ABOUT THE TEAM

Meet the Swiss challenger for the America's Cup: Alinghi Red Bull Racing

After over a decade away from the America’s Cup, Alinghi, one of the most dynamic names in the history of the event, is returning to battle for sailing’s highest honour. The double America’s Cup-winning syndicate joins forces with Red Bull, a driving force in global sport, to create a new team: Alinghi Red Bull Racing.

The team represents the Société Nautique de Genève and is partnered with Swiss watch brand TUDOR . The official Swiss challenger will compete in the Louis Vuitton Cup, the Challenger Selection Series for the 37th America’s Cup in 2024 in Barcelona and will also field teams in the Youth and Women’s America’s Cup. The countdown is on!

A NEW JOINT VENTURE

As announced in December 2021, Red Bull , and double America’s Cup-winning syndicate Alinghi team up to campaign for the oldest trophy in international sport. “While keeping the winning spirit that has always been at the heart of Alinghi, we want this challenge to do something totally different, totally new and totally fresh,” said Alinghi founder Ernesto Bertarelli. “When we imagined with Dietrich Mateschitz the involvement of Red Bull in the America’s Cup, he said: ‘Our way is not to get into the sport as sponsors, but to blend into the team, to form a true partnership, to nurture young athletes and turn them into the best in their field.’”

Alinghi and Red Bull have long been friendly rivals in series such as the GC32 Racing Tour and the Extreme Sailing Series. Having shared this mutual respect and admiration, Hans-Peter Steinacher, a two-time Olympic champion in the Tornado Class and Austria’s most successful summer sport athlete, is enthusiastic about the new partnership: “I am proud to see that the team works and performs as ONE motivated group. On land and on the water. We have a clear goal: to win the 37th America's Cup. We accept the challenge and know that we can only achieve this if everyone on the team gives 100%,” he said.

In partnering with Alinghi, Red Bull also brings the expertise of the Red Bull Advanced Technologies unit that has supported Red Bull Racing in achieving a total of seven Formula One Drivers’ Championships – including the dominating triumph secured by Max Verstappen in 2022 – as well as five F1 Constructors’ Championships. "We share our experiences, engineering tips, etc. It is a two-way cooperation," explained Red Bull Racing’s team principal Christian Horner.

SWISS SAILORS, READY FOR THE CHALLENGE

Sixteen sailors have been selected to join the Alinghi Red Bull Racing crew to represent the Société Nautique de Genève and Switzerland during the 37th America’s Cup. While some are new to the sport, these talented athletes are backed by several of sailing’s biggest names.

On 8 June 2022, Alinghi Red Bull Racing presented the sailing team, and with an average age of 30, it is eleven years younger than the last crew that took Switzerland to victory in Valencia. This team has youth factor!

According to the  rules  of the 37th America’s Cup, eight sailors will race the AC75 foiling monohull, organised in two groups: the Driving Group and the Power Group. The Driving Group selection process started in summer 2021 with interviews, followed by physical and sailing tests. “It was really a collective effort. We worked with the head coach and the first sailors selected, and made all our decisions together,” explained Pierre-Yves Jorand, leading the selections in Switzerland. “Character, attitude, and development potential are as important as skills. We’re going to be driving a Formula 1 machine with several people in the cockpit: one on the brake, one steering, one on the accelerator, and one on the gear lever. It’s all about teamwork.”

Recruitment for the Power Group focused on members of the Swiss cycling and rowing federations. “The track record of these athletes caught our attention; though not experienced in sailing, they excel in top-level sports, winning, and performance under pressure,” added Nils Frei, working with Pierre-Yves Jorand in the selections. “Rowers are extremely versatile athletes due to their strength, power, and endurance. But we still had to explain to them what this event represents; it’s a career choice, a life choice.”

THE DESIGN TEAM

Alinghi Red Bull Racing is above all else a team, a group of passionate people working together towards one goal: winning the America’s Cup. Working alongside the sailors mentioned above, the design team is led by Marcelino Botin, principal designer of the Swiss challenger, in charge of hydro and aerodynamics.

“It’s a big responsibility to lead the design for such a legendary team that has won the America’s Cup twice, and even more so after partnering with Red Bull and benefiting from the knowledge of Red Bull Advanced Technologies. The cohesion between the designers and the sailors really illustrates where Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s strength lies, with numerous synergies, and an excellent work atmosphere where ideas come together,” he said. Design Coordinator Adolfo Carrau oversees the different areas of design. From a global perspective, the most important strength of any design group is how the whole team works together.

The Boat Build

The new AC75, per the official race protocol, was built in Switzerland, home country of the club which the team represents: the Société Nautique de Genève. After long months of hard work on design, development and construction in Ecublens, Switzerland, the boat was carefully wrapped for transport with the cover signed by Ecublens boat builders, led by Jean-Marie Fragnière, to celebrate the handoff. BoatOne left the boatyard along the shores of Lake Geneva in Ecublens in February 2024 and traveled by truck across France and into northeastern Spain before arriving at the team Base in Barcelona on March 5, 2024.

