Former Crew Found First Yacht Training Academy in NZ

Alice Baker and Courtney TeWhiu

Associate Editor Aileen Mack joined Dockwalk in July 2018. She is a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. If she’s not at a concert or coffee shop, she is lost in a book, movie or a YouTube rabbit hole. Email Aileen at [email protected] .

After meeting aspiring crew through her company KNOT Yacht Services and receiving lots of questions, Alice Baker and her friend Courtney TeWhiu noticed a gap in the market for aspiring crew in New Zealand. This led them to start KNOT Superyacht Academy in June 2023.

“We want to give those interested in starting a career in the industry the best opportunity to learn the ropes and landing their first job on board,” TeWhiu says.

Baker and TeWhiu have both have had long and successful yachting careers. TeWhiu has been chief on a 50-meter and had lead service roles on vessels up to 87 meters, and Baker started as a stew on a 43-meter but found her place on board cooking on an Atlantic crossing. Their passion for the industry, desire to share it, and seeing others succeed drove them to start the academy.

  • KNOT Yacht Services Assists Vessels in New Zealand

KNOT Superyacht Academy offers internationally recognized yacht certification by International Yacht Training, meaning students walk away with credentials that stack up overseas on their resumes. As the industry becomes more and more competitive, it’s important for crew to start their careers with a good baseline.

“What makes our academy unique is the courses we teach are highly interactive,” Baker says. “We provide a mixture of theory and practical that make the courses highly beneficial and enjoyable for the students.”

Currently, they offer a five-day superyacht interior crew course with VHF radio. Starting in 2024, the academy will offer Powerboat level 1 and 2, advanced cookery, Ships’ Cook Certification, food safety and hygiene, operating full-time with each course running at least once a month. While most courses will be in person to ensure students learn the hands-on skills for each course, some will be available online.

They have studied and trained in the manner they deliver the course content, so it’s taught in an engaging and conversation-based learning environment. “The courses’ practical elements are set up as exact replicas of an onboard experience,” TeWhiu says. “We have excursions, specialists, and live Q&A sessions from current Kiwi yacht crew.”

  • The Money Men Help Kiwis with Finances

The message they’re hoping to convey is that working on board yachts is a career and a team effort, but if you do it correctly, it can set you up for the future, Baker shares.

KNOT Yacht Services takes care of a fleet of luxury pleasure craft, where students can get hands-on land-based experience keeping interiors up to superyacht standard, plus they have day and extended charters on offer, and crew also work at marine industry events. The academy also provides recruitment and works with overseas agencies that will help place crew in jobs directly from NZ.

Captain of S/Y DIANA

Debbie was fantastic and nothing was too much trouble. Debbie helped us with everything from provisioning and laundry to sourcing water sports equipment. Everything was on time and of great quality. Will definitely use her again next time we are in Barbados!

Chef of S/Y Champagne Hippy

Debbie is amazing! I used her services during the time when COVID19 was restricting our movement around Barbados.

I used her for guest and crew provisions.

She communicated very well with me and doesn’t mind to go the extra mile to make sure you get what you need.

Would recommend this company 100%

Chief Stewardess of M/Y Picnic

Debbie at Knotty is amazing, she not only delivered everything we needed for multiple trips during numerous visits to Barbados during the season but she always offered the most friendly and useful local advice, far beyond just a provisioning service. I can not recommend Debbie highly enough and actually hope that she starts offering agency services so that we can all officially make the most of her expertise. 8 knots every beginning sailor should know.

knot yacht services

Knot tying has been around since the beginning of mankind. But it is sailors who turned it into an art form with many practical and decorative uses. There are hundreds of knots, but we will focus on the ones that are most often used on yachts that all beginning sailors should learn and master. These are the essential knots that you’ll learn how to tie in the RYA Competent Crew course.

The bowline is arguably the best-known and most-used knot onboard on yacht. The bowline forms a secure loop and, if properly tied, will not jam. It’s simple to tie and untie. It can easily and sturdily attach a line to any object. You can use a bowline to form a fixed loop at the end of a line creating a strong and reliable hold.

  • Step 1: Form a small loop with a line.
  • Step 2: Pass the end of the line through the loop from the under side.
  • Step 3: Wrap the end around the standing line and back down through the loop.
  • Step 4: Pull on the free end while holding the standing line to tighten the knot.
  • Tip: “The rabbit comes out of the hole, around the tree, and back down the hole.”

