KAPTAN KADIR Sailing

1. Luxury gulet fleet

Turkey is the homeland of a Blue Cruise, which is a concept of travelling that originated a long time ago from Turkey and now it is one of the most popular ways of travelling along the Aegean and Mediterranean seas. Since Turkey is a country where it all started, naturally, gulet choices are the largest here. Since there are over thousands of available private charter gulets it was a long process of picking only the best luxury (crewed) gulets. Our experts with years of experience narrowed down this list and listed only gulets famous for their high-end comfort, luxury amenities, and superb cuisine. We listed the top 14 picks and introduced you main vessels, but if they haven’t sparked your interest feel free to explore the rest of our luxury fleet or contact us directly if this process is too time-consuming, and we will send you 3 to 4 proposals that are best suited for you. The great thing is that all Turkish luxury gulets no matter what your choices end up being, are painstakingly beautiful and can provide the highest levels of luxury and comfort . As you embark on Turkish gulet you will quickly understand that experience on these gulets is incomparable to any other traditional type of holiday. With all that being said, gulets in Turkey have great value for money, better than in all other popular cruise destinations.

2. Best routes for Gulet cruise in Turkey

One of the most appealing and engaging ways to travel to Turkey is by going on a cruise. It is so attractive because it allows you to explore beautiful islands, towns and uncrowned shores and bays in a way that conventional tours never could.

Furthermore, due to the size of this wonderful country, it is not so simple to determine the best itinerary and pick the right activities that will make the entire group on board happy.

So if you are planning a gulet cruise to Turkey we crafted several route examples so that you can get an idea of what can be explored in 7 days.

These routes differ, some are ideal for active groups, some for those looking for getaways from large crowds, nature lovers, food gourmands, culture and history enthusiasts…

Possibilities are endless , and these itineraries are just fundamental ideas to give you insight. Each itinerary can be tailor-made and planned according to your specific wishes, desires, and preferences so nothing is set in stone yet.

3. General information about Turkey:

Gulet cruising has a long history; it all started centuries ago and soon became nothing more than pleasurable sailing along the gorgeous Turkish coast. The Turkish coast is one of the most popular areas for this type of holiday since it offers a rich legacy of archaeological ruins and historic sites , as well as preserved nature, and a clear turquoise sea. Although Turkey is near the Middle East it isn’t in a Middle Eastern country. Since Turkey is a multicultural country, located both partially in Western Asia and Southeastern Europe , it is bordered by eight countries. Turkey is also the 37th largest country and like said one of the most popular tourist destinations. With access to the beautiful sea, beaches and hot summers that come as no surprise. Another bonus is the ideal summer weather that is in most cases perfect for leisurely cruising. A great diversity of Turkish archipelago, miniature shore islands, beaches, and sleepy villages simply steal everyone’s heart in less than a day. The capital town of Turkey is Ankara with over 3 million people, but the most popular places for gulet cruises are located on the coast and include towns such as Bodrum, Gocek, Antalya, Marmaris, Fethiye that hold the best historical ruins to visit… Overall there are thousands of stunning secluded areas to be explored, only reachable by ships. These places are ideal for getaways which you would miss out on by staying on land in hotels. Our goal is that you have a unique holiday experience in gorgeous ambience and high levels of comfort.

4. How much does a luxury gulet cruise cost:

For the exact cost breakdown, it is best to contact us directly with your budget size or gulet of choice. However, the costs of the gulet cruise depend on many things firstly the season you decide to travel. At the high season you can expect higher prices and in the middle or early season lower prices. But generally, luxury gulet cruises can cost you anywhere from 14.000 up to 59.500 €/week/yacht + extras . The prices are calculated in a different way depending on gulet size, overall service, extra wishes and the season you choose. Since the number of luxury boats in Turkey is more generous, luxury gulet of similar quality will cost you a lot more in other countries where the number of boats is lower. For this reason, you can get a higher-quality gulet in Turkey for much less money than anywhere else. Your menus will be personalized and they come with very reasonable prices, where a full board menu can cost you around 175 €/person/ week and up to 350 €/person/week, while in other places it can get much pricier.  Another benefit is that port taxes in Turkey are always included in the price while in other countries you have to pay for it extra.

