Thistle. You’ll be part of a welcoming community, and you’ll love the speed and responsiveness of the boat.

The Thistle is a high-performance one-design racing sailboat that is generally sailed with a three-person crew. Thistles have a main, jib and symmetrical spinnaker sail plan. They’re: • Consistently fast due to the high sail area to weight ratio • Quick to plane thanks to the wide, flat stern • Built to slice through waves with the plumb bow It’s a fun, fast, responsive boat that does well in a wide variety of conditions. Thistles plane easily in 10-12 knots of breeze and glide effortlessly in light air.

There are more than 50 active Thistle fleets across the US. Thistles age extremely well, so well cared-for older boats can be just as fast as new boats. Our one-design rules make sure that racing proves the quality of the sailor rather than the money invested in the boat. Thistles sail as a Corinthian class, which means you won’t be sailing against boats with paid crew members (or a paid driver).

The Thistle Class is a community of people who love the Thistle and get a thrill out of sailing it with our friends – new and old. The Thistle Class has been around since 1945 and is still growing and active; you can find Thistles – and Thistlers (that’s what we call ourselves) – all across the country.

We have as much fun on shore together as we do racing. You might see group yoga on the grass, a camping chair circle (always room for more!) or an impromptu training session at someone’s boat. We love sharing knowledge and getting people up to speed. Walk up to anyone in the parking lot and ask about their strategy, rigging, mast tune, anything! We’re glad to help.

Want to give the Thistle Class a try? Find a fleet near you with our interactive map: https://www.thistleclass.com/find-a-fleet/. If there’s no fleet nearby, give our class secretary a shout at [email protected]; there’s probably a Thistle owner or two close by.

Used Thistle Buying Guide: 5 Tips to Judge a Used Boat

thistle sailboat rigging

Checking out the Thistle sailboats for sale on our Thistle Marketplace ? Here are 5 things to check before buying an older Thistle sailboat.

Thistles can generally be found for $2,000 – $15,000 depending on their age, condition, rigging, etc. Purchasing a new Thistle will cost between $20,000 – $25,000 for an all-up boat ready to sail. ( Read more about the boat .)

Before purchasing a Thistle, you will want to consider how you will use it:

You’ll also want to consider how much work you want to do on the boat initially as well as maintenance each year. New Thistles are all built out of fiberglass, however you can still purchase one of the older mahogany boats (either restored or needing restoration).

Table Contents

Before purchasing a used fiberglass Thistle sailboat, check the following:

1. condition of the woodwork.

Are the rails delaminating? Is the wood in good condition or is it really black (particularly mahogany/ash). Teak rails will not turn dark (or can be lightened using teak cleaner), however bleaching mahogany once it is black is very difficult and does not work well.

2. Stiffness of the boat

If you step in the boat, does it flex a lot under your feet? Can you easily depress the sides of the boat up front (especially around the waterline)? This is definitely important if you plan on racing the boat, however in general it does signal the quality of the boat’s construction.

3. Color of the mast

Is the mast silver, black, gold or wood? You definitely want a black or silver mast if you plan on racing the boat. Add the price of a new mast ($1,000) into the boat’s price if the boat comes with a gold or wooden mast. The old gold masts are much too stiff for competitive racing.

thistle mast colors

Note the black mast on 3905 and 3719 and the silver mast on 4032.

4. Presence of cracks and creases in the hull

Look at the bottom of the boat (yep; crawl under and take a look). Does the bottom of the boat have a lot of stress cracks (they look like spider webs)? Most used boats will exhibit these cracks. However if there are too many, it signifies a weakening of the fiberglass.

You’ll also want to look at the trailer bunks the boat has been sitting on. If they are 2″-3″ wide and run the length of the boat, check under the bunks for creases in the bottom of the hull. These are relatively difficult to fix, and they affect the speed of the boat.

Check around the edges of tanks for cracks (as well as on the tanks themselves) for the stress cracks mentioned earlier. Tanks sometimes become cracked where they are attached to the hull. This can be a major problem because they are relatively difficult to patch as a “do-it-yourself” project. Remember, leaky tanks can be very unfortunate in the event of a capsize! Definitely look closely at this, and if you purchase a boat in this condition, fix them or have them fixed.

5. Weight of the boat

If you intend to competitively race the boat, it is important to consider the boat’s weight. If you purchase the boat from a racer, they will likely know the boat’s weight (measured as the total weight of the hull, flotation tanks, centerboard, rudder, tiller, mast, boom, mainsheet, and attached hardware and rigging).

Minimum weight is preferable (515lbs), however 10-15lbs overweight will be acceptable except perhaps at the highest competitive levels. If the boat is 15-25lbs light, then more likely than not the hull is not as well constructed as it could be. Weight should certainly not be your number one concern, but keep it in mind if you intend to race the boat competitively.

One last note about buying a used Thistle sailboat

These are simply suggestions for you to look at when considering which Thistle to purchase. If you’re looking for all these elements to be perfect, you probably won’t find a used boat to purchase (of any class). However if a boat exhibits all these qualities negatively, you may want to keep looking – especially if you intend to race it. Thistles age extremely well compared to most one-design classes, however their condition is still a function of how they have been cared for.

Once you’ve bought a boat, check out the resources we offer on rebuilding and rigging a Thistle .

Does this process sound intimidating?

Most Thistlers would be happy to help you examine a boat. If you’re new to the class, check out our Find a Fleet map to find and contact a Thistler near you.
