Rapscallion is a superb example of a 2018 45' Lagoon Catamaran with 3 queen cabins each with private ensuite baths including electric heads, vanity and separate showers. She boasts multiple areas for all 6 guests to sit and relax or sip a cocktail and enjoy the cool trade winds of the beautiful Virgin Islands! Furthermore, the salon has more than enough space for all guests to be comfortable for lounging or dining. The exterior aft deck also offers alfresco dining for 6 guests, top deck seating and a lounge area in front of the helm plus a forward lower deck lounge area behind trampolines. Water toys include snorkeling gear, floating mats, two stand-up paddleboards, and 2 fishing rods. Rapscallion and its award-winning crew offer nothing less than a charter of a lifetime!

Presented by DMA Yachting, the breathtaking charter yacht RAPSCALLION is a 45 ft sailing catamaran. The primary distinction of RAPSCALLION are her well-chosen interiors and culinary experience. RAPSCALLION spends the summer and winter season in British Virgin Islands. She was delivered by the renowned boatbuilder Lagoon in 2018. The ingenious yacht layout features 3 generous cabins and easily accommodates a maximum of 6 guests.

RAPSCALLION is offered primarily as a sailing catamaran. The the heart of the yacht is the main saloon, which connects to the aft deck. The aft deck is generous, with a prominent dining and seating area and that's where the guests spend most of their time. The fascinating cabins are located below the main saloon, connected by stairs (inquire about handicapped access). The cabins offer unbeatable views in the morning and are located just below deck. Multiple portholes provide a connection with the natural world outside.

Captain: Jamie Still

Captain Jamie Still is a highly experienced captain with over 15,000 miles of sea voyaging and sailing experience. Learning to sail in the sailing capital of San Francisco, Jamie developed a love for the sea with which the office job just couldn’t compete. After leaving a successful technology engineering career, Jamie set upon the high seas with his own catamaran, never looking back at the office life. Jamie has extensive experience navigating the waters of the Caribbean, US East Coast, and Bahamas. He has also sailed in Norway and Greece for charter excursions. Jamie also has a pilots’ license and is an open water scuba diver. Jamie has operated several type of sailboats and in all kinds of conditions. As a yacht captain, Jamie is known for his attention to detail, a commitment to safety, and excellent boat handling skills. He is a strong leader who puts the needs of his guests first, and he takes pride in providing a luxurious and memorable experience for everyone aboard. In his free time, Jamie enjoys sailing his own boat and exploring new places on planet Earth.