Generally included in the price:

  • Personal assistant, professional preparation for the cruise, route planning, during the cruise support
  • Fuel for cruising
  • Port and tourist taxes (included in Turkish waters)
  • Yacht charter, crew
  • Extra payments:
  • A.P.A: 25% of charter price/week
  • Food (according to consumption),
  • Drinks (according to consumption)

5. Main ports and marinas to visit with a gulet:

Besides your itinerary, another important piece of information to know before planning on your cruise in Turkey is which are the main ports and marinas to visit with a gulet. We carefully collected and created a list of all the main ports and marinas to consider visiting. Every marina from our list is well sheltered and has excellent equipment. No matter where your captain moor you will be provided with all the required services for easy and comfortable mooring. This is the list that also took into consideration a combination of areas that are most popular for gulet visits and some more remote areas. But it is necessary to say that all of the destinations are quite charming and well worthy of visiting.

6. Answers to the most frequently asked questions:

We have so far established that Blue Voyage in Turkey is one of the greatest and most relaxing holidays you can ever have. It is both an unforgettable experience and relaxation for body and mind in most stunning surroundings with your family or friends. However, many of you might have questions so we decided to make a FAQ page that will help you in getting all the answers to these questions. Learn more, get familiarized with this concept and start planning on your next perfect summer vacation!

7. Things you can do on a gulet cruise in Turkey:

Durin gulet cruises everything is planned and prepared so we truly don’t leave anything to a sheer chance. You might wonder why? Well, years of experience and working with various groups showed us that planning each aspect and detail of the cruise in advance is an important factor that makes the client 100% satisfied in the end. Besides choosing the gulet, and planning an itinerary, it is also important to plan activities on land and on the guilt that will suit the entire group and turn this into a memorable holiday.

So when it comes to an activities organization, we will carefully listen to your wishes and come back with reasonable personalized offers. Turkey truly offers a range of activities! Besides various land activities that we can advise you on, gulets have excellent equipment so there are many things you can do and enjoy onboard!

8. Food onboard a luxury gulet in Turkey:

It is a well-known fact that food is a very important part of any holiday experience. For this reason, maybe one of the most special points that are included in the luxury holidays in Turkey is the fact that we entirely plan and prepare your food menus from scratch!

The process is rather simple, in advance you will give out all your food preferences and requirements and our experts will further communicate your wishes with your gulet Crew and Chef.

Before your arrival, our local expert will proceed with buying the food from our well-trusted suppliers, fishermen, and butchers. All food and each ingredient are of high quality, fresh and organic with vegetables and fruits handpicked from regional markets. And this is a general idea of what happens behind the scenes of organizing exquisite menu creations.

Reviews from our Guests

The Bedia Sultan is really beautiful – the woodwork, attention to detail and the comfortable spaces. We loved it and it was always the best yacht in the ports. Mel and her team are amazing – nothing was too Koch trouble and they forethought everything we needed, great service and lovely personalities. The food was amazing – really delicious and varied, all of it was good. Hasan is a perfectionist, cool-headed but easy to work with when we wanted to change our itinerary he gave us the best advice and accommodated is so we had the best experience. The coastline is magnificent, crystal clear waters and gorgeous scenery. We fell in love with everything in Turkey and had the most wonderful week.

It was a beautiful vacation !! Mr. Hakan from the agency had everything perfectly organized! We were taken from the airport in a luxury vehicle to the harbor where the beautiful yacht lay. From here we have the unusually pleasant and nice crew spoiled. Despite some allergies and food intolerances among us in the group, the cook has managed to make us all really happy. Very, very delicious! So we spent a carefree time with water skiing, snorkeling, boating or just let your mind wander ….. just wonderful! Thank you! We can not think of anything!