2. Clove Hitch

‍ The clove hitch is a simple, all-purpose hitch but should not be trusted in critical applications—it can slip if the post rotates or if constant pressure is not maintained. It’s easy to tie and untie and is a useful binding knot.

  • Step 1: Wrap the free end of a line around a post.
  • Step 2: Cross the line over itself and around the post a second time.
  • Step 3: Slip the working end under the last wrap and pull tightly.

3. Rolling Hitch

The rolling hitch is an easy and secure way to fasten a line to a post. It holds firmly in the direction of the standing line. It is derived from the clove hitch, but is significantly more secure. It is often used to secure the wishbone boom to the mast. It’s reliable, effective, and easy to tie. It grips itself, but only in one direction.

  • Step 1: Wrap the end of the line around the post.
  • Step 2: Repeat the wrap, crossing over the standing line a second time.
  • Step 3: Wrap a third time around the post, but this time above the standing line. Do not cross over it.
  • Step 4: Pass the free end under the last wrap and pull tightly to secure.

4. Cleat Hitch

A cleat hitch is a knot that is used every time to moor your yacht to secure the line to the cleat on a pier or dock. It will safely secure your yacht and is difficult to come untied accidentally, if tied properly.

  • Step 1: Turn the line around the base of the cleat, then bring it back over the top of the cleat.
  • Step 2: Make a figure eight, wrapping the line back under the arm of the cleat opposite the first turn, the back over the top of the cleat.
  • Step 3: Once you have made a double figure eight, form an underhand loop and slip that loop over the arm of the cleat. This pins the free end under the last wrap.

5. Round Turn and Two Half Hitches

When tying mooring lines to rings or for tying a dinghy ashore, the round turn and two half hitch is the perfect knot. Unlike a bowline, it can be released under tension. It is strong, dependable, and never jams. It is also a knot that will support heavy loads.

  • Step 1: Pass the end of the line around the post twice to stabilize the strain while tying the knot.
  • Step 2: Go around the standing end to make the first half hitch. Pull it tight.
  • Step 3: Continue around the same direction to make the second half hitch.
  • Step 4: Pull tightly to secure the knot.

6. Reef Knot

Also known as a square knot, the reef knot can be used for tying the ends of two lines of the same diameter together. It can also be used to tie the foot of the sail that has been reefed. This knot should never be used to tie two lines together that are different sizes—it is unsafe and the lines can pull apart.  Make sure that the standing line and the free end exit the knot together.

  • Step 1: Tie two over hand knots. First, right over left and then twist.
  • Step 2: Then left over right and twist.
  • Step 3: Make sure both parts of the line exit the knot together.

7. Sheet Bend

To join two lines of unequal diameter to make a longer line, use the sheet bend and double sheet bends. It is a suitable knot for most non-critical situations. Be sure that the free ends of both lines of the sheet bend are on the same side as the finished knot. The sheet bend is sometimes called a Weaver’s Knot when it is tied using yarn or twine.

  • Step 1: Form a loop at the end of a line.
  • Step 2: Pass the free end of the line to be joined under the opening of the loop.
  • Step 3: Pass around both parts of the first line and back under itself.
  • Step 4: Pull to tighten all four ends.
  • Step 5: Two wraps around both parts of the first line will create a double sheet bend.

8. Figure of Eight

Used as a stopper knot on the end of a line, the figure of eight is used on halyards to prevent the line from disappearing inside the mast by accident. It can also be used to prevent the end of a line from fraying temporarily.

  • Step 1: Pass the tail over itself to form a loop.
  • Step 2: Continue under and around the standing end.
  • Step 3: Pass the tail down through the loop.

All of these knots are taught in the RYA Competent Crew course and these simple step-by-step instructions can be used as a cheat sheet for practicing. Proper knot tying will make you a valuable member of any sailing crew.

Spain has some of the highest rate sunlight hours in Europe, with the towns and cities lying on the Mediterranean benefiting from the sunshine without suffering from the infamously excessive heat of the Iberian peninsula. Under the Sail: The Mechanics of Boat Movement

Sailing is an exciting combination of science and art that takes us on a voyage of exploration where the wind and water become partners in a dance with the elements. At the core of this captivating activity is the sail, a remarkable feat of design that elegantly captures the wind's energy, transforming it into forward momentum. This blog serves as a beginner's guide to the fascinating world of sailing, offering a window into the intricate mechanics of how sails harness wind power. Whether you're a novice sailor, eager to learn the ropes, or simply curious about the principles that make a sailboat glide across the water, you'll find some valuable insights here. As we dive deeper into the art of sailing, we uncover not just the technical aspects but also the sheer joy and freedom that come from skillfully navigating the winds and waves. So, let's start this journey and explore the magic and mechanics of sailing.