Plenty of room to sleep, with private bathrooms in each of the quarters. The kitchen was a little tight for all of us to gather, but it served us well for many meals. Lots of great space on the deck for lounging, and sunning. Easy to get on and off for snorkeling. Fun toys for activities, we used the SUP's the most. Captain Jamie was very accessible and accommodating. He was great with the kids and became a part of the family!<br /> <br /> We were very satisfied with the cruising itinerary. The highlight of our week has been you guys and your fabulous sense of humor. You have an uncanny ability to give us exactly what we want, both giving us space and being there, for laughs, for cocktails, for snacks, and constantly offering entertainment options. Steph, everyone raves about your food, and it is heavenly good. If you forced me to pick favorites, it would be the evening fish dishes, and the massive breakfasts that were perfect after an hour of wobbly dawn yoga on deck, an early morning snorkel, and plenty of coffee. BTW that coffee was always there and freshly brewed no matter what ridiculously early time I got up. I couldn’t beat Ryan out of bed, even once, although Liz managed it, but only on day one, getting up at 3:30am she was so determined not to miss a minute of vacation.<br /> <br /> Steph, I loved our land hikes to get the views, and seeing you sweat like crazy and assure me that you loved climbing hills too, while downing gatorade. Ryan, you showed us beautiful cove after beautiful cove, and stunning sunset after stunning sunset. You gave me my first taste of tubing, and it was a blast! There was no way I was flying off that thing, although you tried hard, and I swallowed half the ocean laughing. Andrew got his first taste of paddle-boarding (I have the hilarious video to prove it). It was no mill-pond, we had a big-swell week, and he wisely decided to stick to the kayak to explore the places you took us, but Liz went out most days (an experienced paddle-boarder and she could handle the chop). Thank you for towing the kayak out to the very windy tip of Magens bay, so we had the perfect easy kayak back, going with the wind, watching the turtles surface, and nosying some of the most beautiful houses on Saint Thomas. Thank you for paying attention to our safety at all times, and racing across the bay to look for us when you thought we’d gone astray (we hadn’t, a false-alarm, we were having fun kayaking the coves, seeing goats play, and were just out of sight behind the massive boat, Felix).<br /> <br /> I’m the first to fall off Felicia, but apparently not the first to accidentally dump technology overboard. Thank you for rescuing my GoPro when I dropped it in the dark, minus its floatie bubble case. Thank you for tolerating our (slightly drunken) whim to night snorkel, inspired by the underwater flashlight/GoPro incident, and wisely advising how to do it safely (noodles and buddies), and then killing the boat lights and blasting out the Jaws theme-tune as we swam back (OMG we laughed!).<br /> <br /> Thank you for tirelessly hunting lobster with William (yum, the sashimi appetizer Steph created from it was delicious!). Thank you for filling your tiny freezer with his bait, and zipping along at plenty of knots so he could fish off the back of the boat. I loved when we had both sails up, the noise of the boat whooshing through the water, and we flew across to Buck Island, where I got those gorgeous turtle photos. Thank you for cleaning up after us, constantly, and the miraculously appearing towels, just when we needed them. You keep the yacht spotless, there are so many different places to chill, the cabins are beautiful, the water is hot, the beds are comfy, and the closet space surprisingly large (who knew there were drawers under the beds, and the bathrooms have six shelves). The evidence of how much fun we had is captured in so many photos of so many memories that we will treasure, and you Captain Ryan and First Mate Stephanie, are right there, starring in tons of them. First of all, the boat itself is beautiful. For a 45 foot catamaran, it was extremely spacious and modern with plenty of room for all us to relax and enjoy the trip. Each stateroom was well appointed with its own head and separate air-conditioning control. The crew were professional yet by the end of the cruise we all had become dear friends. Stephanie is an excellent chef who worked tirelessly to feed us the most exquisite meals and keep us all hydrated with infused waters, a coffee bar, and delicious cocktails. Stephanie is also one of the best First Mates in the Caribbean. Captain Ryan is one of the best skippers I have ever sailed with and his knowledge of the local waters is extensive. Every night and again each morning, he surveyed the weather, radar, and marine chatter to find us the most beautiful locations with the calmest seas for the journey. Captain Ryan took us to see turtles, coral reefs, floating tequila taco bars, beach bars, sunset hikes, secluded beach hikes, and much more. The crew arranged for some of our guests who scuba dive to be met by a charter boat for a day of diving while the other passengers enjoyed a day on the beach. For New Years Eve, since everything was shut down due to COVID, Captain Ryan and Stephanie arranged for a local musician to be dinghied to our boat for a floating sunset concert along with other vessels. This was followed by a fantastic dinner in St. John followed by a fire juggling show on the beach all before we counted down the new year with new friends back on our boats. We so appreciated all their attention to detail and the fact they really love to do what they do. By his late adolescent years, he had sailed the Florida Keys, Bahamian Islands and had spent many months off the N.E. coast, fine tuning his passion for the sea. Though life guided him through many ventures including a prosperous run in semiconductor manufacturing and real estate investing; the “Pirate” in Ryan hailed strong!<br /> <br /> He found himself engulfed in the crystal blue waters of the Caribbean and the USVI/BVI waters in 2007. He honed his sailing skills by delivering yachts to/from the Virgin Islands to the States. He yearned to take on new waters and sailed further south to St. Lucia, St. Vincent, the Grenadines and Grenada, but Ryan has always found his home to be in these Lesser Antilles waters. His love of BVI and USVI shows as his vast knowledge and passion flow from him as you are enchantingly guided through the blissful calm waters.<br /> <br /> Holding a 100GT Master USCG Mariner’s Credential along with STCW (International Standard of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for seafarers), Auxiliary Sail endorsement, BVI Boatmaster endorsement , he is also safety trained and certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Child CPR. Ryan’s numerous land-based safety credentials have translated easily as he learned to “breathe” underwater as a PADI SCUBA certified diver.<br /> <br /> Ryan’s quick wit, plethora of bad jokes and charm have earned him a reputation second to NONE. His famous signature quote, as you’ll happily fall influence to, “Buy the ticket, take the ride!” will follow you home to your own next adventures.<br /> <br /> <br /> Stephanie comes from Memphis, Tennessee – As with all mermaids, her timeline is mysterious. As a young woman, Stephanie found herself being pulled to something-somewhere. As an only child she laid her own tracks and set her own sails. Luckily for us, Stephanie chose a path through the warm waters of the Caribbean. She set her compass early on for the slow paced, simple life of island living and found her ‘forever harbor’ in St. Thomas in 1998.<br /> <br /> Her time on island has laid many entrepreneurial avenues such as opening an upscale boutique, bar/restaurant & Good-Time Guru. Throughout her adventures, she discovered her passion for the tranquil blue waters surrounding the Virgin Islands and beyond.<br /> <br /> Starting from the bottom and moving up, Stephanie acted a muse to captains of large capacity day boats, as well as, crew for mega yachts owned by astute, nameless persons of fame and fortune. Her life on boats offered her a way to express herself in the galley and as she works to ensure you have a memorable and fantastic vacation.<br /> <br /> With her sweet southern charm, Stephanie strives to give you an experience to never be forgotten. Her passion for pleasing is apparent once board, whether she is “mermaiding” her way through the waters to show you the beautiful aquatic life or when you set at her table and she presents your specially considered meals, she shines with enthusiasm and joy. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). An emerald speck in a peacock-blue sea, Tortola, British Virgin Islands is the commercial hub of the archipelago, which lies adjacent to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Pristine bays and sandy beaches encircle the island, its hilly center cloaked in forest and fragrant scrub.