BARCELONA BASE

On 8 August 2022, Alinghi Red Bull Racing launched BoatZero – a training AC75 bought in New Zealand – becoming the first team to take up residence in Barcelona, home of the 37th America’s Cup. Having settled in the Catalan capital, the team turned its attention to the lengthy process of preparing BoatZero. During the christening, Alceo Bertarelli broke the traditional bottle on the wing, marking an important step in the campaign for the 37th America’s Cup.

BoatZero was a training platform for the young Swiss sailors who hadn’t sailed an AC75 before. To aid the learning curve, the crew is mentored by highly experienced sailors: Dean Barker of New Zealand, (NZL), Phil Roberson (NZL) and Jason Waterhouse (AUS). Pietro Sibello (ITA), a finalist in the 36th America’s Cup with Luna Rossa, brings his expertise as head coach.

After one year in a temporary Base in Port Vell, the team moved to its permanent Base for the 37th America’s Cup, located between the Barcelona Aquarium and the Maremagnum, in July 2023. The team opened its doors for the public in September, to welcome the fans in a celebration Open Doors Day at the Base.

Nine months later, Alinghi Red Bull Racing officially presented its race yacht, BoatOne, with a Christening ceremony at dockside that featured a human tower from local Castellers. The special honors were performed by Chiara Bertarelli, who cracked the bottle of Champagne across the bow. The racing machine was then craned into the water for her first contact with the sea. The milestone marked a significant shift to the final competition phase of the campaign with the official opening of the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup.

The foiling AC75s won’t be the only boats catching the eye of America’s Cup fans and viewers around the world this summer. De Antonio Yachts, one of the world’s iconic day boat manufacturers based out of Barcelona, unveiled its stunning D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing Limited Edition this weekend at the Düsseldorf Boat Show designed in collaboration with the Swiss Challengers for the Louis Vuitton 37th America’s Cup. Youth & Women’s America’s Cup sailors Anja von Allmen and Joshua Richner represented Alinghi Red Bull Racing at the boat unveiling to celebrate the partnership.

The limited edition model will feature design elements and hardware details that speak to the look, feel, and values of Alinghi Red Bull Racing as a team and will have a production run of only 37 units.

As part of the D37’s unveiling, the boat has been named an official spectator boat of Alinghi Red Bull Racing for the America’s Cup campaign. The team will have two D37s, alongside two electric D28 boats.

“To see our team’s colors and ethos represented in such a unique yacht design like the De Antonio D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing limited edition is very special for our entire campaign,” said Michel Hodara, Alinghi Red Bull Racing co-general manager. “Having such a premium boat builder as partners will elevate the America’s Cup experience for guests who get the chance to experience the Cup atmosphere from the deck of a De Antonio. It also provides us the opportunity to showcase alternative energy solutions with the electric powertrains on the smaller D28.”

The D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing is a model based on the award-winning D36 introduced in 2022. The new limited edition is equipped with two Mercury 400hp Racing engines. Both the exterior and interior have been redesigned for the D37 incorporating the team’s official navy blue with red accents. The design touches include special upholstery finishes with bucket seats and steering wheel in navy blue leather and red stitching. The new version also features many details in the carbon fiber such as inscriptions with the Alinghi Red Bull Racing logo.

“The new D37 Alinghi Red Bull Racing is a collector’s piece designed for lovers of sailing, passionate about the team and the competition. A very special model for its finishes and high performance that will only be marketed during this year,” said Marc de Antonio, co-founder of the brand.

Alinghi Red Bull Racing now has the D37 – alongside its race boats – as another innovative craft that will inspire fans and team members alike throughout the Cup year.

America’s Cup: Alinghi Red Bull Racing launch their AC75

Toby Heppell

  • Toby Heppell
  • August 9, 2022

Alinghi Red Bull Racing have launched their AC75, which they will sail in the coming days as the team prepares for the 37th America's Cup in 2024

red bull superyacht

Alinghi Red Bull Racing launched their AC75 in Barcelona yesterday, Monday 8th August 2022. This is the first America’s Cup boat to hit the water since the conclusion of the 36th America’s Cup in New Zealand in early 2021, as teams begin the long build up to the next America’s Cup set to take place in Barcelona 2024.

Although this is the first AC75 we have seen on the water during this Cup cycle, it should be noted this is not a new launch. Alinghi Red Bull Racing team purchased the first boat launched by Emirates Team New Zealand in the last Cup cycle – an option for teams which did not take part in the last America’s Cup .

red bull superyacht

As a new entry to the America’s Cup, Alinghi Red Bull Racing will be able to get out on the water sailing in this training boat, while teams that took part in the last Cup cycle will have to wait until next year before they are able to get out on the water in their AC75s.

