The best explorer yachts for adventurous charters

Related articles, superyacht directory.

From heli-skiing in North Kamchatka to scuba diving in the Red Sea, the possibilities are endless when chartering an explorer yacht. Equipped with ice-breaking hulls, transoceanic cruising ranges and toy boxes fit for adrenaline-pumping activities, explorers are designed to travel to the farthest corners of the globe and offer guests the adventure of a lifetime. To mark the launch of this year's Explorer Yachts Summit, BOAT International takes a look at the best explorer yachts on the charter market , starting with the legendary 126.2-metre Octopus ...

Stats: 126.2 metres, Lürssen , 2003, 12 guests, 45 crew

Expedition capabilities: With an ice-class hull and cruising range of 12,500 nautical miles, the iconic Octopus is more than capable of reaching the earth’s most remote corners. She’s got just the right kit for off-the-grid adventures too, offering two helipads, an ROV, Triton submarines, a fully-equipped dive centre, seven tenders and her own float-in tender garage.

Home comforts: With an interior volume of 9,932 GT there’s more than enough space on this superyacht for luxury amenities. Highlights include a private cinema, a wellness centre complete with a spa, gym and treatment rooms, a swimming pool and an aquarium.

Octopus is available to charter with Camper & Nicholsons , starting from $2,200,000 per week.

Stats: 44.2 metres, Bering Yachts , 2022, 12 guests, 9 crew

Expedition capabilities : The first in Bering's line of compact explorer yachts, Heeus is small but mighty with her high-latitude ice belt and generous fuel capacity of 95,600 litres. Unsurprisingly, another highlight is her well-stocked toy box – onboard amenities include a 9.2-metre chase tender, three Jet Skis and a selection of towable and inflatable toys. A 25-square-metre tender garage is also on hand to store all nautical gadgets and accessories.

Home comforts: Heeus has a heavy focus on al fresco spaces, with a large 92-square-metre sundeck fitted with Jacuzzi, bar, dining and sun lounger area, as well as a barbecue and cinema screen. She also boasts a 40-square-metre beach club complete with a swim platform, Hammam and steam shower for resting and recharging at sea.

Heeus is available for charter with West Nautical , starting from €200,000 per week.

U Boat Navigator

Stats: 24 metres, Rena Umut Kocali , 2008, 6 guests sleeping, 11 cruising, 6 crew

Expedition capabilities: Built for a family of divers, U-Boat Navigator was designed to offer out-of-this-world experiences below the surface of the sea. Her small size belies an impressive toy box and a robust, Lloyd’s Class steel hull that can manage charters to locations further afield. During her time as a popular charter yacht, the yacht has been home to two custom-designed Triton submersibles with a depth capability of 1,000 metres as well a professional dive centre with scuba gear for six guests.

Home comforts: After a day below the surface, guests can spend some time soaking up the sunshine with al fresco meals cooked on the BBQ or head to the sauna to relax.

U Boat Navigator is available to charter with Fraser , with charters starting from €70,000 per week.

Stats: 85.3 metres, Silver Yachts , 2019, 12 guests, 20 crew

Expedition capabilities : Technically classed as a “sports activity vessel” (SAV), the SOLAS-compliant explorer Bold can carry several toys perfect for expeditions. The helipad can host an AW109S Grand helicopter while the other 400 square metres of deck space accommodates a 15-metre tender and crane. A cruising range of 5,000 nautical miles and provisions storage for up to five months means that Bold can certainly handle going off the grid – and she also has scuba diving equipment for enjoying those remote destinations to their fullest.

Home comforts: Ideal for exploring warmer climes, Bold features vast outdoor entertaining areas complete with a bar and teppanyaki grill, an outdoor cinema, an eight-person hot tub and a lounge surrounding a firepit for balmy cocktail hour(s).

Bold is available to charter with Hill Robinson with charters starting from €875,000 per week.

Stats: 77.4 metres, IHC Verschure , 1974, 22 guests, 28 crew

Expedition capabilities : Soviet icebreaker turned ultra-luxe explorer, Legend 's primed for polar expeditions with her commercial-standard helideck, state-of-the-art fire extinguishing systems and eight-tonne helifuel storage tank and bunker systems. She can also accommodate an expedition crew of 10 (helicopter pilot, doctor, expedition leaders, naturalists and so on) in addition to her roster of guests.

Home comforts: Don't be fooled by her Cold War aesthetic – Legend has all the leisure hallmarks of successful charter yacht. In particular, her 2016 refit saw the stern extended by 3.6 metres, allowing for both a new swim platform and a 16-person superyacht spa pool with a waterfall. An ultra-heated on-deck hot tub, Balinese spa, well-equipped gym and private cinema room provide ample entertainment for icy, long-term expeditions.

Legend is available to charter with Y.CO with charters starting from €595,000 per week.