A beautiful, older, but well-maintained gulet in wooden construction. The service on board. The route through beautiful nature and small picturesque villages was particularly fascinating on the island of Simi. Steward Bilal, was a unique tip.

The whole experience in general has been very rewarding. The crew of the boat is very efficient and friendly, with a special congratulation to the cook who has made us enjoy Turkish cuisine and have been aware of all our preferences. We also thank the company and the crew for the quick management they did when we needed medical attention for one of our friends. In general everything has been very much to our liking.

We liked the Göcek-Bodrum tour very much. All the bays that Captain Yüksel could take us to were wonderful. I cannot finish by telling about the excellent meals Chef Ali has made on the boat. I would like to thank the entire crew and agency manager Erkan for their interest. Hope to see you for the next vacation. VERY LIKED

The crew was awesome! Our chef made the most delicious meals from fresh food that we selected ourselves. Interacting with Mehmet, the main crew member looking after me and my husband, was hands down the best part of our trip. Mehmet ensured we always had what we needed in a discreet way and was always a step ahead of us. The captain was incredibly kind and walked us through the maps of all of the places that we would be visiting. He also made multiple suggestions for anchorage at locations that we hadn’t planned on visiting, which was brilliant. The sailor on the boat was also incredibly kind and was constantly ensuring my husband and I had what we need.

This time it was really luxury! The Gulet – Dreamland – was well equipped, the cabins generous, the bathrooms really offer space and were cleaned daily on the finest and tidy. The chef is in a class of its own, the kitchen was very varied, there were several fish in excellent quality! The Kaptan is extremely friendly and accommodating and very competent. For us, it was an unforgettable week in the beautiful Turkish coastline.

Loved the boat and the itinerary. Beautiful Gulf of Gocova! I think we would have liked more discussion about the itinerary before we started as we would have liked to go to a few more restaurants in the evening. However the places the captain chose to anchor in were gorgeous. Thought the food could be better. Although we kept telling the chef not to provide so much we kept getting far too much food!

Scenery was stunning, the boat was comfortable, food was fabulous and the 3 crew were really great.

We had a wonderful trip! The experience was very positive from the beginning: Ender from the BlueTourTurkey agency was super quick and helpful, he answered all questions immediately and organized the trip in a very short time. Crew was also very attentive and even did more than work: Kapitaen Ismail shared his private wifi with us, Ahmed spoiled us with delicious and varied food, Oshahn even gave the child his own baseball cup. We had 3 people in our family who couldn’t swim and the crew looked after us perfectly by taking us from the yacht to the beach with dinghy every day. Thank you for a great trip and wonderful vacation!

Barış captain and his friend served very well The food was delicious, the service was perfect, the boat was great, they did their best.

We enjoyed our trip very much. The boat was beautiful and clean. The crew was wonderful — very accommodating. The food was very good — of course, we are all on diets now! The travel agents and agency were very efficient and organized — I give them very high marks. Everything they promised, they did. We all feel we got very good value for our money.

ALL ABOUT BLUE CRUISE AND GULETS

turkish gulet

The Blue Tour is the most ideal and distinctive vacation you can have in Turkey.

The goal of the Blue Tour is to take in the glory and unending beauty of the sunset. It is to take advantage of the fish, appetizers, and drinks in the calm, blue-dominated waters. It involves reading a book that you haven’t been able to finish in a while and becoming lost in it. It is to spend time alone with your significant other at dusk, travel through various distinctive bays, go swimming in clear, calm seas, and lie on the sand at the beach. Get away from the bustle and fatigue of the city and embark on an inner trip to discover how long it has been since you last felt free.

Consider taking a blue cruise around the most stunning coastlines of the Aegean and Mediterranean, in coves where green and blue embrace. A beautiful yacht where you can spend time alone with your loved ones, share days and nights, and have fun is another option for this trip.