Alceo Bertarelli, son of syndicate founder Ernesto Bertarelli, smashed the customary bottle of champagne on the wing as Red Bull sponsored Hazal Nahir, the trail-blazing Turkish parkour athlete performed tricks on the foil arms during the christening ceremony.

“Today symbolises the adventure that begins in Barcelona,” commented Alinghi Red Bull Racing Head Coach Nils Frei at the launch, “This first-generation boat will allow us to gain valuable training hours before we have our race boat. We are a new team sailing a boat that we are only just discovering, but to be able to train already this year is highly beneficial.

“If there is one thing that all Cup campaigns have in common, it is that you can never make up for lost time. And you never have enough of it! The preparations for this launch have given us the opportunity to learn to work together, and it is so important to be united towards a common goal in an America’s Cup campaign.”

Having purchased the boat early in the cycle from Emirates Team New Zealand , the Alinghi Red Bull Racing Team have been working flat-out to prepare the AC75 for its first sail, scheduled for later this week, subject to tow-testing and final safety preparations.

red bull superyacht

Adding vital AC75 experience to the Swiss team are two legends of the America’s Cup in the form of Dean Barker from New Zealand, a veteran campaigner, part of the winning New Zealand team in 2000 and more recently helmsman of American Magic in 2021, plus Pietro Sibello, a finalist with Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli in the 2021 America’s Cup Match.

Skipper of Alinghi Red Bull Racing, Arnaud Psarofaghis, will be helming the boat throughout the permissible training period and crew will be rotated in and out as the schedule progresses. Analysis of performance in all areas will be key and the eyes of the Cup world will be watching intently to see how this new team develops.

“BoatZero will allow us to gain the necessary experience on the AC75. Despite the satisfaction of today’s festivities, we are aware that there is still a lot of work to do to catch up with the level of the teams that raced the 36th America’s Cup. But today has given us the energy to focus on the next step: sailing,” commented Silvio Arrivabene, co-General Manager and Head of Technical Operations.

Although this boat does represent an important step for the team in terms of getting up to speed in a new (to them) class of boat, it is notable that, so far, there appear to be few signs that this AC75 has been developed in any significant way to bring it into line with the updated AC75 class rule .

From the early images the foil arms do not appear to be longer, as allowed by the new rules, and similarly there doesn’t appear to have been a change from the traditional grinding stations to a ‘cyclor’ grinding set-up, which most anticipate will be seen in the coming America’s Cup after they were effectively banned in the last cycle but have been reinstated as an option this time around.

In fact, even the now defunct bow sprit (the Code 0 sails they were to be used for have been dropped) remains in the launch images.

Of course for any new team merely getting to sail an AC75 will bring plenty of information and there do appear to be different foils on either foil arm, indicating the platform will be used as a test bed for foil design. Last cycle we saw all teams running similar asymmetric set ups early on in an attempt to validate future design choices and directions.

Sunseeker ’s memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Red Bull Advanced Technologies was a bit short on details, but its most important takeaway is that the yachting world will see one very fast, cool Sunseeker sportboat next year. Sunseeker was mum about the exact specifications of the new boat, only telling RobbReport.com that it would be between 30 and 50 feet. “We’ll be going back to our roots with this new boat,” said Simon Clare, Sunseeker’s marketing director. “All I can say is that this Sunseeker will be a sportboat for the 21st century using Formula 1 technology.”

Red Bull Advanced Technologies is a subsidiary of Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Technologies, a company that has pushed the Aston Martin brand to the top of Formula 1, thanks to its out-of-the-box approaches to design and technology. It is currently involved in the design Aston Martin’s new Valkyrie supercar .

Sunseeker Predator 57 MKII.

Clare said the partnership to create one of boating’s most dramatic concept yachts could eventually translate into a line of Sunseeker sportboats. Most fans know the British builder’s yacht lines, each with a DNA for performance imprinted into the design. Even its flagship 131 hits 25 knots, light speed for a 131-foot yacht. One of its newest launches, the Predator 57 , pushes past 32 knots, without compromising on comforts and luxuries on the interior.

Sunseeker actually started life with a fast, cool 17-footer as its premier launch boat in 1969. “When someone bought a Sunseeker in the 1970s, they were buying a small, fast, and sexy product,” says Clare. “Friends of the brand always ask us about going back to our heritage. We’ll be going back to our roots in smaller, fast boats.”

Sunseeker CEO Phil Popham is excited about the Red Bull design partnership. “Since our inception, we’ve designed yachts that make the heart race,” he says. “As such, Red Bull Advanced Technologies is a natural partner for us.” Expect whatever Red Bull uses to power its drinks to be flowing through the new Sunseeker’s veins.

Of course, the new Red Bull–influenced Sunseeker will no doubt be much larger and faster than the first Sunseekers of a half-century ago, but it will also have the luxury that aficionados have come to expect from the brand. Watch for the new Sunseeker sportboat to hit the water next year.

