Wianno Senior

The classic Wianno Senior is a gaff-rigged sloop designed and built by Crosby Yacht since the early 1900s. Crosby was commissioned by a group of local sailors to create a class of sailboats uniquely designed for the local waters and sufficient for convenient one-design racing.

Her full keel and deep draft adjustable centerboard are perfect for the shoal-ridden sailing grounds common on the Southside of Cape Cod. Her graceful overhanging stern and gently curved bow harken back to a time when designers used their eye instead of computers for perfect shapes.

The large cockpit is perfect for daysailing with friends and family. Under deck provides a sitting headroom with two full-length integral bunks. There is ample space for sails and gear storage. To keep with the times, maintain construction economies and promote the life of the Wianno Senior class, the transition to fiberglass was begun in the 1980s. All visible wood components on a wooden Wianno Senior are wood on the new fiberglass Wianno Senior being built today. Through this effort, the character, appearance, and tradition of the Wianno Senior continues into the new century.

Aficionados of classic daysailers and racing classes, like us, are always drawn to the combination of long ends, a round-front cabin trunk, and low, sleek topsides. These elements are present in many of the designs you will find on this site. The Wianno Senior is what you get when you take those characteristics and apply them to a design for shallow water. A beamy and full-ended centerboarder, the Wianno is stiff and is best sailed “on her feet,” which makes for relatively comfortable sailing.

A self-bailing cockpit makes her safe in rough water, and the boats are driven very hard in active local racing in Massachusetts. Wiannos have relatively long cabin trunks, and berths, but the cabin is partly consumed by the centerboard trunk, and as cruising boats they are for the young and limber, who have certainly used them for that purpose and hopefully always will.

Fast and powerful, they make for exciting sailing, and a Wianno would be a good choice for any shallow water area. We are particularly excited about the possibility of building new boats for the Massachusetts fleets, so the class can continue to prosper in years to come.

Wianno Senior built by Crosby in 1948. These classic wooden boats are still raced in Cape Cod (JFK raced them too), but this was modified from the original 25’. In about 2007 the boat had its stern extended into a beautiful overhang. An outboard motor well was added. The original transom remains forward of the extension.

The deck was redone in teak and a bow spirit and a hatch were added.

Two big winches were added along with a self tacking cutter rig jib with a job boom.

The mahogany hull was covered in fiberglass. Currently the deck needs work especially in the forward portion.

The hull is probably good, but the mast may needs repair. The lines of this boat are hard to match.

The trailer pictured is available for an additional $900. It has 4 new tires.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

• D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
• LOA: Length overall in feet
• Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

The WIANNO SENIOR Knockabout was designed as a one-design day sailer for summer residents of Wianno, Cape Cod, and has remained the principal one-design class of the Wianno Yacht Club. Additional fleets were subsequently organized at the Hyannis, Hyannis Port, Bass River and Stone Horse Yacht Clubs. The original builder was the Crosby Yacht Building and Storage Co. in Osterville Mass, Cape Cod. The boat has remained a popular and competitive class on Nantucket Sound. Since 1914, about 180 boats have been built. Recent boats are of Fiberglass. About 140 still exist today.

In the Fall of 1913 a group of sailing enthusiasts on the south coast of Cape Cod (Massachusetts), all members of the Wianno Yacht Club, asked Manley Crosby, of the Crosby Boat Building Storage Company, Osterville, to build a small racing day-sailor, suitable for the difficult local conditions, characterised by strong winds and tidal currents and frequent unmarked sandy shallows. This is how the Wianno Senior “knockabout” came into being, named after the small village of Wianno, so called from the native American chief of the Iyanough tribe, from whom the area had been bought by the first settlers in 1664.

The Wianno Senior is 25 feet long and 8 feet wide, with an oak keel with cast iron ballast and a movable wooden centreboard. The first 14 were built by Crosby in the winter of 1913-14 and sold at the agreed figure of just over $600. Until the 1980s, the boats were built with oak frames and mahogany planking, deck and cockpit in cypress boards covered with waxed cloth and sitka spruce spars. In 1927 the rudder was lengthened and in 1928 running backstays were added to hoist a 269 square foot spinnaker with spinnaker pole which originally was more than 13 feet long, later reduced to 9 feet to be more practical.