Tortola’s laid-back capital, Road Town, is the seat of the BVI’s government and one of the most popular yachting bases in the region. Away from the bustle of Road Town’s downtown area, the island is as slow-paced as the Caribbean gets.

Tortola is an outdoor playground for snorkeling, wreck diving, hiking, and simply unwinding on beautiful beaches. Even a short visit to this enchantingly beautiful place will leave you feeling revived and relaxed.

Why Visit Tortola

Geographically, the British Virgin Islands are similar to their U.S. cousins, a stone’s throw across the water, with forested peaks, world-class diving, and spectacular white sand beaches . The BVI, although technically a British Overseas Territory, even has the U.S. dollar as its currency.

Beyond this, the islands are different, which makes a visit here a chance to see a different face of the Caribbean. Tortola is much quieter than bustling St. Thomas. This beautiful Caribbean island has more of a laid-back, barefoot luxury vibe with a distinct British influence.

Tortola is compact—just 21.5 square miles—so it’s easy to explore, although you do have to take into account the mountainous center. But there’s plenty to do here, from trips to the luscious Cane Garden Bay Beach to hiking in Sage Mountain National Park. Other islands in the group, including Virgin Gorda and Jost van Dyke, are easily accessible as day trips by boat, too.

History & Culture

The original settlers of the BVI are believed to have been Arawak from South America, who lived here more than 2,000 years ago and stayed until the 15th century. Archaeological sites of Arawak settlements have been found all over Tortola. The Arawak may have been displaced by the Carib people, but there is no clear evidence of this.

Christopher Columbus sighted the islands in 1493 and named them Las Virgines. The Spanish, though, never settled the territory. The Dutch privateer Joost van Dyk, after whom one of the islands is named, established a settlement in Soper’s Hole on Tortola and farmed tobacco and cotton. The Dutch considered the islands an important staging post between their territories in North and South America. But the Dutch West India Company failed to thrive and England took control of what’s now the BVI in 1672.