Sail of the century: TUDOR x Alinghi Red Bull Racing

Over the last decade, tudor watches has partnered with many of the world’s great sports teams and athletes. ahead of the 37th america's cup 2024, discover why tudor’s latest collaboration with alinghi red bull racing is making waves, by ben winstanley.

Loris von Siebenthal

Published: Monday 23rd September 2024

Brought to you by.

Square Mile Promotions

On a Friday evening in April, an expectant crowd gathered outside Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s base in Barcelona for the grand unveiling of its AC75 racing boat, dubbed simply ‘BoatOne’. Once the  TUDOR watch projected onto the building ticked down to zero, the doors to the hangar pulled up and the high performance craft emerged in all its glory through a dramatic haze of smoke.

As the crowd cheered its approval, a troupe of 70 acrobats from Catalan’s La Fura Dels Baus, all clad in black, began an aerial routine above the boat’s hull that saw the artists form a human sail reaching high above the innovative AC75 design. It’s a spectacle that you might imagine appropriate for an Olympic opening ceremony or perhaps a particularly lavish Formula 1 Grand Prix, but the unveiling of a boat? Perhaps not so much. Then again, this is far from your average vessel. When it comes to sailing, there is simply nothing quite like the America’s Cup; it’s important to make a big splash.

Dating back to 1851, the America’s Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy in the world and is revered throughout the sailing community as the pinnacle of its sport. Aboard each competing raceboat you will find Olympians and championship medalists from multiple sailing categories, in the offices you will find world-leading aerodynamicists and boat designers, and in the background an army of nutritionists, trainers, and engineers all vying for the honour of being named the fastest crew on the ocean.

red bull superyacht

But its partnership with Alinghi Red Bull Racing, the first time the brand has ventured into the world of competitive sailing, goes beyond TUDOR’s emblematic shield proudly displayed on both the hull and mast of BoatOne – it’s a meeting of minds, shared values, and a commitment to continually push the envelope. After all, both disciplines – whether that’s high-end watchmaking or race-winning sailing – rely on precision engineering, technological innovation, and meticulous craftsmanship in order to succeed. But, above all, they are equally concerned with the resolutely human endeavour to follow the path least travelled in their quest for greatness.

TUDOR’s reputation as the ultimate watch for those with a passion for adventure has grown to greater heights

Encapsulating this shared ethos are two exclusive ARBR  Pelagos watches, the time-only  TUDOR FXD Pelagos and the TUDOR FXD Pelagos Chronograph , both designed to withstand the rigours of elite sailing and whatever else life may throw at you. Sporting Alinghi Red Bull Racing’s distinctive team colours of navy, black and red, the two watches are constructed using a high-tech carbon composite for the case and bezel insert, alongside titanium throughout the bezel, crown and chrono pushers, and 316L stainless steel for the case back. It’s a pleasing synergy with the unique AC75 design, which similarly comprises cutting-edge carbon, titanium and steel.

Utilising TUDOR’s wealth of experience in the diving world, both watches feature a water-resistant FXD case design that can withstand pressures up to 200m beneath the water’s surface, including use of the chronograph function at such depths, as well as featuring typical dive watch hallmarks such as a 120-notch bi-directional bezel and superior Super-LumiNova Grade X1 on the hands, indexes and bezel insert for enhanced legibility.

As a nod to the two editions’ sailing roots, the bezels are marked from 60 to 0, to allow the wearer to easily track the countdown at the start of a regatta – one of the most pivotal moments in any yacht race.

The cornerstone of any TUDOR watch is its ability to withstand even the most extreme environments, including life on board an America’s Cup racing boat. This doesn’t happen by chance: each watch is robustly tested at TUDOR’s new watch Manufacture located in Le Locle, Switzerland, to ensure it passes muster. This involves a gruelling series of water pressure, shock, and anti-magnetism tests designed to push the watches to the point of failure – only the most resilient make their way onto the wrists of their proud owners.

At its distilled essence, the America’s Cup is about timing – catching the perfect wind gust, clawing an advantage over the start line, and playing your cards right as the fickleness of the elements plan your demise. With that in mind, it’s no surprise to find that TUDOR has opted for two high-performance movements inside its ARBR special editions. Both the Manufacture Calibre MT5602 found inside the time-only model and the Manufacture Calibre MT5813 in the chronograph model are certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC), with its performance exceeding the standards set by this independent institute with a precision of -2/+4 seconds’ variation per day. Additionally, each boasts approximately 70 hours of power reserve, as well as a silicon balance spring for added reliability.

Beyond the ARBR Pelagos, TUDOR’s watch collection, including the iconic  Pelagos and vintage-inspired  Black Bay models, also encapsulates the brand’s adventurous spirit. These watches are engineered for individuals who embrace a life of excitement and discovery, offering reliability and style in every endeavour.

In TUDOR, Alinghi Red Bull Racing has found a partner that understands the requirements of excellence and the challenge in pushing the boundaries. Come 20 October, it might just prove to be a winning partnership.

