Learn to Sail

Everyone can enjoy sailing at byc.

The club currently runs learn-to sail events for kids.

BYC is strongly supported by Yachting Victoria having accredited sailing instructors leading the junior Learn to Sail program TACKERS. BYC has its own fleet of the very popular Opti and Pacer training dinghies which are an excellent platform for both new and experienced sailors of any age to develop their skills.

Tackers Training Traditionally the club holds ‘Tackers’ programs in the second and third weeks of January.  An additional course may run between late November through to the end of December - if there is enough demand.  

TACKERS Junior Learn to Sail Program utilises the Club’s fleet of Opti's & Pacers and is held on the lake in good view of parents and siblings, under the guidance of qualified Yachting Australia instructors.

If you are between 8 - 12 years old and can swim, you would be eligible. Beginner, Intermediate plus beginner racing groups are catered for. 

AVAILABLE PROGRAMS

​BYC runs the Yachting Australia affiliated Tackers program for Primary School age children, although the Tackers 3 program can be aimed at the younger secondary school age children.

ADULTS sailing programs

START SAILING 1

This Course is designed to provide a safe and enjoyable introduction to Dinghy sailing for complete beginners.

The Course includes an introduction to fundamental boat handling skills and essential safety knowledge.

When I’m on the water I can……

• Leave and return back to the beach

• Avoid other boats

• Recognise and get out of the ‘no go zone’

• Reach around a figure of 8 and sausage courses

• Right a capsized boat

• Recover crew in a ‘man over board’ situation

• Stop the boat and get it going again

• Identify dangerous situations in and around the marina

• Sit on the side of the boat and face the sail

• Sail without kneeling

• Steer and control the mainsail at the same time

• Tack facing forward and changing my hands behind my back

• Know where to have the sails set for all points of sailing

And when I’m on shore I can……

• Dress for the conditions including the right PFD, sunscreen, hat and footwear

• Name the main parts of the boat

• Tie a ‘figure of 8’, ‘bowline’ and a ‘reef’ knot

• Respect the boats that I’m using

• Name the main ‘points’ of sailing

• Use aids to determine the wind direction and strength

• Rig and derig a boat with assistance

The course will be run subject to numbers and may be held afternoons/evenings, during daylight savings - for up to 8 sailors.

The Ballarat Yacht Club will provide qualified instructors, boats, books, safety gear.

The cost is approximately $350 inc GST per adult sailor. (subject to confirmation)

Sailability is a world wide program aimed at providing people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to experience sailing in an inexpensive, fun and safe manner.

CLUB MEETINGS

Ballaarat Yacht Club is now seeking new members as well as inviting those whose membership has lapsed to re-join the club and be part of the growth of sailing on Lake Wendouree.

The Club has a membership target of 350 senior, junior and family members. This growth will be achieved over time through our Learn to Sail programs, the annual Discover Sailing Day event, our racing season and our social membership offer. 

The Ballaarat Yacht C lub has a particular focus on attracting families to both training and competition.

SAILING MEMBER FEES Senior member $300.00 includes silver card Student member $150.00 includes silver card

Junior member $150.00

Family membership - two adults two children $400.00

Social Non-Sailing member $100.00

Crew only member $160.00 includes silver card

S ilver Card (additional) $70.00

These fees include the Australian Yachting Federation (AYF) silver card fee.  

FAMILY MEMBERHIPS

Annual Family Membership Fees: $380.00

includes one Yachting Australia (YA) registration. If both adults sail, a YA registration is required at an additional $70.00.   A "Silver Card" or YA registration number is provided when a person joins a yacht club. The registration is required for all people who are club or championship racing or social sailing in Australia. Yachting Australia insurance underwriters provide Personal Accident Insurance cover for all sailors. Please refer to YA's website for more details.

$300.00 for jetty pens.

S torage priority is based on continuous fees. The club does not provide trailer storage.

A new yacht marina and a sailing center will appear in Kazan

All-Russian forum "Yachting of Russia" was held in Kazan, where plans for the development of yacht tourism in the region were announced.

On February 12-14, Kazan hosted the second industry conference "Yachting of Russia", organized by the Sailing Federation of Tatarstan and the All-Russian Federation of Fisheries Federations. The All-Russian forum was attended by representatives of regional federations that are actively developing sailing and the yachting industry in the regions. They shared their experience in organizing international and all-Russian competitions.

As part of the conference program, a round table of representatives of regional FBS and industry partners in the development of yacht tourism was held, as well as a seminar, which was attended by members of regional and local federations, competition organizers and professional judges.

Pavel Sobolev, head of the Executive Committee of the All-Russian Sailing Federation, noted that the first forum took place a year ago, which received high marks from guests and participants. Sobolev also stressed that now it is extremely important to move forward and not stop, despite the pandemic crisis, since yacht tourism is a key economic area that "can and should be developed."             

The forum participants summed up the results of the work of the All-Russian Federation last year, discussed the implementation of the import substitution project in the industry with the support of the Russian government and the tasks of the federation for the current year, taking into account quarantine restrictions.

In addition, during the conference, Raif Vafin, head of the department for the development of elite sports of the Ministry of Sports of the Republic of Tatarstan, said that the authorities of the Republic of Tatarstan plan to build a marina for yachts on the territory of the Lokomotiv beach in Kazan over the next ten years. At the same time, the new complex will include not only a pier for mooring boats, but also a modern sailing school.