Types of Sails and How They are Used

Every sail is not created equally. Some smaller yachts have only one sail, which makes sail selection a breeze. However, larger sailboats have several sails with dozens of different sail configurations. When learning to sail, it’s important to understand the different types of sails and how they are used. For example, if you want to go downwind faster, use a spinnaker. If you are headed upwind, you may want a code zero. In other words, different conditions require different types of sails with different characteristics.

Types of Sailing Rigs

Rigging and sails are closely related, and all are part of a yacht’s overall sail plan. There are dozens of types of sails and literally hundreds of various configurations. A sail rig is the way that the sails are attached to the mast. It is the setup or configuration of the sailboat and consists of the sail and mast hardware. It can get confusing. For example, the shape of sails depends on the rigging, so they overlap a bit. In this article, we will explore the most commonly-used modern sail rigs.

The Shift of Tides: How Seasons Affect the Sea and Sailing on it around Mallorca

“The tides are in our veins.” – Robinson Jeffers Those who wander onto the sea's vast expanse have long been fascinated by its rhythm. These tidal nuances intermingle with seasonal changes all across the coastal Northern Hemisphere. While the serene blue waters invite many, understanding the undercurrents of the seasons and their impact on sailing becomes paramount. 9 Essential Knots Every Sailor Should Know

Bights, Bends, and Bitter Ends by Bill Ibsen – NauticEd Sailing Instructor

Sailing knots are nothing short of mechanical genius. It’s not just that these knots hold fast; they can also be easily untied under load or once the load is eased. Unlike the overhand knots we tied in our sneakers as kids, which sometimes became nearly impossible to untie, many sailors’ knots can hold hundreds or even thousands of pounds of force yet remain relatively easy to untie.

Much like the elegant simplicity of a hairpin design, many of these 9 essential knots are as simple in form as possible. There’s a unique beauty in their design. I marvel at every correctly tied Trucker’s Hitch I create, both mechanically and aesthetically.

If you think my knot passion is a bit much, consider Clifford W. Ashley. His 1944 compilation, The Ashley Book of Knots , is esteemed as the definitive book on knots. He spent eleven years identifying and sketching 3,900 knots with 7,000 illustrations. If this article ropes in your interest, I highly recommend buying his humor-filled book, which details “every practical knot—what it looks like, who uses it, where it comes from, and how to tie it.”

For most readers, this article serves as a quick primer on the world of knots—some of which date back to ancient Egypt. If you’re skeptical, check out this photo I took at the Great Pyramids where archaeologists found a Pharaoh’s Nile River transport vessel sporting at least a square knot. We’re tying knots today as part of a long nautical tradition.

Egyptian Vessels included Square Knots

Understanding Knots and Lines

Lines have many fascinating features (who would have thought that something as simple as a line would have parts!). Check out the image below, and you’ll quickly grasp the concepts. But first, here are several quick tips:

  • A “knot” is formed by tying a line to itself.
  • A “hitch” makes a rope fast to another object.
  • A “bend” joins two lines together.
  • The “bitter end” of a line refers to the tail end of a line that fastens to the vessel but is often used to refer to the end of a line or its “working end.”
  • A “bight” is not a “loop”—they are different. A bight becomes a loop when the two lines cross.
  • Overhand loops are also called “traps” as they are often used to trap a bight, as in a Trucker’s Hitch.

Now, study this picture to get a tighter grasp of knot anatomy:

Details on how to understand knots and lines

1. Cleat Hitch

My most frequently tied knot. Every time you pick up a mooring ball, you’ll tie two cleat hitches. You’ll also use it every time you secure your dinghy to a cleat on your moored yacht. That’s why the cleat hitch is #1 on my list.

Hey, did you know that cleats have discrete parts, too! They have “horns” connected to “shoulders” which is fairly self-explanatory if you just look at the overall shape.

Animated Knots offers two versions of cleat hitches: “dock lines” and “halyards.” NauticEd and other sailing schools teach the “halyard” version for docking. My friend, Captain Jeremy Elwell, confirms that his 36” sailboat remained securely tethered to the dock during 2018 Hurricane Michael’s category 5 winds (peaking at 160 mph) as it made landfall, thanks to the halyard version of the cleat hitch.