The Wianno Senior met expectations from the very beginning, as can be seen from a 1915 review in The Rudder magazine: “In performance, the boats have fully come up to their requirements. They have shown themselves able, stiff and seaworthy, they take sound waves without plunging or “slapping”. In speed they have been an agreeable surprise, for in a series of Interclass races pitted against boats designed by Herreshoff and Lawley they stood up for themselves, winning in all sea and wind conditions.”

• An island off the coast of Mahone Bay in Nova Scotia, Canada, is for sale for $7.3 million.
• Strum Island has a luxurious lodge and amenities for guests who want to escape a stressful world.
• The current owner won't be able to spend as much time there and has listed it for $7.3 million.

A private island off the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada, is on the market at $9.95 million Canadian dollars, or about $7.3 million.

Strum Island is home to a luxurious lodge, and visitors can use the grounds for hunting, sailing, or just entertaining family and friends.

The 10-acre property is one of over 350 islands in Mahone Bay, which is about an hour's drive from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The current owner, Richard Goldenberg, told Business Insider that people currently pay to stay on the island like they do for a hotel.

Goldenberg said that the original developer thought Strum Island was beautiful — one of the few spots from which you could see and easily access the nearby town of Mahone Bay.

According to listing agent Mariana Cowan, of Coldwell Banker Maritime Realty, the property was conceived by its original owner as an escape from 9/11-era fears and stresses.

"That was the initial reason why he built the home, post-9/11, to have that getaway. That was very important to him as the initial developer of the property," Cowan told the National Post . "That is how it came about — to build this wonderful property as a safe haven."

Goldenberg also noted that whoever purchases the island could live there if they wanted to.

It's one of the closest islands to the mainland, making it ideal for anyone who doesn't want to be too far from civilization. But because of some of the island's features — from gardens to fishing opportunities — you might not ever have to leave.

The developer purchased Strum Island in 2001 and started construction on the lodge in 2003.

The seawall was the first major step in construction. It's made up of a circle of five- to 10-ton boulders that surround the island.

The property took about 16 years to complete.

After construction finished in 2019, Goldenberg became a partner.

One of the obstacles to building on an island is that you must travel back and forth between the mainland for materials and supplies.

"Most of the stuff comes in on a barge," Goldenberg said. "The barge loads up the building material, brings it over to the island, and then it's used for construction."

The main lodge is 9,500 square feet.

The lodge has six bedrooms, each with its own bathroom.

There is also a two-story guest house.

There's another building on the island that has two apartments used for staff, according to Goldenberg, that can also be used to house even more guests.

The staff were provided by the property management and did cleaning, laundry, and cooking.

The island is only a three-minute boat ride from the mainland.

The town of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, one of the closest access points to the mainland, can be seen from the island.

Nearby Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, which is classified as a historic site by UNESCO, is only a 12-minute drive away from the dock on the mainland.

The property is being sold with two boats included, the listing says.

All the furniture is also included in the purchase price.

If you want an even faster mode of transport, there’s a helicopter landing pad on the island.

Strum Island is about 70 miles from Halifax Stanfield International Airport, the closest major airport.

There’s an undersea cable connecting the island to the mainland’s power grid.

There are also propane generators to provide backup electricity just in case the power goes out.

The property has its own well, so visitors are not reliant on the mainland for water.

There's an aquifer under the island that supplies the island with water.

There's a sewage system underground as well.

There are also gardens to grow your own food.

There are over 50,000 plants on the island and a greenhouse on the property as well as a vegetable garden with blackberries, strawberries, and more.

Fishing also provides another way to secure food without traveling to the mainland.

"There are an abundant number of different species of fish there at different times of the year that can easily be caught from there," Goldenberg said.

"There are fishing companies that will be happy to pick up guests right up the island and take them out for day trips to go fishing," he added.

If the weather gets turbulent, there are double-paned windows to protect from wind.

There are also three different types of heating systems in case it gets chilly.

The average annual temperature in Mahone Bay is 64 degrees.

"The current it has comes from the south, so it's probably a little bit cooler than Cape Cod," Goldenberg said.
