The Ocean Race – Everything you need to know

ocean racing sailboats

The crewed around the world race with stopovers has always been one of yachting’s premier ocean races and, after several delays this latest edition is set to start on 15 January 2023.

The race organisers are also running a new event designed to showcase top-flight, fully-crewed, competitive offshore racing based around northern Europe: the Ocean Race Europe.

The Ocean Race is scheduled to run every four years, with the Ocean Race Europe also planned to take place every four years, essentially allowing competition between the teams to take place every two years in one form or another.

It’s unusual for IMOCA 60s to race with more than two crew onboard.

What boats compete in The Ocean Race?

For the first time ever IMOCA 60s will be taking part in a fully crewed round the world race this year, with several teams set to take part.

The IMOCA 60 class has long been at the forefront of ocean racing and is used for the solo non-stop round the world epic, the Vendée Globe as well as a number of other premiere short handed ocean events such as the Route du Rhum and Transat Jaques Vabre .

However, the IMOCA 60s have always been designed and built with single and double handed racing in mind, so teams competing will have had to make significant changes to their semi-foiling 60 footers to make them capable of sailing with a full crew.

The IMOCAs are sailed by a complement of five crew, including an onboard reporter (OBR) that takes no part in the sailing. Each IMOCA 60 team has to include at least one female sailor.

What is The Ocean Race Sprint Cup?

Initially the intention was for two fleets to take part in The Ocean Race proper with the second fleet consisting on the one design VO65 boats used in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race.

However, plans have since changed and while the IMOCA 60s will complete a full lap of the planet, including seven legs to finish in Genoa, Italy, the VO65s will sail just the first and last two legs in what the organisers have called The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup .

A new trophy will be awarded to the VO65 team which accumulates the best score across three legs of the race; Alicante, Spain, to Cape Verde; Aarhus, Denmark, to The Hague, the Netherlands; and The Hague to the overall finish in Genoa, Italy.

What is The Ocean Race course?

The course for The Ocean Race has a new first stopover mid-Atlantic at the Cape Verdes, before an extra long Southern Ocean leg of 12,750 miles from Cape Town, South Africa, to Itajai, Brazil. This new stage passes south of all three Great Capes and is expected to take 34 days.

After this mammoth Southern Ocean leg, the fleet then moves onto a series of much shorter legs. From Brazil they head to Newport, USA. They then cross the Atlantic to Aarhus, DEN. After that a very short hop from Aarhus to The Hague, NED fore a race from The Hague back to Genova, ITA.

Why do the Ocean Race sailboats look so different? What to know about IMOCA vessels

The Ocean Race features two fleets of high-performance racing yachts, both capable of speeds high enough to travel 600 nautical miles or more in 24 hours under the right conditions.

For the first time in the history of The Ocean Race, the teams are racing 60-foot IMOCA class vessels in pursuit of the Ocean Race Trophy, crewed by teams of four sailors and one onboard reporter.

The 65-foot VO65 Class is racing for The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup over three legs: Leg 1 from Alicante, Spain to Cabo Verde, Leg 6 from Aarhus, Denmark to The Hague in the Netherlands, and Leg 7 from The Hague to Genova, Italy.

Aboard an IMOCA: Newport Daily News reporter takes the helm of 11th Hour Racing's boat Malāma

How are IMOCA 60 boats sailed?

The IMOCA Class uses a “development design” rule which allows the designers to experiment with hull and sail shapes within set parameters. However, masts, booms and standing rigging are one-design.

Since 2015, the class rules have also allowed the use of retractable underwater foils which further boost performance by lifting the boat partially out of the water, at times allowing the boat to move faster than the recorded wind speed.

While some teams are using pre-existing vessels for the race, Newport-based 11 th Hour Racing took advantage of the development design condition to build a custom IMOCA designed specifically for a crew of four – a huge departure from rigging and control configurations geared towards solo racers, and one that allows the team to maximize performance and speed.

Their custom-built boat Malama features 22-foot retractable underwater foils, a three-ton canting keel, a 95-foot mast and has eight sails on board. So far, it has reached a top speed of 38 knots, or about 43 miles per hour.

The other four teams crewing IMOCAs are Team Malizia, GUYOT environnement-Team Europe, Biotherm Racing and Holcim PRB.

VO65s are racing over three legs for The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup

The V065 fleet is built to a strict one-design rule, meaning the boats are identical in every way and evenly matched in terms of performance capability.

These boats are single-hull carbon construction yachts, raced by mixed-sex crews with a minimum of seven sailors, and are capable of racing up to 600 miles in a single day.

