Glacier Bay 3470 Boat Review

  • By Dean Travis Clarke
  • Updated: August 26, 2005

Glacier Bay 3470 Main

Glacier Bay 3470 Main

Several years ago, I served as navigator for a pair of 26-foot Glacier Bay catamarans crossing 1,350 miles of remote, open ocean from Hawaii to Midway Island. Leaving Hawaii, we headed down-sea in 15- to 18-foot seas. I honestly can’t think of a 26-foot monohull that I would readily agree to sail on such a trip.

Performance This new 34 runs every bit as well as Glacier Bay’s intrepid 26-footers. But the 3470 has 78 percent more roll stability than a 26-foot Glacier Bay.

Seas outside Miami’s Government Cut ran 4 feet out of the southeast – really not much of a contest. The twin Cummins MerCruiser QSB 5.9 common-rail diesels churning out a quiet 380 hp each were hardly as loud as the wind past my ears as I stood in the cockpit. Glacier Bay installs considerable sound-insulation material on the lids and bulkheads surrounding the engines, making for an exceptionally quiet ride.

The 34 series comes in both inboard and outboard versions. I found it amazing that the difference in the weight and balance ratios of the two versions is only 1 percent. Also interesting, the ratios match those of the 26-footer. Good genes, I guess. Of course, displacement-wise, the inboard tips the scale at 1,800 pounds more than the outboard version.

Don’t expect this boat to feel anything like what you’re used to in a monohull. It tends to remain flat in a hard turn or to even lean outboard slightly. Or it may roll slightly and unexpectedly even in flat water. But remember that this is a high-speed displacement hull, not a planing hull. Translating to layman’s terms: Launch the 3470 off a 4-foot wave at 30 mph and I guarantee you it will be a nonevent. You hardly need to bend your knees.

According to the Mercury SmartCraft engine gauges, idle speed of 600 rpm produced a speed of 5.8 mph, using 1 gallon of diesel per hour total. In flat water, I hit a top speed of 34 mph at 2,900 rpm – pretty respectable for any displacement hull – using 39 gph total. For cruising, 1,900 rpm burned a more conservative 16 gph providing a range of more than 350 miles.

In a drift, the 3470 settles directly abeam of the seas, with the fairly abrupt catamaran-style roll moment.

Fishing Glacier Bay engineered an excellent rigging and tackle station in the portside cockpit module. When you open the station up, tackle trays fold down automatically. You also get a 47-gallon lighted livewell with an aquarium window.

The cockpit – as you’d expect on a cat – offers tons of fishing space with removable coaming pads all around that met me at the upper thigh. About the only shortcoming from a fishing standpoint is the height of the freeboard around the cockpit. If you want to revive a stressed fish prior to releasing it, it’s a bit of a stretch to the water’s surface when leaning over the rail. However, I have an answer to this. The transom door is large enough to lie down in, and with the tunnel right there, well you can easily see that holding a fish on centerline while idling forward is easier than on a standard monohull.

Glacier Bay provides four rod holders in the gunwales. More can be mounted across the stern and in the side gunwales. One other change: I’d prefer to add removable rod holders in the wide dry-storage box in the transom so that it could double as rod storage. Hard-core anglers will probably eschew the optional swim step that would degrade backing performance. With props so far apart and a tunnel in the center, this boat backs down and spins on a fish better than most.

Design and Construction Thanks to the transom at the aft extreme rather than outboard brackets, the 3470 provides 21 more inches of cockpit length than the two outboard versions of this boat – a fact serious fisherman should particularly appreciate.

Conceived in the harsh reality of the Pacific Northwest, Glacier Bay bows needed to withstand collisions with submerged logs. Consequently, the company reinforces all its boats’ stems with Kevlar and six to 10 layers of premium E-glass 24-ounce woven roving. The Kevlar runs the full length of the stem and wraps around to the keel. A foam-filled double bottom creates a virtually impregnable, watertight compartment in the bow. Stretching aft are more foam-filled compartments separated by watertight bulkheads. The rest of the hull is solid fiberglass almost an inch thick.

You’ll find quite elegant accommodations below deck with an interesting new feature: A retractable bulkhead affords the master stateroom access to the guest stateroom – in case you want to check up on your offspring.

Despite two individual hulls obviously narrower than a single monohull, living space aboard the Glacier Bay 3470 is most comfortable, even for people of well above average size – like yours truly.

2006 Glacier Bay 3470 Ocean Runner | Oki Doki

It’s time to grab rod and hit the waves. Let us introduce you to Oki Doki , a stylish and versatile 2006 Glacier Bay 3470 Ocean Runner designed for extended cruises and serious fishing expeditions.

She features two large staterooms, on the port side featuring a comfortable double bed, and on the starboard side another double bed that packs away to create a functional work area and storage. Perfect for the yachtsman who needs an office during the day, or just needing a new functionality.

Oki Doki has the deck space of a much larger boat. Indeed, her huge cockpit and roomy helm deck dwarf most of her peers. She features a hardtop covering that greatly extends the use of the boat, on top of provides important protection from the sun and elements, while also enclosing the spacious living area.

Opening hatches in hardtop covering provide excellent ventilation at the helm, and the cockpit’s two in-deck fish boxes and transom storage locker are huge. Other internal features include a fully equipped galley, enclosed shower and private head, an enormous aft cockpit, outdoor sink, and live bait tanks.

