A woman has been rescued while the search for a man continues after the pair were reported missing from a sinking vessel in water off Queensland’s Fraser Island.

Two people were on board the vessel of the northern tip of the island, also known as K’gari, when they radioed for help about 8.30pm on Sunday, police said.

Police and volunteer marine services began an air and water search before rescue helicopter crews plucked the woman from the water about 11.30am on Monday.

She will be airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital for treatment.

The search involving multiple aircraft and vessels continues for a missing male.

THREE men have been rescued after their boat sank off Fraser Island early this morning.

The Volunteer Marine Rescue Hervey Bay said the men are safe and currently on a vessel being towed back to the harbour after the incident at Yankee Jack Creek.

Their vessel began taking on water around 3am.

"Their boat was sinking, they were transferred to a tender and our rescue vessel is down there now and towing it back to the harbour," a radio operator said.

"They weren't in the water, they got in the boat and now safely aboard."

Elsewhere, two fishermen have escaped injury after their boat sank in waters north of Cooktown last night.

Police received a call about 7.10pm from a 11m vessel that was sinking approximately two nautical miles on the eastern side of Two Isles.

Two other vessels that were in the area set off to assist the boat.

"Two people on board were recovered by (one of the vessels) and taken to meet the coastguard and then to shore where they were looked at by QAS," a police spokeswoman said.

"They never entered the water and weren't injured, but the vessel did sink."

Qlders need better transparency about how much the 50c fare relief will cost, who is actually getting the benefits and where else we could spend these public funds, writes economist Colin Dwyer.

A young woman has sustained spinal injuries following a skydiving incident in Queensland’s south on Sunday.

An RACQ CareFlight Rescue spokeswoman said the Bundaberg crew performed a daring winch rescue over open water. She said the 60-year-old man was fishing when the 7.3m vessel began taking on water. "The boat is believed to have sunk sometime between 4am and 5am," the spokeswoman said. RACQ CareFlight Rescue was called into the search and rescue operation about 5.30am after a beacon signal was activated. She said the man was spotted by the helicopter service, wearing a life jacket, about 15-20km off the western point of Fraser Island. RACQ CareFlight Rescue's aircrewman was winched down to the man, before he was safely winched aboard the helicopter. The spokeswoman said he suffered suspected hypothermia and was airlifted to Hervey Bay Hospital in a stable condition.

California yacht sinks after fireworks explode, blaze breaks out on video, luxury yacht explodes fireworks, live ammo onboard ... sinks after 2 hours.

091924_boat_fire_kal

A luxury yacht sank off the coast of Los Angeles ... taking on water after a ton of fireworks blasted off from the deck.

In a scene straight out of the film "Battleship," firefighters responded to the Marina del Rey harbor Wednesday night to fight a blaze consuming a 120-foot-yacht ... with news crews on hand to film the blaze.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v1

Check out the video ... the fire squadrons gave it all they got -- but, it's pretty clearly a lost cause, with smoke billowing out from the ship.

As for the cause of the fire .... that's still under investigation -- but, just before it kicked off, fireworks launched off the ship and exploded just above, so it certainly seems like a magical moment gone wrong.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v3

BTW ... authorities say there were also 1,000 rounds of ammunition on the boat -- unclear why or what kind. Authorities also say there were two people on the ship at the time. Both survived, with one sustaining minor injuries.

Unfortunately, there was no chance for firefighters to save this ship from the Titanic's fate ... the yacht sank about two hours after the fire started.

091924-boat-fire-smoke-v4

Like we said, investigators are still looking into how the fire started ... though we can't imagine fireworks and live ammo are a fire marshal-approved combo.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 2 US citizens among missing after luxury yacht sinks off Sicily

15 people were rescued and one body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, by andrea rosa and nicole winfield | the associated press • published august 19, 2024 • updated on august 19, 2024 at 6:21 pm.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury sailing yacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy’s civil protection and authorities said. Lynch’s wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was  acquitted in June  in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, when a tornado over the water known as a waterspout struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily’s civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

24/7 New York news stream: Watch NBC 4 free wherever you are

It had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and struck the place precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

“They were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” said Cocina, noting that another superyacht nearby wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue some of the 15 survivors, who included Lynch's wife Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast — one of the world’s tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported, quoting the mother. The father, James Emsley, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson. The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Francesco Cefalu’ said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

“But for the rest, we didn’t find anyone,” he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. “I think they are inside, all the missing people.”

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

“It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don’t know,” he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was “providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families.”

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain’s king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard’s $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not-guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP’s  2011 acquisition  of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The  fraud accusations  represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain — a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

“I’m looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field,” Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

All About Fraser Island

Everything a visitor needs to know

The Shipwrecks on Fraser Island

October 5, 2022 by Ursula Boston

Fraser Island is a place of shipwrecks. The island, about 100 kilometres from the coast of Queensland, Australia, has been shaped by the forces of nature and man.