Red Bull Ace Max Verstappen Once Spent $6 Million On 120-ft Super Luxury Yacht

Red Bull Ace Max Verstappen Once Spent $6 Million On 120-ft Super Luxury Yacht

Max Verstappen is one of the biggest names in Formula 1 today and is arguably the most in-form driver. He won two back-to-back World Championships in 2021 and 2022 and has already surpassed the career of the legendary Fernando Alonso.

Other than being one of the best drivers in the sport, Verstappen is also one of the highest-paid drivers. His current contract with Red Bull runs until the 2028 season, and guarantees a $50 million paycheck annually, without bonuses. Off the track, Verstappen is not known for spending a huge amount of money on extravagant things but back in 2021, the Dutchman splurged on a super luxury yacht.

Max Verstappen has purchased a 120-ft yacht named “Bagheera” for almost $6 million. • 3 floors • Sleeps 9 • Infinity Jacuzzi • $100k weekly rental rate Red Bull pays the 23-year-old F1 driver about $25 million in salary annually. In 2021, Verstappen was earning $25 million a year from his Red Bull contract. Out of that, he spent $6 million on a 120-ft yacht that was named ‘Bagheera’. The yacht has three floors and can accommodate nine people. It also has an infinity jacuzzi, and the weekly rent for Bagheera is more than $100,000!

Max Verstappen calls Virtual 24 hours of Le Mans ‘a clown show’

Verstappen is one of the best drivers in F1, but he loves racing even off it. The 25-year-old is an avid sim racer and has taken part in several notable tournaments over the last few years, including the Virtual 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The virtual version of this prestigious race first started in 2020 to cover up for the actual race which got canceled due to the Covid 19 pandemic. However, it ended up becoming a huge hit and several big names in the racing world joined in on it. 2022 was Verstappen’s third appearance in this event, and probably his last.

He was driving for Team Redline and was leading the Championship. However, the server crashed which meant he had to rejoin at the back of the grid. This frustrated the Red Bull ace, and made him take the decision of retiring.

“They call it ‘amazingly bad luck’, well, this is just incompetence,” Verstappen said . “You cannot call this an event, a clown show. That’s why it’s better to retire the car, because driving around in P15 for six hours makes no sense for everyone.”

After the race, Verstappen added that this was the last time he won’t take part in the race ever again.

Red Bull Hints at Future Daniel Ricciardo Role After Shock VCARB Exit

Formula 1 veteran Daniel Ricciardo may soon find himself in a new role within the Red Bull organization. Helmut Marko , Red Bull motorsport advisor, recently revealed the team's interest in retaining the Australian driver after his active racing career concludes.

This development follows Ricciardo’s replacement by reserve driver Liam Lawson at Red Bull's satellite team, VCARB, who will join Yuki Tsunoda on the grid starting from the Austin round in October.

Ricciardo, who began his journey with Red Bull as a junior driver in 2007, has been a pivotal figure in the team, as well as others, over a successful 14-year career. However, with his recent replacement by Lawson, it seems likely that Ricciardo’s illustrious Formula 1 career is approaching its end. Helmut Marko hinted at the possibility of Ricciardo transitioning to a non-racing role within Red Bull. He explained to Motorsport-Total.com :

"We have had a conversation and it is clear that we are interested. He is one of the most popular Formula 1 drivers, especially in the United States.

"But he wants time to consider his entire future. I don't think he will enter any other racing category. And on the other hand, if he is no longer actively racing, will he still want these PR activities at all?

"Ricciardo also has a lot of money in the bank and I would say it is a life decision for him to decide how he wants to shape his future life."

Ricciardo himself has voiced his reservations about continuing in competitive racing, particularly as a reserve driver. He commented:

"No. Obviously last year it made a lot of sense to keep one foot in the door and the big picture was to try and get back at Red Bull.

"I think if I was to do that again... I'm not going to restart my career. I'm also 35 and I still showed the pace that I've had over the years, but it's obviously been evident that it's been harder for me to show it every weekend.

"It definitely came easier for me when I was 25 as opposed to 35, but also maybe the competition is just increasing.

"I'm happy that once upon a time I could do it and that was a lot of fun. And I also want to leave the sport with good memories of it and it doesn't get into that place where it's just a grind and I'm out in Q1 every weekend. That's obviously not fun."

Considering the potential pathways for Ricciardo, an ambassadorial role seems to be a viable option given his widespread popularity, especially in markets like the U.S., where Ricciardo enjoys an avid fan base. However, whether Ricciardo will embrace such a role remains uncertain.

Horner pays tribute to 'special' Ricciardo with incredible Red Bull promise

Horner pays tribute to 'special' Ricciardo with incredible Red Bull promise

red bull superyacht

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has broken his silence on the untimely departure of Daniel Ricciardo from Formula 1.