But if you’ve got a large boat (60’+), you may want to use Animated Knots Cleat Hitch (Docking Version) which substitutes lots of cute little figure-8’s in lieu of the “halyard” version’s final locking hitch, which indeed can get jammed under heavy loads like 40+ knot winds securing a 50’ catamaran with lots of windage. The many figure-8 wraps are super easy to untie under heavy load.

  • Always initiate the cleat hitch by wrapping the line around the FAR shoulder of the cleat relative to the direction of load.
  • The finished product should look like “two roads under a bridge.”
  • The input and output lines should enter/exit on opposite sides of the cleat. If they exit from the same side, try re-tying it.

2. Round Turn and Two Half Hitches

If the round turn and two-half hitch was a baseball player, it would be considered a “utility player” because it can play so many different positions very well. Use it to secure your dinghy painter to the dinghy dock. Use it to tie your fenders to the lifelines – because you don’t trust the clove hitch to hold fast your heavy fenders. Use it to stern-tie your catamaran to a big rock or tree ashore.

A workhorse knot that does not slip or bind under load. Use a bowline to tie jib sheets to the jib clew, or to join two lines.

Etymology : The bowline has been in use for thousands of years, but the name first appeared in written English in 1627, when one John Smith called it the “Boling Knot.”

Engineering Note: Bowline knots break at about 70-75% of the line’s full strength. For example, a 3/4” nylon double braid dock line with a breaking strength of about 19,000 lbs. could take over 13,000 lbs. to break with a properly executed bowline knot.

Animated Knots notes that the bowlines’ “principal shortcoming is that it cannot be tied, or untied, when there is a load on the standing end. It should therefore be avoided when, for example, a mooring line may have to be released under load.”

A memorable method to tie a bowline is: “The squirrel goes through the hole, around the back of the tree, and back through the hole.”

Note: If you’ve got a long, relatively thick (e.g. 3/4” diameter) double-line dinghy painter, tying a “bowline on a bight” is a great way to quickly tie up to a dinghy dock or dock pylon, and not have to hassle with all the extra length of line. Just tie a normal bowline midway on the line using the double line as if it were just a single line.

Also, watch how to tie a Bowline on a Bight

4. Figure 8

This simple knot is used as a stopper knot on the end of a line, such as a jib sheet led through a fairlead or cam cleat. It prevents the line from whipping loose in a gust of wind, potentially smacking you or your crew in the face or elsewhere.

More info at https://www.animatedknots.com/figure-8-knot

5. Trucker’s Quick Release Hitch

Both sailors and truckers use this handy knot to cinch down a load. Sailors use it to secure a dinghy on the foredeck or for tying up a paddleboard to the lifelines. Its cinching power can create a 2:1 or even 3:1 purchase. Secure the hitch with two half hitches around the purchase.

More info at https://www.animatedknots.com/truckers-hitch-knot-quick-release

6. Sheet Bend

Use this to join two lines of unequal or similar size. The thicker diameter line must be used for the simple bight.

Sheet Bend Knot

More info at https://www.animatedknots.com/sheet-bend-knot

7. Clove Hitch

This hitch can be tied to a lifeline, pylon, or piling and is often used to tie smaller fenders to lifelines. It is quick to tie but not very reliable under load and can be hard to undo.

More info at https://www.animatedknots.com/clove-hitch-knot-rope-end

8. Square (or Reef) Knot

If your boat’s mainsail has a sail bag with shoelace-like ties, square knots are a tidy solution for securing the bag.

More info at https://www.animatedknots.com/square-knot

9. Rolling Hitch

Use this knot to apply a load to another line or a bar. It is useful for fixing an override in your winch by pulling out the jammed line below some of the wraps around the winch. The knot can slide down the line yet grip when pulled in the direction of the turns (i.e. the direction in which you’ll apply the load).

Conclusion +BONUS VID

Now, with these knots mastered, you’re ready to take on the high seas with confidence and flair. So, grab your captain’s hat, light up that pipe, and pull out your rum keg for a well-deserved seat. Practice these knots on the dock with an air of nautical wisdom (an eye-patch and parrot on your shoulder will only add to the mystique). If nothing else, you’ll become the dockside knot-tying legend, mesmerizing kids, and earning the respect (and possibly envy) of your fellow sailors. Who knows, maybe they’ll even start calling you the “Knotorious Captain” !

Happy knotting and smooth sailing!

Bonus content: Watch this Moorings charters dockmaster in Tahiti tie a fender to the lifelines in a clever way which allows the knot to be quickly released yet remains secure.