It is believed that from 1856 to 1935 that there were about 23 different wrecks submerged or grounded around Fraser Island waters.

The maheno

The Maheno Shipwreck on Fraser Island

The Sandy Cape Lighthouse was built in 1870. It operates still today as a navigation beacon. Since its commission, the wreckages have been fewer as it was made easier for Captains to Navigate between Fraser Island and Little Woody Island.

Here are some of the commonly known shipwrecks on Fraser island.

The Maheno map

The Maheno Shipwreck

The majestic “Maheno” Shipwreck has a fascinating history and a great story. It’s a must-see icon of the island that will also provide brilliant photographs, especially at sunrise and sunset.

When you consider the rusty old relic was once a luxury passenger liner with polished timbers, crystal chandeliers, exquisite china, and a grand piano it’s difficult to fathom that now it’s just a rusted old wreck.

This ship carried over 300 wealthy passengers in luxury. Now it’s just laying on 75 Mile Beach on Fraser Island.

The wreck is positioned along 75 Mile Beach just near the Pinnacles. Over the years it continues to be pounded by waves with the incoming tides.

Slowly but surely it is being devoured by the corroding salt and sea spray.

yacht sinks off fraser island

But the colourful history of this shipwreck makes for a great story.

In the beginning, she served the Trans-Tasman ocean route as a luxury passenger liner in her early years and later served as a hospital ship in WWI.

On her retirement, she was sold to Japan for scrap metal. On 9th July 1953, she was being towed up the eastern coastline from Sydney when a cyclone hit.

The severe rough seas snapped the tow rope and she drifted helplessly.

This was the beginning of her fateful demise as she washed up on the beach on Fraser Island.

Since this tragic ending, most of her interior was either salvaged or scavenged by others on the island.

Fortunately, in recent years lots of items have been located and donated back to the island to be preserved in a mini museum display at Happy Valley.

It is truly interesting to see all the memorabilia and read in-depth about Maheno’s history.

And what is even better is to actually visit this shipwreck.

Unfortunately, it is inevitable that the wrecks days are numbered as it is fast deteriorating, so if you have the chance start planning an amazing holiday to Fraser Island to see this iconic shipwreck along with all the other fascinating attractions on the island.

The Panama, one of Fraser Island’s best-known shipwrecks, was an American sailing vessel that met its fate in 1864 near Rooney’s Point.

After the sailing ship battled the furious waters of the Breaksea Spit, it was wrecked. The majority of crew members and passengers opted to settle on the beach after the shipwreck.

However, when Aboriginal tribes raided their camp and took their possessions, they were driven back aboard. The Aborigines also tried to board the ship, but the crew successfully fended them off.

To prevent future problems, the skipper, along with a few crew members, climbed into a lifeboat and were quickly rescued not far from Woody Island.

The Sterling Castle

The Sterling Castle, which was sunk in 1836 as it collided with a reef north of Fraser Island, is one of the most famous shipwrecks on Fraser Island.

The ship carried among its passenger Captain James Fraser, after whom the island was eventually named.

Both the Captain and his wife, Eliza, survived to Waddy Point, where they were eventually rescued.

The remains of the ship were actually discovered in the area by Aborigines, who then buried them. The crew perished after a few weeks among the indigenous people, but Captain Fraser died soon afterwards.

Eliza Fraser lived with the locals for several months before being discovered, along with three-stranded castaways.

She returned to her hometown, where she rapidly became a celebrity.

In the township of Orchid Beach, she has a road named after her ” Eliza Avenue ” and also another road ” Sterling Castle” in honour of this shipwreck.

The Seabelle

The Seabelle was one of the first vessels to sink off the coast of Fraser Island, according to historical records.

The inaugural voyage of the Seabelle began in 1844, when it was a 158-ton vessel that sank near the northern coast of Fraser Island in March 1857.

According to reports, a woman and her two daughters were able to flee the wreckage and found refuge among the natives.

However, according to other records, the three of them were albinos.

A Captain was hired to capture and transport the two albino girls back to Sydney where they were admitted to a mental asylum. They were never reunited with their mother and unfortunately perished at the asylum.

An aerial shot of the Marloo shipwreck of the beach – Fraser Island

Marloo Shipwreck

The Marloo Wreck is located off the coast of Orchid beach. The wreck is generally visible as you descend the jump-up to Orchid beach.

The shipwreck is of the merchant’s vessel the SS Marloo. The steamer was built in 1891 and was later wrecked in 1914.

This is a popular fishing and diving spot for the locals of Orchid beach.