Tortola and Virgin Gorda were taken over by plantation owners exploiting slave labor. Slavery was eventually abolished on August 1, 1834, an occasion that is still marked by three national holidays and two weeks of celebration in August.

Today, tourism and offshore finance are the mainstays of the economy. The culture of the islands takes influences from Africa, Europe, the wider Caribbean , and the U.S., with a lively calendar of music and festivals. English is the official language, but you’ll also hear Creole spoken, with a patois unique to the BVI.

Wildlife & Nature

Tortola is blessed with abundant wildlife, both on land and under the water. When you’re hiking amid the fragrant scrub and forest of Sage Mountain National Park, look out for iguanas, tortoises, tree frogs, bats, and geckos. Native birds to the island include the tiny, yellow-breasted bananaquit, the BVI’s national bird, as well as frigatebirds, pelicans, and jewel-like hummingbirds.

Under the water, you’ll find a kaleidoscope of color as tropical fish flit around the coral. You could see elegant angelfish, trumpetfish, lobster, crabs, octopus, and parrotfish in hues of shimmering pink and turquoise, munching on the coral. Sea turtles and sometimes reef sharks can also be spotted.

Tips for Visiting Tortola

While Tortola is compact, it’s hilly, so don’t underestimate how you will get around, especially in the tropical heat. If you rent a car, remember that driving is on the left and the roads are often pot-holed. You will need to give way to pedestrians, cows, iguanas, and other Caribbean wildlife . An easier way to explore is by taxi, for which the rates are fixed, or on an organized tour. Many taxi drivers double up as tour guides, for which there may be an extra fee.

There are no beaches in Road Town itself, so if this is your starting point, you will need to take a taxi or a tour to one of the nearby beaches. Cane Garden Bay is one of the most scenic, and the most popular. There are plenty of taxis waiting for business outside Tortola Pier Park on the waterfront.

If you’re in the market for souvenirs, local art, island spices, and bottles of rum, there are plenty of shops in Road Town. The Tortola Pier Park is one option. The Crafts Alive Village, with each stall housed in a jauntily painted West Indian-style cottage, is great for clothing, watercolors, locally made jewelry, and fresh juices.

Things to Do & Attractions in Tortola

Road Town has plenty to see and some intriguing historical buildings. The town lies at the end of a natural harbor, sloping up steeply into green hills, the landscape brilliant with mauve bougainvillea and other tropical flowers.

Many of the best things to do in Tortola are on Main Street, which runs parallel to Waterfront Drive and loosely follows the curve of the bay. Check out the sinister Prison Museum, which was built in 1774 and was still functioning as a jail in the 1990s, the prisoners housed in tiny, humid cells. Capital punishment existed in the islands until the 1970s, and prisoners were executed at this site.

You can admire typical British colonial architecture at the Old Government House, the former home of the English governor of the islands. Witness the clear Caribbean influence at the red-and-white St. George’s Episcopal Anglican Church, which dates to the 19th century.

The Sunny Caribbee Spice Shop & Art Gallery on Waterfront Drive is a great place to pick up traditional spice mixes to take home, as well as jams, coffee, hot sauces, and even Christmas tree decorations.

J. R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens

Finally, take a stroll in the J. R. O’Neal Botanic Gardens, a tropical oasis named after Joseph Reynold O’Neal, an early conservationist in the British Virgin Islands. Orchids, tropical birds, and a lily pond all contribute to this soothing setting.

Cane Garden Bay, a wide sweep of white sand backed by coconut palms and sugar cane plantations, is one of the most popular beaches on Tortola. Luckily, there’s plenty of space for everybody.

The sheltered position of the bay means this is the ideal spot for novice kayakers and paddleboarders, and you’ll find watersports equipment available to rent here. Reefs at either side are teeming with marine life.

There are plenty of beach bars for when you get thirsty, as well as a supermarket where you can stock up on provisions for a picnic lunch.