Planet Nine

Stats : 73.2 metres, Admiral - The Italian Sea Group , 2018, 12 guests and 20 crew

Expedition capabilities: Planet Nine ’s meticulous owner ensured that she was built to cruise the waters of Greenland, Antarctica and everywhere in between with ease. This is realised in the specially-designed ice-classed hull, constructed with thick hull plates, strong frames and bulkheads, and careful protection for her seawater intakes, to protect from cold temperatures and deal with sea ice up to 15 centimetres thick. Planet Nine also boasts an impressive 6,000 nautical mile cruising range that allows her to cross the oceans with minimal fuel stops.

Home comforts: If you’re not exploring the great outdoors, enjoy 180 degree-views from the forward observation lounge, take a dip in the sundeck Jacuzzi, or relax in the spacious cinema. The dedicated owners' deck also comes complete with its own private lounge, terrace and study.

Planet Nine is available to charter with Burgess with charters starting from €650,000 per week.

Hanse Explorer

Stats: 47.8 metres, Fassmer , 2006, 12 guests, 18 crew

Expedition capabilities : Hanse Explorer has all the requirements of a hardy expedition yacht. Her steel hull boasts the highest level of commercial ice classification, plus she also has a cruising range of 8,000 nautical miles and six-week autonomy capabilities. Her toybox is well-equipped for expeditions with two Zodiac tenders on board, scuba diving equipment, and cold weather gear for polar expeditions.

Home comforts: Equipped for both warm and cold climes, the refurbished top deck boasts a hot tub, al fresco cocktail lounge and Bali beds for sunbathing and sleeping under the stars.

Hanse Explorer is available for charter with EYOS Expeditions , with charters starting from $220,000 per week.

Discover new species in the Galapagos

Escape the everyday in the Norwegian Fjords

The fjordscapes are so utterly remote that they require an expedition charter yacht to access the most untouched nooks. Luxury Expedition Yacht Charters with Explorer Superyachts

Here are the explorer or expedition superyachts currently available for luxury yacht charters worldwide. In addition, please see below for an interesting sample selection of currently available expedition and explorer motor yachts.

Explorer Yachts

Luxury expedition, or explorer yachts, offer superyacht owners the ultimate in self sufficient world exploration together with sophisticated and comfortable accommodations. Luxury yachts provide fantastic freedom and flexibility to move about in comfort while exploring the vast and beautiful waterways of the world. Explorer yachts are becoming ever more popular and there are many yachts for sale.

Expedition yachts, by their very nature, are inevitably powerful and rugged superyachts on the outside, so they can get the job done safely and efficiently. Nevertheless, their interiors are usually opulent, stylish and refined. Luxury expedition yachts can provide unsurpassed luxury and comfort. They come fully equipped with amenities as electronic entertainment, Spa Pool pools, an array of tenders and other sporting craft, lavish owner suits and abundant living spaces inside and out.

Self-sufficient adventure is perhaps the greatest appeal of the luxury exploration boat. When considering rising diesel gas prices expedition yachts are ideal for those seeking adventure in luxury and comfort. Built for safety, endurance and performance luxury expedition yachts are designed to give the ideal combination of comfort and adventure. What more could you want in your yacht?

Remote and ‘unexplored’ cruising destinations with bountiful natural ecologies are beckoning the adventurous amongst us who want to see first hand what may some day be lost. A tough new breed of remote exploration capable luxury yachts has emerged in recent years. These luxury expedition yachts are ideal for exactly this type of offshore adventure.

The key features and benefits of expedition or explorer yachts:

They get you where you want to go:

Whether your dream is to find the best fishing and diving in the world, meander your way through jungle rivers or encounter whales and penguins in the Arctic, luxury expedition yachts have the range, safety and reliability to comfortably explore every corner of our world. Because of their fuel efficiency, their range for world cruising is unrivaled, enabling you to explore remote exotic areas of the globe unreachable by any other means.

By their type and design explorer yachts are high volume with plenty of space. This makes them comfortable to live aboard during extend exploration cruising. Typically, both guest and crew accommodation is larger and more spacious. Essentially these yachts are designed and built (or rebuilt) with extended cruising specifically in mind, so living space and comfort is a distinct consideration. It is not unusual for an explorer yacht to have an owner’s suite, as opposed to merely a stateroom. A suite will essentially include a private area of the yacht and will not only house the master cabin, but will also commonly include an office area and even a private owner’s saloon or sitting area, and can also include a private owner’s deck. Such separation and spaciousness becomes more indispensable on longer voyages.

Explorer yachts, especially luxury ones, are comfortable because they offer more space. They are also more stable in adverse conditions. At the same time they often have the same interior luxuries and stylish décor as a traditional superyacht as well as great deck space and Spa Pool pool etc.

Extra Equipment & Toys

Larger hull volume corresponds to more space to store specialised equipment and water toys. Many expedition yachts are customised by their owners depending on the owner’s interests and hobbies. A keen fisherman will commonly install a large specialised hard sided tender to embark on side-excursion fishing voyages. These can be over 30 ft in length and be craned up onto the mother ship’s deck.

Some owners enjoy marine ecology and their yachts boast a comprehensive array of dive compressors and equipment, as well as small submersible submarines. Those who enjoy flying may install a heli pad so that they can explore the ocean and coastlines from the air.