How Did The Blue Cruise Begin?

In the Gulf of Gökova, the Blue Tour’s narrative opens. The Istiklal Court sentenced historian, translator, and author Cevat Sakir Kabaagacli (a fisherman from Halicarnassus) to kalebentlik in Bodrum for a 1925 piece that appeared in the magazine “Illustrated Week.” He would serve a three-year term. However, Cevat Sakir’s cellar days change from punishment to enjoyment. It was consequently agreed that he would be returned to Istanbul. After doing his time, Cevat Sakir relocates to Bodrum. He adopts the moniker “fisherman of Halicarnassus” after the ancient Turkish city of Bodrum and signs numerous works that are still in circulation today.

Cevat Sakir described his visits to the Gulf of Gokova, various periods of his life, and the people he met in his works. He thought it fitting to refer to this multi-day journey as the “Blue Cruise,” which he took with his companions in the Gulf of Gokova and which began in very unimpressive circumstances.

Summary Of A Day

On the boat, the day starts with a hearty breakfast in the relaxing morning chill. Typically, a hard pier comes after breakfast in the moored bay at night. They make an effort to get there before midday when the sea is calm. Everyone is free to do whatever they choose in the moored bay after lunch. Swim, dive, surf, and water ski for recreation. Everyone becomes more excited as dusk draws near, and it’s time to “sink the sun” with a drink and share some of the fish you’ve caught. You close your eyes under the millions of stars at midnight and organize your wishes at each star shift.

The Blue Cruise is too unique and complex to be explained in a few sentences. Hence, please stop by and stay with us!

Yacht Charter Turkey

Turkey’s proximity to both the Mediterranean Sea and the Aegean Sea makes it one of the ideal countries for blue tour routes. Turkey is one of the top vacation spots to think about because of this. Turkey is a popular destination with travelers seeking the sun, scenic beauty, and high standards of decency. The many tourist attractions in southwestern Turkey have become popular due to frequent flights to international airports. In the summer, numerous travelers visit areas like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye, and Gocek. These locations are all included in the Blue Tour itinerary.

Turkey is one of the greatest international possibilities for your upcoming trip because of its vibrant and hospitable culture. With its tranquil, turquoise waters in the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey is the ideal spot for your next journey. The sixth-most popular tourist destination worldwide is Turkey. It has 16 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and this number is growing.

It is now clear why yacht routes are becoming more popular in the Turkish Sea. Turkey is the world’s top producer of contemporary superyachts and opulent gulets, boasting the most reputable shipyards. Various options include elegant motor yachts, elegant sailing yachts, and classic Turkish gulets.

The luxurious Blue Tour in Turkey offers a variety of tour alternatives to suit any traveler. You can explore a historic location, undiscovered bays, or an old settlement that has seen history. Your entire trip to Turkey would be an unforgettable journey, whatever you decide to do. Every time you go out, you have a brand new, pleasurable, and memorable experience.

Prepare to go on a blue tour in Turkey, where you won’t be able to discover your soul mate among the picturesque villages and distinctive ultra-luxurious decks. Turkey would wow you instead, from touring historical monuments to peacefully residing, taking part in water activities, and navigating the streets.

Blue Cruise Routes

Between Bodrum and Demre, the Aegean and Mediterranean bays make up the Blue Cruise’s middle portion of the route. Another option is to begin the tour in Istanbul and continue on to Antalya. The flavor of the Blue Trip is concealed, nevertheless, in mooring in nearby bays. Today’s “Blue Cruises” are typically made in 20- to 40-meter wooden gulet-style boats. Although it can sail because of the wind, motor power is frequently used after that.

The beginning of the Blue Journey trip is in Bodrum. Cruises to the Cyclades and the Twelve Islands are also scheduled via Kos Island, which is practically next door, despite the fact that it makes a good starting point for Blue cruises to both Gökova and Hisaronu bays.