Her makers at Glacier Bay Catamarans have spent years refining the aesthetic aspects of its boats, yet seaworthiness remains the company’s primary focus. Virtually every surface throughout the boat has been gel coated, as well as skin-coated with vinylester resin to prevent osmosis.

With low hour engines and upgraded navigation equipment, Oki Doki is ready for her new owners. She is currently located in the lovely new Pelican Waters Marina precinct with close access to Pumicestone Passage and Bribie Island.

Multihull Solutions can assist with relocation of this vessel to your port of choice, including providing various quotations for shipping or delivery crew and managing the process.

Hi All, I've been looking at power cats recently and have been looking at Glacier Bay as I think aesthetically they look good and it seems like they are also very serious and well built boats. Any of you out there that have had experience or know about the company and their boats? Would appreciate your input or thoughts about it. Thanks. Their website is www.glacierbaycats.com

They're heavier than the rest of their breed and so fuel mileage will not match the others. The ride might be better though. I think there are about five different builders so my suggestion is test as many of them as you can. My view is there are very few situations in which multihulls are not superior to monohulls. You're on the right track for sure.
Catmando, Thanks for your reply on the subject. Actually I'm considering to take on their dealership here in SE Asia that's why I've been looking into them. Cats are not very popular here in SE Asia as people usually just think they are ugly and more for commercial purposes only. I think it may be a good time for me to introduce it to the market here. Sailing cats are accepted here but power cats are still foreign to most people. If I go ahead with this then I'll probably order the Glacier Bay 2270 which is 22 feet with a cuddy cabin. It will be more for myself to zip around with and as a first boat around for show and trials. Feel free to share whatever ideas or knowledge you may have. Thanks.

Glacier Bay is certainly the best known US cat builder. Fountaine Pajot also has some interesting designs. But they don't seem to have anything under 35 feet - http://www.fountaine-pajot.com/-Highland-35,174-.html Kelly

resale on power cats Glacier Bay makes a nice boat, but you should take a look at the resale compared to mono hulls of the same length. Power cats are very expensive and take a huge hit on resale due to limited demand in the used boat market. Do not know if this applies to where you are located.
Thanks for your replies. We have dealers for Fountaine Pajot here in the region but so far most of the boats that have come in are mostly sailing cats. I think there is one power cat from Fountaine Pajot here and if I remember correctly one Lagoon power as well. Power cats are not that popular to begin with here so there's not much of a used market for them to begin with. I just think it may be a good time to start introducing it now to get a start on things. The boating industry isn't anywhere close to what it's like over in the US or Europe but I believe the growth will be very significant over the long term. Thanks for the input and keep them coming if there's anymore.
Though not nearly so well known as Glacier Bay, the Prowler cats also have something of a following in the US. Hard core fishing boats though, do not lean toward cruising like GB - http://www.renaissancecats.com/ Kelly

A friend of mine has a Glacier Bay 20-something as a tender. I've never been on any other boat between 20 to 30 ft that navigates as good as that one. It has my vote.

Kinda surprised to read this. Glacier Bay busted open the multi-hull segment for sport utility boat buyers who had more sense than dollars. Wait, I take that back. They were just as expensive as everything else. Anyhow... stable, fuel efficient, tracked well, decent quality and ergonomically somewhat correct... for a boat missing a V. Might be a case of trying to expand a line too fast, while the demand wasn't keeping up? It seems Glaciers really are melting... and the deep-V is deep seeded.

Capt J said: I've found that the catamarans do very well in moderate seas. BUT, when the weather kicks up and the waves are large enough to hit the center hull, they are a downright nightmare. When it's rough and you plow into a large wave, it hits the center hull and the catamarans feel like you hit a brick wall, come to almost an immediate stop, and you almost fall on the floor if you're not really holding on. I also was on one with inboards and after loosing 1 engine all the boat would do is go in circles and you could not go straight or any resemblance of straight on a single engine. I do not know if the outboard ones have the same issue, or being able to turn the motor/prop is enough for the boat to go straight considering the motor is so far off of centerline. Thats is to bad. I have driven by there building in Monroe, Washington and it was a good size location. Seems likes there is alot of buildings for lease (vacant) in that area. Real scary, with this economy whos next?

This is also on their website. Our goal is to eliminate field inventory especially while the banks feel compelled to contribute to make the deal. Once the support funds are used, then the discounts are gone. I guess this means when this period of giving "discounts" there will then be a time when any offers will be accepted to clear these boats

I do not know if the outboard ones have the same issue, or being able to turn the motor/prop is enough for the boat to go straight considering the motor is so far off of centerline. brian eiland said: Interesting variation on 'single engined multihull' Aspen Power Catamarans After considering many designs, the team settled on a completely new hull design and drive system that can be described as a "single diesel power proa." While identical in profile, the hulls are very different in plain view, with one hull 35 percent thininer than the other. Additionally, the design utilizes only one engine, shaft, prop and keel. The design's non-symmetrical or asymmetrical hulls are shaped to compensate for the engine torque. Since both forces are proportional to speed and thrust, the boat runs straight. We call this the SeaGlider system. Click to expand...

  1. Glacier Bay 3470 Boat Review

Glacier Bay 3470 Main. Several years ago, I served as navigator for a pair of 26-foot Glacier Bay catamarans crossing 1,350 miles of remote, open ocean from Hawaii to Midway Island. Leaving Hawaii, we headed down-sea in 15- to 18-foot seas. I honestly can't think of a 26-foot monohull that I would readily agree to sail on such a trip.
