The one exception is that we do not allow bottles of hard liquor  (I know – we wish we could but unfortunately we can’t, sorry!).

You’re also welcome to bring your own food (BYOF) to enjoy on your cruise! We’ve had everything from small snacks to full spreads.   Our boats are outfitted with built-in  cup holders, coolers, USB charging stations, and large Bluetooth speakers to set the vibe with your preferred tunes.

BOOK THIS BOAT!! I booked it for a Sunset Party to celebrate my 30th bday and it did not disappoint. The cruise was wonderful, Lisa and Marque were fantastic hosts!! Our experience with James was nothing short of incredible! We booked a short rental for our engagement pictures session, and James’ boat was beautiful, immaculate, and incredibly picturesque. James was quick and incredibly safe as well as a very skilled captain who accommodated multiple pick ups/drop offs for our shoot and did everything in his power to get the pictures we wanted. We would recommend him for photography or a nice sailing day - we will definitely be back!

GREAT experience!!! Captain Dennis was terrific. He was professional, yet fun & extremely well prepared. The yacht was clean & well maintained with all the amenities that we could ask for. Our only regret is that we did not book a longer cruise on Seas the Day.

Omg we had a great time, Shawn our captain was amazing and fun. We'll definitely do it again. He chargers for our phones, loud speakers etc, he took our pictures and he was flexible with us. It was a great experience P. S. The only rule we didn't like was the no shoes policy especially slippers lol. We thought no shoes meant heels etc so we wore sneakers, slippers etc but it wasn't accepted but once we bypass that, man let the fun begun 😂 😂

We had such a great day on the water, all due to Kingfish Boat Rentals. They were super accommodating, the boat was spacious, clean and comfortable and they did everything to make it a great day for me and my guests. I can't recommend them enough. Great customer service and a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Timely communication via email, flexible with us arriving almost 30 minutes late. Thorough with instructions and answering our questions. Excellent location with next to The Lily Pad. I will definitely use them again in the future!

Excellent pontoon rentals! Just opened in April 2922, I think this is the only real boat rental option at a reasonable price for a few hours for a family or group of people. We took out an 8-person pontoon out for 2 hours, which is a great starter amount of time. There is plenty of time to just cruise around and enjoy the James...but we also rented two paddle boards (for standing, sitting or laying on) that our kids and friend thoroughly enjoyed. We had enough time to go downstream just a little bit (past the power plant and just a bit further ... We decided to go upstream) then back the other way all the way up the 895 bridge. There is a pretty neat little place to see - the home where Jimmy Dean is buried (his "tombstone" is a black and white piano to right of house); I can't recall if he was born and/or lived there not if Jimmy Dean's children still own it but you can't miss the JD initials on on the side of the hill! So generally speaking it's really easy to pilot the pontoon - it does have a decent top speed but not nearly fast. The general rule is to stay in the middle of the river (there could be rocks, etc under the water that isn't visible) but when we wanted to just use the paddleboards or swim around, we went a little to the side and cut off the engine. It isn't easy to stand-up paddleboard; my son and almost all of us tried to only maybe a few seconds but still a lot of fun. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of photos to share since I was driving the pontoon but there were for late May, not too many boats on the James either and the weather was also quite nice! So the business - Tyler is the employee who you interact with and he was excellent to work with. We *thought* we booked it for a Saturday but apparently it was booked Sunday; he worked with us and made it work. The boat rental company offers three types of boats - two 6-person pontoons, two 8-person pontoons and then one larger fishing boat (don't really the details but I recall him saying it's definitely larger but the charter is for I believe 6 people). I know for our 8-person pontoon for 2 hours it costs $300. Each paddleboard is $50 to rent too. I really can't say if this price is great or not, but family that came with us said it sure was a good price!! Definitely recommend highly. I can say it may be a bit hard to get hold of Tyler beforehand, I think arriving there 30mins earlier is all that you'd need but we got there much earlier (thankfully since he didn't expect our reservation). He was readily available for calls or texts during the entire boating time.

Awesome experience! Kingfish was professional and friendly. Made sure all had a safe and fun time. Totally recommend!!

How much does it cost to rent a boat?

The cost to rent a boat depends on whether you are renting for a half-day or a full day, the boat features and the boat size can impact your boat rental price. Rental prices can range from $200 to $1,000 plus depending on the boat rental itself and the length of time of the rental.

How many people can fit on the boat rental?