It was announced on Thursday that the Aussie driver would leave RB with immediate effect in order for 22-year-old Liam Lawson to take over his seat for the remainder of the 2024 season.

Throughout his 14 seasons on the grid, Ricciardo has raced for five different teams and secured eight grands prix victories, including an iconic win at the Monaco GP in 2018.

Having dipped in and out of the Red Bull family, team boss Horner always made it clear he wanted the Aussie back working within the main team.

Ricciardo's first steps towards F1 were with Horner's outfit after becoming the team's test and reserve driver in 2009 before his debut in the sport with HRT in 2011.

Ricciardo's Red Bull journey

Following an early contract termination from McLaren in 2022, Ricciardo was replaced by fellow countryman Oscar Piastri at the papaya outfit, leaving him without a seat for the 2023 season.

Ricciardo instead was welcomed back into the Red Bull family with open arms, this time watching from within the garage as a reserve driver, awaiting his chance to return to the track.

The opportunity arose in 2023, when the Red Bull junior team, AlphaTauri at the time, dropped Nyck de Vries mid-season.

Ricciardo was set to replace the rookie Dutchman from the Hungarian Grand Prix onwards but after just two races, was replaced by Lawson after breaking his hand during FP2 at Zandvoort.

It is now Lawson who will replace him once again, hoping to prove himself worthy of a full-time seat in 2025.

What was Horner's parting Ricciardo promise?

Following the confirmation of Ricciardo's F1 exit, Horner took to social media to express his thanks to the 35-year-old.

"From the moment you arrived at Red Bull it was obvious you were so much more than just a driver. Your constant enthusiasm, sense of humour and attitude will leave an indelible legacy on the Team here in Milton Keynes and F1 as a whole."

"Thank you for the wins, smiles, songs (and I wish I could say the shoeys)."

Horner continued his parting message to Ricciardo with a promise over the Aussie's future: "You will always be a special part of the Red Bull Family.

"8 wins, 32 podiums, 1329 points. These statistics and accolades are not the only measure of who you are and what you have achieved. Thank you Daniel."

Despite Horner's promise, it remains unclear whether the honey badger will find himself back at Red Bull from the sidelines or if this truly is the end of his F1 career.

Red Bull’s Sergio Perez on rumours: I’ll retire ‘when I want’

red bull superyacht

LONDON - Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez admits he briefly considered leaving Formula 1 but insists that his retirement is still at least two years away.

The 34-year-old Mexican racer’s future has been the subject of speculation, with rumours that Red Bull planned to replace him before his contract expires after the 2025 F1 season.

“These past six months I did think about it, but it took me three seconds to make the decision,” Perez told DAZN about walking away.

“In the end, it would be the easy route, after so many years to quit and kind of give up. I would never have forgiven myself for that.

“I want to finish my career when I want and not when someone tells me. That’s my main focus: to get to the point where I can decide my future.”

Perez is winless on the F1 circuit this season. He has 14 top-10 showings, including three runner-up finishes, and ranks eighth in the current standings. Red Bull teammate Max Verstappen leads the table as he chases his fourth straight world championship.

Perez has six grand prix victories and 39 podium finishes in his career but wants more.

“For now, I am very motivated, to be honest, I really want to continue in F1,” Perez said. “I enjoy it. Especially the good times you really enjoy, but you also learn to enjoy the bad ones.”

Perez said he doesn’t plan to race into his 40s, like 43-year-old Fernando Alonso of Spain. Perez said he wants to spend more time with his small children as they grow up.

He said he “will be here for at least two more years. However, I don’t see myself in Formula 1 for much longer.” FIELD LEVEL MEDIA

Daniel Ricciardo loses his seat in Formula 1 as Red Bull executes midseason shake-up

Daniel Ricciardo

Formula 1 driver Daniel Ricciardo was dismissed Thursday by the Red Bull Racing junior team effectively immediately, ending his second stint in the sport with an unusual midseason departure.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Ricciardo, a beloved Australian driver who is an eight-time race winner over 14 years in the sport. He has become a celebrity among American F1 fans because of his frequent appearances on Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” series.

Ricciardo, 35, doesn’t have a seat on the F1 grid next season, and it’s not clear that he will find one at this late stage, as most teams have already finalized their lineups for 2025. His stat sheet in F1 includes three pole positions and 32 podiums.

“I’ve loved this sport my whole life. It’s wild and wonderful and been a journey,” Ricciardo said a farewell message to his 9.3 million followers on Instagram .

“To the teams and individuals that have played their part, thank you," he wrote. "To the fans who love the sport sometimes more than me haha thank you. It’ll always have its highs and lows but it’s been fun and truth be told I wouldn’t change it. Until the next adventure.”

The Red Bull junior team, Visa Cash App RB, said reserve driver Liam Lawson will take his seat for the last six races of the 2024 season, which include two in the U.S. — one in Austin, Texas, in October and the other in Las Vegas in November.