While not particularly preferred, the northern path, known as Gulluk or Mandalya Bay, runs from Bodrum to Kusadasi. After anchoring historic cities like Didyma and Lassos, you may go on land excursions, which is helpful to individuals with a passion for archaeology.

The first place is Gökova, which is a little different but livelier thanks to its developing beaches and seaside resorts. Along with Gökova’s captivating natural beauty, there are the remains of the ancient city of Keramos, whose primary draw is Cleopatra’s Beach. According to rumors, he and his boyfriend Anthony imported sand from Egypt to this beach! This theme makes the region seem more exotic and intriguing.

Knidos, which is southwest of Gökova, was a significant city in antiquity. All tourists taking the Blue Cruise today will find it to be a great location. You can go swimming, snorkeling, and engaging in other water activities in the clear, blue waters at a number of private beaches and isolated caverns. If you enjoy fishing, you can locate a site quickly. In the evening, we’ll serve whatever we can catch and the BBQ our chef promised.

Your next stop is Datça, one of the three places in the world with the highest oxygen ratio without any industrialization. Datça is like a dream town where you may stroll about with its distinctive and clean environment, restaurants, bars, and craft shops. You can purchase mementos to take home, give to loved ones, or keep as a reminder of your unique blue cruise journey.

Beyond the Gulf of Hisaronu is Marmaris. Marmaris is home to the most prestigious hotels in addition to sailors in the Aegean. Iztuzu Beach is one of the few places on earth where you can view a sea turtle, or more specifically, a Caretta-Caretta. Small boats can be used to enjoy the river, and you can go to Dalyan to see the well-known Kaunos archaeological site. You travel through the Dalyan Canal to the sea, astounded by the splendor of the king’s tombs. Spas and pampering mud baths are further options.

Fethiye is the final stop. This town is quite large. It has one of the busiest ports in the world. It has one of the busiest ports in the area. There are numerous bays and islands in Fethiye. You would also stop at Gocek, another Gulf of Fethiye town, on your way. Gocek has a top-notch marina where you may witness the most exquisite ships in the port. The gorgeous blue lagoon and nature reserve are visible when you visit the well-known Oludeniz, which is situated south of Fethiye. Xanthos and Letoon, a Unesco World Heritage Site, are where you may also find Lycian ruins.

East of Fethiye are the small but well-known settlements of Kalkan and Kaş. The cobblestone streets, upscale stores, good restaurants, and hip pubs in these places are what really contribute to their foreign atmosphere.

The sunken city of Kekova is the next destination on your tour. The magnificent Ottoman Castle, which is situated nearby, displays the splendor of the Ottoman Empire.

Antalya is the final stop. It is one of Turkey’s biggest and most popular vacation spots. It is a city with a wonderful climate and several big hotels that welcome a lot of people all year. The Old City of Antalya, whose winding, narrow streets connect to create restaurants, bars, and stores, looks out over the port. One of the most significant sights and must-see locations in the Old City is Hadrian’s Gate, which is situated on Main Street.

Bodrum Tour Blue Cruise

Last Updated on April 28, 2024

Bodrum Tour is a gulet charter company based in Bodrum – which is one of the leading gulet destinations in Turkey. Bodrum Tour operates under a Turkish Tourism Charter License and Tursab membership with over 32 years of yachting and charter experience combined with the knowledge of the resources of Turkey.

Company owners of this blue cruise adventure have a passion for wooden yachts, Turkish hospitality and culture, fine local cuisine, and they love to plan every detail with their guests to make sure they have the best gulet experience in Bodrum, Marmaris, Gocek, and Fethiye.

Bodrum Tour offers both  Private Charters  and  Cabin Charters .

Private Charters

A private charter, one of the best options, is when you assemble a group of family and/or friends and charter an entire yacht for a cruise of a few days or a week.

Cabin Charter

A  cabin charter  is when you just  rent a cabin  on a Turkish gulet —much like a hotel room—rather than charter the entire gulet. It is a cheaper option for those who aren't traveling with a big group.