The number of people who can fit on boat rental largely depends on the boat’s size and how many life jackets are on board. Currently the coast guard allows a maximum of 10-12 people on a Boatsetter boat rental.

How much does it cost to rent a yacht?

How old do you have to be to rent a boat?

Do I need my own insurance to rent a boat?

You do not need boat insurance when renting with Boatsetter. Coverage is provided under the Peer-to-Peer Boat Rental Policy, which is underwritten by GEICO Marine Insurance Company. The policy was written from the ground up as a stand-alone recreational boat rental insurance policy covering the period of time that the boat is being rented and is available for all non-commercially insured boats.

Does Boatsetter screen renters?

Yes. We use a system called Cognito to ensure that payment information matches the renter's identity. We also require renters taking out a captained boat to be at least 18 years old and on a bareboat to be at least 25 years old.

Is listing my boat on Boatsetter free?

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

If you are not comfortable having a renter drive your boat, we have an expansive network of licensed and experienced captains. Once your boat is listed, you can filter through our network of captains and favorite captains in your area that you would like to operate your boat.

Enjoy a Canal Cruise Along the Kanawha Canal in Downtown Richmond

Looking for fun and unique things to do in downtown richmond.

The boat tours travel along downtown Richmond's historic Canal Walk and review centuries of Richmond’s history, from Powhatan’s Chiefdom to the first commercially successful electric streetcar in the world, all while traveling in authentically styled canal boats. Travelers can see the unique Triple Crossing railroad, tobacco warehouses that have been converted into trendy lofts, the Virginia Capital Trail, the Low Line gardens and James River wildlife.

Hourly Historic Tours

40-minute historically narrated tours.

The canal boat tours of the James River and Kanawha Canal operate throughout the season, seven days a week from May through September, and with varying hours in April, October and November.

• Tours depart on the hour from the Canal’s Turning Basin at 139 Virginia Street, in Downtown Richmond, Virginia.
• Tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis at the Turning Basin’s ticket kiosk and online up to 18 hours in advance - HERE .
• Boats can accommodate up to 25 passengers and are accessible to those with physical disabilites.
• No pets are allowed except for registered service animals.

PLEASE NOTE : Even when it appears that tickets may be sold out online, we do still keep a number of walk-up tickets available at the ticket kiosk for each historic tour. Try arriving early or calling 804-649-2800 .

• $1 off historic tour tickets to all teachers, first responders, healthcare workers and military personnel who show a valid work I.D. at the ticket kiosk.

Richmond Private Charters

Private charters are the perfect outing for field trips, celebrations and family gatherings..

Canal cruise private charters are available as one- or two-hour private boat tours that are a favorite for family reunions, celebrating birthdays, engagements, corporate retreats, business groups, churches, clubs and so many more group outings. Private charters may be scheduled for any day and time during the season, but must be reserved a minimum of two weeks in advance.

Customers may choose for their boat ride to be historically narrated, or they can choose to forgo the historic narration and take in the sights while listening to light music over a provided speaker or simply conversing with their fellow guests. The boats can be outfitted with tables of various sizes that can accommodate light refreshments or a more formal, catered meal (catering is not provided by Riverfront Canal Cruises).

Pricing and Guidelines

Your chartered boat(s) may be set up in one of the following (3) configurations:

• Dining style has tables and chairs, seating a maximum of 20 passengers.
• Cocktail style has chairs, benches and a small table, seating a maximum of 22 passengers.
• Excursion style has chairs and benches, seating a maximum of 25 passengers.
• $165 per boat / per hour
• $130 per boat / per hour for seniors and non-profits/educational groups

The 32-foot-long boats are covered with a canopy to protect riders from the weather, but we recommend that all passengers check the weather the day of and dress accordingly. The boats are handicapped accessible and can accommodate up to two wheelchairs.

Charters may be scheduled for any day and time during the boating season, are dependent on weather conditions and are scheduled on an individual basis, subject to availability.

Please book charters a minimum of two weeks in advance. Once scheduled, cruises can be canceled up to 7 days in advance without penalty. All reservations must be made online.

You may hire your own caterer or bring your own food and beverages on your private charter. Riverfront Canal Cruises requires compliance with all applicable Virginia ABC laws and regulations for all private charters that bring alcohol. Unless you have hired a caterer to provide alcoholic beverages, this is likely to include obtaining your own banquet license. Information about the laws and the banquet license application are available on the Virginia ABC website . We do not hire caterers, serve or set up food and beverage service for private charters. We do, however, set up the tables and chairs/benches on the boats in advance of your charter.