Daniel Ricciardo

RB team principal Laurent Mekies thanked Ricciardo, 35, “for his hard work across the last two seasons with us.”

“He has brought a lot of experience and talent to the Team with a fantastic attitude, which has helped everyone to develop and foster a tight team spirit,” Mekies said in a statement. “Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track and never without that smile. He will be missed, but will always hold a special place within the Red Bull family.”

A Red Bull spokesperson declined to comment when asked about the reason for the midseason swap and whether the team was on a deadline to decide his future.

“We don’t discuss driver contracts publicly,” the spokesperson said.

The once-dominant Red Bull faces fresh struggles in the 2024 championship, along with difficult questions about its future. It has already been overtaken in the constructors’ title standings by McLaren, which has significantly improved its car during the season. And Red Bull’s triple world champion, Max Verstappen, has seen his lead in the driver’s championship reduced by McLaren’s Lando Norris . The RB team is known for auditioning potential candidates to promote to the senior Red Bull team.

Ricciardo began driving for the Red Bull junior team in 2011 before he got promoted to the senior team in 2014. He quickly proved himself as a talented driver with a knack for daring overtakes, and some commentators even dubbed him a future world champion.

Red Bull Racing's Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo

But in 2018, amid tension with the up-and-coming Verstappen, Ricciardo made a fateful decision to leave Red Bull. His career hasn’t been the same since then, apart from his scoring one impressive and unlikely victory with McLaren in 2021. The team axed him the next year as he struggled behind the wheel. Ricciardo returned to the Red Bull family last year as a reserve driver and got another chance with the junior team, with some hoping he would return to form and race alongside Verstappen. It wasn’t to be.

Ricciardo appeared emotional after he finished last weekend's race in Singapore, with rumors swirling about his possible replacement.

“A lot of emotions, because, look, I’m aware it could be it,” he said in a post-race interview , saying he felt “a flood of many emotions and feelings” after he crossed the finish line.

Mekies welcomed Lawson, who has impressed leaders of the Red Bull team while occasionally subbing in for one of its drivers.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Liam. He already knows the Team well,” he said. “He drove for us last season, and coped well under difficult circumstances, so it’ll be a natural transition. It’s great to see young talent from within the Red Bull family make the next step. We’re looking forward to getting our heads down and focusing on the rest of the season together.”

Ricciardo fired by Red Bull and will be immediately replaced by Lawson at sister-team RB

Azerbaijan f1 gp auto racing.

Daniel Ricciardo, one of the most popular and likeable drivers on the Formula 1 grid, was released by Red Bull Racing on Thursday and will be replaced immediately by Liam Lawson.

The 35-year-old Ricciardo knew at the Singapore Grand Prix it was likely his final F1 race — essentially confirmed when his RB team called him into the pits ahead of the final lap to give the Australian the opportunity to set the fastest lap of the race.

Ricciardo hit the mark — it took a bonus point away from title challenger Lando Norris and indirectly helped out Max Verstappen in his quest for a fourth consecutive drivers’ championship — then sat inside his car for an unusually long time after the race savoring his final moments.

When he finally began making his way back to the paddock, the Australian had to walk through an honor guard, of sorts, of supporters who were lined up applauding him.

Ricciardo acknowledged Sunday it was likely his last race, saying he had hoped to use his time at RB to make a case for returning to the main Red Bull team, but that he didn’t get the “fairytale ending” he wanted.

“Everyone here at VCARB would like to thank Daniel for his hard work across the last two seasons with us,” RB team principal Laurent Mekies said . “He has brought a lot of experience and talent to the team with a fantastic attitude, which has helped everyone to develop and foster a tight team spirit.

“Daniel has been a true gentleman both on and off the track and never without that smile. He will be missed, but will always hold a special place within the Red Bull family.”

Ricciardo won eight races over 14 seasons, with his final victory coming at Monza in 2021 when he won driving for McLaren. He was bought out of his McLaren deal after the 2022 season, and he was hired to return to Red Bull as a team ambassador.

That led to seven races in 2023 with Red Bull’s sister team. Ricciardo was given the seat full-time for 2024 but through 18 races he’s only finished inside the points three times.

His best finish in the championship was third in 2014 and 2016 — both years when Mercedes dominated the season and Ricciardo, then at Red Bull, was effectively best of the rest.

Verstappen’s arrival at Red Bull part-way through the 2016 season gradually saw Ricciardo move into a supporting role. His career stalled after a move to Renault at 2019, and after switching to McLaren in 2021, he was largely outclassed by Norris.

Ricciardo made a lasting impact on F1 as one of the faces of the sport’s boom in the United States driven by Netflix’s “Drive To Survive” series. But he has shown no interest in moving to American motorsports, and said at Singapore last weekend that racing IndyCar on ovals “scared” him.

He doesn’t know what’s next.

“When I got into F1, everyone knew me as the happy guy and the nice guy, but I do have a killer instinct,” he said in the first episode filmed during the 2018 season. “I do believe I can be world champion and for me it’s like, ‘Why else would I be doing this?’”