VO65 teams participating in The Ocean Race VO65 Sprint Cup are competing in the VO65 class in the in-port races scheduled in each city in addition to three stages of offshore racing from point to point:  Alicante, Spain to Cabo Verde; Aarhus, Denmark to The Hague, the Netherlands; and The Hague to Genova, Italy.

The teams competing in the VO65 Sprint Cup are Mirpuri Foundation Racing Team, Ambersail 2, Team JAJO, WindWhisper Racing Team, Viva Mexico and Austrian Ocean Racing powered by Team Genova.

Genoa In-Port race starts in

11TH HOUR RACING TEAM WINS THE OCEAN RACE! FIRST US TEAM TO WIN IN 50-YEAR HISTORY

Genoa, Italy. Thursday, June 29, 2023

US offshore sailing outfit 11th Hour Racing Team has won The Ocean Race – the world’s longest and toughest team sporting event. The Newport, RI-based team is the first US-flagged entry to win The Ocean Race in its 50-year history.

In unprecedented scenes, the crew heard about their win via a satellite phone call from team CEO, Mark Towill, as they delivered their 60-foot IMOCA, Mālama, to Genoa. This followed a redress hearing by the World Sailing International Jury which awarded the team four points for the final leg following a no-fault collision just seventeen minutes into the start of the final stage of the round the world race, which forced them to return immediately to port and retire.

The four points of redress put 11th Hour Racing Team three points ahead of Team Holcim-PRB in second place, with Team Malizia in third, Biotherm in fourth place, and GUYOT environnement – Team Europe in fifth.

Quotes from the team and sponsor 11th Hour Racing

Skipper Charlie Enright (USA) – only American Skipper to lead a US team to victory in the race’s 50-year history, commented, “ We’re immensely proud of the effort our team has put in, from top to bottom. I feel like it hasn’t really sunk in yet, and I don’t think it will until we hit the dock. We’re very excited and appreciative and can’t wait to be with everyone else.

ocean racing sailboats

“ One thing we like to pride ourselves on is never getting too high, never getting too low, and just working through everything. We say if you’re not winning, you’re learning, and this whole race, we’ve just tried to improve in every single area .”

Trimmer Francesca Clapcich (ITA) becomes the first Italian to win The Ocean Race, sailing home to Genoa. “ It feels pretty surreal still – it hasn’t really sunk in yet. It’s been a lifetime dream to firstly be part of the race, and now to win the race, and so it feels very special. The first time for an American team and the first time an Italian sailor has won the race – it means a lot to me – I’m Italian, and I live in the US – it’s both of my worlds colliding together.

ocean racing sailboats

“This race is all about the people – the team that Charlie and Mark have been able to put together is just incredible, and that’s a large part of the success of this team. Everything comes from great leadership, and that is what Charlie has shown all the way around, and even in the really hard moments, he’s been able to keep the team together, and get them working harder and better to achieve our overall goal. ”

Navigator Simon Fisher is celebrating a second Ocean Race win, having taken the top spot on the podium back in the 2014-15 edition of the race. “ The circumstances of this win are a little bizarre, but the news coming in this morning was a huge relief, and it is slowly sinking in that we have won the race.

ocean racing sailboats

“ Waking up this morning – we were all preparing ourselves for the decision, and the whole redress situation really hit home for us all. I have felt from the outset that as a team, we had done everything we could have done, everything in the right way on the race course, everything by the book in terms of what happened with the collision. It was always my belief that redress is destined for situations just like that, but honestly, you never know until you know, there is always a little bit of doubt. As much as I wanted to believe that the team would get the result we deserved, it was never a sure thing until the news was in.

“ Charlie has done a great job under what can only be described as a mountain of pressure. He has kept a cool, calm head, and stayed objective, and this speaks volumes about his leadership.

“ I’ve done this race six times now, and it has consumed almost 20 years of my life. It’s nice at this stage of my career that I can be involved with a campaign that’s trying to do something more than ‘just’ be competitive and has a positive impact on the sport, the wider community, environment, people, and planet. That’s really important to me. Winning is important, and it is what we all strive for, but personally, for me, I hold a lot of value in winning the right way and doing things the right way. And so, to win The Ocean Race with 11th Hour Racing, a team like this, with such a great group of people and a positive mission, is really incredible.”