What Bodrum Tour Offers

With a flexible itinerary, guests can change their plans for the best vacation of their choice. For example, if guests discover an anchorage that they particularly love, they can choose to spend extra time there. At night, if you have more energy and want to do something more exciting, you might choose to go ashore and enjoy local Turkish cuisine and nightlife. The beauty of a private gulet is that you have the choice.

Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel offers multiple options based on preference, price range, and itinerary. When choosing the gulet or yacht that best suits your party, you have the option to choose from a range of luxury gulets, deluxe gulets, and traditional models. Each gulet's prices are based on amenities, itineraries, and season (low, high, and peak). May – October low season, June - September high,  July – August peak season for gulet and yacht charter.

Bodrum Tour Yachting and Travel does an excellent job communicating with guests and helping build the perfect plan for your gulet trip based on your preferences. For example, if you prefer to spend more time sailing, they will match you with the right yacht and itinerary for the best conditions depending on the time of year.

Additionally, their gulets are accessible to those with mobility restrictions. Aside from easily accessible cabins and decks, Bodrum Tour also has an incredibly kind and helpful staff who will assist in getting on and off of the gulet and swim ladder as needed.

Bodrum Tour helps you every step of the way to provide a perfect, memorable gulet excursion.

Landmark indicating the border between Europe and Asia in Sverdlovsk Oblast. Yekaterinburg Border Asia Europe.jpg

Most of the oblast is spread over the eastern slopes of the Middle and North Urals and the Western Siberian Plain . Only in the southwest does the oblast stretch onto the western slopes of the Ural Mountains .

The highest mountains all rise in the North Urals, Konzhakovsky Kamen at 1,569 metres (5,148   ft) and Denezhkin Kamen at 1,492 metres (4,895   ft) . The Middle Urals is mostly hilly country with no discernible peaks; the mean elevation is closer to 300 to 500 metres (980 to 1,640   ft) above sea level. [9] Principal rivers include the Tavda , the Tura , the Chusovaya , and the Ufa , the latter two being tributaries of the Kama .

Sverdlovsk Oblast borders with, clockwise from the west, Perm Krai , the Komi Republic , Khanty–Mansi Autonomous Okrug , Tyumen Oblast , Kurgan , and Chelyabinsk Oblasts , and the Republic of Bashkortostan .

The area is traversed by the northeasterly line of equal latitude and longitude.

Rich in natural resources, the oblast is especially famous for metals ( iron , copper , gold , platinum ), minerals ( asbestos , gemstones , talcum ), marble and coal . It is mostly here that the bulk of Russian industry was concentrated in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The area has continental climate patterns, with long cold winters (average temperatures reaching −15   °C (5   °F) to −25   °C (−13   °F) on the Western Siberian Plain) and short warm summers. Only in the southeast of the oblast do temperatures reach +30   °C (86   °F) in July.

Wooden sculpture dated to 11,500 years ago may have stood more than 5 m high Bol'shoi shigirskii idol.jpg

The territory of the region has been inhabited since ancient times. Numerous sites of ancient people were discovered, dating from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age. The Upper Paleolithic includes the Garinsky site on the right bank of the Sosva river near the village of Gari , the site in the Shaitansky grotto, and the site in the Bezymyanny cave (X millennium BC). [10] [11] In 1890, the 11 thousand years old (Mesolithic) Shigir idol was discovered. [12]

A settlement and a burial ground in the Kalmatsky Brod tract are located on the right bank of the Iset river and date back to the Sarmatian time (from the 3rd century BC to the 2nd century AD). They belong to the Kalmak archaeological culture. In the Kalmatsky Brod burial ground, the skeletal skulls were strongly deformed by tight bandaging in early childhood, which indicates the penetration of steppe ethnic elements to the north. [13]