Wrapping it up

Shipwrecks are a common occurrence on Fraser Island, due to the island’s location near the Breaksea Spit.

The Maheno Shipwreck is one of the most well-known shipwrecks on Fraser Island and certainly one of the most photographed in the world. Just take a look on Instagram.

This old wreck is slowly being consumed by the sea and the sand so the advice is that if you want to get over to the island better do it now and start planning.

Another interesting fact is that even to this day there have been many yachts that have had a fateful demise around the island.

One ran aground at Waddy Point and another struck a Humpback whale and sank close to Platypus Bay.

The moral of the story, the waters surrounding Fraser Island are treacherous.

If you are interested in shipwrecks take a trip to Fraser Island, it is an amazing history lesson.

Man rescued after boat strikes whale and sinks off Queensland's Fraser Island

Topic: Disasters, Accidents and Emergency Incidents

A boatie has been rescued after his boat hit a whale and sank, leaving him floating alone in the water for more than two hours, off the western side of Queensland's Fraser Island.

The 42-year-old man, who was wearing a life jacket, made a distress call to authorities just after 3:00am on Sunday as his eight-metre boat was sinking.

A search was launched involving a rescue helicopter, Queensland Water Police and Volunteer Marine Rescue.

The helicopter spotted the man floating in the water about 4:30am, with the Queensland Water Police then able to find him and bring him back to the mainland.

Hervey Bay Water Police officer Senior Constable Craig Collings said the emergency beacon signal was located in the Platypus Bay area.

"The police vessel was underway and arrived on scene about 5:10am," he said.

"He had an injury to his upper left arm and rib area so it was a little difficult to get him into the vessel.

"He was quite fatigued and relieved at the same time and also suffering a bit of hypothermia.

"With the effects of the cold, [it] was a little bit difficult to get to much information from the gentleman."

Senior Constable Collings said Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) officers then arrived on a second boat to treat the man at the scene.

"Once the QAS officers treated the gentleman, he certainly recovered reasonably quickly," he said.

The man was then taken to Hervey Bay hospital, south of Bundaberg.

A hospital spokesperson said the 42-year-old was in a stable condition and under observation.

Hervey Bay Marine Rescue spokeswoman Jill Barclay said the man was very lucky but well prepared, given his predicament.

"He was in the water and able to activate his emergency positioning beacon and police put a helicopter up and found him in the water," she said.

The man spent more than two hours in the water in the dark before being picked up by a police launch.

All those involved in the rescue said the man had luck on his side, given it was dark.

The man was also wearing a life jacket with a flashing light.

"It's pretty difficult — we are very lucky that he had a distress beacon on him that he activated," Ms Barclay said.

Fears whale may be 'seriously hurt'

There has been no sighting of the whale involved in the incident, but boaties have been urged to keep an eye out for a whale with possible injuries.

Marine biologist Yvonne Miles, who is based at Hervey Bay working with Whale Song Cruises, said there was concern there would now be an injured whale in the bay.

"There is a high likelihood we will now have an injured whale with a blunt-force trauma from the boat." she said.

"If the boat has smashed up, then that whale is going to be seriously hurt."

Ms Miles said she had spoken to a few of the local whale boat operators to keep their eyes open to see "if they find any whale in serious trouble".

"I just don't understand why you would be travelling at speed at three o'clock in the morning," she said.

"Hervey Bay is a place where the mums and calves come to rest and feed up and grow.

"If you're not from the area possibly this could happen, but if you are local, then this really should not happen.

"He must have been travelling fast, because whales won't breach at that time of night — they are not active at night — so to be actually hit by a whale would be very unlikely."

'Not something that happens regularly'

It is not the first whale strike in the Wide Bay, which is one of Australia's top destinations to see humpback whales.

"It's not something that happens regularly but we do hear of it occasionally — usually the whales are pretty aware of boaties around them," Ms Barclay said.

Last year, six men in a boat were thrown into the air by a breaching whale near Gloucester Island in Queensland's Whitsundays region .

Two of the men were knocked unconscious with one suffering facial injuries.

Maritime Safety Queensland said just 11 whale strikes had been officially reported in the four years to 2016.

But that figure is likely to go up given the increasing numbers of whales migrating up the Queensland coast each year.

I'm not sure the vessel was hull up as the video is not of sufficient quality and the girl said that she saw the yacht sink. People on the Clansman Facebook site reckon they know the guy so apparently it really was a Clansman. As has been noted these have integral long keels and are therefore highly unlikely to lose a keel and invert. If full of water they would just sink right side up as the girl said.