Trimmer Jack Bouttell (AUS/GBR) has back-to-back wins in The Ocean Race, having won in the 2017-18 edition. “ For me, it has been a childhood dream to do this race, this big adventure. And to have won it back-to-back is an insane and incredible feeling. The Ocean Race is an incredible project – it takes a lot from you, but it gives a lot as well. These moments are pretty unique, both to live and to experience, and that’s what attracts me back each time.

ocean racing sailboats

“ I think what clinched it for us was that we remained consistent throughout the race. We had some pretty difficult moments, and there were definitely times when it wasn’t perfect, but we got through them, and we were always learning and always improving. We kept consistency and motivation up and drove it hard all the way to the end. ”

Media Crew Member Amory Ross (USA), responsible for documenting the onboard story of the team, said, “ It was surreal to hear the news on the boat, but for those of us onboard, this is the culmination of a long project, and there have been a lot of really good people involved. The feeling amongst the group right now is one of pride.

ocean racing sailboats

“ Since the start of the campaign, back in September 2019, we have strived to go about everything we do the right way – both the sailing and race preparation, as well as our commitment to create change for ocean health. I’m incredibly proud to share  this moment with this group of people after going through so much together. ”

Co-Founder and President of title sponsor, 11th Hour Racing, Rob Macmillan said, “To be the first US-flagged team to win this storied race is an honor.

ocean racing sailboats

“I am so proud and grateful to every person on this team who made this dream a reality, showing outstanding resilience, integrity, and strength. More than ten years ago, we sat down with Mark and Charlie and created a list of ambitious goals – the first was to win The Ocean Race, and second on that list was to prove that performance and sustainability need to co-exist. So today is a win for the ocean, 11th Hour Racing, and the community of fans around the world. We all did it!”

Co-founder and CEO of 11th Hour Racing, Jeremy Pochman , said, “ Congratulations and a huge thank you to the entire 11th Hour Racing Team and to each and every person who worked relentlessly for the past four years to get to this historic result.

ocean racing sailboats

“Today’s win is more than a sporting achievement; it’s also a win for the ocean. In 2019, we set off to win The Ocean Race. Today, we won, and how we won matters. The Race organizers, the competing teams, the fans, the other sponsors – our community – all have joined us in this journey, at this 11th hour, to restore the health of our ocean. Our journey doesn’t end here – our desire and determination to do more and to expand our work continues because when the ocean wins, we all win.”

Wendy Schmidt, co-founder of 11th Hour Racing, president and co-founder of the Schmidt Family Foundation and Schmidt Ocean Institute, said, “ This victory is an extraordinary accomplishment – but it’s about more than a team winning a race.

ocean racing sailboats

“We want to engage people in the bigger task of protecting our planet, of restoring ocean health because there is no life on earth without a healthy ocean. This race around the world is a symbol of that task, and we want everyone to be on our team. I am extraordinarily proud of the entire 11th Hour Racing Team and all they have overcome. They did more than sail around the world. They carried the message of sustainability, with the singular focus of restoring ocean health. Today, the real winner of this race is the ocean.”

Twenty boats and crews have already claimed their spot on the starting line for the 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race, including past first-place finishers Pyewacket , Roy Disney’s Andrews 70, and the Kernan 68  Peligroso , now skippered by Cecil Rossi, who won his division in 2023 racing the Farr 57  Ho’okolehe . So far, the scratch sheet is showing several veteran entries, boats with well-honed professional crew and many smaller amateur teams with shorter waterlines, such as Alli Bell’s Cal 40  Restless  and Stacy Sinclair’s Kelly Peterson  Rhiannon . It’s a hallmark of Transpac that the challenges inherent to a long-distance ocean race attract such a variety of sailors, from those looking to break speed records or personal bests, to those wanting to experience that comes from successfully crossing the Pacific in company with some of the best sailors in the world.

Transpac Adopts Rating System that Incorporates Weather

At their March meeting, the Transpacific Yacht Club (TPYC) Board of Directors adopted a rating system that incorporates weather predictions at the recommendation of the club’s technical committee following their analysis of previous race data . The 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race will employ Time-on-Time Forecast Time Correction Factor (F-TCF) ratings calculated from the polar performance data from each boat’s ORR certificate and weather predictions available on the morning of each start. Weather-adjusted ratings computed for each start day maximize the chances for each division to compete fairly against the entire fleet.

Bulgarian Father and Son Row Across Arctic Ocean for Endangered Species

SOFIA (Reuters) - Stefan Ivanov, a 52-year-old banker from Bulgaria, and his son Maxim, 21, celebrated their birthdays in August rowing across the Arctic Ocean with his son to appeal for protection of endangered ocean species.

After 33 days, the boat crossed the Arctic Ocean on Sept. 8, hoping to claim the record of being the first rowing boat to have accomplished the feat.

"We wanted to be the first rowing expedition across the entire Arctic Ocean and we started from Haugesund (Norway), which is south of the southern border of the ocean," Stefan told Reuters. "I think we will be able to claim the record."