Pictograms on the Neyva River AKUR 1.jpg

There are numerous pictograms on the Koptelovsky stone, on the Oblique stone, on the Two-eyed stone, Starichnaya, Serginskaya, the rock paintings of the Bronze Age on the Neyva River, Tagil River (villages Brekhovaya, Gaevaya, Komelskaya), rock carvings on Shaitan-Kamen on the right bank of the Rezh river tied to indigenous Ural population, possibly speakers of a Ugric language . [14] [15] The Gostkovskaya Pisanitsa refers to the Middle Ages. [12]

Before the first Russian colonists arrived to the region, it was populated by various Turkic and Ugrian tribes. By the 16th century, when the Middle Urals were under influence of various Tatar khanates, the strongest local state was the Vogul Pelym principality with its center in Pelym .

The Russian conquest of the Khanate of Kazan in the 1550s paved the way further east, which was now free from Tatar depredations (see Yermak Timofeyevich ). The first surviving Russian settlements in the area date back to the late 16th   – early 17th centuries ( Verkhoturye , 1598; Turinsk , 1600; Irbit , 1633; Alapayevsk , 1639). At that time, those small trading posts were governed under Siberian administration in Tobolsk . After the 1708 administrative reform, Verkhoturye, Pelym and Turinsk became a part of the new Siberian Governorate , in 1737 their territories were assigned to the Kazan Governorate .

During the 18th century, rich resources of iron and coal made Ural an industrial heartland of Russia. After getting control over Ural mines, the Demidov family put the region in the forefront of Russian industrialization. Yekaterinburg , Nevyansk and Tagil ironworks, founded in the 1700s to 1720s, soon joined the ranks of the major producers in Europe. Throughout the 18th and 19th century those newly founded factory towns enjoyed a status of special mining-metallurgical districts allowed to have a certain rate of financial and proprietary autonomy. During the 1781 reform middle Ural finally got its own regional administration in the form of the Perm Governorate .

When in 1812 the Russian government legalized gold digging for its citizens, Middle Ural became a center of gold mining. Entrepreneurs of the Perm Governorate also started the gold rush in West Siberia, soon Yekaterinburgers began to dominate the Russian market of precious metals and gemstones.

After the emancipation reform of 1861 , major Middle Uralian industries that were heavily dependent on serf labor entered decline, although it also allowed light industry to thrive. In 1878, Perm and Yekaterinburg were connected with a railroad, in 1888, railroads reached Tyumen , and ultimately, in 1897, Yekaterinburg joined the Trans-Siberian network . Emergence of railroad transportation helped to revitalize economy of Ural.

The Bolsheviks established their power in Yekaterinburg and Perm during the first days of the October Revolution of 1917. In early 1918 the dethroned Czar Nicholas II and his family were transferred under custody to Yekaterinburg. Local Bolsheviks decided autonomously to execute the royal family on July 17, 1918, to prevent its rescue of by the approaching White Army forces. Ten days later Yekaterinburg was captured by the Czechoslovak troops of Sergei Wojciechowski . For the next year the Anti-bolshevik forces took control over the region. On 19 August 1918, Provisional Government of Ural was formed in Yekaterinburg by a coalition of liberal and democratic socialist parties, it was supposed to serve as a buffer between the Komuch and Provisional Siberian governments. After the Kolchak coup d'état in Omsk in November 1918, the Government of Ural was disbanded.

In July 1919, in the course of the Yekaterinburg offense, Yekaterinburg and the surrounding areas were recaptured by the Red Army forces under command of Vasily Shorin . On the July 15th, the Perm Governorate was split by the Soviets and the east, for the first time in history, became a separate region, the Yekaterinburg Governorate. It was soon abolished and replaced by the Ural Oblast (1923-1934).

In the 1930s many industrial enterprises were established and built with the help of forced labour. [16] Local industry received another impetus during World War II, when important producing facilities were relocated here from the European part of Russia to safeguard them from the advancing Germans (for example, IMZ-Ural , Kamensk-Uralsky Metallurgical Works ). In the postwar period much of the region was off-limits to foreigners. It was over Sverdlovsk that the American U-2 spy plane pilot Gary Powers was shot down on May 1, 1960, while on a reconnaissance mission.