Big waves around Fraser at that time. Also lost a great cat on Yamba bar - Wahoo - with no loss of life, but the cat capsized and broke up. Also tales of hairy Wide Bay bar crossings. Wave rider buoy had peaks of 4-5 m waves, so big conditions out there. www.qld.gov.au/environment/coasts-waterways/beach/monitoring/waves-sites/wide-bay

HEAR IT FROM OUR GUESTS

Our family of 3 enjoyed the best holiday experience during our 6 nights aboard Indigo last week. Even right from the start of our booking process last year, our enquiries were always answered promptly and with helpful info. The boat is well maintained- everything worked as it should and we enjoyed a fabulous time on the waters inside of Fraser Is. We are already planning 2 further trips for next year! Kathy - Google

Wow....how amazing was that experience? We sailed out of Hervey Bay Mariner Saturday 23 September and just had the best 3 days out on the boat. The scenery was amazing and the ever-changing conditions just meant there was something new on each turn of the wheel. Oh and the whales ...how spectacular! We hired Aquila Sunrise - a very luxurious vessel and just so simple to operate - within the first half hour all my fears of having to drive a big boat were allayed. Scott and Mal made everything so simple and easy. Will definitely be coming back! Robert - Google

My husband and I chartered “Alida” for 5 nights. From my initial enquiry through to the finalisation of our charter Steph, Scott and Michael were professional, courteous and helpful throughout. The catamaran was well maintained, prepared and so clean and tidy which we appreciated. If we could give more stars we would. We had a blast - the weather was perfect, we had wind every day and the sunsets were sublime. We loved it so much we are looking to return in the Christmas holidays and will stay longer (yes, it was THAT good!). Carol - Google

Dramatic footage has captured the moment a 40-metre superyacht sank into the Mediterranean sea after being battered in a storm.

The 40-metre-long luxury vessel was sailing from Gallipoli to Milazzo overnight on Saturday when it got into trouble around 15km from Italy’s Catanzaro Marina.

Footage shows the yacht, named My Saga, rapidly disappearing beneath waves, as lifeboats appear to float beside it.

The captain sent out a distress call to the Port Authority of Crotone, with officials told the yacht was taking on a significant amount of water from the stern.

The Italian coastguard dispatched two patrol vessels and rescued all four passengers and five crew members on board.

A tugboat sent out at dawn was unable to save the superyacht from sinking because of worsening weather conditions, the Super Yacht Times reports. The Saga finally sank at around 1pm on Sunday.

The outlet reports the yacht, which was built in Monaco back in 2007, was flying under the Cayman Islands flag with an all-Italian crew when it sunk.

An investigation has been launched into the cause.

The yacht named My Saga sank on Saturday

It comes after a £6 million superyacht sunk after it went up in flames in the UK on the Torquay harbourside.

The 85ft vessel was consumed by fire , with thick black smoking billowing into the sky.

The yacht reportedly drifted out into the harbour after the fire burnt through ropes securing it to the pier, but the vessel was later secured by the fire service.

A fire service statement revealed that the vessel contained approximately 8000 litres of diesel fuel.

yacht sinks off fraser island

Door left open thought to be cause of sinking of luxury £16m superyacht off Greek island

Footage has emerged of the moment a £16 million luxury Italian superyacht sunk off the coast of a Greek island .

The 47-metre yacht was spotted lurching to one side when sailing near Paliokaravo Bay, Kefalonia, which is west of the Greek mainland.

Five tourists and five crew members were successfully evacuated from the vessel as it ran aground in Evretis Bay where it then anchored, according to local outlet Gazetta .

One of the crew members reportedly left a side door open allowing an influx of water when the weather in the area “turned”, Greek website Protothema reported.

The crew did not notice the open door until it was too late and the vessel, called Ethos, had started sinking.

Safety systems were activated effectively and the crew of Ethos - which was flying the flag of Malta - disembarked without any injury.

A private boat at the scene helped to tug the yacht as two harbour guards oversaw the operation, with a professional diver expected to inspect the underside of the boat.

Earlier this year the boat underwent renovation after being purchased for $16 million by its new owner, who received the yacht in September last year.

Ethos was built in 2014 by Admiral and can host up to 12 guests and nine crew members onboard its steel and aluminium structure.

Renters can enjoy stays with a gym, jacuzzi, steam room and jetskis onboard the yacht - but will have to fork out a huge £180,000 to do so for a week.

The upper deck boasts a master suite, a vast dining area, Turkish bath and a Sauter piano - but the luxury vessel will be out of action for the foreseeable future as work gets underway to pump the water out of the boat.

It comes just days after a yacht turned on its side entirely off Chesapeake Bay in the US state of Maryland, with five people on board as the 122-foot boat turned on its side.

The yacht sunk in just five minutes with passengers having to be rescued from the water after they abandoned ship on Saturday. No casualties were reported.