The footage from the sailing trip showed waves and heavy winds, with the little boat swinging in the ocean. Stefan spent 33 days on the boat, while Maxim, a Stanford University student, joined later after finishing his internship in New York.

"It's been a huge fight with (the) Arctic Ocean. It was not very collaborative, it was sending side winds, headwinds currents pushing us one way or the other," Stefan said.

"Almost feels like being in a washing machine for weeks."

Stefan and Maxim began building their own boat in 2019 to cross the ocean. They named it Neverest. "It is a play of words 'Never rest until you reach Everest'," Stefan said.

In 2020 Maxim at the age of 16 became the youngest rower to have crossed the Atlantic Ocean with his father.

"This is a hobby of ours, but we didn't want to just let it be an end to it itself. We wanted to have some positive repercussions on the world if we can," Stefan said, adding that they did it to promote a petition to designate new protected areas in the Southern Ocean to designate new protected areas in the Southern Ocean to conserve marine biodiversity.

"Journeys like this are reminder that even the small victories are victories and when the time gets tough every single step is a step forward no matter how small," Maxim said.

"But sometimes those steps are very limited."

Divers are racing to retrieve Mike Lynch’s personal hard drives locked in a safe on the ocean floor, according to reports.

Italian newspaper la Repubblica reported that the tech billionaire, whose clients included MI5, the NSA and the Israeli secret service, didn’t trust confidential documents on the cloud and kept two encrypted hard drives in a safe which now lies 49 metres below sea level.

Investigators from Palermo said that no personal effects of the seven victims and 15 survivors have been recovered so far and that surveillance on the sailing ship continues 24 hours a day. They say the only hard drives brought to the surface are those of the ship.

An investigation into manslaughter is set to continue after specialist divers recovered video equipment that could explain how it sank.

Italian prosecutors will continue their probe after a source told Reuters Navy divers recovered parts of the deck , computer material, video surveillance systems, hard drives and various other equipment.

The electronic devices have been sent to specialised labs outside of Sicily to check their condition and possibly recover data, the source added.

Bodies of Mike Lynch and daughter Hannah flown back to families after Bayesian superyacht sinking

The bodies of those who died after the billionaire Mike Lynch’s Bayesian superyacht sunk off the coast of Sicily have been flown back to their families by private jet.

Italian publication Giornale di Sicilia reported post-mortem examinations were completed at a Palermo hospital and the bodies have now been returned.

My colleague Tom Watling reports:

Captain gives his account of tragic sinking

Captain James Cutfield previously gave his terrifying account before invoking his right to remain silent.

According to Correire, he told prosecutors: “Seaman Griffiths came to wake me up and told me that there were 20 knots of wind.

“I looked at the instruments and indeed that was the case. I went out immediately and asked them to warn everyone because I didn’t like the situation.”

He said the Bayesian tilted 45 degrees “and remained like that for a bit and then suddenly fell to the right.

“We were catapulted into the sea”.

Seaman Matthew Griffiths, 22, said: “We somehow climbed back up to the bridge and tried to form a human chain to save those who managed to reach that gap from the accommodation deck ... they were struggling on the walls because the boat was lying in the water.

“The first in the chain was the captain who stretched down. He helped everyone, the ladies, the mother with the little girl ... But we were sinking and unfortunately some didn’t make it .”

Mr Griffiths joins fellow Brit Tim Parker-Eaton, 56, and Kiwi skipper James Cutfield, 51, on the official list of those being formally investigated for shipwreck and multiple manslaughter.

Being investigated does not equate to being charged and is a procedural step.

Professor fears more deaths by ‘medicanes’ after Bayesian tragedy

Professor Yoav Yair, Dean of the School of Sustainability at Reichman University in Israel, told the Mirror that storms dubbed ‘medicanes’ - Mediterranean hurricanes - could cause similar sinkings like the Bayesian superyacht.

He said: “It is not a matter of if this (the Bayesian disaster) will happen again, but rather it’s when and where.

“In the last couple of years we have seen medicanes - which are a new phenomena. These are hurricane-like storms that pack a lot of energy, and create flash flooding, torrential rains, lightning, hail and severe sustained winds. The 2023 “Daniel” medicane destroyed Libya and caused over 30,000 deaths there.

“The sea surface temperature has risen globally and in the Med as well, charging the atmosphere with increased fluxes of water vapor, which means a higher potential for massive storms.”

Seven key unanswered questions around the sinking of the Bayesian

With the Bayesian lying on her side 50 metres underneath the now gentle waters of the Mediterranean, mystery still surrounds how the 56-metre superyacht, sank in the typhoon off the port of Porticello.

Remotely controlled underwater vehicles and cave divers are looking to raise the yacht , which experts will examine in the coming days.