In 1979, there was an anthrax outbreak caused by an accident in a facility to develop biological weapons.

In 1993, Governor Eduard Rossel responded to perceived economic inequality by attempting to create a " Ural Republic ." Sverdlovsk led the "Urals Five" ( Kurgan Oblast , Orenburg Oblast , Perm Krai , Chelyabinsk Oblast and Sverdlovsk) in a call for greater regional power. They argued that the oblasts deserved as much power as the ethnic homeland republics . The Urals Republic Constitution went into effect on October 27, 1993. Then Russian President Boris Yeltsin dissolved the Urals Republic and the Sverdlovsk Parliament 10 days later (on November 9).

Legislative Assembly of Sverdlovsk Oblast Zak Sobranie SverdlOblasti.jpg

The oblast's Charter, adopted on 17 December 1994, with subsequent amendments, establishes the oblast government. The Governor is the chief executive, who appoints the Government, consisting of ministries and departments. The Chairman of the Government, commonly referred to as the Prime Minister, is appointed with the consent of the lower house of the legislature , a process similar to the appointment of the federal Prime Minister . But the Governor cannot nominate the same candidate more than twice, yet he/she can dismiss the house after three failed attempts to appoint the Premier. [ needs update ]

The Legislative Assembly is the regional parliament of Sverdlovsk Oblast. Until 2011, it was a bicameral legislature consisting of the Oblast Duma, the lower house , and the House of Representatives, the upper house . [27] Before the reform, members of the legislature served four-year terms with half of the Duma re-elected every two years. The Duma (28   members) was elected in party lists. The 21   members of the House of Representatives were elected in single-seat districts in a first-past-the-post system. The Legislative Assembly was the first bicameral legislature outside an autonomous republic, and the first regional legislature in Russia to elect members based on both party lists and single-seat districts . As of 2021, the Legislative Assembly is a unicameral legislature with a total of 50 seats, with half of the members elected by single-mandate constituencies and the other half elected in party lists for five-year terms. [28] [29]

Compliance with the Charter is enforced by the Charter Court. The existence of such regional courts in Russia, formed and functioning outside the federal judiciary, although challenged, has been upheld and persisted successfully in most constituent members of the Federation where they were established.

Until President Putin 's reforms of 2004, the Governor was elected by direct vote for terms of four years. Eduard Rossel has been the only elected governor (first elected governor for an oblast in Russia) since 1995 (appointed in 1991 and dismissed in 1993 by President Yeltsin ), re-elected in 1999 and 2003.

Since 2012, the oblast's Governor is Yevgeny Kuyvashev .

In the 1990s, the Oblast's population was distinguished by relatively high support for parties and candidates of the right and democratic persuasion. In the 1996 presidential election, Boris Yeltsin , a native of the region who lived in Sverdlovsk until the 1980s, won over 70% of the vote. In the regional elections in 2010 in the Sverdlovsk Oblast, United Russia received minimal support relative to other regions - only 39.79% of votes. [30]

Even though it could do with modernizing, the region's industries are quite diverse. 12% of Russia's iron and steel industry is still concentrated in Sverdlovsk oblast. Iron and copper are mined and processed here, the logging industry and wood-processing are important, too.

The largest companies in the region include Ural Mining and Metallurgical Company , UralVagonZavod , Enel Russia , Nizhniy Tagil Iron and Steel Works , Federal Freight . [31]

Yekaterinburg is a prominent road, rail and air hub in the Ural region. As the economic slump subsided, several European airlines started or resumed flights to the city. These include Lufthansa , British Airways , CSA , Turkish Airlines , Austrian Airlines and Finnair . Malév Hungarian Airlines used to be among those carriers but they had to drop their flights to SVX ( IATA airport code for Sverdlovsk) after a few months.