Lawson, from New Zealand, will finish the season at RB alongside Yuki Tsunoda. Lawson took part in five F1 races last year, with a best finish of ninth, as a replacement when Ricciardo broke his hand in a crash.

Lawson has been a Red Bull reserve driver since 2022, making his Grand Prix debut in Zandvoort last year when Ricciardo was injured. His five-race drive saw him score points for the team and he finished ninth at the Singapore GP.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Liam. He already knows the team well. He drove for us last season, and coped well under difficult circumstances, so it’ll be a natural transition,” Mekies said. “It’s great to see young talent from within the Red Bull family make the next step. We’re looking forward to getting our heads down and focusing on the rest of the season together.”

Remco Evenepoel isn’t going anywhere. Yes, he said it.

The Belgian superstar put to rest the latest swirling transfer rumors — this time to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe — as he locks down ahead of Sunday’s road world championships clash against Tadej Pogačar in Zürich.

The Olympic double gold medalist confirmed Friday he’s staying at Soudal Quick-Step through his current contract until the end of 2026.

“I’m glad all the speculation can stop,” Evenepoel said during a press conference. “So you see I’m not lying after all. We continue to work towards the big goal of one day winning the Giro and the Tour.”

At just 24, Evenepoel has already established himself as one of cycling’s brightest stars, especially after his 2022 Vuelta a España victory.

Since then, the rumor mill hasn’t stopped spinning, with whispers of a potential move to Ineos Grenadiers and then a wild saga involving a botched merger between Quick-Step and Jumbo-Visma last fall.

The latest frenzy kicked off when energy drink giant Red Bull entered the cycling world with a bold move, buying a controlling interest in Bora-Hansgrohe and setting their sights on building a Tour de France powerhouse .

Naturally, all eyes turned to Evenepoel, fresh off a stellar third-place finish in his Tour de France debut in 2024.

Despite insider reports of talks being in motion, Evenepoel’s statement Friday seems to have put the nail in the latest transfer buzz.

Chasing worlds double in Zürich: ‘There are plenty of opportunities to attack’

Evenepoel worlds

Evenepoel swatted aside transfer talk as he looked ahead to Sunday’s explosive showdown. He’s ready to take on the reigning champ Mathieu van der Poel and Slovenian sensation Pogačar on a grueling course in the hills above Lake Zurich .

He’s backed by a stacked Belgian selection that also includes Tim Wellens, Jasper Stuyven, Victor Campenaerts and Tiesj Benoot. Even without the injured Wout van Aert , Evenepoel sounds confident and calculating.

“I can attack on three-quarters of the circuit. The focus is at the beginning of the lap,” Evenepoel said, referring to the hardest climb in the opening kilometers of each lap. “That makes it interesting, because when attacking you have to watch out for counters. There are plenty of opportunities. But it’s still a long time to the finish from then on.”

Evenepoel, already a world champion in 2022, is racing for the rare double-double.

He won gold in both the road race and time trial in the Paris Olympic Games , and then won another world title in elite men’s time trial Sunday.

The Belgian superstar will have a chance to write racing history if he wins Sunday.

Facing off against Pogačar: ‘Even without a top day he can win’

Evenepoel worlds

All eyes are on Pogačar, who will be the five-star favorite Sunday even ahead of Evenepoel.

The Slovenian dynamo is on the verge of becoming the third male rider in history to complete the legendary “Triple Crown” with victories in the Giro d’Italia, Tour de France, and world championships all in one season. Only legends Eddy Merckx and Stephen Roche have achieved this feat, and Pogačar could be next.

Yet Evenepoel has already won the prestigious world title , and the Slovenian hasn’t. Advantage Remco?

“It could cause extra stress for Pogačar,” Evenepoel said. “He might make a mistake or dare to take too many risks. But he is riding at such a high level this year that this will rarely or never happen. He has so much confidence in himself, even without a top day he can win the race.”

Last time where there was a World Championships Road Race with more than 4000 elevation metres (2022 Wollongong : 4167m) Results: Remco Evenepoel 1st Tadej Pogačar 19th Now 2024 Zürich: 4291m … pic.twitter.com/i3tSLsA0WW — Lukáš Ronald Lukács (@lucasaganronald) September 25, 2024

Despite the hype around Pogačar, Evenepoel is ready for a fight.

“The race always has to be ridden. The season is also coming to an end and we will have to see how it goes. The course is 280 kilometers, even riders in top form can crack,” he said. “The race can open up at any time. You have to stay attentive on the entire lap. I have to have confidence in myself and the team.”

With two of the sport’s biggest names colliding on one of the toughest courses of the season, Sunday’s race for the rainbow is set to be a wild and wooly tug-of-war of wills, egos, and watts.

Will Pogačar claim the historic “Triple Crown,” or will Evenepoel steal the show once again? Stay tuned.