Hike Sage Mountain National Park

One of the best hikes in the Caribbean is Sage Mountain, which lies at the center of Tortola. Its peak, at 1,710 feet, is the highest point in the Virgin Islands. Unsurprisingly, the views from up here of the surrounding islands are stupendous.

The national park is criss-crossed with hiking trails where you can see endemic trees, from mahogany to white cedar, as well as old-growth rainforest. Look out for birds, bats, and reptiles as you hike.

The trail to the summit is two-and-a-half miles, so take plenty of water and wear suitable hiking shoes.

The Callwood Rum Distillery, one of the oldest rum producers in the Caribbean, is at Cane Garden Bay and can be combined with a visit to the beach. Arundel Rum has been produced here for 200 years, using recipes that have been handed down through the generations. All the sugar cane used to make the rum is grown right here, behind Cane Garden Bay, making the distillery a shining example of sustainability.

During a visit, you can admire the old buildings and the blackened still, see the sugar plantation, and visit a small museum, as well as taste and buy Caribbean rum to take home.

One of the best things to do in the British Virgin Islands is to take a boat excursion from Tortola to The Baths on the shore of Virgin Gorda.

Here, giant, tumbled granite boulders line the beach, concealing shaded caves and tranquil lagoons. The idea is that you make your way along through the rocks via a series of ladders, rope handholds, and shallow wading pools.

It’s a tremendous adventure. You will get wet, so swimwear, a mask and snorkel, and a waterproof camera are all you’ll need.

Explore Tortola in a convoy of jeeps on a thrilling guided safari. This is a great chance to drive the steep Ridge Road that winds across the island’s forested mountains, as well as quieter roads and dirt trails.

You will be led by a guide and there will be plenty of stops for photos, taking in the views, and later, swimming to cool down and wash off the trail dust.

Food & Drink

The cuisine of Tortola and the rest of the British Virgin Islands is typical of the region, with influences from Africa and Europe as well as the traditional dishes of the Caribbean.

Caribbean seafood dominates many menus, particularly conch and lobster in season, which is from July to October. Mahi Mahi, tuna, wahoo, snapper, and grouper are all great local catches to try at other times. Fish is often paired with fungi, which is not a mushroom dish but a rich carbohydrate of creamy cornmeal prepared with okra, onions, and tomatoes, dating back to the times of slavery.

You’ll find roti in most establishments, with curried meat and vegetables wrapped in a flatbread, as well as chicken and other meats spiced with jerk seasoning. Rice ‘n’ peas, the Caribbean staple of rice cooked in coconut milk with black beans, is everywhere, as are sides such as sweet potatoes and fried plantains.

A great street food snack to fuel up on is pate, a half moon of fried pastry stuffed with meat, vegetables, or salt fish. Or if you’re craving a fix of artisan coffee and decadent local baked goods like banana bread or pineapple coconut muffins, head to Island Roots on Main Street in Road Town, one of the best cafés on the island.

Lovers of rum should not miss the chance to try a Painkiller, the BVI’s signature drink. It uses Pusser’s Rum, which is bottled here. Pineapple juice, coconut cream, orange juice, and grated nutmeg blended with the rum create a deceptively innocuous but powerful Caribbean cocktail . Try it at Pusser’s Road Town Pub, a local watering hole decked out in nautical memorabilia.

If you’re traveling around the island, stop at Soper’s Hole Wharf and Marina for an al-fresco lunch at Pusser’s Landing, a popular yachtie gathering place serving coconut-crusted chicken, rotis, and wraps to accompany your Painkiller.

Best Time to Visit Tortola

The best time to visit Tortola , British Virgin Islands is between December and April, when the weather is warm and sunny and the humidity less intense.  Arrive in late March or early April and you could catch the BVI Spring Regatta, a glamorous festival of yacht racing.

The shoulder season months of May, June, October, and November are also a great time to visit, with pleasant weather but higher humidity than in the winter months.

While July and August are not the best time for beach life or diving, the first two weeks of August are a great time to be on Tortola for the joyful Emancipation Festival.