It is not unknown for expedition yachts to have a huge array of toys and gadgets onboard for terrain exploration or sailing yachts for a spot of racing between guests. As with traditional luxury superyachts, explorer yachts will normally house all the usual water toys, from towable toys, to snorkeling gear, to jet skis.

Explorer yachts are typically built strong and are designed to be stable in large offshore seas. Deep displacement hulls mean these boats are more stable. This is the case whether they have been designed and built with exploration in mind, or whether the yacht has been converted from a commercial vessel. When the later is the case the type of commercial vessel used is often a deep sea ocean going workhorse, such a survey ship, tug or even deep sea trawlers.

An eploroer yacht is safer and more stable in ocean conditions and sometimes a explore yacht is an ice breaker with a reinforced hull. It is not unusual for an explorer yacht to have commercial grade safety equipment, fire system, as well as heli touch pad for emergencies and supplies and reinforced windows on the bridge.

Fuel efficiency

Because explorer yachts are designed to be long range cruisers, fuel efficiency has usually been taken into account. A displacement hull also means these boats are much more fuel efficient as smaller engines are required. Less horsepower equates to less fuel consumption. An expedition yacht will cruise at hull speed and often have specialised propellers, stabalisers, engines and hull shapes for optimum efficiency.

For instance, this yacht can cruise at 10 knots using just over 100 liters per hour. This yacht which is of a similar length (yet far smaller volume) by contrast can use up to 10 times the amount jetting between coastal anchorages.

Just as these yachts offer fuel efficiency, they also typically enable long range cruising. Efficiency means more miles between refueling but explorer yachts have a long range also because tend to have larger tanks. As well as giving the yacht a longer range between refueling this also means yachts can stock up on duty free fuel more easily and also cruise areas without reliable refueling ports.

On average these fuel efficient boats have between a 4,000-6,000+ nautical mile range. Hoverer, some larger yachts can sail from the Bering Straight to rounding Cape Horn in one go - 13,000 nautical miles at 11 knots without having to re-fuel.

Reduced maintenance – increased use

Robust steel hulls and often aluminum superstructures of expedition yachts can mean there is less maintenance necessary. There is a minimum of teak to varnish or fiberglass for the crew polish. This gives you more time to enjoy your adventure and the crew more time to ensure you do.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is coming quite soon and the trailer revealed that Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher is a whole new person after her breakup with Colin MacRae , but is she having a breakdown? Daisy, who’s spent the majority of her time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht working as a dependable Chief Stew, has always been in a leadership role aboard the sailing yacht. Working in a more specialized area, Daisy’s specific knowledge and ability to lead is necessary to keep the crew working well together during a traditionally difficult charter season aboard Captain Glenn Shephard’s Parsifal III.

While Daisy may be struggling during her time aboard Parsifal III during Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 , viewers will be expecting the same quality of work that they’ve always seen from the experienced Chief Stew. Daisy, who has been open about her life after her breakup with Colin, has been keeping herself moving forward after ending things with her one-time friend and ex-boyfriend. Though Colin appears to have someone new after leaving the Below Deck franchise, Daisy has kept quiet about her own relationship status , as there will likely be a lot to reveal on Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5’s Trailer Featured A Whole New Daisy

She’s still reeling after her breakup.

Although Daisy and Colin’s breakup wasn’t seen on screen, the pair ended things after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and shared that they’d split during the season’s reunion show. Colin and Daisy’s relationship seemed difficult throughout Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, but the pair’s split wasn’t the relief that either felt like it could be. Instead, both appeared raw and rough after the split and had a tough time talking about it during the Below Deck Sailing Yacht reunion.

20 Best Reality TV Shows Right Now

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

After her split from Colin, Daisy appears to be a whole new version of herself during the trailer for Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 . Though Daisy and Colin’s relationship wasn’t long, their friendship prior to taking things to the next level had been a long, genuine connection. Without Colin in her life or on the show, Daisy appears to be dealing with stress differently and understands that she doesn’t want to take the relationships in her life for granted moving forward.

Daisy’s Breakup With Colin MacRae Changed Her

She’s still not entirely over it.

Although Daisy’s life isn’t entirely changed , she seems like she’s been moved to look at things differently after her breakup with Colin. During the trailer for the new season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Daisy is shown sharing that the breakup was hard, but she’s been able to come out of it fending for herself in different ways. Making it clear that she wants to stand up for herself and block out the shade she gets from others, Daisy appears to have a whole new outlook on life that could still leave her a bit shaky at times.

Daisy & Gary King’s Friendship Could Be Fractured

She’s not happy with gary’s attitude.

While Daisy’s relationship with Colin is over, she still has d isgraced Below Deck Sailing Yacht first officer Gary King in her life, but their relationship appears to be fractured this season. Daisy and Gary’s tumultuous friendship has sparked rumors of romance over the years, but it’s clear that the pair are friends through and through, especially in the trailer. Daisy is shown shouting at Gary during the trailer , struggling through interactions with her friend as he appears to be wallowing in his cabin. Daisy and Gary’s friendship will be put to the test on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5.
